Is Abomination Worse Than Sin

Is Abomination Worse Than Sin? An Abomination, as mentioned in the Bible, is a violation of God’s law and the tenets of Christianity. If you regularly read your Bible, chances are high that you’ve come across the word “abomination.” You may have as well heard the word used in sermons. Thus, it should come as no surprise that an abomination has a negative connotation in the Christian milieu. On no occasion does the Bible speaks favorably of anything with the label of abomination. As we proceed with this piece of writing, we’ll explore the definition of abomination, what the Bible labels as an abomination, and what Christians should know about abominations.

An abomination is something that causes hate or disgust. Biblically, an abomination is something that God hates because it is offensive to Him and His character. The Hebrew words translated as “abomination” are often used in association with things like idolatry and false gods (Deuteronomy 17:2–5; 27:15; 29:17; Isaiah 66:3; Jeremiah 32:34; Ezekiel 5:9; 11:18; Hosea 9:10). In 1 Kings 11:5 (ESV), the god Molech is referred to as “the abomination of the Ammonites.” The NIV translates it as “the detestable god of the Ammonites.” The point here is that God hates the falsehood, wickedness, and impurity of these pagan gods.

Definition And Meaning Of Abomination

Abomination is defined as anything abominable; anything greatly disliked or abhorred. It points to an intense aversion or loathing as well as a vile, detestable, or shameful action, condition, and/or habit. The meaning of abomination in the Bible can be better understood as an expression of the idea that the Egyptians considered themselves as defiled when they ate with strangers (Genesis 43:32). The Jews subsequently followed the same practice, holding it unlawful to eat and/or drink with strangers/foreigners (John 18:28; Acts 10:28; 11:3). Unto the Egyptians, every shepherd was “an abomination” (Genesis 46:34). This dislike to shepherds, such as the Hebrews, arose probably from the fact that Lower and Middle Egypt had formerly been held in oppressive subjection by a tribe of nomad shepherds (the Hyksos), who had only been recently expelled. Also, the Egyptians detested the lawless habits of these wandering shepherds.

What The Scriptures Say About Abomination

Abomination is used symbolically of sin in general (Isaiah 66:3); an idol (Isaiah 44:19); the ceremonies of the apostate church of Rome (Revelation 17:4); and a detestable act (Ezekiel 22:11). Occult practices are also called an abomination in Scripture, as is child sacrifice (Deuteronomy 18:9–12; 20:18; 2 Chronicles 28:3). The Scriptures reveal other abominations in God’s sight to be ungodly sexual relationships like homosexuality and adultery (Leviticus 18:22–29; 20:13; Deuteronomy 24:4), imperfect sacrifices (Deuteronomy 17:1), cross-dressing (Deuteronomy 22:5), wickedness (Proverbs 15:9, 26), dishonest business dealings (Deuteronomy 25:13–16; Proverbs 11:1; 20:10, 23), turning deaf ear to God’s instructions (Proverbs 28:9), hypocritical offerings from the unrepentant (Proverbs 15:8; Isaiah 1:13), and partaking in injustice (Proverbs 17:15).

Most of the Biblical references to that which is abominable or detestable come in God’s Law in the book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, in prophecies declaring God’s judgment against Israel, and in Proverbs. Proverbs 6 reveals a list of seven things that God calls an abomination: “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers” (Proverbs 6:16–19). Likewise, Jesus tells the Pharisees in Luke 16:15 – “What is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.” The context of this statement is a rebuke of the Pharisees’ love of money.

More on what the Scriptures say about Abomination

Titus 1:16 tells us that false teachers may “claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.” Daniel and Jesus both predicted the abomination of desolation that would corrupt the holy place of the temple (Matthew 24:15; Daniel 9:27). Likewise related to the end times, the whore of Babylon is pictured as holding “a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries” (Revelation 17:4). She is regarded as the mother of all the abominations on Earth (Revelation 17:5) and identified as “the great city that rules over the kings of the earth” (Revelation 17:18). And it is without a single doubt that this city with all of its loathsome acts will be destroyed (Revelation 17: 16-17).

Moving from idolatry to ungodly sexual relationships to unfair scales to wickedness of various kinds, abominations separate people from God. In fact, we can say that all sin (missing the mark of God’s perfection) can be considered an abomination. Behold, all sin separates us from God and is detestable to Him (Romans 3:23; 6:23; Proverbs 15:9). God’s hatred of sin makes Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross at Calvary all the more remarkable. The Bible makes us understand that it was at the Cross that “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). By suffering and dying for our sins, Jesus Christ identified Himself with the Psalmist: “I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people” (Psalm 22:6).
