Discover Bible Verses About Being Capable. Capability/Ability means the various uses of resources, material, mental, and spiritual. Looking at ability from the angle of wealth, we can support with “gave after their ability” (Ezra 2:69). Looking at ability from the angle of mental endowment, we can support with “ability to stand in the king’s palace” (Daniel 1:4). If we are looking at ability from the angle of talents and character, we can back up with “several abilities” (Matthew 25:15). Also, if we decide to look at ability from an angle of spiritual strength, we can point to “minister, as of the ability which God giveth” (1 Peter 4:11). Therefore, we can look at capability/ability as either possession, native capacities, talents, or gifts of the Holy Spirit.

God is omnipotent, meaning that He possesses infinite, complete, and perfect power. That is why we can say without a doubt that unlike humans, God’s abilities are limitless. God can do anything that He wants to do, absolutely anything. This is a claim that none of us can make. Human capabilities are limited but God is able to do everything that He wills. We often make use of the term power to refer to God’s authority or His prerogative to do anything that He wants. In more accurate terms, we’ll talk of His sovereignty. Power refers to His ability to perform, His strength to act, and that’s the kind of power in God’s Omnipotence. In fact, God Almighty is able to do anything that He wants to do.

Bible Verses About Being Capable

One of God’s names clearly tells us that He is able to do whatever He pleases, a name He first revealed to Abraham, the father of faith. God had promised to make Abraham the father of a great nation, and naturally, Abraham needed a son for that promise to come true, Abraham, in his human mind, thought that Hagar’s child, Ishmael, was to be that son, but God told him that Sarah, his wife, would bear a son named Isaac through whom the promise would be fulfilled. Upon hearing this, everything seemed preposterous before Abraham. Behold, he was ninety-nine years old and Sarah was ninety, and humanly speaking it was not possible for them to have a child at that age.

The Bible makes us understand that God helped Abraham and Sarah to believe that He could give them a son despite their advanced ages by the way He introduced Himself that day: “Now when Abram was ninety nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless’” (Genesis 17:1). El Shaddai is God Almighty, the God who can do anything that He wants to do, even rejuvenate dead wombs and give babies to couples in their nineties! Behold, He is all-powerful, almighty, and sovereign over the Earth and the Heavens. This name is used forty-seven more times in the Old Testament of the Bible and never of anyone but God. However, it has a New Testament equivalent, used ten times, which literally means “to hold all things in one’s power.” 

What The Scriptures Say About Ability

The Scriptures are punctuated with references to God’s Omnipotence from the beginning to the end. Behold, He is the Lord strong and almighty (Psalm 24:8). All power in Heaven and on Earth belongs to Him (Psalm 62:11). Let’s further support this point by reading from Psalm 147:5 – “Great is our Lord, and abundant in strength.” He wants us to know Him as the God who is able to do anything. It is really amazing to watch Biblical characters discover Him in that light. Abraham was one of the first persons to discover God’s ability to do all things. Sometime after that initial revelation of Himself as the Almighty, God again promised Abraham a son, this time in Sarah’s hearing, and she laughed to herself (Genesis 18:12).

“Why did Sarah laugh?” The Lord God asked. Then He added, “Is anything too difficult for the LORD?” (Genesis 18:14). Upon learning the answer to this question, Abraham and Sarah believed that God would keep His Word. And they finally did, “being fully assured that what He had promised, He was able also to perform” (Romans 4:21). That is, both Abraham and Sarah grasped the truth of God’s Omnipotence. Most of us have had disillusioning experiences with people who have promised more than they have been able to deliver, and we have the tendency to transfer our skepticism to God Almighty. At times, we fill our minds with unnecessary and misleading questions like does He really care? Does He really have the power to bring good out of adversity? Is He really in control? As Christians, we should just believe as Abraham and Sarah did and later thanked God.

