What Does The Bible Say About Loving Your Neighbor? One might ask, “what does it mean to love thy neighbor?” One of the teachers of the Law tried to test Jesus by asking Him for the greatest commandment in the Law of Moses. Jesus in just one masterful statement responded to this teacher of the Law with much wisdom and knowledge. He actually condensed the entire Law that God had given to Moses in this one statement. Let’s get this masterful statement by reading from Matthew 22:37–40 – “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

By reading the 10 Commandments that were given to Moses in Exodus 20, we realize that they are focused on these two great commands about love that are explained by the Key Teachings Of Jesus Christ. We are to love God supremely above all things and persons. Likewise, we’ve also been commanded to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. The Bible clearly points to the fact that anyone who does not love does not know God. This is because God is love. He created Heaven and Earth together with all their contents out of love. It was in His nature of love that He gave His only Son, Jesus Christ as atonement for our sins so that all who believe in Him can benefit from His special gift of Eternal Life.

We’ll be supporting our write-up with the words of Jesus from Matthew 22:37–40. Here, Jesus is speaking with full knowledge about Leviticus 19:9-13 – “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the LORD your God. You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another. And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD. You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD. You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him, You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.”

What does it mean to love your neighbor?

In simple terms, loving your neighbor would include helping, encouraging, and sharing with the poor and the alien; a refusal to be a party to gossip and slander; exhibition of absolute honesty and compassion together with justice in handling our relationships with others. In addition, we’ll need to strive for an absence of malice towards anyone and a refusal to carry grudges against anyone; refusing to take revenge. We should also take precautions not to put the life of any at risk nor bear false witnesses against anyone.

Whenever we have a difference with anyone, we should put in all our effort to make things right by directly going to the person for a settlement or an agreement. This is what James calls “royal law” (James 2:8). It is also important to understand that our Lord Jesus Christ taught that we should do to others what we will like to have them do to us (Matthew 7:12). Above all, we should spread the love and message of Christ to everyone through our thoughts, words, and actions. This is because, anyone who does not have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ is bound to die in sin and face eternal condemnation. Hence, the greatest level of love you can show to your neighbors is to encourage them to Sincerely Repent and come into the body of Christ in order to obtain salvation.

Matthew 5:16 – “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Romans 13:9-10 – “For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.”

Ephesians 4:2-3 – “With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 – “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

John 15:10-12 – “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”
