Faith And Action Bible Verse

Discover the Faith And Action Bible Verse. Behold, our actions speak. In fact, our actions speak louder than our words. Thus, our works are words. The question is what are they saying? Are our actions in line with what we believe and speak with our mouths? The old adage, “actions speak louder than words,” is true because, as another adage says, “words are cheap.” Therefore, when it comes to our faith if our words and actions are saying different things we must look to our actions for the truth. This is what Apostle James encourages us to do in James 2:18, and equally what the Apostle John essentially tells us in 1 John 3:18. Likewise, Jesus Christ says this in John 10, where once again Jesus Christ had proclaimed Himself to be God (John 10:27–30), and once again the Jews picked up stones (John 10:31).

In John 10:32, Jesus asked the Jews a revealing question: “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” They said they didn’t want to stone Him for His works but for His words (John 10:33). So, Jesus replied saying, “If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me [i.e. my words]; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, …” (John 10:37–38). Jesus was saying that His works are also words. Jesus had said this earlier in the conversation: “[The] Jews gathered around him and said to him, ‘How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.’ Jesus answered them, ‘I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me.’” (John 10:24–25).

Faith And Action Bible Verse

Behold, the Bible says a lot about actions. Jesus Christ, the God-Man, lived His earthly life in perfect integrity. His words and works were always saying the same thing. He was the incarnate Word of God (John 1:1, 14) who always did what was pleasing to the Father (John 8:29). Being “the founder and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2), Jesus Christ showed us how faith works. His trust in the Father was constantly being proclaimed through the things He did. His thoughts, words, and actions were in line with His Father’s Sovereign Will. Faith, by its very nature, produces action. Behold, it’s intrinsic. Each of us is wired to feel and act in accordance with what we believe to be true. We cannot help it. This is a universal human phenomenon.

Every human being lives by faith. The atheist who says he doesn’t go for that faith nonsense probably because he believes in science has a category of confusion. What such a person really means is that he/she puts his/her faith in hypotheses advanced by non-religious scientists with regard to the origin of the universe and questions of ultimate meaning. Since these are things he/she cannot scientifically verify, and which he/she largely learned from others who he/she considers authoritative, he/she too has a “conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). None of us can help working out his/her faith. We cannot help doing what we believe. It is for this reason that Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Likewise, Apostle Paul defined his mission as bringing about “the obedience of faith” among the Gentiles (Romans 1:5).

What Are Your Actions Saying?

Brethren, if we want to know what we really believe, we must look at our actions. For sinful humans whose selfish pride so frequently grabs for control of our tongue, the words of our mouth can be unreliable. But the words of our works speak with a powerful, and sometimes painful, eloquence about what we believe. What are your actions saying about you? What do you do when you are alone? How do you react when you are disappointed or challenged? Also, how willing are you to serve obscurely? These are exposing and convicting questions. Behold, Jesus Christ had perfect consistency between His words and actions. None of the rest of us has this yet. However, as Christians, it’s our duty to follow in the footsteps of Christ our Savior. Our works reveal where our faith is. Jesus told us that a “tree is known by its fruit” (Matthew 12:33).

Do Actions Really Speak Louder Than Words?

The phrase “actions speak louder than words” has a rich and lengthy history. As a matter of fact, it has become a modern-day proverb. However, those exact words are not found in the Bible, so, is the proverb true? Do actions really speak louder than words? The answer is both yes and no. To reveal the view from both sides we will look at the history of the proverb, what the Bible has to say about actions and words, and what really matters to God. The origin of the proverb “actions speak louder than words” dates all the way back to the 1550s. It began with different wording and has changed throughout time. This phrase was first recorded by a French writer named Michel de Montaigne. His exact words were “Saying is one thing and doing is another.

Over a century later (1628), an Englishman named J. Pym wrote a variation of the proverb: “A word spoken in season is like an Apple of Gold set in Pictures of Silver, and actions are more precious than words. Another century passed before A.M. Davis penned another variation in 1736. He wrote in a letter titled “Melancholy State of Province” in Colonial Currency: “Actions speak louder than words and are more to be regarded.” Mark Twain (1835 – 1910) penned down his own version as well. He puts it like this: “Action speaks louder than words but not nearly as often.” Behold, all these forms of the proverb illustrate a stark difference between words and actions, giving weight to actions.

What The Bible Says About “Actions Speak Louder Than Words”

The Bible says much about actions and words. In Matthew 21, Jesus Christ uses a story to illustrate how actions speak louder than words. Jesus’ story is about two sons whose father told them to go and work in his vineyard. One said no, he would not go. The other said yes. However, the one who said no changed his mind and went to work, and the one who had said yes, did not go. Jesus Christ ends the story with a revealing question, “Which of the two did the will of his father?” Truthfully speaking, the son who said yes but did not follow through failed to love and honor his father. Apostle John puts it this way: “My little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth” (1 John 3:18).

In the same light, Titus delivers a stern word about actions that contradict what is said: “They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him” (Titus 1:16). This is referred to as hypocrisy (behavior that contradicts what a person claims to believe). Hypocrisy has a spell that repels. “Your actions speak so loudly, I cannot hear what you are saying” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). Apostle James addresses this “words and actions thing” by connecting it to faith because it takes faith to obey God, “For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without actions is also dead” (James 2:26). A look at these Scriptures makes us understand how our actions sometimes betray us.

What Matters Most To God?

Brethren, going through what we’ve written so far may sound as if actions are the end-all, but that isn’t true. Consider the words of Jesus Christ regarding a certain widow’s actions and others who had the same “action.” Mark 12:41-44 says, Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything — all she had to live on”

In this case, we see that both gave offerings but instead of the action being the focus, Jesus saw into the widow’s heart in confirmation with the Scripture that says, “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). Brethren, let the love of God and that of our neighbors lead in everything that we do. Apostle Paul says in Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” In the same light, 1 John3:17-18 says, “If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion — how can God’s love be in that person? Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”
