100 Christian Prompts For Adoring God

Discover100 Christian Prompts For Adoring God. By definition, Adoration is the profound love and respect paid to someone we revere, chiefly as it pertains to a divine being. Notice that the noun adoration comes from the Latin word adorationem, which means “worship,” particularly in a religious way. When it comes to veneration, adoration and worship are synonymous. Biblically, adoration is required of any and all who profess to know the Lord God Almighty. Adoration is akin to paying homage or worship. Several versions of the New Testament do not make use of the word adoration in reference to our worship of God, but they translate the Greek word proskuneó as “worship.” Proskuneó means “to bow before or to revere”; the root word means “to kiss,” so the whole idea of proskuneó is “to kiss the ground in reverence before someone.”

When the three (3) wise men from the East arrived in Jerusalem and inquired as to the whereabouts of the newborn King, they said to Herod, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him” (Matthew 2:2). Notice here that the word translated “worship” is the word proskuneó, which clearly communicates an adoration and reverence for the Son of God. In the same light, the refrain of the Christmas hymn “O Come, All Ye Faithful” encourages and instructs us to follow the example of the 3 wise men with a threefold iteration:
O come, let us adore Him;
O come, let us adore Him;
O come, let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord!

What The Scriptures Say About Adoration

In the Old Testament of the Bible, the word that most often refers to adoration is the Hebrew word shachah, which is also translated as “worship.” In truth, such adoration is forbidden to offer to idols (Psalm 97:7; Leviticus 26:1). The Lord God Almighty is a jealous God (Exodus 20:5; Deuteronomy 4:24), as a loving husband is jealous of his bride’s affections toward other men. It’s important for us to understand that the Lord God made us for Himself and desires that all our worshipful adoration be directed to Him alone. Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, said that the Father is looking for people who will adore Him as we were designed to do.
Jesus Christ said, “true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:23–24). The word for “worship” in these verses can as well be translated as “adore.”

Although related, adoration differs from praise. Adoration, or worship, should be reserved for the Lord God Almighty alone (Luke 4:8). While praise can be a part of adoration, adoration actually goes beyond praise. Adoration, or worship, gets to the heart of who we are. To truly worship the Lord God Almighty, we must let go of our self-worship. Likewise, we must be willing to humble ourselves before the Lord God, surrender every part of our lives to His control, and deeply adore Him for Who He Truly Is, not just what He has done. Hebrews 12:28–29 reminds us of Deuteronomy 4:24: “Let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire.’” That consuming fire strips us of self-gratification, pride, and self-consciousness. True worship means to lose ourselves in the adoration of another. This leaves us with only the thought of the majesty and glory of the one we adore. When we truly adore the Lord God Almighty, our daily activities become acts of worship and pleasing to Him.

Worship, Adoration, and Praise

Revelation 5:13 says, “And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!
Ephesians 5:19-20 says, “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Behold, worship is our offering to God of our recognition that He is God. Having created Heaven and earth together with everything in them, only the Lord God Almighty deserves our greatest respect. We show this respect in worship. It’s difficult to distinguish worship from adoration. In terms of veneration, adoration and worship are synonymous. Adoration is the expression of our love for God, in thoughts, words, and actions. In the context of worship, adoration is the expression of our sincere love for the Lord God Almighty in a fitting manner of worship, in the attitudes we display during the worship service, in the method by which we raise our voices to sing as well as pray, in our devotedness to the exhortation of the sermon.