Great Things That God Can Do For Us If We Believe

As Christians through Christ our Lord and Savior, we can know the Omnipotent God intimately and experientially by thinking and believing what He said He will do. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Likewise, God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He did it in the past, He is still doing it these days, and He will certainly do it in times to come. All we need to do is to put our trust in Him. The New Testament word “to be able” means essentially “to have power” (dunamai the verb form of that familiar Greek noun, dunamis). Each time that we read in the Bible that God is able to do something, it means that He has the power to do it. It is that simple. This is a concept related to His Omnipotence. Below are some things that God can do:

1) God is able to save us completely – Hebrews 7:25

Hebrews 7:25 says, “Hence, also, He is able to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” Here, the writer to the Hebrews is assuring us that God is able to perfectly save us for all time and eternity through Christ, Savior of the world. Once we have sincerely repented, welcomed Christ in our lives, and been born again, we never need to fear for our eternal destiny. Behold, our Omnipotent God has the power to keep us. Apostle Peter understood this and put it in the very words. He said we are “kept by the power of God” (1 Peter 1:5). We should always remember that it is not our ability but God’s, it is not our strength but God’s, and it is not our might but God’s.

2) God is able to keep us from sin – Jude 24

Jude 24 says, “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy.” This great benediction assures us that God has the power and is able to keep us from falling into sin. Hebrews 2:18 tells us how He does it: “For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.” We can say without a doubt that our Omnipotent Savior has conquered temptation Himself, and now He is close to us for us to lean when we are tempted. By learning to lay hold of His power, we are able to conquer those stubborn sins in our lives.

3) God is able to heal our diseases – Isaiah 53:5

Isaiah 53:5 says, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” God is aware of our diseases and He is able to heal and make us whole if we humbly turn to Him. Jesus Christ taught this very lesson to two blind men right after He emerged from the house where He had raised Jairus’s daughter from the dead, the supreme demonstration of His power. The Bible tells us that the two blind men cried out “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” (Matthew 9:27). Upon hearing this, Jesus turned and asked, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” (Matthew 9:28). When they answered, “Yes, Lord,” Jesus Christ touched their eyes and restored their sight.

Behold, these two blind men started seeing and rejoicing. Jesus Christ may be asking you the same question: “Do you believe I have the power to heal you?” He does not always heal, obviously because He knows that sickness is sometimes the best way to accomplish His perfect purpose in our lives. But He is able and wants us to believe that He can completely heal us and make us whole. Believing that Jesus can restore our health is the very first step to good health. When we are sick and deprived of strength, let’s look up to God because He is able to heal us and bless us with good health.

4) God is able to supply our needs – 2 Corinthians 9:8

2 Corinthians 9:8 says, “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.” This is a Biblical promise that was addressed to faithful and cheerful givers. Such people can count on God to take care of everything that they need, in every circumstance of life. It is without a doubt that only an Omnipotent God could make such a promise. It is worth pointing out here that it is the love that accompanies our sacrifices that makes them acceptable unto the Lord God. Remember the Scripture that says no one can please God without love. Thus, when giving, always do so in love.

5) God is able to deliver us from death – Daniel 3:17

Daniel 3:17 says,  “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire.” Daniel’s three friends taught and demonstrated this lesson when they were standing beside the door of a blazing fiery furnace heated seven times hotter than normal. Putting their trust in God, they courageously declared to Nebuchadnezzar,  “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire.” However, God does not always deliver us from death. Many have laid down their lives for their faith throughout the centuries. However, God is able to deliver us if He so desires. Jesus knew this and that’s why “He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death” (Hebrews 5:7). 

As Jesus prayed in the garden to His Father, He said, “All things are possible for Thee; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what Thou wilt” (Mark 14:36). While all things are possible, Jesus submitted to His Father’s will and trusted Him to do what was best. This is exactly what is expected from us as Christians. We should always put God’s will first and trust Him for the best. We are invincible and immortal until God’s time to take us home. God is able to deliver us from any danger. After Daniel had spent an entire night in a den of lions, the Bible tells us that King Darius hurried to the den in the morning and called out to him, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you constantly serve, been able to deliver you from the lions?” (Daniel 6:20).

