Bible Verses About Selfishness

There are many Bible Verses About Selfishness worth knowing by all followers of Christ. Behold, the Bible actually says much about selfishness. Having said this, one might ask, “what is selfishness?” In simple terms, selfishness is that attitude of being concerned with one’s own interests at all cost above the interests of others. Whatever the case, it is important to understand here that the Bible commands us to  “do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4). From this Scripture, we see that Apostle Paul compares selfishness to “empty conceit,” a term that we can as well translate as “arrogance” or “vanity.” Behold, it is “more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).

Selfishness can as well be regarded as an overly high opinion of one’s self. That is why we can say without doubt that selfishness is akin to narcissism (self-love, vanity, or egotism). We can as well say that selfishness or empty-conceit is that very practice of building up oneself while tearing down another person. According to Galatians 5:20, selfishness is one of the “works of the flesh.” In James 3:16, we are told that selfishness leads to “disorder and every evil practice.” Remember that it was selfishness that caused the children of Israel to “willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved” (Psalm 78:18). In addition, selfishness caused a young rich man to turn his back on Jesus Christ (Matthew 19:21-22). We should abandon selfishness and be more focus on building our “treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19-21).

Bible Verses About Selfishness

What does the Scripture say about Selfishness?

There is much that the Scriptures say about selfishness. The Scripture tells us that selfishness can make us wander far away from God’s presence. A selfish attitude stands as a blockage to our spiritual growth and walk with Jesus Christ (Matthew 19:21-22). Such prevents us from obtaining God’s special gift of Eternal Life through Christ that comes from genuinely Believing, Sincerely Repenting, and obeying His Commands. In addition, selfishness hinders prayer (James 4:3), ruins friendship (Proverbs 18:1), and stands as a product of Earthly wisdom (James 3:13-14). As followers of Christ, we should choose not to embrace a selfish attitude but to focus on “being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose” (Philippians 2:2). Note that “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

In order to overcome selfishness, we need to be genuinely humble. That is, fighting all traces of Pride in our lives. It is time for us to stop thinking that we are better than others. Before God, we are all His creatures. Note that genuine humility restores, and boost the growth of relationships. When we talk about being humble here, we mean having a true perspective about ourselves in relation to God. Romans 12:3 says, “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.” A prayerful life and the love for God’s word are necessary to overcome a selfish attitude. Psalm 119:36 says, “Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain.” Love does cover a multitude of sin, including selfishness (Romans 12:10).
