Discover the Bible Verses About ADHD And ADD. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) are largely debated biological disorders. Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a term used to describe individuals wrestling with inattention while Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a term used to describe individuals wrestling with inattention as well as hyperactivity and impulsivity.
The inattention referred to in ADD is described as possessing some or all of these characteristics: making careless mistakes in schoolwork or other work-related activities; having difficulties following through on instructions and frequently failing to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace; facing difficulties organizing tasks and activities; doesn’t seem to listen when spoken to directly; faces difficulties sustaining attention in tasks or play-related activities; dislikes, avoids, or reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort; easily loses things needed for the accomplishment of tasks; easily forgets in daily tasks, and/or is easily distracted by extraneous stimuli.
In the case of ADHD, the individual concerned may have some of the above-mentioned traits coupled with some of the following: talks excessively; has difficulty awaiting his or her turn; leaves the seat in situations in which remaining seated is expected; fidgets with hands or feet or squirms while sitting; has difficulty engaging in leisure activities quietly; runs about or climbs excessively when such behavior is inappropriate; is “on the go” or acts as if “driven by a motor”; interrupts or intrudes on others; and/or blurts out answers before questions have been completed. Although some people believe the disorders to be misdiagnosed or over-diagnosed, they are real, medical conditions that persist throughout a person’s lifetime. Although most cases of ADHD and ADD are diagnosed in childhood, there are times a person does not receive such a diagnosis until adulthood.
Bible Verses About ADHD And ADD
ADHD and ADD being biological disorders are to be viewed by Christians the way we view any medical condition – as being an unfortunate consequence of sin’s entry into the world at The Fall Of Man. According to the Biblical account of Adam and Eve, before they decided to rebel against the Lord God by consuming the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, there existed no disorder, illness, disease, or deformity. In fact, all of the things that cause sorrow, pain, and difficulty or lead to death are part of the curse that was brought unto humanity by sin. The Bible teaches us that when the Lord God renews Heaven and Earth, “No longer will there be anything accursed” (Revelation 22:3).
Likewise, Revelation 21:4 says, “He [God] will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
The Lord God’s desire was not for His people to live with diseases or disorders, and He will one day make His people completely whole and healed. For the moment, we can mourn for the fallen state in which we find ourselves, just like Jesus Christ mourned the death of Lazarus even while knowing clearly that He was about to raise Him from death (John 11:33–35). In the face of the pain and grief of a disappointing diagnosis, having in mind that the Lord God mourns this suffering with us (Psalm 56:8), we can embrace ways of ameliorating our situation. Medical and non-medical interventions can be embraced as effective ways of treating symptoms of ADHD and ADD. Also, tactics like regular exercise, dietary changes, quality sleep, talk and/or behavioral therapy, and an unchanging routine can help manage symptoms.
How to handle ADHD and ADD
For ADHD and ADD, tricks like setting timers and alarms, using sticky note reminders, and eliminating audio/visual distractions can go a long way to help. And, of course, medication can be some other very effective and at times necessary way to treat symptoms of ADHD and ADD. At times, modifying expectations in the workplace or classroom is required to permeate a person with ADHD or ADD to succeed. As Christians, it is important for us to view and approach ADHD or ADD with compassion and mercy. Needless to say, ADHD and ADD should never be used as an excuse to promote or allow sinful attitudes or behavior like fits of anger, addiction, laziness, selfishness, or sexual immorality (Galatians 5:19–21). In fact, everyone has a sinful nature and no life circumstance or biological disorder is an excuse for anyone to indulge that nature.
Importantly, those in a role of authority over a person with ADHD or ADD should earnestly pray for discernment to determine whether that person’s behavior happens to be a result of sin or it is an involuntary outplay of a poorly controlled biological disorder. Notice that when ADHD or ADD is well-controlled, and its symptoms are effectively managed, those with the disorder can lead successful lives that bring glory and honor to the Lord God Almighty. Everyone in the body of Christ, irrespective of the obstacles that their life circumstances may present, can yield to the flow and work of the Holy Spirit which will bring them to spiritual maturity, bearing the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23). Likewise, it’s important to consider the unique strengths and gifts those with ADHD or ADD have to offer in service of the body of Christ our Lord and Savior.