1) God is able to save us completely – Hebrews 7:25

Hebrews 7:25 says, “Hence, also, He is able to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” Here, the writer to the Hebrews is assuring us that God is able to perfectly save us for all time and eternity through Christ, Savior of the world. Once we have sincerely repented, welcomed Christ in our lives, and been born again, we never need to fear for our eternal destiny. Behold, our Omnipotent God has the power to keep us. Apostle Peter understood this and put it in the very words. He said we are “kept by the power of God” (1 Peter 1:5). We should always remember that it is not our ability but God’s, it is not our strength but God’s, and it is not our might but God’s.

2) God is able to keep us from sin – Jude 24

Jude 24 says, “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy.” This great benediction assures us that God has the power and is able to keep us from falling into sin. Hebrews 2:18 tells us how He does it: “For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.” We can say without a doubt that our Omnipotent Savior has conquered temptation Himself, and now He is close to us for us to lean when we are tempted. By learning to lay hold of His power, we are able to conquer those stubborn sins in our lives.

3) God is able to heal our diseases – Isaiah 53:5

Isaiah 53:5 says, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” God is aware of our diseases and He is able to heal and make us whole if we humbly turn to Him. Jesus Christ taught this very lesson to two blind men right after He emerged from the house where He had raised Jairus’s daughter from the dead, the supreme demonstration of His power. The Bible tells us that the two blind men cried out “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” (Matthew 9:27). Upon hearing this, Jesus turned and asked, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” (Matthew 9:28). When they answered, “Yes, Lord,” Jesus Christ touched their eyes and restored their sight.

Behold, these two blind men started seeing and rejoicing. Jesus Christ may be asking you the same question: “Do you believe I have the power to heal you?” He does not always heal, obviously because He knows that sickness is sometimes the best way to accomplish His perfect purpose in our lives. But He is able and wants us to believe that He can completely heal us and make us whole. Believing that Jesus can restore our health is the very first step to good health. When we are sick and deprived of strength, let’s look up to God because He is able to heal us and bless us with good health.

4) God is able to supply our needs – 2 Corinthians 9:8

2 Corinthians 9:8 says, “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.” This is a Biblical promise that was addressed to faithful and cheerful givers. Such people can count on God to take care of everything that they need, in every circumstance of life. It is without a doubt that only an Omnipotent God could make such a promise. It is worth pointing out here that it is the love that accompanies our sacrifices that makes them acceptable unto the Lord God. Remember the Scripture that says no one can please God without love. Thus, when giving, always do so in love.

5) God is able to deliver us from death – Daniel 3:17

Daniel 3:17 says,  “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire.” Daniel’s three friends taught and demonstrated this lesson when they were standing beside the door of a blazing fiery furnace heated seven times hotter than normal. Putting their trust in God, they courageously declared to Nebuchadnezzar,  “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire.” However, God does not always deliver us from death. Many have laid down their lives for their faith throughout the centuries. However, God is able to deliver us if He so desires. Jesus knew this and that’s why “He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death” (Hebrews 5:7). 

As Jesus prayed in the garden to His Father, He said, “All things are possible for Thee; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what Thou wilt” (Mark 14:36). While all things are possible, Jesus submitted to His Father’s will and trusted Him to do what was best. This is exactly what is expected from us as Christians. We should always put God’s will first and trust Him for the best. We are invincible and immortal until God’s time to take us home. God is able to deliver us from any danger. After Daniel had spent an entire night in a den of lions, the Bible tells us that King Darius hurried to the den in the morning and called out to him, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you constantly serve, been able to deliver you from the lions?” (Daniel 6:20).

Looking at ability from the angle of mental endowment, we can support with “ability to stand in the king’s palace” (Daniel 1:4). We often make use of the term power to refer to God’s authority or His prerogative to do anything that He wants. In more accurate terms, we’ll talk of His sovereignty. Power refers to His ability to perform, His strength to act, and that’s the kind of power in God’s Omnipotence. In fact, God Almighty is able to do anything that He wants to do.

Bible Verses About Ability

One of God’s names clearly tells us that He is able to do whatever He pleases, a name He first revealed to Abraham, the father of faith. God had promised to make Abraham the father of a great nation, and naturally, Abraham needed a son for that promise to come true, Abraham, in his human mind, thought that Hagar’s child, Ishmael, was to be that son, but God told him that Sarah, his wife, would bear a son named Isaac through whom the promise would be fulfilled. Upon hearing this, everything seemed preposterous before Abraham. Behold, he was ninety-nine years old and Sarah was ninety, and humanly speaking it was not possible for them to have a child at that age.

