What Does the Bible Say About the Importance of Love? Romans 12:10 says, βBe kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;β Likewise, 1 John 4:8 says, βHe who does not love does not know God, for God is love.β As a matter of fact, the Bible has a great deal to say about love. The Bible explicitly tells us that βLove is of Godβ and βGod is Loveβ (1 John 4:7β8). In other words, love is a fundamental characteristic of who God is. Behold, everything that the Lord God does is impelled and influenced by His love. Note that the Bible makes use of several different words for βloveβ in Hebrew and Greek, interchanging them with respect to context. Some of these words mean βaffectionate loveβ; others mean βfriendshipβ; and still others βerotic, sexual love.β
Brethren, there is also a distinct word for the type of love that God displays. In the Greek Language, this word is agape, and it refers to a benevolent and charitable love that seeks the best for the loved one. We find many examples of love in the Bible such as the caring provision of Boaz for Ruth, the strong friendship of David and Jonathan, the poetic and passionate love of Solomon and the Shulamite, the enduring commitment of Hosea to Gomer, the fatherly love of Paul for Timothy, the affectionate love of John for the church, and, of course, the sacrificial, saving love of Jesus Christ for the elect.
Ephesians 1:4-5 says, βEven as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,β
What Does the Bible Say About the Importance of Love?
John 13:34-35 says, βA new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.β
Agape, the benevolent, selfless love that the Lord God Almighty shows, is mentioned on several occasions in the New Testament. In 1 Corinthians 13, loveβs characteristics are listed: love is patient and kind; love is not easily angered, doesnβt delight in evil, and doesnβt keep a record of wrongs; love is not proud nor self-seeking; love doesnβt envy, boast, or dishonor others, rather, love rejoices with the truth; love always protects, hopes, trusts, and perseveres; love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:4β8). Notice that of the greatest of Godβs gifts, faith, hope, and love, βthe greatest . . . is loveβ (1 Corinthians 13:13).
The Bible tells us that God was motivated by love to save the world. John 3:16 says, βFor God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.β Godβs love is best observed in the sacrifice of Christ on our behalf (1 John 4:9).
Amazingly, Godβs love does not require us to be βworthyβ to receive it; His love is truly benevolent and gracious: βBut God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.β (Romans 5:8). The Bible tells us that since true love is part of Godβs nature, God is the source of love. In fact, He is the initiator of a loving relationship with us. And as such, any love we have for God is simply a response to His sacrificial love for us (1 John 4:10).
More Biblical Facts About Love
Brethren, our human understanding of love is unreliable as it is flawed, weak, and incomplete, but the more we look at Jesus, the better we understand true love. Scripture teaches that Godβs love for us in Christ has resulted in our being brought into His family: βSee what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!β (1 John 3:1). In the same way that the father in the parable showed love to his prodigal son (Luke 15:11β32), so our Heavenly Father receives us with joy when we come to Him in faith. Behold, He makes us βaccepted in the Belovedβ (Ephesians 1:6, NKJV).
The Bible teaches us that we are to love others the way that God loves us. We are to love the family of God (1 Peter 2:17). Likewise, we are to love our enemies. Loving our enemies has to do with actively seeking what is best for them (Matthew 5:44). Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loves the church (Ephesians 5:25). As we show benevolent, selfless love, we reflect Godβs love to a lost and dying world. βWe love because he first loved usβ (1 John 4:19).
The Bible says that our love for God is reflected by our obedience to Him: βFor this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not burdensomeβ (1 John 5:3; cf. John 14:15). Behold, we serve God out of love for Him. And Godβs great love for us enables us to obey Him freely, without the fear of punishment or the burden of guilt.
Love Drives Out Fear
1 John 4:18 says, βThere is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in loveβ (this is again the word agape). Behold, the dismissal of the fear of condemnation is one of the main functions of Godβs love. The person without Christ is under judgment and has plenty to fear, but once a person is in Christ, the fear of judgment is gone. John 3:18 says, βWhoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of Godβs one and only Son.β
As Christians, part of understanding the love of God is knowing that Godβs judgment fell on Jesus at the cross so we can be spared. John 3:17 says, βFor God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.β Jesus Christ is the Savior in whom anyone who believes is saved. We learn from the Scriptures that the only person who must fear judgment is the one who rejects Jesus Christ. Scripture teaches that nothing can separate the believer from the love of God in Christ. Romans 8:38-39 says, βFor I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.β
Godβs love for sinners is why Christ died on the Cross of Calvary. Godβs love for those who trust in Christ is why He holds them in His hand and promises never to let them go (John 10:29).
