That man may flee to one of these cities and save his life. Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue him in a rage, overtake him if the distance is too great, and kill him even though he is not deserving of death, since he did it to his neighbor without malice aforethought. This is why I command you to set aside for yourselves three cities. Do this so that innocent blood will not be shed in your land, which the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance, and so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.”

What The Scriptures Say

It is important for us to understand that the procedure in Deuteronomy 19:1-7, 10 was devised to accommodate the children of Israel under the Mosaic Law. New Testament saints, however, are to obey the laws of the nation in which they live. This is supported by Titus 3:1 which says, “Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good.” Therefore, if a Christian were to accidentally kill someone today, he/she should not flee, but trust God to vindicate him/her as he/she proceeds through the normal legal procedure.

David said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.” And David said to him, “How did it go?
