Overview

Before proceeding with our write-up, it is important that we pour more light on the background of Biblical dressing. The clothing that we wear today is very different from that which was worn during Biblical times. In Biblical times, both men and women wore a loose, woolen, robe-like cloak, or mantle that made-up for their outer garment. Using a belt or sash, they fastened it at the waist. A coat or tunic, a long piece of cloth, leather or haircloth with appropriate holes for head, and arms was worn under the cloak. The people of those days wore sandals on their feet. Although the difference between the clothing of men and women was small, it was quite distinctive. In addition to this, men often wore a turban to confine their hair while women of some cultures wore a veil.

Dressing in the Old Testament

1. Cross Dressing – Deuteronomy 22:5

Deuteronomy 22:5 – “Women are not to wear men’s clothing, and men are not to wear women’s clothing; the Lord your God hates such things.” As we are clearly told in the book of Deuteronomy, God prohibits dressing in clothing of the opposite sex. The Bible portrays cross-dressing as an affront to the natural distinction between the sexes as we can read from Genesis 1:27 – “So God created human beings, making them to be like Himself. He created them male and female.” This prohibition was aimed at addressing many issues within the Israelite and those surrounding them. Chances are high that it may have also been related to some deviant sexual practice, or more likely the pagan worship of false gods.

It is well known that most pagan rituals of the time involved men dressing like women, and women wearing armor. Theses are practices which were forbidden among the Hebrews. Remember that the children of God were not allowed allowed to do anything in the likeness of what was done during pagan worships. Today, In quoting Deuteronomy 22:5, some few people believe that women should not wear pants because pants were traditionally worn by male. Whatever the case, in light of the fact that pants were not worn by either sex during Biblical times, and the similarity of men’s and women’s clothing by then, this conclusion will be difficult to justify.

2. Mixed Materials – Deuteronomy 22:11

Deuteronomy 22:11 – “Do not wear cloth made by weaving wool and and linen together.” This is the clear Biblical prohibition against wearing cloths woven of wool and linen together. Although no one is sure why this will be wrong, chances are high that it was to avoid mixing things that God has created separately as we can read from Leviticus 19:19, and Deuteronomy 22:9-11. We can’t also neglect the possibility that these mixtures could have been related to some idolatrous practice that were prohibited to the Hebrews.

Dressing in the New Testament

1. Proper dress for women – 1 Timothy 2:9-10 and 1 Peter 3:2-5

1 Timothy 2:9-10 – “I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.” In the same light, let’s read from 1 Peter 3:2-5 – “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful.” These are the two passages in the New Testament that reveal the proper dressing code for women.

2. Proper head-wear for worship – 1 Corinthians 11:4-7

1 Corinthians 11:4-7 – “Any man who prays or prophesies with something on his head disgraces his head, but any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled disgraces her head–it is one and the same thing as having her head shaved. For if a woman will not veil herself, then she should cut off her hair; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or to be shaved, she should wear a veil. For a man ought not to have his head veiled, since he is the image and reflection of God; but woman is the reflection of man.” One of the questions asked by the Corinthian Christians in 1 Corinthians 7:1 had to do with proper head-wear during worship service.

Back in the first century culture, it was perceived as a mark of respect for a man to remove his turban in the presence of a superior. It is in this light that a man was requested to remove his head covering each time that he came into God’s presence for prayer and worship. On the other hand, it was the custom of pagans to cover themselves while praying. The pagans did this in order to avoid distractions. With this in mind, Apostle Paul addressed the Corinthians saying that men should remove their head coverings to avoid any associations with paganism.

Why Paul insisted that women should put on veils in God’s presence

Note that Jews women did not normally wear veils but reputable or high-class Greek and Roman women did. Back in those days, a woman’s veil was a symbol of modesty and respect for her husband. For a Corinthian woman to remove her veil in public would have been an insult directed to her husband and affront to the Greek/Roman society in which she lived. We perceive Paul strongly speaking against such rebellion within God’s church in his writing to the Corinthians. Another fact supporting the veiling of women in the presence of God is to act against some pagan priestess who often removed their veils and wore their hair disheveled when prophesying.. Remember that Christians are called to act differently from pagans and should on no occasion embrace their evil practices.

How should Christians dress for Church?

It’s challenging if not impossible or strange to apply the exact Biblical description of dressing these days. For instance, attending church in Biblical-era clothing: a cloak, tunic, turban or veil, and sandals, would cause an intense disruption in most churches. However, the general principles of Modesty and Propriety can be fully embraced or adopted as a way of pleasing God in our ways of dressing. Note here that the standard of dressing vary from church to church and also change over time. Having this in mind, you simply have to avoid any style of dress that sends a message opposing the church community’s values or doctrine. Have a look at the following points to clearly understand what we are trying to say:

1. Go for cloths that illustrate your commitment to Holiness as well as your surrendered life to Christ – Titus 2:11-13

Titus 2:11-13 – “For God has revealed His grace for the salvation of the whole human race. That grace instructs us to give up ungodly living and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this world, as we wait for the blessed Day we hope for, when the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ will appear.” Our commitment to holiness should be reflected not only by our actions but even by the cloths we wear. It is true that God sees more of the heart that the appearance but we can’t say that He neglects the appearance. Strive hard not to give the world a reason to think otherwise of what you believe in your heart. Apostle Paul understood this and addressed women in particular by calling on them to adorn themselves with purity, in a way that honors and worships God.

2. Understand that inward beauty is what matters before God – 1 Samuel 16:7

1 Samuel 16:7 – “But the Lord said to him, “pay no attention to how tall and handsome he is. I have rejected him, because I do not judge as people judge. They look at the outward appearance, but I look at the heart.” Instead of running after the world’s evaluation of charm and beauty, we should go for the true loveliness of inward character which is our genuine beauty before God. Cultivating godliness in our thoughts, words, and actions should be our priority in gaining eternal life and true beauty as revealed by the Best Bible Verses About Beauty.

3. Go for the choice of cloths that bring glory to God – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – “Don’t you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and who was given to you by God? He bought you for a price. So use your bodies for God’s glory.” The question you should be asking here is that to know whether your choice of cloths bring glory to God’s name. Remember that we belong to Christ who bought us with His own life. That’s why we should strive to glorify him in everything that we do. This includes even our manner of dressing.

4. Practice modesty and discretion in what you wear – 1 Timothy 2:8-9

1 Timothy 2:8-9 – “In every church service I want the men to pray, men who are dedicated to God and can lift up their hands in prayer without anger or argument. I also want the women to be modest and sensible about their clothes and to dress properly; not with fancy hair styles or with gold ornaments or pearls or expensive dresses.” Let’s further read from 1 Peter 5:5 – “In the same way, you younger people must submit to your elders. And all of you must put on the apron of humility, to serve one another; for the scripture says, “God resist the proud, but shows favor to the humble.”

Just as Apostle Paul points out in his letter to Timothy, modesty is pro-adornment in godly ways. All believers should adorn themselves in a discrete, seemly way. In this case, cultural discretion is a key component. Hence we must be aware of the messages and values that clothing communicate in our cultures.
