What Does The Bible Say About The Mind? By mind here, we mean a sound mind as pointed out by the Bible. However, one might ask, “what does the Bible mean when it refers to a sound mind?” The very expression “sound mind” is found in 2 Timothy 1:7 – “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Sophronismos is the original Greek word translated “Sound Mind.” It is also worth pointing out that this is the only time that this word appears in the Bible. The Greek word sophronismos is regarded in other Bible versions as “self-discipline” (NIV, “self-control” (ESV), NLT), “good judgment” (GW), “discipline” (NASB), and “sound judgment” (CSB).

The different translations of this Greek word seems to convey different meanings. Hence, one might simply ask, “What exactly does sophronismos mean? or what is Apostle Paul referring to when he tells Timothy that God has given us the spirit of a sound mind?” It is important to understand here that Paul is writing to Timothy from prison. He knew that the time of his execution was drawing near. With this in mind, Paul writes to Timothy this profoundly intimate letter which is filled with encouragement, love, strength, and concern. Apostle Paul knew that Timothy would need strength, courage and determination to carry-on with the enormous responsibility of his calling to lead the church in spreading the gospel to all people.

In 2 Timothy 1:6 which is the preceding verse to that on the spirit of sound mind, we hear Apostle Paul reminding Timothy of the indwelling gift of the Holy Spirit within him and encouraging him to “fan that gift into flames.” Apostle Paul clearly knew that Timothy will need to counter his natural tendency towards quiet timidity knowing well-fully that the Spirit of God lives within him. He was reassuring Timothy that the Spirit will empower him with boldness rather than fear, and with love and a sound mind. In other words, Timothy was required to rely on God’s Spirit to do whatever God wants him to do. Being a christian filled with God’s Spirit, Timothy was able to accomplish God’s will in his life through love. He was of a sound mind because of the presence of God’s Spirit within him.

It is the work of God’s Spirit within us that brings forth a sound mind. It is important to understand here that the sound mind that Apostle Paul is talking about is a mind that is under the control of God’s Spirit. Looking from the angle of self-discipline, the Greek word sophronismos points to “careful,” “rational,” “sensible thinking.” A sound mind is based on the wisdom and clarity that God imparts rather than being manipulated by the fear that comes from the enemy of God. It is unfortunate that today, just as in the days of Timothy, fear is a driving force in the world. One might ask, “how?” Today, fear steers up social media frenzies, inspires news headlines, and motivates advertising campaigns.

Facts you should know about having a sound mind

It is important to note here that fear is one of the devil’s greatest tools to confuse our minds, lead us to misunderstanding, cause irrational thoughts, and derail us from the will of God Almighty. It is for this reason the the Word of God highly encourages us to cultivate a healthy, renewed mind that can process everything through faith in God’s sovereign ability. Let’s support this message by reading from Romans 12:2 – “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

A sound mind is one that is stable and healthy. Also note that a sound mind is highly linked to our attitude and outlook as believers. A sound mind is one that focuses on God’s Kingdom, it’s advancement and the fulfillment of God’s will rather than being concerned or worried about the careers and problems of this world (Colossians 1:1–2). Such is the mind that is actively alert, sober, and focused on the hope that we have in Jesus Christ, the lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. It is clear that anyone who Believes, Sincerely Repents, and obeys the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ is set-apart as a beneficiary of God’s special gift of Eternal Life. A sound mind easily recognizes this truth and who we are in Christ, and does not focus or depend on human strength or wisdom (2 Corinthians 10:3–5).

Maintaining a sound mind

A sound mind is maintained through prayer and purity of the heart. Let’s support this message by reading from Philippians 4:6–8 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” A sound mind is such that it stabilizes our inner world.

When Apostle Paul says that God has given us the spirit of a sound mind (or discipline, self-control, and sound judgment), he is not saying that we’ll be able to train harder, eat more, or study more. Apostle Paul clearly recognizes the fact that God’s Spirit yields moral judgement, obedience, and right living. He meant that the Holy Spirit transforms our way of thinking, speaking, and acting. In short, He renews our mind and changes who we are in order to make us more like Christ.
