God And Sudden Death

Discover God And Sudden Death. Does the Bible recognize accidental killing and is a person to be held responsible for it? Such are questions regularly asked by Christians when faced with accidental killing. However, the Bible does make a distinction between premeditated murder and accidental killing. Deuteronomy 19:1-3 says “When the Lord your God has destroyed the nations whose land he is giving you, and when you have driven them out and settled in their towns and houses, then set aside for yourselves three cities in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess. Determine the distances involved and divide into three parts the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that a person who kills someone may flee for refuge to one of these cities.”

In addition, Deuteronomy 19:4-7, 10 says, “This is the rule concerning anyone who kills a person and flees there for safety—anyone who kills a neighbor unintentionally, without malice aforethought. For instance, a man may go into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and as he swings his ax to fell a tree, the head may fly off and hit his neighbor and kill him. That man may flee to one of these cities and save his life. Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue him in a rage, overtake him if the distance is too great, and kill him even though he is not deserving of death, since he did it to his neighbor without malice aforethought. This is why I command you to set aside for yourselves three cities. Do this so that innocent blood will not be shed in your land, which the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance, and so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.”

What The Scriptures Say

It is important for us to understand that the procedure in Deuteronomy 19:1-7, 10 was devised to accommodate the children of Israel under the Mosaic Law. New Testament saints, however, are to obey the laws of the nation in which they live. This is supported by Titus 3:1 which says, “Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good.” Therefore, if a Christian were to accidentally kill someone today, he/she should not flee, but trust God to vindicate him/her as he/she proceeds through the normal legal procedure.

Joshua 20:1-9 – “Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘Appoint the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses, that the manslayer who strikes any person without intent or unknowingly may flee there. They shall be for you a refuge from the avenger of blood. He shall flee to one of these cities and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city and explain his case to the elders of that city. Then they shall take him into the city and give him a place, and he shall remain with them. And if the avenger of blood pursues him, they shall not give up the manslayer into his hand, because he struck his neighbor unknowingly, and did not hate him in the past. …

Deuteronomy 19:1-10 – “When the Lord your God cuts off the nations whose land the Lord your God is giving you, and you dispossess them and dwell in their cities and in their houses, you shall set apart three cities for yourselves in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess. You shall measure the distances and divide into three parts the area of the land that the Lord your God gives you as a possession, so that any manslayer can flee to them. “This is the provision for the manslayer, who by fleeing there may save his life. If anyone kills his neighbor unintentionally without having hated him in the past— as when someone goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and his hand swings the axe to cut down a tree, and the head slips from the handle and strikes his neighbor so that he dies—he may flee to one of these cities and live, …
