What Does The Bible Say About Actors

What Does The Bible Say About Actors? Can A Christian Consider A Career In Acting/entertainment? What Does The Bible Say About Actors/Actresses? All these questions are answered in one way or the other by the Bible through its many verses. However, these are hard questions to answer because the entertainment industry includes many aspects. It is important to understand the vast difference between a theatre that presents only classics such as Shakespeare’s plays and TV shows that glorify sex and violence. While both are considered part of the entertainment industry and involve actors and actresses, the impact on the performers and the audiences is quite different. With this in mind, Christians considering a career in acting or performing must consider the bearing their roles will have on themselves spiritually, the lifestyle into which they’ll be entering, and the influence their performances will have on others.

From a Biblical point of view, it is clearly not an option for a Christian actor/actress/performer to get involved in a movie that glorifies sin or the devil’s work. Behold, actors struggle to find roles and this leaves them vulnerable to whatever parts that come their way, especially when they are first starting out. For unbelieving actors/actresses, the decision to take a part in a movie involves little more than the effect it will have on their careers and future roles and the money they’ll earn. But for the faithful Christian, there is also the problem of whether the role glorifies God or at least it is not actually glorifying rebellion against Him with violence, sex, or other evil practices. An actor is more likely to say, “I’m just acting or playing the role of a character. It is not the real me neither does it portray my personal convictions.”

What The Scriptures Say About Acting

The problem with acting lies in how your role influences yourself and others. That is, the message it passes to yourself and the audience. Behold, this message can actually build or destroy them. In the entertainment industry, the highest pay packages are often prepared for those taking the ungodly roles probably because we live in a world where the Devil has a huge influence on such matters. However, the faithful Christian actor should not take roles or parts which promote Satan’s agenda. The governing principle involved here is found in 1 Corinthians 10:31 – “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” With this in mind, make sure that the role you are acting is glorifying God in one way or the other.

In the same light, the issue of the lifestyle of the actors/actresses must be a consideration for a Christian. Behold, there is an enormous amount of drugs, alcohol, and immoral behavior in the entertainment industry. Most young people who are eager to get the “big break” in this industry are often used and abused by those in power. While it’s still possible for a Christian to be in this world and not be affected by it, 1 Corinthians 15:33 clearly warns us, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” Likewise, the impact performers have on others must be considered. When unbelievers see professing Christians in movies, TV shows, or live performances that promote ungodliness, they sense hypocrisy and are given cause to “blaspheme the name of God” (Romans 2:24). Note that Certain actions or performances can be detrimental to the faith of others.

Important Advice

It is clear that as Christians, we must pay attention to the impacts of our performances on others. Our performances can positively or negatively influence our audience. It can as well lead to a detrimental effect on the faith of other believers, especially young people and those immature in the faith. Behold, Jesus Christ spoke harshly of those who cause “one of these little ones who believe in me to sin” (Matthew 18:6). Likewise, Romans 14:13 says, “Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. ”

With this in mind, the decision to enter into a career in acting or entertainment must be made prayerfully, seeking God’s wisdom (James 1:5) and the counsel of mature Christians, remembering always that “everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness” (2 Timothy 2:19). And in your acting career, never forget the governing principle found in 1 Corinthians 10:31 – “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
