What Does The Bible Say About Advent? Advent is the season of meditative preparation for the Nativity of Christ at Christmas and the expected return of Christ in the Second Coming. In other words, Advent is the season of the year leading up to Christmas. It is respectfully observed with several traditions and rituals by Catholics and other liturgical groups such as Lutherans, Anglicans, and Methodists. Likewise in recent years, many evangelical services have experienced the addition of Advent celebrations in one way or another. Notice that the word advent itself means “arrival” or “an appearing or coming into place.” Christians often speak of Christ’s “first advent” and “second advent”; thereby referring to His first and second comings to earth. And as such, His first advent would be the incarnation which is celebrated at Christmas. Christmas is the celebration of the incarnation of Jesus Christ.

The word “Advent” is derived from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming” which translates to the Greek word parousia. Scholars believe that during the 4th and 5th centuries in Spain and Gaul, Advent was a season of preparation for the baptism of new Christians at the January feast of Epiphany, the celebration of God’s incarnation represented by the visit of the Magi to the baby Jesus (Matthew 2:1), His baptism in the Jordan River by John the Baptist (John 1:29), and His first miracle at Cana (John 2:1). During this season, Christians would spend 40 days in penance, prayer, and fasting to prepare for this celebration. Initially, there was little connection between Advent and Christmas. However, by the 6th century, Roman Christians had linked Advent to the second coming of Christ. It was around the Middle Ages that the Advent season was explicitly linked to Christ’s first coming at Christmas.

Advent Symbolism

The Advent season symbolizes the current situation of the church in these “last days” (Acts 2:17, Hebrews 1:2) as the Lord God’s people wait for the return of Christ in glory to fully establish His eternal kingdom. Here, the church is in a similar situation to Israel at the end of the Old Testament: in exile, waiting and hoping prayerfully for the coming of the Messiah. Notice how Israel looked back to God’s past gracious actions on their behalf in actively leading them out of Egypt in the Exodus, and on this basis, they called for the Lord God once again to act for them. Likewise, the church, during Advent, looks back upon Christ’s coming in celebration while at the same time looking forward in eager anticipation to the coming of Christ’s kingdom which shall be fully established when He returns for His people.

The Advent season lasts for four (4) Sundays. It begins on the fourth (4th) Sunday before Christmas, or the nearest Sunday to November 30. Advent ends on Christmas Eve and is not considered part of the Christmas season. The Advent celebration is both a commemoration of Christ’s first coming and an anticipation of His second coming. As Israel longed for Christ’s first coming, the church now commemorates Christ’s first coming and long for Christ’s second coming. Notice how the Advent hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” perfectly represents the church’s cry during the Advent season:
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
 And ransom captive Israel,
 That mourns in lonely exile here
 Until the Son of God appears.
 Rejoice! Rejoice!
 Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
While Israel would have sung this song in expectation of Christ’s first coming, the church sings it in commemoration of that first coming and in expectation of the second coming.

Advent Liturgy and Practice

Churches that observe Advent usually decorate their sanctuaries in purple, which is the liturgical color of Advent (or in some cases royal blue). Some churches change the color to rose on the third or fourth Sunday of Advent as a way of emphasizing a greater level of joy during the season. As an established way to balance the two aspects of remembrance and anticipation, the first two Sundays in Advent look forward to Christ’s second coming, and the last two Sundays look backward to remember Christ’s first coming. Over the four weeks that constitute the Advent season, Scripture readings move from Biblical passages about Christ’s glorious return in judgment to Old Testament passages about the expectation of the coming Messiah to New Testament passages about the announcement of Christ’s arrival by the Angels and John the Baptist.

Advent is intended to be a season of fasting, much like Lent. The Eastern Orthodox Church does not observe Advent per se, but they do respectfully keep a long fast before Christmas. In the West, Advent has developed a more festive tone, although many churches also keep a fast while laying emphasis on prayer and penitence akin to what takes place during the Lenten season. Advent, sometimes called “Little Lent” is seen as a time to prepare one’s heart for Christmas and for the second coming of Christ. During the Advent season, a deep reflection on the violence and evil in the world causes us to cry out to the Lord God to make things right. Similarly, our own sinfulness and need for grace lead us to pray for God’s mercy and favor through Christ.

