Bible Verses About Sickness

There are many Bible Verses About Sickness worth knowing. In fact, there is much that the Bible says about sickness. Our Heavenly Father cares about our spiritual life and our physical life. He is the one who created the human body. That is why we can say inline with His Word that He is pleased when we enjoy good health and vigor. You can be certain that God is indeed please to see us in good health because the Scriptures say so. However, we are in a world where our bodies endure sickness, pain, and decay. There are even times that we ourselves abuse our own bodies. But in most cases, ailments occur because – well, we don’t always know why, nor God promised that we’ll understand why everything happens in the world He created.

However, healing still occurs – sometimes in dramatic ways, as it was in the time of Jesus Christ and His Apostles. Jesus moved from place to place preaching the God News about God’s Kingdom, Delivering the Captives, and Healing all kinds of bodily afflictions. Likewise did His disciples, whom He promised that they could all do the same works that He did. Brethren, let no one deceive you to think otherwise than sticking to the fact that God is still on the throne. That is, He is still Who He Is, Who He Was, and Who He Will Be. That is, God has not changed and will not change in times to come. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow (Hebrews 13:8). God is still able to do in our days what He did in the past and even in the days to come.

Bible Verses About Sickness

What does the Scripture say about Sickness?

Behold, God still works to heal people in ways that defy medical knowledge. That is why we can say that it is never wrong to pray for healing for ourselves or others. The Scriptures call on us to pray for whatever we need. With this in mind, it makes sense to call on God for help in moments of pain. However, healing does not always occur, even to the most loving, God-centered people. This happens for reasons God alone knows. Whatever the case, the Scriptures promise us that even if we do not get healing in this life, there is something of greater importance awaiting us afterward. Jeremiah 17:14 says, “O LORD, you alone can heal me; you alone can save. My praises are for you alone!” Likewise, Jeremiah 30:17 says, “I will give you back your health and heal your wounds, says the LORD.

Part of Jesus’ Earthly Ministry revolved around healing. The Holy Gospels recount how He moved from place to place healing all kinds of sicknesses. With this in mind, one might ask, “what has become of Jesus’ healing ministry?” Could it be that this healing ministry is no longer operational? The obvious answer is NO. One might ask why? Note that Jesus’ ministry continues till His Second Coming. Healing is part of Jesus’ ministry in as much as preaching and deliverance. Although, He physically departed from the face of the Earth, His ministry did not end. It was for the continuation of His ministry after His Resurrection and Ascension that He trained His Apostles who intern trained others.  Matthew 10:1 says, “Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness.”

More facts about what the Scripture says about Sickness

In Apostle Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, he tells them about spiritual gifts, one of which is healing. It is clear that the gift of healing did not end with Jesus and His immediate Apostles. Apostle Paul operated in this gift. The Scripture even tells us how handkerchiefs that came in contact with him were taken to heal the sick (Acts 19:12). Also, in his first letter to the Corinthians, he encourages them to go after the gifts of the Holy Spirit in order to maintain the body of Christ (Church) alive. These gifts were meant to comfort, encourage, and exhort the people. Hence, we can say that even in the Church far from the physical presence of the immediate Apostles, the gift of healing was in active operation.

What Apostle Paul revealed about the gift of healing

Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:6-10 – “There are different ways God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the work through all of us. God manifests the Spirit through each person for the good of the entire church. To one person the Spirit gives a word of special wisdom; to another he gives the gift of special knowledge. The Spirit gives special faith to another, and to someone else he gives the power to heal the sick. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and to another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to distinguish between spirits. Still another person is given the ability to speak in different kinds of tongues, and another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.”

1 Corinthians 12:11 – “It is the same and only Holy Spirit who distributes these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

1 Corinthians 12:27-28 – “Now all of you together are Christ’s body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it. Here is a list of some of the members that God has placed in the body of Christ:
first are apostles,
second are prophets,
third are teachers,
then those who do miracles,
those who have the gift of healing,
those who can help others,
those who can get others to work together,
those who speak in different kinds of tongues.”

More of Apostle Paul’s teachings

Apostle Paul in one of his letters talked about a “thorn in the flesh,” some kind of physical ailment. Apostle Paul was certainly a man of faith but he was not healed of it. Before you ask why, note that only God knows why. However, Paul accepted his fate and maintained faithfulness to God. Apostle Paul in His own words said: “Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, “My gracious favor is all you need. My power works best in your weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may work through me. Since I know it is all for Christ’s good, I am quite content with my weaknesses and with insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:8-10).

The Scripture also tells us of how Timothy, who was Apostle Paul’s faithful spiritual son regularly suffered from sickness. Again, before you ask why? Note that only God knows why. The Scripture tells us how God healed many through Apostle Paul but did not use him to bring physical healing to Timothy. Only God knows why because the Scripture recounts how Timothy followed Apostle Paul and helped in doing the work of Christ. 1 Timothy 5:23 says, “Do not drink water only, but take a little wine to help your digestion, since you are ill so often.” All we can say here is that God does as He likes. He is not a respecter of men. That’s why we should always pray for His will to be done and not ours.

What you should keep in mind about Sickness

Note that every person who has ever been healed has died. Those who were healed and are still alive will end up dying. Even Jesus’ friend, Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead, died again. God did not make any promise in the Bible that our present bodies, whatever their situation, will stay healthy or last forever. But luckily enough, the Bible promises something much more glorious: a new body which will last forever.

In support of this, 2 Corinthians 5:1-4 says, “We know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down — when we die and leave these bodies — we will have a home in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long for the day when we will put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. For we will not be spirits without bodies, but we will put on new heavenly bodies. Our dying bodies make us groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and have no bodies at all. We want to slip into our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by everlasting life.”

Also, 2 Corinthians 4:16 says, “Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.

Why does God allow Sickness?

We frequently hear people asking why God allows sickness. In search of answers, we can only turn to the different Bible verses about sickness. The issue of sickness is always challenging to deal with. However, we must always remember that God’s ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:9). It is rather unfortunate that whenever we are suffering from a disease, illness, or injury, we are more focused on the pains than what good God might bring about as a result. Always keep in mind that God can bring about good from any situation  (Romans 8:28). Today, we regularly hear many people giving testimonies by looking back on times of sickness as times when they grew closer to God and received His blessings. Others testify of having learned to trust God more in times of sickness. Behold, this is not to say that sickness is always from God.

Also, we are not saying that God always inflicts us with sickness in order to teach a spiritual lesson. We dwell in a sin-curses world where sickness, illness, and death will always be with us. The fall of man in the Garden of Eden led to his expulsion and rendered his body prone to sickness, sin, illness, and death. There are certain sicknesses that are as a result of the natural cause of things in this world. Sickness can also be the result of a demonic attack. The Bible describes instances were sickness or physical affliction was caused by Satan and demons (Matthew 17:14-18; Luke 13:10-16). There are some sicknesses that are not God caused but from Satan. Even when Satan afflicts us physically, God is still in control. He can still turn it for our good as it was the case of job (Job 1 and Job 2).
