Bible Verses About Food

There are many Bible Verses About Food worth knowing that will keep you on the right dietary path. The Bible actually says a lot about food. However, before we reveal these Bible Verses On Food, it is important that we first discuss on God’s general purposes for food. There are many ways through which we can use to approach this very topic. It is without doubt that everyone knows the pleasure that is related to eating. In simple terms, good food is enjoyable, for God intended it to be so. Let’s support this message by reading what the Bible says: “God created [food] to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. …[He] richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment” (1 Timothy 4:3; 6:7).

The enjoyment that comes from food is multiplied by dinning with family members, friends, and loved ones; a phenomenon which Christ Himself appreciated. The enjoyment we derive from eating good food is a demonstration of God’s goodness. In other words, food is a demonstration of our Dependence on God. This very thought is one which should bring us into humbleness as it turns us away from pride. Moses pointed out to this spiritual truth when He reminded the children of Israel about the sovereignty of God over their lives. We can read this from Deuteronomy 8:3 – “He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD

Bible Verses About Food

What the Scriptures say about Food

The scriptures are clear on the fact that from the very beginning, God has always been concerned about what His children consume in terms of food. Across the scriptures on several occasions, we perceive God changing the rules about eating. According to Genesis 1:29-30, Adam and Eve were vegetarians. Later in Genesis 9:3-4, God told Noah that he could also eat any animal, but not its blood. Later still, God in His sovereignty gave strict dietary regulations through Moses to the Nation of Israel (Leviticus 11). This is what contributed in making them distinct as His special people or chosen nation. It is important to understand here that God wanted the Nation of Israel to learn that no one was perfect and that no one could fully do all what He requires (Acts 15:10; Galatians 4:1-5:3).

Later still, when Jesus Christ lived on Earth, He once again declared that any food could be eaten without the fear of breaking God’s law. Let’s support this message by reading from Mark 7:18-23 – “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.) He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.” In addition, God gave a special vision to Peter, using him to convey this truth to the then largely Jewish church (Acts 10:1-48; 15:1-31).

The Bible and Food – Understanding how food brings division among Christians

It is sad to say that we do not always value the original purpose of food in our lives; which is to appreciate God’s goodness and our dependence on His provision. Instead, our beliefs about the Bible and Food are rapidly dividing, causing confusion and hatred among us. However, true followers of God’s laws in Christ are more concerned about the spiritual and physical well-being of others than their own diet. Such are the genuine followers of Christ that set aside their social practices and natural preferences in order to love others (1 Corinthians 8:1-13). As followers of Christ, we need to probe the motivations behind our dietary habits. When it concerns food, humans are more likely to be great hypocrites. Any choice of diet that makes us proud is not only damaging others but also damaging our relationships with God.

Apostle Paul puts it this way in Romans 14:3 – “The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.” It would be a mistake for us to neglect the issue of health in our write-up. A good number of us can’t tolerate certain foods and we should do our best to avoid them. More often, as it is the case with many, they lack self-control, a situation which leads them to eat poorly or in excess thereby turning God’s gift into an expression of selfishness and a means of personal suffering. The Bible also points out that we will eat in Heaven, a place of abundance where everything is under control. Hence, no misuse of food, no hunger, and no lack of self-control.

The Bible and Food – What the Bible says about Alcohol

As some think, if alcohol is inherently sinful, then we all have a problem. In the medical field, it is well-known that microorganisms in our digestive system regularly turn some of our food into alcohol – which can make-up for about 2 glasses of wine per day and even more. This indicates that we are always in possession of some amount of alcohol in our blood at all times. In a try to contradict or give an explanation for this, someone might simply say that the body’s internal functions are irrelevant, and that only our meant or purposefully actions really matter in determining whether alcohol is sinful. Although there are some elements of truth in this, when it actually comes to alcohol, the Bible is somewhere in the middle.

Jesus Christ Himself miraculously transformed water into wine (John 2:1-11). We don’t think that Christ would have done so if He considered alcohol to be a sinful substance which was never to be consumed by His followers. Alcohol acts as a preservative. Hence, wine is to fruit juice as cheese or yogurt is to milk. As it is the case with food, moderation is very essential. The Bible clearly stands against drunkenness and gluttony. Although we cannot live without food consumption, we can do without alcohol consumption. While others stay away from alcohol as a matter of self-control, others do so for health reasons. In addition, others find pleasure in moderately consuming it. Whatever the case, whether we drink moderately or abstain completely, we should not be proud (1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1). Personal desires come secondary. Our primary desires should be about loving God and neighbors.

Scriptural support

…whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1). “Nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the Kingdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 6:10).

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:18-20). “To Timothy my true son in the faith … Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses” (1 Timothy 1:1; 5:23).