What the Catechism of the Catholic Church says about Advent

Concerning Advent, the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 524) says: When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior’s first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming. By celebrating the precursor’s birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his desire: “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

Advent Wreaths and Candles

The Advent wreath first appeared in Germany in 1839. A Lutheran minister working at a mission for children fabricated a wreath out of the wheel of a cart. He placed twenty (20) small red candles and four (4) large white candles inside the ring. The red candles were lit on weekdays, and the four white candles were lit on Sundays.
In due time, the Advent wreath was created out of evergreens symbolizing everlasting life in the midst of winter and death as the evergreen is continuously green. Additional decorations, like holly and berries, are occasionally added. Their red color points ahead to Jesus’ sacrifice and death on the cross. Pinecones can symbolize the new life that Jesus Christ brings through His resurrection. However, the most common Advent candle tradition involves four candles. A new candle is lit on each of the four Sundays before Christmas. The four candles traditionally represent hope, faith, joy, and peace.

The use of evergreen wreaths, branches, and trees happens to be one of the most common Advent traditions. On the first Sunday of Advent, churches and homes are decorated with green to symbolize the eternal life that Jesus Christ brings. An Advent wreath – an evergreen circle with four colored candles surrounding a white one in the middle – is placed in a prominent spot. The candles are then lit one at a time, on successive Sundays. The first candle to be lit is the candle of “hope” or “expectation.” The three (3) remaining candles on the perimeter are given various meanings depending on the church. On Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, the white center candle referred to as the “Christ Candle” is lit as a way of reminding us that Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, has come.

What are Advent readings? Advent readings are themed Scripture readings for each of the four Sundays of Advent. The four weeks of Advent are broken down into the themes:

1. Hope (or promise)
2. Preparation (waiting or prophecy)
3. Joy (peace)
4. Love (adoration)

Advent Calendars

Advent calendars are used to count down the days till Christmas. It contains a number of covered “windows” that are opened, one a day, until Christmas Day. Each open window clearly reveals a picture related to the season or a Bible verse or a poem or a treat of some kind. Many parents use an Advent calendar to teach their children the true meaning of Christmas – although there are secular versions of the calendars, as well.

Should Christians Observe Advent?

Should Christians observe Advent? Behold, this is a matter of personal conviction. Here is what the Bible says or the biblical principle to follow: “One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord” (Romans 14:5–6).

Brethren, there is certainly nothing wrong with commemorating Jesus’ birth and anticipating His return. In fact, such commemoration and anticipation should be an everyday part of our lives. Celebrating Advent can be a good reminder of what the season is truly all about and in this lies its greatest values.

Is Advent Biblical?

Is Advent biblical? Today, many protestant Christians reject Advent simply because they consider it to be a Roman Catholic practice. For most of these, it isn’t so much about the Roman Catholic aspect of Advent that is really problematic, but the fact that Advent is not explicitly taught in Scripture. One can’t turn to a place in the Bible that explicitly teaches about Advent or commands Christians to set aside four weeks prior to Christmas Day as a season of waiting, hoping, and yearning. But does this mean that Advent shouldn’t be observed? For some people, the answer is “yes” since it is not explicitly taught in Scripture. We are more likely to find this kind of argument among non-instrumental Church of Christ beliefs. Likewise, they say since instruments are not explicitly mentioned in the New Testament teachings about worship, then we shouldn’t use instruments today.

Does Advent’s explicit absence from Scripture mean we shouldn’t observe it? If yes, then we must also abstain from Christian celebrations of Christmas and Easter, which also aren’t explicitly found in Scripture. Likewise, we might as well do away with the celebration of our Birth Days, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Independence Day. Furthermore, if we really believe that Christians can only do that which is explicitly taught in Scripture, then we shouldn’t go to a church building for worship, sit in chairs, use microphones, use hymnals, wear pants, or use digital projectors because all these are not explicitly taught in Scripture. Brethren, our concern here should be whether or not Advent is consistent with biblical themes and priorities. Is it biblical in this grander sense? Could its observance help one to grow in faith in a way that aligns with biblical truths? Yes.