The Bible makes us understand that God helped Abraham and Sarah to believe that He could give them a son despite their advanced ages by the way He introduced Himself that day: “Now when Abram was ninety nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless’” (Genesis 17:1). El Shaddai is God Almighty, the God who can do anything that He wants to do, even rejuvenate dead wombs and give babies to couples in their nineties! Behold, He is all-powerful, almighty, and sovereign over the Earth and the Heavens. This name is used forty-seven more times in the Old Testament of the Bible and never of anyone but God. However, it has a New Testament equivalent, used ten times, which literally means “to hold all things in one’s power.” 

What The Scriptures Say About Ability

The Scriptures are punctuated with references to God’s Omnipotence from the beginning to the end. Behold, He is the Lord strong and almighty (Psalm 24:8). All power in Heaven and on Earth belongs to Him (Psalm 62:11). Let’s further support this point by reading from Psalm 147:5 – “Great is our Lord, and abundant in strength.” He wants us to know Him as the God who is able to do anything. It is really amazing to watch Biblical characters discover Him in that light. Abraham was one of the first persons to discover God’s ability to do all things. Sometime after that initial revelation of Himself as the Almighty, God again promised Abraham a son, this time in Sarah’s hearing, and she laughed to herself (Genesis 18:12).

“Why did Sarah laugh?” The Lord God asked. Then He added, “Is anything too difficult for the LORD?” (Genesis 18:14). Upon learning the answer to this question, Abraham and Sarah believed that God would keep His Word. And they finally did, “being fully assured that what He had promised, He was able also to perform” (Romans 4:21). That is, both Abraham and Sarah grasped the truth of God’s Omnipotence. Most of us have had disillusioning experiences with people who have promised more than they have been able to deliver, and we have the tendency to transfer our skepticism to God Almighty. At times, we fill our minds with unnecessary and misleading questions like does He really care? Does He really have the power to bring good out of adversity? Is He really in control? As Christians, we should just believe as Abraham and Sarah did and later thanked God.

Great Things That God Can Do For Us If We Believe

As Christians through Christ our Lord and Savior, we can know the Omnipotent God intimately and experientially by thinking and believing what He said He will do. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Likewise, God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He did it in the past, He is still doing it these days, and He will certainly do it in times to come. All we need to do is to put our trust in Him. The New Testament word “to be able” means essentially “to have power” (dunamai the verb form of that familiar Greek noun, dunamis). Each time that we read in the Bible that God is able to do something, it means that He has the power to do it. It is that simple. This is a concept related to His Omnipotence. Below are some things that God can do:

Discover the Bible Verses About Abijah. Abijah, also spelled Abia, Hebrew Abiyyah, or Abiyyahu meaning “Yahweh Is My Father,” any of nine different persons mentioned in the Bible, of whom the most prominent are the following:

  1. The son and successor of Rehoboam, king of Judah (II Chronicles 12:16, 13), who reigned only about three years (913–911 BC) in Judah before death took him.
  2. The second son of Samuel (I Samuel 8:2; I Chronicles 6:28), who, with his brother Joel, served as a judge at Beersheba. The elders of Israel made the pair’s misconduct a pretext for demanding a king (I Samuel 8:4).

The Bible tells us that King Abijah, also called King Abijam or King Abiah, was the son of King Rehoboam and the father of King Asa. We are made to understand that Abijah was a wicked King throughout his reign. 1 Kings 15:3 says, “He committed all the sins his father had done before him; his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his forefather had been.” King Abijah’s attempt to reclaim the northern ten (10) tribes of Israel as part of his Kingdom led to war between him and Jeroboam throughout his reign (1 Kings 15:3). However, King Abijah had some victories over Israel to the north. 2 Chronicles 13 clearly describes a bloody battle in which Abijah and his 400,000 men triumphed over Jeroboam with his 800,000 men.

