Bible Verses About Fruitfulness

There are many Bible Verses About Fruitfulness worth knowing by all followers of Christ. Across the Scriptures, fruit is a metaphor being used to describe the outward demonstration of one’s inward disposition. In simple terms, our “Fruits” include things like our attitude, behavior, words, and thoughts. It is important to understand here that fruits can either be good or bad. Naturally, all people produce bad fruits as pointed out by the scriptures (i.e. sinful deeds, attitudes, actions, or behavior; see Romans 7:5; Galatians 5:19-21; Matthew 15:18–20). All our bad behaviors/fruits do come as a result of the fact that we are born with sinful natures or bad hearts (Romans 5:12; Psalm 51:5; Ephesians 2:3). It is due to the sinful natures that we are born with that we naturally produce bad fruits.

By clearly understating what it means to be a Christian, we eventually understand what it means to be a fruitful Christian. Although this might seem obvious, the truth is that there is big misconception these days on what it means to be a Christian. A good number of people believe that doing outwardly “good” deeds, being born to Christian parents, and/or regularly going to Church is what makes a Christian. Unfortunately, this is not necessarily the case. You can read our article on Why Going To Church Does Not Make You A Christian. Whatever the case, God’s word teaches that a Christian is a person who has been born again through faith in Jesus Christ and is therefore a new creation who dwells in the light of God’s ways and is empowered by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9–11; John 3:3; 2 Corinthians 5:17; 1 Peter 1:23).

Bible Verses About Fruitfulness

What the Scriptures say about Fruitfulness

Apostle Paul in Romans 7:5 says; “For when we were in the realm of the flesh . . . we bore fruit for death.” When we dwell out of Christ in the flesh, all the fruits that we produce can only lead to death. A fruitful Christian in Christ is destined to produce life yielding results according to Proverbs 11:30 – “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life.” According to Matthew 15:19, fruit is the direct result of whatever controls our hearts. The fruits of a life that has not been surrendered to Jesus Christ as revealed in Galatians 5:19-20 includes “idolatry and witchcraft, sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery, jealousy, discord, fits of rage, hatred” and many more evil or wicked things of the same likeness. In contrast, the fruits coming from the Spirit of God according to Galatians 5:22-23 are “love, peace, joy, kindness, faithfulness, goodness, and self-control.”

God the Father Almighty is the gardener as we can read from John 15:1, and He absolutely requires us t be fruitful. Let’s support this by reading from John 15:5 – “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” These are the words of Jesus Christ who portrayed Himself as the vine, the Christians as the branches, and His Father as the Gardener. That is, we cling or depend on Christ for the production of fruits just as branches cling to the vine. In this very relationship, we draw our life from Him who nourishes us. The ultimate goal in Christianity is to produce “much fruits” as Christ uses us to bring blessed and celestial results in a broken and fallen world.

Living fruitful lives in Jesus Christ

When we Sincerely Repent and start obeying the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ, the natural result which we reflect is behavioral choices that look like His. That is, we reflect Christ in our thoughts, words, and actions thereby pleasing God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth. Jesus Christ was clear on the fact that all His true followers will be recognized or identified by their fruits as we can read from Matthew 7:16-20 – “Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.”

Behold brethren, there are many ways through which a Christian can be fruitful thereby gaining mercy and favor before God through Christ. True or genuine fruitfulness is one that begins in the heart with the manifestation of the fruits of the Holy Spirit such as love, mercy, compassion, goodness, faithfulness, and trustfulness. These inner fruits are reflected in our outward actions and words. Hence, bringing glory to God and leading to the accomplishment of His Holy Will on Earth as it is in Heaven. According to Romans 8:29, God’s desire is to transform us into the image of Christ thereby making us fruitful as He was. In allegiance to Christ, we definitely want to be characterized by good works (Ephesians 2:10), humility (Ephesians 4:2), and a forgiving mind (Ephesians 4:32).

Important points to note about fruitfulness

It is very important to understand that being fruitful is not something that is accomplished or achieved through mere human willpower. Fruitfulness can only be achieved through God’s sovereign power being manifested in us through the Holy Spirit which sets our hearts after the will of the Father Almighty. Whatever the case, being fruitful is the work of grace (John 15:1–5; Philippians 2:13; 1 Corinthians 15:10). In addition, good fruits cannot be genuinely judged by mere external acts. If that were to be the case, then the Pharisees would be the most fruitful of all people on Earth. Instead, we perceive Jesus Christ referring to them as white-washed tombs. This is because although they appear good on the outside, they are rotten on the inside (Matthew 23:5–7).

Their thoughts, words, and actions were not motivated by the love for Jess Christ, their neighbors, and above all the love for God. Instead of their minds to be motivated by the desire to glorify God, they were rather motivated by self-righteousness with the aim of appearing righteous before men. Hence, they bear bad fruit disguised as good fruit. Being a genuine Christian works from the inside out. Let’s support this message by reading from 2 Peter 1:5-8 – “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

How to Live a Fruitful Life

1. Fruitfulness comes from faithfulness to God (Psalm 105:12-22)

If you are serious about living a fruitful life, then you must remain faithful to God even in the face of challenges and obstacles. Truth be told, it is relatively easier to be faithful to God when everything is unfolding smoothly in life. However, the true test comes when you face fierce temptations and great trials. These trials and challenges are not there to killing you but to make you stronger in the spiritual realms if you successfully go through them. In addition, successfully going through them will move God’s hand to bringing forth your promotion and making you fruitful. Remember the story of Joseph, he remained faithful to God even in prison. God remembered him and made his life fruitful as we can read from Genesis 37-50.

2. Fruitfulness comes from the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 6:3-7:1)

Your life should be one of fruitfulness because the Holy Spirit dwells in you. Remember that you are a temple in which God lives. Today, God is dwelling in us through His Spirit just as in the Old Testament, He lived in the Holy of Holies. And it is without doubt that the Holy Spirit produces good and lasting fruits in the lives of those who welcome Him as we can read from Galatians 5:22-23.

3. Fruitfulness comes from closeness to Jesus Christ (Isaiah 3:1-5:7)

Behold brethren, let no one deceive you for God loves you and wants you to stay closer to Him. In short, He wants you to be a productive branch in His vine. Unfaithfulness to God is like being cut off from the vine. And as we know, once a branch has been cut off from the vine, it is no longer fruitful and can only be thrown into fire. On the other hand, being faithful to God by remaining closer to Christ as we obey His teachings is like being a fruitful branch that bears much fruit. The gardener will certainly be pleased and intern pour more water as provision for the vine and its branches.