Notice that adoration may be offered in settings other than the worship service, but it should always be most prominent during the worship service. In fact, adoration is the fulfillment of the greatest commandment. In Matthew 22:37, Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. Praise is the outgrowth of faith, adoration, and worship – as well as of confession. Praise is the act of expressing our love and respect and esteem for the Lord God in the form of words and songs. Psalms 150:2 says, “Praise Him for His mighty acts; Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!” It’s important for us to give God the glory and honor that He deserves from us, His creatures. In the Old Testament, before the people crossed into the promised land, and before Moses’ death, the great leader redelivers the law to the Israelites. In delivering this Divinely Inspired Message, Moses provides the source of the greatest commandment, as well as clearly providing a picture of what the commandment should mean in practice.
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 says “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
Psalm 100:1-5 says, “Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.”
Behold, when it comes to worshipping or adoring God, it’s important for us to understand that worship is about HOW, not where or why. The HOW is to worship God for Who He Truly Is, in the perfect manner He has prescribed. John 4:23-24 says, “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

1) An Adoration Prayer for God’s Majesty (Psalm 8)

We find an adoration prayer for God’s majesty in Psalm 8 offered by David. David’s adoration prayer declares the Lord God Almighty as the Maker of heaven and earth. David subsequently compares humans to the majesty of God. David prays in Psalm 8:
O Lord, our Lord,
 how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
 Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
 to still the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
 the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
 and the son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
 and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
 you have put all things under his feet,

all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
 whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

2) An Adoration Prayer for God’s Rescue and Protection (Psalm 18)

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
 my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
 my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
 and I am saved from my enemies.

In Psalm 18:30-31, after describing God’s rescue, David clearly describes the danger he was in as he was being hunted by men:
This God—his way is perfect;
the Word of the Lord proves true;
he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
For who is God, but the Lord?
And who is a rock, except our God?

David goes on to declare in Psalm 18:46-49:
The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock,
    and exalted be the God of my salvation—
the God who gave me vengeance
    and subdued peoples under me,
who rescued me from my enemies;
    yes, you exalted me above those who rose against me;
    you delivered me from the man of violence.
For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
    and sing to your name
.”

    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord, over many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
    the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
    the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth[c]
    and strips the forests bare,
    and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
    and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
The Lord is gracious and merciful,
    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all,
    and his mercy is over all that he has made.
All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
    and all your saints shall bless you!
They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
    and tell of your power,
to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds,
    and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
    and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
[The Lord is faithful in all his words
    and kind in all his works.]
The Lord upholds all who are falling
    and raises up all who are bowed down.
The eyes of all look to you,
    and you give them their food in due season.
You open your hand;
    you satisfy the desire of every living thing.
The Lord is righteous in all his ways
    and kind in all his works.
The Lord is near to all who call on him,

    save your servant, who trusts in you—you are my God.
Be gracious to me, O Lord,
    for to you do I cry all the day.
Gladden the soul of your servant,
    for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,
    abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
    listen to my plea for grace.
In the day of my trouble I call upon you,
    for you answer me.
There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
    nor are there any works like yours.
All the nations you have made shall come
    and worship before you, O Lord,
    and shall glorify your name.
For you are great and do wondrous things;
    you alone are God.
Teach me your way, O Lord,
    that I may walk in your truth;
    unite my heart to fear your name.
I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
    and I will glorify your name forever.
For great is your steadfast love toward me;
    you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
O God, insolent men have risen up against me;
    a band of ruthless men seeks my life,
    and they do not set you before them.
But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious,
    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
Turn to me and be gracious to me;
    give your strength to your servant,

I will bless the Lord at all times;
    his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
    let the humble hear and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
    and let us exalt his name together!
I sought the Lord, and he answered me
    and delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant,
    and their faces shall never be ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
    and saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps
    around those who fear him, and delivers them.
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
    Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,
    for those who fear him have no lack!
The young lions suffer want and hunger;
    but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
Come, O children, listen to me;
    I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
What man is there who desires life
    and loves many days, that he may see good?
Keep your tongue from evil
    and your lips from speaking deceit.
Turn away from evil and do good;
    seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
    and his ears toward their cry.
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
    to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
    and delivers them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
    and saves the crushed in spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
    but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
He keeps all his bones;
    not one of them is broken.
Affliction will slay the wicked,
    and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
The Lord redeems the life of his servants;
    none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