With confidence, King Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim and spoke out to Jeroboam and Israel about God’s covenant with David, Jeroboam’s rebellion against Rehoboam, and Jeroboam’s ridding Israel of the Levites and allowing anyone to become a priest of false gods. Abijah concluded, “God is with us; he is our leader. His priests with their trumpets will sound the battle cry against you. People of Israel, do not fight against the Lord, the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed” (2 Chronicles 13:12). The Scriptures also tell us how King Abijah took the towns of Ephron, Bethel, Jeshanah, and their surrounding villages from Jeroboam and his men.

Upon witnessing King Abijah’s victories, King Jeroboam’s strength lessened as we can read from 2 Chronicles 13:20–21 – “Jeroboam did not regain power during the time of Abijah. And the Lord struck him down and he died. But Abijah grew in strength. He married fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.” Abijah’s mother was Maakah, and she apparently held a position of authority as queen mother throughout Abijah’s reign and into the reign of her grandson Asa. 2 Chronicles 14:1 tells us that after the death of King Abijah, there was peace between Israel and Judah for 10 years as Abijah’s son, King Asa, instituted wide reforms throughout Judah. One of such reforms was to depose his grandmother Maakah because of her promotion of Asherah worship (1 Kings 15:13). 2 Chronicles 14:2 says, “Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God.”

What The Scriptures Say About Abijah

We are made to understand by the Scriptures that Abijah’s short reign was unfortunately marked by doing evil in the eyes of the Lord God Almighty. Even though God had granted him victory over Israel, Abijah continued the same error as his father, Jeroboam – not fully devoted to God and His Ways (2 Chronicles 12:14; 1 Kings 15:3). His disobedience to God led to his own downfall. However, his successor, King Asa, did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord God thereby obtaining His favor (2 Chronicles 14:2).

Discover the Bible Verses About Abigail and her interesting story. The Old Testament of the Bible tells us that Abigail was the wife of Nabal of Southern Judea, on whose death she became one of the first wives of David (1 Samuel 25), and mother to his son Chileab. Also, the name Abigail was borne by David’s sister (1 Chronicles 2:16), who was the mother of Amasa, commander of the army of Absalom. We can read the story of Abigail, one of David’s wives in 1 Samuel 25. At the beginning of the story, we are made to understand that Abigail is the wife of a wealthy man named Nabal who was an inhabitant of a town referred to as Maon in the wilderness of Paran, an area close to the Sinai Peninsula. Abigail was “an intelligent and beautiful woman” (1 Samuel 25:3).

Abigail saved her husband and his household, prevented David from doing something rash, and secured an unexpected future for herself. Today, the story of Abigail is one of the most interesting stories in the Bible for a good number of reasons. Nabal, her husband, is rather a bizarre character. For no good reason, Nabal refuses David’s request for food and shelter. Despite knowing of David’s benevolence to his shepherds, Nabal wickedly refuses to help David and his men as they tried hard to keep one step ahead of King Saul. Behold, David’s request was reasonable, but Nabal, who is portrayed as “surly and mean” (1 Samuel 25:3), actually spits in the faces of David’s servants refusing to help them.

Bible Verses About Abigail

The Bible tells us that even though Nabal was aware of David’s benevolence to his shepherds, he refused to help David and his servants, saying “Who is this David? Who is this son of Jesse? Many servants are breaking away from their masters these days. Why should I take my bread and water, and the meat I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to men coming from who knows where?” (1 Samuel 25:10-11). However, David did not take this rejection well as he swore to kill every male associated with Nabal’s household (1 Samuel 25:22). The Bible tells us that David has strapped on his sword and was on his way with four hundred armed men (1 Samuel 25:13) when Abigail made him on the road. She offered David gifts of wine, prepared meat, grain, and cakes of figs.

