What Animals Can We Eat According To The Bible

What Animals Can We Eat According To The Bible? The Biblical book of Leviticus in chapter 11 lists the dietary restrictions God gave to the nation of Israel. The dietary laws included prohibitions against eating pork, shellfish, shrimp, and many types of seafood, most insects, scavenger birds, and several other animals. It is important to understand that the dietary rules were never intended to apply to anyone other than the Israelites. The food laws had a purpose to distinguish the Israelites from all other nations. After this purpose had been fulfilled, Jesus declared all foods clean (Mark 7:19). In later times, God gave Apostle Peter a vision that implied formerly unclean animals could be eaten: “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean” (Acts 10:15).

Amazingly, when Jesus Christ died on the Cross at Calvary, He fulfilled the Old Testament Law (Romans 10:4; Galatians 3:24-26; Ephesians 2:15). This includes the laws regarding clean and unclean foods. However, Romans 14:1-23 teaches us that not everyone is mature enough in the faith to understand and accept that all foods are clean. With this in mind, if we are with someone who would be offended by our eating of “unclean” food, we should give up our right to do so in order not to offend them. However, we do have the right to eat whatever we want, but we do not have the right to offend other people, even if they are wrong in word and/or action. Today, Christians have the right to eat whatever they want so long as it does not cause someone else to stumble in his/her faith.

What The Scriptures Say About What We Should Eat

In the New Covenant of Grace, the Scriptures are far more concerned with how much Christians eat than what foods they eat. Physical appetites are an analogy of our ability to control ourselves. That’s why if we are unable to control our eating habits, we’ll probably also be unable to control other habits such as those of the mind (lust, covetousness, unrighteous hatred/anger). Likewise, we’ll also be unable to keep our mouths from strife or gossip. As followers of Christ or Christians, we are not to allow our appetites to control us; rather, we are to exercise discipline over them (Deuteronomy 21:20; Proverbs 23:2; 2 Peter 1:5-7; 2 Timothy 3:1-9; 2 Corinthians 10:5).

What The Scriptures Say About Eating Meat

Is Eating Meat A Sin?

We are made to understand by the Scriptures that sin is an act against God’s will. Original sin is inherited from Adam and Eve, while individual Christians are responsible or at the origin of their personal sins. As a matter of fact, breaking God’s commandments are considered sinful but there remains disagreement about what acts or omissions are considered sinful. Most people of faith do not believe that eating meat is a sin, though there is an increasing number of Christians who think that being vegan brings them closer to God and also closer to the Peaceable Kingdom that is prophesied in Isaiah.

The prophecy in Isaiah 11:6-9 reads, “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”

Simon Kittle, a Christian philosopher, in his words reminds us that many of our beliefs about animals, “stem not from the Bible but from cultural habit,” and if we recognize that, it “might enable us to evaluate honestly the violence we are now implicated in, not so that we can condemn ourselves or be condemned by others – but so that we can turn from it, and join with God in seeking that Peaceable Kingdom. As we read the Bible, our prayer should be that God would deliver us from the evil of causing unnecessary violence to animals.”

From a Biblical perspective, we can say without a doubt that before The Fall, Adam and Eve were given the wealth and abundance of plants to eat but after sin entered the world, they were told they could eat animals and that those animals would live in fear of them. The Christian Vegetarians and Vegans UK says “From a biblical perspective the concept of eating anything but plants by any animal-human or otherwise – only entered the world after The Fall. That surely should tell the reader something.”

Likewise, Dr. Andy Alexis-Baker, vegan, author, and lecturer in Theology and Religious Studies at Arrupe College of Loyola University Chicago says, I did not then and do not now think I had all the answers, but when I looked at how God calls people to live, I knew that the arc of my life had to bend toward justice, toward peace, toward compassion.” Fascinatingly, having compassion for animals is something that many Christians are now embracing. And this is eventually making many abstain from meat.

Therefore, Is It Wrong/Sinful to Eat Meat?

Today, Christians frequently ask questions like, “Does the Bible state that it is wrong to eat meat? And does the Bible command us to eat just vegetables and not kill animals for food?” Sincerely speaking, the Bible has never clearly stood against the eating of meat nor clearly commanded vegetarianism for all and many people believe that eating meat is permeated in New Testament times because Jesus Christ Himself ate meat. The Bible tells us that when Jesus Christ appeared to His disciples after His resurrection, He joined them to eat fish (Luke 24:41 – 43). We also know that under the Law of Moses, numerous animals were ritualistically slaughtered and offered to God by various burnt sacrifices (Leviticus 1, 3 – 7). The priests were allowed to eat the meat from what they offered under certain limitations (Leviticus 7:31 – 35).

Due to the fact that God had the priests kill thousands of animals over the centuries, many Christians argue that it is not a sin to kill an animal and eat its meat. It is important to understand that they symbolically represented the sacrifice of Jesus for humanity’s sins in advance. Likewise, God did command the consumption of meat for the celebration of the Passover. In honoring the first Passover, Each Israelite Family was to take a lamb or goat, kill it, and put its blood on the doorposts and lintel. They were to eat its meat by morning and burn the leftovers before daybreak. This is clearly described in Exodus 12. Several centuries later, John the Baptist proclaimed Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29, 36).

More facts

Long ago before the time of Moses and the establishment of the Levitical Priesthood, Abraham and Noah killed animals and offered them as sacrifices to God. Under the law of clean and unclean foods, Israelites were allowed to eat the meat of cows, sheep, and goats, but weren’t allowed to ingest pigs, camels, and rabbits (Numbers 11, Deuteronomy 14:3 – 21). Following these general rules, man believes that God does not require vegetarianism of His people. Despite the fact that God did not like the way Israelites in the wilderness demanded flesh to eat when they had a bad attitude, and punished them for it, He was still willing to provide them with a huge number of quail to eat in a special situation (Numbers 11:4, 13, 31 – 33). If eating meat was sinful, we don’t think God would have sent them the quail.

Another interesting counterargument worth examining is that Adam and Eve when they were created, were not directly told they could eat the flesh of animals. Although this may be true, the Bible does clearly state that God gave man authority over all the animals and was told to rule over them (Genesis 1:28 – 30). Likewise, there is no doubt that God, after Noah’s flood, gave humanity permission to eat meat (after the blood is drained away – see Genesis 9:3 – 4). The Bible also tells us that animals will not eat each other during the millennium (Isaiah 11:6 – 9). But because there will be animal sacrifice in the millennium (viewed as memorial in nature because Christ had made the Ultimate Sacrifice), after the second coming of Jesus Christ, we cannot say those restrictions will also apply to people.

What You Should Hold To

Romans 14:14 says, “I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.”

Romans 14:17-18 says, “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.

Romans 14:19-21 says, “Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.

Romans 14:22-23 says, “So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.”

Nevertheless, among those that chew the cud or part the hoof, you shall not eat these: The camel, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you.
