What Does The Bible Say About Pentecost Day?

What Does The Bible Say About Pentecost Day? By studying the Old Testament, we discover that Pentecost was one of the Jewish feast days. However, they didn’t actually call it Pentecost. Pentecost as we call it today is rather its Greek name. The Jews called it the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks. This feast is mentioned five places within the first five books of the Old Testament. That is, it is mentioned in Exodus 23, Exodus 24, Leviticus 16, Numbers 28, and Deuteronomy 16. This feast represented the celebration of the early weeks of harvest. Note that in Palestine, there were two harvests each year. The early harvest from their land came during the months of May and June while the final harvest came in the fall.

Pentecost was actually the celebration of the beginning of the early wheat harvest. Having this in mind, we can say with a high degree of certainty that Pentecost always fell sometime during mid-May or sometimes in early June. It is important to note that there were several observances, festivals, and celebrations that took place before Pentecost. For example, there was the Passover, there was Unleavened Bread, and there was the Celebration or Feast of FirstFruits. The beginning of the barley harvest marked the celebration of the Feast of FirstFruits. With these pieces of information, it becomes easy to figure out the date of Pentecost. As per the Old Testament, all who join the celebration of the Feast of FirstFruits, and beginning with that day, they were to count off 50 days. In this light, the fiftieth day would be the Day of Pentecost.

What Does The Bible Say About Pentecost Day?

From the Old Testament, we can deduce that the Feast of FirstFruits is the beginning of the Barley Harvest, and Pentecost the beginning of the Wheat Harvest. Since Pentecost was always 50 days after FirstFruits, and knowing that 50 days equals 7 weeks, it always came a “week of weeks” later. Having understood this, the Jews decided to either call it the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks. This makes up for a greater part of what the Bible says about the Pentecost day.

What does the Scripture say about Pentecost?

The Scriptures say much about the Day of Pentecost. It is important for us to start by getting it once and or all that Pentecost is significant in both the Old and New Testaments. “Pentecost” is actually the Greek name for a festival referred to in the Old Testament as the Feast of Weeks (Leviticus 23:15; Deuteronomy 16:9). This Greek word means “Fifty (50)” and refers to the fifty days that have elapsed since the wave offering of Passover. The Feast of Weeks was a celebration that marked the end of the grain harvest. Of greater interest is the way it is used in the book of Joel and Acts. Pentecost marks the beginning of the Church age from an objective look back to Joel’s prophecy (Joel 2:28–32) and forward to the last words of Jesus Christ that promised the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).

Acts 2:1–3 happens to be the only Biblical reference to the actual events of the Day of Pentecost. Behold, Pentecost is reminiscent of the Last Supper; in both instances, the disciples are recorded as being gathered in the house for what proves to be an important event. The Last Supper was one through which the disciples witnessed the end of the Messiah’s Earthly Ministry as He commanded them to remember Him after His death till He returns. At Pentecost, the disciples or followers of Jesus Christ witnessed the birth of the New Testament Church in the coming of the Holy Spirit to indwell all believers. This happened in order to confirm or make true the promise of Jesus Christ not to allow His followers without a comforter.

Facts About Pentecost

The scene of the disciples in the room at Pentecost links the beginning of the Holy Spirit’s work in the New Testament Church with the conclusion of Christ’s Earthly Ministry in the upper room before His Crucifixion for our sins. The description of fire and wind as mentioned in the recount of the Day of Pentecost, resounds throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament. We are told that the sound of the wind on the day of Pentecost was “rushing” and “mighty.”  Behold, there are several scriptural references to the power of wind. Such was always understood to be under God’s control. We can support this message by reading from the Old Testament ( Psalm 18:42; Exodus 10:13; and Isaiah 11:15) and the New Testament (Matthew 14:23–32).

Of greater importance than wind as power is wind as life as mentioned in the Old Testament (Job 12:10) and as Spirit mentioned in the New Testament (John 3:8). Just as the First Adam received the breath of physical life (Genesis 2:7), so the Second Adam, Jesus Christ, brings the breath of spiritual life to all who believe Him (John 14:6). On the other hand, fire is often associated in the Old Testament with the Presence of God Almighty (  Isaiah 10:17; Exodus 3:2; 13:21–22; 24:17) and with His Holiness ( Malachi 3:2; Psalm 97:3). Likewise, in the New Testament of the Bible, fire is associated with the Sovereign Presence of God (Hebrews 12:29) and the purification He brings through Christ to a man’s life (Revelation 3:18).

