What Did Jesus Mean When He Said, I Am The Way And The Truth And The Life John 14 6

What Did Jesus Mean When He Said, “I Am The Way And The Truth And The Life” (John 14:6)? The Bible says much about having access to God. Bible verses teach that access to God is of God (Psalm 65:4) through Jesus Christ (John 14:6). Psalm 65:4 says, “Blessed is the one you choose and bring near, to dwell in your courts! We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house, the holiness of your temple!” In addition, John 14:6 says, “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” As Christians or followers of Jesus Christ, we are in union with Him through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our faith in Him gives us access to God the Father Almighty. Behold, He is the gateway into God’s Kingdom (John 10:7).

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Amazingly, God wants the world to have access to His Kingdom and obtain His gift of Eternal Life through Jesus Christ. In other words, God has made it possible for us to seek and find Him through His beloved Son, Jesus Christ. With this in mind, anyone who acknowledges his/her sinful nature, repents, and welcomes Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world is given access to God’s Kingdom. It is the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed on the cross at Calvary that gives us access to God’s Kingdom. This blood takes away our sins when we Sincerely Repent and follow the ways of God.

Scriptures About Having Access To God

“I am the Way and the Truth and the Life” is one of the seven (7) “I Am” statements of Jesus Christ. Made/uttered on the last night before His betrayal, death, and resurrection, this statement is of great importance in Christianity. We are made to understand from the Bible that for three (03) years, Jesus’ disciples followed and learned from Him. They had placed their hopes in Him as the Messiah, Promised Deliverer, although they still didn’t understand how He was going to accomplish the deliverance. After the Last Supper, Jesus Christ began speaking about His departure, which led to questions from his disciples.

In John 13:33, Jesus Christ said, “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.” Upon hearing this, Peter asked Jesus where He was going. This question was asked because Peter as well as the other disciples of Jesus Christ did not understand that Jesus was speaking of His suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension to Heaven. Jesus’ response was, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” Despite Jesus’ response, Peter still misunderstood and declared that he would follow Jesus anywhere and even lay down his life if need be. However, Jesus Christ patiently continued teaching them, but this time around, He began speaking plainly about Heaven, describing the place He was going to prepare for them (John 14:2–3).

Jesus Christ Continues Teaching His Disciples

Jesus Christ said to them, “You know the way to the place where I am going” (John 14:4). Speaking on the behalf of all the disciples, Thomas said that they did not know where He was going, and as a result could not know the way to take in order to follow Him. It was in answer to this question that Jesus Christ uttered one of the seven famous “I Am” statements. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

I Am

In the Greek language, “I Am” is a special and very intense way of referring to oneself. It’s like saying, “I myself, and only I, am.” There are several other occasions in the Bible that we hear Jesus using these words. In Matthew 22:32, Jesus Christ quotes Exodus 3:6, where God makes use of the same intensive form to say, “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Likewise, in John 8:58, Jesus Christ said, “Truly, truly I say unto you, before Abraham was, I am.” The Jews clearly understood Jesus Christ to be calling Himself God because they took up stones to stone Him for committing blasphemy in equating Himself with God.

In Matthew 28:20, when Jesus Christ was giving instructions for the great commission, He gave it emphasis by saying “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Likewise, when the soldiers came seeking Jesus in the garden the night before his crucifixion, He told them, “I Am He,” and His words were so powerful that the soldiers fell to the ground (John 18:4–6). Behold, these words reflect the very name of God in Hebrew, Yahweh, which means “To Be” or “The Self-Existing One.” It is the name of Power and Authority, and Jesus Christ claimed it as His own.

The Way

Behold, Jesus Christ used the definite article to distinguish Himself as “The Only Way.” We know that the way is a route or path, and the disciples had clearly expressed their confusion about where Jesus Christ was going and how they could follow. As He had earlier told them and was still telling them (and is telling all of us) “Follow Me.” Truthfully speaking, there is no other path or route to Heaven, no other way to the Father (God Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth). Apostle Peter reiterated this very truth years later to the rulers in Jerusalem, saying about Jesus, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Brethren, the exclusive nature of the only path to salvation is expressed in the words “I Am The Way.”

The Truth

Still, in John 14:6, we hear Jesus Christ using the definite article to emphasize Himself as “The Only Truth.” Psalm 119:142 says, “Your law is the truth.” While giving the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus Christ reminded His listeners of several points of the Law, then said, “But I say unto you . . .” (Matthew 5:22, 28, 32, 34, 39, 44), thereby equating Himself with the Law of God as the authoritative standard of righteousness. As a matter of fact, Jesus Christ said that He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 5:17). Jesus Christ, as the incarnate Word of God (John 1:1), is the source of all truth.

The Life

Surprisingly, Jesus Christ who told His disciples on several occasions about His impending death claims to be the only source of all life. In  John 10:17–18, Jesus Christ declared that He was going to lay down His life for His sheep, and then take it back again. While on Earth, He spoke about His authority over life and death as being granted to Him by God the Father Almighty. In John 14:19, Jesus Christ gave the promise that “because I live, you also will live.” Behold, the deliverance that Jesus Christ was about to provide was not a political or social deliverance (which most of the Jews were seeking), but a true deliverance from a life of bondage to sin and death to a life of freedom to eternity.

Jesus Christ, in His own words, declared Himself to be the great “I Am,” the only path to heaven, the only true measure of righteousness, and the source of both physical and spiritual life. Behold, He was staking His claim as the very God of Creation, the Lord who blessed Abraham, and the Holy One who inhabits eternity. He said all these to prepare the Apostles for the task of taking the Gospel to the four corners of the world and also to prepare them for the dark days that were ahead. However, the Bible tells us that they still didn’t understand and it took them several visits from the risen Lord to free them from unbelief. Once they understood the truth about God’s word, they became changed people and spread the good news about Jesus Christ everywhere.

True Followers of Jesus Christ

It is clear that we can only have access to God through Jesus Christ. In other words, access to God’s Kingdom is given to followers of Jesus Christ. True followers of Jesus Christ are those who love Him. Those who love Jesus Christ are those who obey His Commandments/Teachings. And anyone who welcomes Jesus Christ welcomes the One who sent Him.

In summary, we follow Jesus Christ the same way His immediate/first disciples did long ago. Behold, they heard the words of Jesus Christ and believed them. They took His words and obeyed them. They confessed their sins to Jesus Christ as their Lord and God. The Apostles believed that He died to take the punishment of their sins and rose from the dead to give them new life. They followed His example and command to tell others the truth about sin, righteousness, and judgment. By following Him in “The Way,” we have faith and are reassured to follow Him all the way to Heaven.