Unique Strengths and Gifts displayed by those with ADHD and ADD
Notice that many people with ADHD or ADD tend to be outside-the-box thinkers with innovative and creative solutions. They make great musicians, artists, inventors, and designers. Likewise, people with hyperactivity have ample energy that can be used to serve others. They make great paramedics, firefighters, and police officers. Also, people with impulsivity carry a burden to get things done and try new things. Such people make great soldiers, public relations professionals, and salespeople. In fact, every believer, even those with diseases or biological disorders, has an important role to play in the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:11–26). Hebrews 10:24 encourages us as Christians to “stir up one another to love and good works.” A good understanding of the ways ADHD and ADD can be effectively managed helps us equip those with the biological disorder to follow godly standards.
In addition, a good knowledge of our own reliance on God’s mercy for our sinful tendencies equips us with grace for those suffering from ADHD and ADD. Although ADHD and ADD are not biological disorders that the Lord God desired for His people, they remain an opportunity for Him to be glorified. Remember that the Lord God is glorified when Christians act with encouragement and compassion towards those with the disorder. Likewise, the Lord God is glorified when those with this biological disorder allow Him to overcome the sinful nature through the powerful work of the Holy Spirit and make use of the strengths of those with ADHD and ADD to benefit His Church as well as the entire world.
Biblical facts about Attentiveness
Notice that the Lord God recognizes the fact that some tasks are hard, yet He encourages us to be faithful in accomplishing them (Proverbs 6:6–8; Colossians 3:23). Although there are moments in which staying focused is really difficult, there are rewards for staying focus (Proverbs 12:11). Although there are times that it’s difficult to develop priorities, there are rewards for making good choices in life (Proverbs 24:27). Despite the fact that there are moments in which it’s difficult to listen to instructions, there are good rewards for listening to those who are teaching (Proverbs 7:24; James 1:19). At times, it’s hard to remember things and that’s why the Lord God tells us to develop reminders (Proverbs 6:20–21; Deuteronomy 6:6-8; 2 Peter 1:12–15).
Biblical facts about Self-control
Self-control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:23), and that which we add to our faith in God (2 Peter 1:6). As Christians, we are to discipline ourselves in order not to be disqualified (1 Corinthians 9:27). Scripture encourages us to control the use of our words (Proverbs 10:19; Matthew 12:36). Controlling our lives begins with controlling our minds (Proverbs 25:28; Philippians 4:8).
Biblical facts about Impulsivity
Take note that being hasty comes with a lot of consequences (Proverbs 21:5). Listening before speaking carries a lot of value (James 1:19). It is advisable and wise to listen clearly to a matter before answering (Proverbs 18:13). Exercising patience and longsuffering (holding back passion) are good signs of spiritual maturity (Galatians 5:22; James 1:2–4).
Understanding and Assisting those with ADHD and ADD
It is rather unfortunate that we often focus on the negative behavior without realizing that there are positive traits behind those behaviors. Notice that the daydreamer or forgetful person tends to be quite imaginative. The hyperactive person tends to have ample energy that can be used to help others. The impulsive person tends to carry a burden to get things quickly done. And as such, these individuals can contribute in one way or the other to the body of Christ as well as to society. Attentiveness, self-control, and a lack of impulsivity are regarded as signs of maturity and wisdom. The Bible instructs us to motivate and encourage one another (Hebrews 10:24–25). With this in mind, instead of quickly passing judgment or condemning others for their behaviors, we should take active roles in encouraging them to change.
That are many ways that we can help or assist individuals suffering from ADHD and ADD. We can help them to develop a servant’s heart and to renew their minds as to what the Lord God teaches about their behaviors. We can as well help by identifying the positive traits/qualities in them, appreciating and encouraging them to develop and make use of these qualities in serving the body of Christ as well as positively contributing in one way or the other to society. Importantly, those suffering from these biological disorders should seek the advice of a medical professional who is experienced in managing ADHD and ADD. Likewise, pastors, parents, and all those who work with children and adults with ADHD and ADD should make use of the Word of God, which is highly profitable for teaching, correcting, reproving, and instructing (2 Timothy 3:16).

Romans 7:15-25 – “For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh.