After offering the gifts, Abigail fell down in front of David, pleading with him to show mercy to her husband, Nabal (1 Samuel 25:23). In Abigail’s plea, she shows that she understands Nabal’s character: “Please pay no attention, my lord, to that wicked man Nabal. He is just like his name—his name means Fool, and folly goes with him” (1 Samuel 25:25). In taking up Nabal’s cause and asking David to spare his life, Abigail proofs herself to be a wise, righteous, and caring woman. In boldness, she took up the risk of approaching David, an angry man bent on revenge, and intercedes for her husband, despite his bad behavior. Her request is a picture of Christ, who offered Himself as a Sacrifice to save foolish sinners from the consequences of their own actions and who continues to intercede for us in the presence of God Almighty (Hebrews 7:25).

What The Scriptures Say About Abigail

We are made to understand by the Scriptures that Abigail’s appeasement saves the day. Courageously, she embraces wisdom and intercedes for her husband’s household. David later thanks Abigail for staying his hand and repents of his own foolish and rash decision to slaughter Nabal’s household (1 Samuel 25:32–34). As a matter of fact, David sees Abigail’s coming to him as a blessing from God and he sends her home in peace (1 Samuel 25:35). Meanwhile, Nabal, insensitive to his wrongdoing and the danger that he had dragged his household into, holds a kingly feast for himself and gets drunk (1 Samuel 25:36). Abigail waits until the next morning for her husband to sober up, and then she tells him everything – how David was on his way to destroy him and his household and how she herself interceded before David for mercy.

When Nabal heard all that his wife had done, he fell ill: “His heart failed him and he became like a stone. About ten days later, the LORD struck Nabal and he died” (1 Samuel 25:37–38). When David heard of this, he sent a message to Abigail asking her to become his wife, and Abigail responded affirmatively (1 Samuel 25:40–42). The Scriptures invite us not to seek vengeance for ourselves. Rather, we should “leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord” (Romans 12:19; cf. Deuteronomy 32:35). Behold, this is exactly what happened in Abigail’s story. As David was prevented from taking revenge, the Lord God Almighty took care of the matter in due time.

Interesting Lesson from Nabal and David

Interestingly, Nabal and David can be seen as representative of the two responses men have to Christ. Nabal does not repent nor acknowledge his sin; neither does he thanks Abigail for her willingness to risk her own life on his behalf. On the other hand, David’s heart is tender and repentant, and he calls Abigail blessed for her actions. We see here that David is spared the consequences of the sin he had conceived, but Nabal dies in his sin. In the end, Nabal’s wealth, wife, and his own very life are taken from him. Abigail – a savior full of beauty, courage, wisdom, and discretion – enters a love relationship with David. Worth taking note of in this story is that in Abigail, we have a small picture of the Ultimate Savior, the very Source of Beauty, Courage, and Wisdom, who desires a loving relationship with us for all times.

5 Lessons We Can Learn From The Wisdom And Courage Of Abigail

1) Don’t let fear hold you back – 1 Samuel 25:18

1 Samuel 25:18 says “Abigail lost no time…” No matter how threatening or difficult the situation may seem, God’s power within us is greater than we can ever fully comprehend or see. Behold, the Lord God Almighty is capable of using any of us, even those who feel insignificant or powerless, for His greater good. Abigail showed great wisdom in acting quickly, swiftly, and speaking honorably to David. Without wasting time, she took control of the whole situation that was potentially dangerous for both parties. She did not just sit back putting the whole blame on her husband or remain stuck in fear. Abigail sent food and her servants up ahead. She chose wisely to act alone, without Nabal knowing. She met David with honor and respect for how he had cared for her people. God was with her and she took control thereby saving her husband’s household.

2) Be humble and kind as you seek peace with all – 1 Samuel 25:23-24

1 Samuel 25:23-24 says, “When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her donkey and bowed down before David with her face to the ground. She fell at his feet and said: “My lord, let the blame be on me alone. Please let your servant speak to you, hear what your servant his to say…” This Scripture makes us understand that Abigail had the courage and strength to shoulder the blame for something that she didn’t do. With all respect for David, she begged forgiveness on behalf of her entire household, and the Lord God used that very moment to show David how wrong it will be to take revenge in his own way. Although Abigail had no idea of how David would respond, she was courageous enough to do the right thing regardless of the danger that surrendered her. She acted with much humility and compassion.

