Bible Verses About Speaking

There are many Bible Verses About Speaking worth knowing. As followers of Jesus Christ, we’ve been called to use the power of our tongues for good. Psalms 19:14 says, “May my words and my thoughts be acceptable to you, O LORD, my refuge and my strength!” By following the example of Jesus Christ, we are able to choose when to speak, what to speak, and how to speak. As His followers, we must be gracious in speech. In this light, we’ll be able to use the right words in building and not destroying. Till date, the incident that took place in early October 1871 is still described as the most deadly forest fire in U.S. history. It was so intense that it killed over 1,200 people and consumed about 2 billion trees. Who knows? Perhaps, the inferno may have been started by mere sparks from passing trains.

James 3:5-9 says, “So it is with the tongue: small as it is, it can boast about great things. Just think how large a forest can be set on fire by a tiny flame! And the tongue is like a fire. It is a world of wrong, occupying its place in our bodies and spreading evil through our whole being. It sets on fire the entire course of our existence with the fire that comes to it from hell itself. Human beings can tame and have tamed all other creatures – wild animals and birds, reptiles and fish. But no one has ever been able to tame the tongue. It is evil and uncontrollable, full of deadly poison. We use it to give thanks to our Lord and Father and also to curse other people, who are created in the likeness of God.

Bible Verses About Speaking

James 3:10-12 says, “Words of thanksgiving and cursing pour out from the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, this should not happen! No spring of water pours out sweet water and bitter water from the same opening. A fig tree, my brothers and sisters, cannot bear olives; a grapevine cannot bear figs, nor can a salty spring produce sweet water.” This is a call for us to use the words from our mouth to build up, and not tear down. That is, we ought to reflect the nature of God in our thoughts, words, and actions. Our thoughts, words, and actions should reflect God’s sovereign rule over our lives. And as we know, God is love. Hence, all our thoughts, words. and actions should be done out of love. For the Scriptures say that anyone who does not love does not know God.

What does the Scriptures say about Speaking?

Although speech is part of our daily lives, we must speak all the time. In fact the Scriptures clearly point to a time for maintaining silence and the time for talk (Ecclesiastes 3:7). It is important to understand that maintaining silence when others are speaking can be a great mark of respect (Job 6:24). In addition, the ability to control our tongues and maintain them quiet about a confidential matter gives evidence of discretion, maturity, and discernment (Proverbs 20:19). The Scriptures tell us that restraining our tongues when we are provoked is the course of wisdom (Psalm 4:4). It is important to understand that the wise maintains silence till the right time to speak. Jesus Himself knew when it was the right time to speak and when it was the right time to maintain silence (John 18:33-37; 19:8-11).

Jesus once said to His disciples, “I have much more to tell you, but now it would be too much for you to bear. When, however the Spirit comes, who reveals the truth about God, He will lead you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own authority, but He will speak of what He hears, and will tell you of things to come” (John 16:12-13). Brethren, let no one deceive you for there definitely are occasions when we need to discern the right time to speak. Remember the saying that “A wise man knows when to speak and when to maintain silence.” Whether you want to speak or react to an offense, take time to put things in order before stepping into action. If you must speak or react, it won’t be wise to do so when you are upset.

Facts about Speaking

We must live with the consequences of what we say. What we speak out has the ability to preserve life or destroy it (Proverbs 18:21). That is why it is important to be diligent in your speech. Words have the power to hurt as well as to heal (Proverbs 12:18). It is only under Satan’s control that people find pleasure in using words to inflict pain and suffering to others. Psalms 64:3 says, “They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like arrows.” A Christian must avoid these evil practices. Sarcasm is one example of “cruel words” which points to stinging remarks that are intended to belittle or rebuke others. Although sarcasm is often meant to be humorous, it can quickly deteriorate into disrespectful, insulting speech. Cruel sarcasm is a form of abusive speech that we should avoid.
