Bible Verses About Covenant

The Bible Verses About Covenant will guide you into clearly understanding how God has been operating with mankind since the creation of the World. Although infrequently used in conversations, the word “Covenant” is quite common in social (marriage), legal, theological, and religious books. The term “Covenant” is of Latin origin (con venire). It literally means “coming together“. It has to do with two or more parties coming together to make a contract, take responsibilities, privileges, stipulations, and agreeing on promises. Due to the fact that this term is used variously in Biblical context, religious and theological cycles have had difficulties to reach a meeting point or agreement on what should be understood by it. Up to some extent, we can say that the use of the word is indefinite.

You might be wondering why we say that the word “Covenant” is indefinite. In political situations, it can be translated treaty while in a social setting, it can be translated as a lifelong friendship agreement in as much as it can be referred to as marriage. The Biblical words that are often translated as “Covenant” are berit [tyir.B] in the Old Testament where it appears about 280 times and diatheke [diaqhvkh] in the New Testament where it appears about 33 times. For centuries now, the origin of the Old Testament word has been a subject of debate. While some say that it comes from the custom of eating together (Genesis 26:3), others have it from the idea of cutting animals as (Genesis 15:18). However, the preferred meaning of this Old Testament word is “Bond.” Hence, a covenant refers to two or more parties bound together.

What the scriptures say about covenant?

Apart from covenant in the New Testament as translation for the Greek word diatheke [diaqhvkh], testament and testimony are also used. Note that this Greek word basically means to order or dispose for oneself or another. However, the generally accepted idea for binding or establishing a bond between two parties is supported by the use of the Hebrew word berit [tyir.B]. It is worth noting that there are two main covenants high-lightened by the Holy Scriptures; Old Covenant and New Covenant.

The difference between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant (Old Covenant Vs New Covenant)

Mos people know that the Bible is divided into the Old Testament and New Testament, but few know that the word “Testament” also means “Covenant,” a contract or engagement between two or more parties. The Old Testament was a foundation of what was to come, the New Testament. From the first book of the Old Testament to the last, almost all Prophets and Messengers from God are pointing to a Messiah (Savior). The New Testament on its part describe the fulfillment of God’s promise by Jesus Christ. In simple terms, it unfolds the teachings, life, actions, and thoughts of the Messiah (Savior).

Old Covenant: Foundation for the New Testament

Truth be told, the Old Covenant was a foundation for the New Covenant. This covenant was established within the people of Israel after God freed them from slavery in Egypt. The people were led out of Egypt by Moses where they were held in captivity by Pharaoh. Moses served as a mediator in establishing the Old Covenant between God and the people of Israel at Mount Sinai. It was then that God promised to be their God and have them as His chosen people. God issued the ten commandments and the laws in the book of Leviticus to be obeyed by the Hebrews. He pledged that if they complied, He would offer them prosperity and protection in the promised land. All together, there were 613 laws which covered every aspect of human behavior.

New Covenant: Between God and Christians

The system of animal sacrifice for the redemption of sins in the Old Covenant lasted for hundreds of years. However, it was only temporal. Out of an Immeasurable, unconditional, and faithful Love, God the Father Almighty sent His only and beloved Son, Jesus Christ, into the world as the true lamb that takes away the sins of the faithful. Although having no sin of His own, He came into the world and was persecuted and nailed to the cross where He shed the blood that washes the sins of all those who come to Him. Unlike the animal sacrifice in the Old Covenant, Christ is the perfect sacrifice before God that takes away the sins of the faithful. Today, you can have your sins forgiven by God as you welcome this sacrifice through a Sincere Repentance and obedience to the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ.

What you must know about the Old Covenant and the New Covenant – Matthew 5:17

Matthew 5:17-19 – “Do not think that I have come to do away with the Law of Moses and the teachings of the Prophets. I have not come to do away with them, but to make their teachings come true. Remember that as long as heaven and earth last, not the least point nor the smallest detail of the Law will be done away with – not until the end of all things. So then, whoever disobeys even the least important of the commandments and teaches others to do same, will be least in the Kingdom of Heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys the Law and teaches others to do same, will be great in the Kingdom of Heaven.” This scripture from Christ proofs wrong the unsound doctrine that we have nothing to do with the law. As followers of Christ, we must obey both the Old Testament and New Covenant.