3) We should pay attention to our words and actions because they are powerful – 1 Samuel 25:28-29

1 Samuel 25:28-29 says, “Please forgive your servant’s offense, for the Lord will certainly make a lasting dynasty for my master, because he fights the Lord’s battles. Let no wrongdoing be found in you as long as you live. Even though someone is pursuing you to take your life, the life of my master will be bound securely in the bundle of the living by the Lord your God. But the lives of your enemies he will hurl away as from the pocket of a sling.” Abigail was aware of the power of words and actions. Thus, she carefully chose her words and actions to meet up with her heart desire. She understood that the bigger picture of this story was much significant, so she humbly reminded David of how important it was that God was building greatness in his life, that the Lord God Himself was fighting for David.

4) A true warrior is loyal, faithful, and thinks of others before themselves – 1 Samuel 25:30-31

1 Samuel 25:30-31 says, “When the Lord has done for my master every good thing he promised concerning him and has appointed him leader over Israel, my master will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed or of having avenged himself. And when the Lord has brought my master success, remember your servant.” Regardless of the dangers around, Abigail fought to protect her husband and household. Abigail was not only thinking of herself but of all those she loved and cherished. She was loyal and honored God and her family through her actions. She chose to show great respect towards David, reminding him of God’s favor in his life and the blessings that were to come his way. And with wisdom and discernment, she asked David for only one thing at the end of her plea, that when God brought him success, he would remember her.

5) Always remember that God will fight for you and that you are not alone – 1 Samuel 25:32-33

1 Samuel 25:32-33 says, “David said to Abigail, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me. May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed this day and from avenging myself with my own hands.” Behold, God fought for Abigail, just as He still faithfully fights for us today. Remember that God did not leave her alone in the face of the prominent danger but made her find favor in the sight of David. Agape is not a feeling. In simple terms, it is a decision to do good to all – even to those who use you. In the same light, Matthew 5:44-45 reads, “But I say to you, love (agape) your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” With agape, we do not hurt back when others hurt us. Rather, we are kind and even helpful as called for in Matthew 5:38-45. On the other hand, “Phileo” love is the kind of love that we have towards our fellow Christians. Romans 12:10 says, “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love (phileo)…”

Jesus Christ commands us to love and treat our toxic/disloyal friends well. By so doing, we distinguish ourselves as children of the Most High. However, in being good to them, we should avoid putting in our trust and getting too emotionally close as they’ll only end up hurting our feelings. However, for a genuine friendship, Romans 12:10 points to Phileo love, which is a tender, heartfelt love of companionship. This is the brotherly love that siblings in a family have for each other. Human beings were created to be social creatures. This is to say that we are most comfortable when we have family, friends, and acquaintances. Genuine friendship is one of the most important elements in a contented and fulfilled life. Generally, those who have close and reliable friends tend to be happy and well-adjusted.

However, those who call themselves our friends may cause us grief, hardship, and even lead us into sin. While tolerance, love, and forgiveness are important in every friendship relationship, it is also important to know when such relationships reach the boundary. On the positive side, friends can bring comfort and help us when we are in trouble, as when Barzillai the Gileadite consoled David when he was being hunted by Absalom (2 Samuel 17:27–29) or when Jephthah’s daughter’s friends consoled her before her death (Judges 11:37-38). A friend may also rebuke in love, thereby proving more faithful than a hypocritical flatterer (Proverbs 27:6). One of the greatest Biblical examples of friendship is that which existed between David and Johnathan, son of King Saul. The Bible tells us that Johnathan’s loyalty to his friend, David, exceeded that to his own father and his own ambitions (1 Samuel 18:1-4; 20:14-17).

What The Scriptures Say

While the Bible does not encourage us to abandon our friends, it is important to keep watch so that friends won’t lead us astray from the Will of God. That is, friendship can have its negative aspects as well. It is without a doubt that friends can lead us into sin, as when Jonadab persuades Amnon to rape his half-sister, Tamar (2 Samuel 13:1-6). Behold, a friend can lead us astray in regard to our faith, as it was the case in Israel, leading others to worship false gods (Deuteronomy 13:6-11).
