Bible Verses About Gentleness

As followers of Jesus Christ, it is very important for us to master the Bible Verses About Gentleness. We are told in the Scriptures that the Holy Spirit works in us to be more like Christ, our Master and Savior (Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 4:14-16). And behold, part of the fruit, or results, of the work of the Holy Spirit in us is gentleness. Apostle Paul clearly understood this and that’s why he included gentleness in the character of a true christian as we can read from Titus 3:2 – “Tell them not to speak evil of anyone, but to be peaceful and friendly, and always to show a GENTLE attitude towards everyone.” It is important to understand that gentleness which is also translated as “meekness” is not a sign of weakness.

That is, being gentle does not mean being weak. Rather, gentleness has to do with being humble and thankful to God, being polite and showing a restrained behavior towards others. Note here that the opposite of gentleness is a desire for revenge, anger, and self -aggrandizement. Truth be told, it takes a strong person to be truly gentle. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his poem entitled “The Village Blacksmith” gives us a wonderful demonstration of genuine gentleness. In his poem, he describes the main character as follows: “The smith, a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands; And the muscles of his brawny arms Are strong as iron bands.” However, in Church, the Smith hears his daughter singing a hymn, he is overtaken by emotion, “And with his hard, rough hand he wipes / A tear out of his eyes.”This is genuine gentleness which is full of humility.

What the Scriptures say about Gentleness

According to the Scriptures, gentleness is a wonderful fruit of the Holy Spirit. Anyone who is serious about pleasing God must cultivate a gentle spirit. It is a character which directly links us to Jesus Christ, for didn’t He speak of the meek inheriting the kingdom of God? In Apostle John’s Revelation about the end times, he looks for a lion but finds a lamb. Just like the other spiritual fruits that are being fueled by the Holy Spirit, gentleness is an aspect of God’s character that all His children must adopt and reflect. Also note here that being gentle has nothing to do with being unassertive, indecisive, wishy-washy, and/or just plain wimpy. Rather, being gentle is about self-control, the refusal of using power to harm anyone, the refusal of embracing vengeance, and an unwillingness to cut and slash at others.

Genuine gentleness as required by God demands that no harm be done. There are safe ways to demonstrate our boldness for what is right without necessarily using violence. There are also non-manipulative ways to lead and convince others to go after what is right. However, it is not in the human nature to be gentle. That is to say that we are simply not gentle creatures in nature; certainly not males, despite the term ‘gentleman’. Men are quick with the fists, the knives, and the guns. On the other hand, women have historically been more gentle, although this is on a relative scale because they also have their own ways of being destructive and vicious. Today’s hostility is rapidly increasing. It even shows up as a trait for the well-being of our families. And overcoming it with gentleness is only possible through the help of the Holy Spirit.

Gentleness springs from love

True gentleness is more than a mere personal disposition. It springs from love. That is, gentleness outgrows from love. In other words, it is a product of love. It is when you willingly choose not to be harsh, angry, rash, or rough towards others. Gentleness is manifested when you learn and make use of the best way to hold an egg or butterfly when dealing with others. A gentle person actually knows better than hurting others, and so he/she chooses to act in a way that does not. He/she is not out to make others angry or sad. Although gentleness may lose battles, it helps to win the overall struggles. It is without doubt that a gentle response turns to create more friends and fewer enemies. Gentleness is the manifestation of a higher level of self-control. Self-control helps in overcoming impulsive reactions which are usually far from being gentle.

Important facts to know about gentleness

Each and every human is powerful. We have the power to speak words that influence others. In addition, we also have to power to act in ways that hurt or help those around us. We can as well choose what influences will inform our words and actions. This very power that we are talking about is constrained and channeled by gentleness. Truly being gentle has to do with recognizing that God’s thoughts and ways are absolutely above ours (Isaiah 55:9). Maintaining a gentle attitude towards God and our neighbors opens new doors for the release of heavenly blessings. Gentleness also means giving up the right to judge what is good for ourselves and others as we rely on God’s judgement and guidance for truth. Christ Himself was gentle as we can read from Matthew 21:5 – “See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey.”

Being filled with the Spirit’s fruit of gentleness, we turn to correct others with easiness instead of arguing in resentment and anger. We do this knowing that their salvation is far more important than our pride or desire to be praised for being right in all things (2 Timothy 2:24-25). When the fruit of gentleness is at work in our lives, we readily forgive knowing well-fully that the offence made against us is nothing compared to that which God has already forgiven us through Christ (Matthew 18:23-35). Hence, sectarianism and competition are overtake or vanquished, as the goal becomes less about ourselves and more about preaching the Holy Gospel. That is, the Gospel of a Sincere Repentance and obedience to the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ. Living in a spirit of gentleness towards God also has to do with accepting His judgement on people and issues.

5 Things that the Bible says about Gentleness

1. God wants us to teach and correct with gentleness (2 Timothy 2:24; 1 Peter 3:15)

2 Timothy 2:24 – “God’s people must not be quarrelsome; they must be gentle, patient teachers of those who are wrong.” 1 Peter 3:15 – “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” These scriptures invite us to be gentle in correcting and teaching the Laws of God Almighty. This will reflect His nature of love in us thereby convincing an making others comfortable about hearing the things of His Kingdom.

2. Gentleness makes you willing to listen to others (James 3:17)

James 3:17 – “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure and full of quiet gentleness. Then it is peace-loving and courteous. It allows discussion and is willing to yield to others.” It is very important to understand that we do not know everything. There are times that our mind falters. This is simply because our minds our imperfect. Hence, with gentleness of spirit, we should learn to leave room for error and discussion.

3. Gentleness is a mark of true Christianity (Colossians 3:12)

Colossians 3:12 – “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” With an understanding of this scripture, Mark Twain once said, “Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” Up to some extent, we can say that kindness is gentleness. True kindness speaks and demonstrates clearer than our words will ever do. Just one unkind act can discredit your reputation in an instant. This is because kindness is love as we can read from 1 Corinthians 13:4 –Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

4. Gentleness is the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22)

Galatians 5:22 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, gentleness (kindness)…” It is by allowing the Holy Spirit to have His way in our lives that we are able to exhibit gentleness. In the absence of the Holy Spirit, we are more likely to be harsh and very far from being gentle.

5. Gentleness is a response to Christ’s mercy and forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32)

Ephesians 4:32 – “Be gentle (kind) and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Just as we have experienced God’s forgiveness, it should be with joy that we extend or afford the same blessing to others.

As children of God, we’ve been called to live gentle lives that are pleasing to our Father. May our resolve on the topic of gentleness be what Max Lucado declared: “I choose gentleness… Nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle. If I raise my voice may it be only in praise. If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer, If I make a demand, may it be only of myself.”
