Bible Verses About Holiness

The Best Bible Verses About Holiness were revealed in order to guide us into reflecting the nature of our Heavenly Father. As followers of Christ, we’ve been called to live lives of holiness. Let’s support this by reading from 1 Peter 1:13-16 – “Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.‘” Here, Apostle Paul is quoting from Leviticus 11:44 and Leviticus 19:2. In 1 Peter 1:16 we read, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Having read the call to a life of holiness from the Scriptures, one might want to know what it means to be holy. The word translated “holiness” in the New Testament means to be “set apart.” As we can learn from the Old Testament, Holiness was generally connected with God’s perfection. This leads us to asking the question on how we can be set apart and perfect? We’ve been informed by the Scriptures that all people have sinned and fallen short of God’s Glory (Romans 3:23). In simple terms, we are all imperfect. Hence, our only option to be set apart is through the salvation offered by Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9; John 3:16; Romans 10:9). It is by Believing, embracing a Sincere Repentance, and obedience to the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ that we are set apart for Eternal Life in God’s presence.

What the Scriptures say about Holiness

What is Holiness?

The Scriptures call on all God’s children to be Holy just as their Heavenly Father is (1 Peter 1:16). And because all have sinned (Romans 3:23), we all need Christ in order to experience this holiness. By believing in Jesus Christ as our Lord and personal Savior, He cleanses us from sin and makes us holy (1 John 1:7). Theologians refer to this concept as “positional sanctification.” Apostle Peter also supports this sanctification message as thus: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). In addition to being made holy by Christ, we’ve all been called to live holy lives. 1 Peter 1:15 says, “As he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.

How can I be Holy?

The Scriptures also command us to avoid the ways we practiced before becoming Christians and live according to God’s ways. Let’s support this saying by reading from 1 Peter 1:14 – “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance.” And behold, it is only through the power of God’s Spirit that we can accomplish this Scripture which calls on us to obey our Heavenly Father’s Commands. Theologians refer to this daily practice of striving for a holy life by doing what God commands as “progressive sanctification.” As our hearts go after God’s will each day, we also increase our level in holiness as we become more like Christ in our thoughts, words, and actions. We should strive for a goal like that of Apostle Paul who says, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1).

Important facts about Holiness

Regardless of our desire, effort, and progress made in this life to become more holy, we will never be perfect. There are times that we will still sin, just as Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 7:18-19 – “For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.” It is important to understand that it is only in Heaven that all sin will be removed completely from our lives thereby making us perfect in the true likeness of Jesus Christ. This is what the theologians refer to as “Perfective Sanctification.”

However, progressive sanctification which has to do with striving on daily basis to obey God’s commands is very important as it locates us in the Positional Sanctification of Christ which leads us into heaven where there is Perfective Sanctification. These three concepts are very helpful in our daily walk with God the Father Almighty. All are of a great value in the Kingdom of God. Behold, when we are saved, we are made holy. In addition, we are called to obey God’s commands and go after His will on daily basis as we grow in holiness. Despite the fact that we can never be perfect in this life, God is willing and able to work with us in order to help us better live for Him. In Christ, we can expect to be with God after this life in His Kingdom of perfection.

The Holiness of God

What does it mean that God is Holy?  1 Samuel 2:2 and Isaiah 6:3 are two among the many Scriptural passages that are talking about God’s Holiness. Absolute perfection is another term which we can use to refer to God’s Holiness. Behold, God is unlike any other (Hosea 11:9), and His very being is completely absent of even a trace of sin (Hebrews 6:18; James 1:13). No one on Earth, in Heaven, under the Earth or in the unknown world can compare with Him because He is high above any other (Psalm 40:5). His holiness pervades His entire being and gives shape to all His attributes. His mercy is Holy Mercy, His justice is Holy Justice, His Love is Holy Love, His wrath and anger are Holy Wrath and Holy Anger. This is a difficult to understand concept just as that of understanding God in His entirety for humans.

Before presenting the Best Bible Verses On Holiness, we’ll like to pour more light on what it means to be holy. In Leviticus 11 and 19, when God commanded the children of Israel to be holy because He is holy, he was clearly and precisely calling on them to “be distinct” from the other nations by giving them specific regulations and principles that will govern their lives. Hence, as a believer in Christ Jesus, we have to be “set apart” from the world unto the Lord God Almighty. That is, we need to be living by God’s standards and not the World’s. Behold, God is not calling us to be perfect (since it is not possible due to our sinful natures) but He is calling us to be distinct from the world. Holiness results from a right relationship with God by believing in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

5 Threats to Holiness

1. Relativism

Relativism is the conviction in the non-existence of absolutes. That is, it teaches that there are no absolutes. This perspective of view legitimizes innumerable truths that are contradicting one another. Relativism is a conviction of the mind that ruins holiness because there is no supreme being or authority. Here, Satan deceives people into believing in the existence of multiple authorities. Behold, all options out of God are more likely to point towards Satan. John 14:6 says, “…I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.”

2. Tolerance

Brethren, let no one deceive you, for relativism leads to tolerance. If you do not accept multiple worldviews, you are classed as intolerant, and such leads to the intolerance of intolerance. On the other hand, if you tolerate multiple worldviews and authorities, holiness is diluted as God’s glory is shared. Isaiah 48:11 says, “My glory I will not give to another.

3. Contextualization

We realize upon reading the Scriptures that in God’s quest for Holiness, He selected the children of Israel as a light to the nations. God gave Israel a charge to be separate from other nations. This was a way of boosting the other nations to look at Israel and find God attractive. Unfortunately, Israel failed on several occasions. However, God did not abandon them but came to their rescue and that of the whole world through His Son, Jesus Christ. Today, the Church of Christ is being called to reflect the loving and holy nature of God as a light to nations. Contextualization is when God’s holy people relate to their context. 1 Corinthians 9:22 says, “…I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.” It is unfortunate that many false teachers use this text to abuse contextualization, giving licence to liberty.

4. Liberty

Liberty, otherwise known as antinomianism (against law), holds the teaching that God’s Law is entirely abolished by Grace. It teaches that humanity is no longer expected to cherish, teach, and keep God’s law. This gives license to those living in darkness to continue dwelling under the canopy of the Devil’s ways and teachings (Jude 4). This false teaching is a clear abuse of grace.  Romans 7:12 says, “So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.” It is not because we are unable to keep God’s law that we should completely abandon or forget it. We should rather pray the more for strength in keeping the law. Jesus Christ Himself speaks about this in Matthew 5:17 – “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. “

5. Legalism

Note here that the flip side of liberty is legalism. Legalism comes in two parts. It is not attempting to keep the Law of God. It is fully assuming that we can keep it. Furthermore, it says that God’s acceptance is found in keeping God’s law. If that was the case, God’s grace through the death of Christ, His resurrection, and all its implications are nullified. Galatians 2:19-21 says, “So far as the Law is concerned, however, I am dead – killed by the Law itself – in order that I might live for God. I have been put to death with Christ on His Cross, so that it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. I refuse to reject the grace of God. But if a person is put right with God through the Law, it means that Christ died for nothing.

The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.”
