Bible Verses About Freedom in Jesus Christ

The Best Bible Verses About Freedom reflect our nature in Jesus Christ, the beloved Son of God Almighty. It is without doubt that everyone seeks freedom. In the West, freedom is perceived as the highest virtue. Hence, everyone who feels oppressed is in an active search of this virtue. However, freedom in Christ is not necessarily the same as Financial Freedom or Political Freedom. For sure, financial freedom is a term which many are verse with. In a simple language, financial freedom as defined by the world is a state of well-being where a person no longer worries about money related issues. It is also linked to what is known as Debt Freedom, a state where you no longer suffer from credit card debts, family debts, or go after credit card loans no guarantor.

Today, many are struggling to obtain political freedom or financial freedom. For more info on the financial aspect of this subject matter, read our write-up on Achieving Financial Freedom God’s Way. However, just as we previously mentioned, Freedom in Christ is different from the perception that we have about political freedom and financial or debt freedom. The notion the world has about freedom is that it is something worth fighting for by all the oppressed. However, we can say without doubt that some of the most oppressed people in history have had complete freedom in Jesus Christ. According to the Holy Scriptures, no one is actually free. A glance at Romans 6 in our Bibles portray Apostle Paul explaining that we are all slaves. That is, we are either slaves to sin or righteousness.

Bible Verses About Freedom

What does the Scriptures say about Freedom

In bringing elements of answers to what the scriptures say about freedom, we’ll base ourselves on Romans 6. Apostle Paul clearly tells us in this scripture that no one is free. That is, you are either a slave to sin or righteousness just as we previously mentioned. Note here that all those who are slaves to sin cannot free themselves. However, once we are freed from the penalty and power of sin through the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made on the Cross at Calvary, we become a different kind of slave. That is, we become slaves of righteousness through Christ. It is in this new kind of slavery that we find Complete Peace and Genuine Freedom that never ends. To partake in the slavery of righteousness that leads to Eternal Life, you must Sincerely Repent and start obeying the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ.

Although the message in Romans 6 seems to be a contradiction of what the world might perceive as freedom, the only genuine freedom in Christ is offered to those who are His slaves. It is unfortunate that slavery has come to mean degradation, inequality, and hardship before the eyes of those in the world. However, this is not how Christ applies it to His followers. Unlike what the world believes, the Biblical paradigm is the true freedom of the slave of Christ who benefits from true peace and joy, the fruits of genuine freedom. It is in this light that we hereby write to present the best Bible verses on freedom in Jesus Christ.

Christian Freedom as portrayed by the New Testament

The word doulos occurs 124 times in the New Testament and means “bondslave with no ownership rights of his own” or “Someone who belongs to another.” It is unfortunate to point out that most modern Bible versions, including the King James Version, most often translate this word as “Bond-servant” or “Servant.” But as we know, a servant is one who works for wages, and who, by virtue of his/her work, is absolutely owed something by his master. On the other hand, the Christian or believer has nothing to offer to Christ for the forgiveness of his sins. Note that as followers of Christ, He completely owns us given that He purchased us by shedding His own blood on the Cross at Calvary.

All Christians have been purchased with the blood of Jesus Christ and are now His possession. In simple terms, we’ve not been hired by Christ but we fully belong to Him as pointed out by Apostle Paul in Romans 8:9 and 1 Corinthians 7:4. Hence, “slave” as the most proper translation for the word “doulos.” Far from being oppressed as the world might think, the slave of Christ is absolutely free. All those who come to the Son of God, Jesus Christ, are completely set free from the power and bondage of sin. Remember the words of Jesus Christ in John 8:6 – “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Every Christian can now say together with Apostle Paul in Romans 8:2 – “Through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.”

Jesus Christ as the Truth, Resurrection, and Life

Today, we know the truth and the truth has set us free (John 8:32). Let’s further support this message by reading from John 11:25 – “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the Resurrection and the Life. The one who believes in me will live, even though the die;‘” Paradoxically, our bondage in Christ is one that gives us the right to become sons and daughters of God Almighty and heirs of His Kingdom (Galatians 4:1-7). As heirs of God’s Kingdom, we’ve been destined to Eternal Life which is His special gift to all who welcome His beloved Son and remain faithful to His teachings. This inheritance is a privilege beyond any earthly treasure we could ever get in touch with. On the other hand, those in bondage or slavery to sin are destined to condemnation in the Lake of Fire for all times.