What you should note about Pentecost

The Almighty God’s Presence and Holiness are implied in the Pentecostal Tongues of fire. In short, fire is identified with Christ Himself (Revelation 1:14; 19:12). This association of wind and fire naturally underlines the Pentecost gift of the Holy Spirit, who would comfort, guide, and teach the disciples the things of God’s Kingdom as revealed by Christ. Another important aspect of the Day of Pentecost worth underlining is the miraculous speaking in foreign tongues which enabled people from various language groups to understand the testimony of the Apostles about Jesus the Messiah. Another important thing to know about the Day of Pentecost is the bold and incisive preaching or testimony of Apostle Peter to a Jewish audience.

The Bible tells us the the Holy Spirit was at work thereby making the effect of the sermon powerful, as listeners were “cut to the heart” (Acts 2:37) and instructed by Apostle Peter to “Sincerely Repent and be Baptized” (Acts 2:38). The narrative comes to conclusion that three thousand (3,000) souls were convicted by the Holy Spirit through Apostle Peter’s testimony to join the Christian fellowship. Peter further encouraged them to be faithful to the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ as they maintain hope for Eternal Life in the presence of God Almighty. They were all happy to have been saved by Christ from Eternal Condemnation (Lake of Fire). As days went by, more souls were added to the Christian fellowship through the breaking of bread and prayers, Apostolic signs and wonders, and a community in which everyone’s needs were met.

Why is Pentecost significant to Christianity?

Unlike the ancient Jews, modern Christians regularly observe Pentecost as a Holiday, not to celebrate the wheat harvest. It is a special day for them to remember when the Holy Spirit invaded the Church in Acts 2. Inline with what the Bible says about the Pentecost day are the following detailed reasons why this observation is significant to Christianity:

1. The Holy Spirit filled the Church with Power and convinced 3,000 people from the audience of Peter to accept his testimony and follow Christ

We can read a detailed account of this in Acts 2. It reports that after Jesus ascended into heaven, His disciples were gathered together for the Feast of Harvest (aka Pentecost), and the Holy Spirit “filled the whole house where they were sitting” (Acts 2:2). In addition, Acts 2:4 says, “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” This strange and supernatural occurrence drew a large crowd, and Peter stood up under the influence of the Holy Spirit as he invited them to believe, repent, and get baptized so as to experience the light of salvation that comes from Christ.

The Holy Spirit was in action and by the end of the day, the church grew by 3,000 people (Acts 2:14). This is one of the greatest reasons why Christians still celebrate Pentecost. John Gill says, “Through this baptism of the Holy Ghost and fire, the apostles became more knowing, and had a greater understanding of the mysteries of the Gospel, and were more qualified to preach it to people of all nations and languages.”

2. The Holy Spirit was prophesied in the Old Testament and Promised by Jesus Christ

In John 14:26, Jesus promises to pray and ask His Father to send forth the Holy Spirit to all those who believe in Him. He portrayed the Holy Spirit as a Comforter and Helper who was to dwell in those who believe in Him for all times. Let’s support this message by reading from John 14:26 – “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”

This New Testament event is also important because it fulfills an Old Testament prophecy that was written in Joel 2:28-29 – “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”

Three (3) Historical Insights into Pentecost

There are three important things that you should know about Pentecost. These three things will help you to better understand Acts 2. They are as follows:

1. Pentecost was a pilgrim festival

By pilgrim festival, we mean that according to the Jewish Law, all the adult Jewish men would come from wherever they were living to gather in Jerusalem in order to personally partake in this celebration.

2. Pentecost was a holiday

The Festival of Harvest (aka Pentecost) was a holiday. That is, school was out, the shops were closed, and the conditions were united to make it a party time.

3. There were certain celebrations and sacrifices and offerings which were prescribed in the Law of Moses for the Day of Pentecost

On this day, the High Priest was to take two loaves of freshly baked wheat bread and offer them before the Lord. The wheat bread was freshly made from the newly harvested wheat.

To cut things short, we can say that Pentecost in the times of the Apostles was more of a great and grand harvest celebration among the Jews. This crowded the streets of Jerusalem with thousands of pilgrims who had come from every point of the compass to celebrate the goodness of God and the bringing in of the wheat harvest. Let’s now look at what the Bible says about the Pentecost day.