At this point, one might want to know why many Christians are still living as if they were in bondage? The issue here is that we often rebel against our Master, failing to obey His teachings and rather embracing our old lifestyles. Doing these things is holding on to sins which once bound us to Satan as our master. Due to the fact that our new nature in Christ is still living in the old fleshly nature, we are still likely to be tempted and drawn towards sin. That’s why Apostle Paul tells the Ephesians to “Put off” the old self together with its deceit and corruption in order to “Put On” the new self with its righteousness through Christ. In simple terms, we’ve been called to put off lying and put on truthfulness. In addition, we’ve been called to put of stealing and put on work and usefulness.

Our Crucifixion with Christ

Through Jesus Christ on the Cross, we’ve all been set free from the bondage of sin. It is unfortunate that we often put the chains back on because part of us loves the old life. It is important to understand here that we’ve been crucified with Jesus Christ (Galatians 2;20). Furthermore, it is also important to understand that we’ve been born again as new creatures in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17). The Christian faith is one of death to self and rising to “walk in the newness of life in Christ.” This new life that we are talking about is highly characterized by thoughts of the one who saved us from the power of sin and its wages, death. In addition, it is not about thoughts of our old selves which were fueled by wickedness and evil.

When we are always thinking about ourselves instead of Christ and indulging our flesh into committing those sins which Christ delivered us from, we are really carrying around a corpse that is full of rottenness and death. However, Christ did not leave us alone but allowed a companion in the person of the Holy Spirit. Today, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can experience a renewal of mind which buries the wicked, evil, and sinful desires of the old self. The Holy Spirit is our main source of strength in doing what God wants. That’s why Christ said that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truths. As revealed by the Bible Verses About Strength, the Holy Spirit provides us with the necessary strength to overcome the desire to return to the old life of sin.

4 Things the Bible says about Freedom

1. For thousands of years people have been searching for it

The quest for genuine freedom is a theme which we can easily find throughout the Bible from the Book of Genesis to Revelation. Not very long after God’s creation, humanity gave up freedom thereby choosing to rebel against God. This is what we refer to in theology as the “Fall of Man.” After the fall of man, the perfect freedom that God installed in the Garden of Eden was gone thereby living long-term spiritual and physical consequences. In the Old Testament, we are told how God’s people lose their freedom time and again as different empires overtook them (Exodus). In most cases, the lose of physical freedom was linked to the people’s disobedience and rebellion especially when they turned to false gods. It was due to the fall of man that God promised to send His beloved Son to restore True Freedom.

2. Jesus Christ is God’s solution to restore true freedom

When Christ began His earthly ministry, God was before Him and manifested in many ways and through many people as an indication that Christ was the promised Son who was to restore the freedom which was lost due to the fall of man or humanity. Jesus Christ Himself announced that He was the one whom God’s people had been waiting for many years. He did this by reading a Scripture from Prophet Isaiah and then telling the people that He is the accomplishment of the prophecy.

Let’s support our message by reading from Luke 4:17-21 – “And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,    because he has anointed me    to proclaim good news to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives    and recovering of sight to the blind,    to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down, And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing’

3. Jesus Christ came to free us from Sin, Death, and anything that enslaves us

The Christian faith is based on the core teaching that out of an immeasurable, unfailing, and unconditional love, God send His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to preach the message of repentance from sin that leads to eternal life. Let’s support this message by reading from John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Christ came with the Good News of God. This good news holds that through faith in Christ or by believing in Christ, we are freed from death which is the punishment we all deserve for having sinned against God. Believing has to do with welcoming and obeying the Key teachings of Jesus Christ. We can not talk of having welcomed Christ without loving Him. And loving Him is materialized through our obedience to His teachings.

4. God has given us the freedom to choose our own path

This point has been written to call our attention to the fact that God created human beings and not robots. He allows each and everyone the possibility to choose from Eternal Life in His Kingdom or Eternal Condemnation in the Lake of Fire. Let’s support this message by reading from Sirach 15:16-18 – “He has placed before you fire and water:    stretch out your hand for whichever you wish. Before a man[a] are life and death,    and whichever he chooses will be given to him. For great is the wisdom of the Lord;    he is mighty in power and sees everything;
