Bible Verses About Purification

There are many Bible Verses About Purification worth learning about by all the followers of Jesus Christ. They help us to better understand the mission of Jesus Christ and what He fulfilled on the cross at Calvary. One might ask, “what is purification?” In simple terms, purification was the process by which an unclean person, according to the Levitical Law, who was cut off from the sanctuary and the festivals, was restored to the enjoyment of all these privileges. It was on the Day of Atonement that the children of Israel would gather for the great annual purification. However, in the very details of daily life, there existed special causes of ceremonial uncleanness that were severally offered by ceremonial laws decreed or ratified for each separate case.

Some examples of special causes that required purification are: The case of a house defiled by leprosy ( 14:49-53 ; also read Matthew 8:2-4 ) and the case of the leper ( Leviticus 1314 ,14). We also have the case of the High Priest and the Nazarite ( Leviticus 21:1-4 Leviticus 21:11 Leviticus 21:10  ; Ezekiel 44:25; Numbers 6:6 Numbers 6:7 ). Purification of uncleanness for touching a dead body (Hosea 9:4 ; Numbers 19:11 ; Haggai 2:13 ; Luke 11:44; Matthew 23:27 ). Purification executed by bathing and washing the cloths ( Leviticus 14:8 Leviticus 14:9 ); by diligently washing the hands ( Deuteronomy 21:6 ; Matthew 27:24 ); and that by diligently washing the hands and feet ( Exodus 30:18-21 ; Hebrews 6:2). There was also purification by sprinkling with blood and water ( Exodus 24:5-8 ; Hebrews 9:19 ).

Bible Verses About Purification

According to the Smith’s Bible Dictionary, Purification

in its legal and technical sense, is applied to the ritual observances whereby an Israelite was formally absolved from the taint of uncleanness. The essence of purification, in all eases, consisted in the use of water, whether by way of ablution or aspersion; but in the majora delicta of legal uncleanness, sacrifices of various kinds were added and the ceremonies throughout bore an expiatory character. Ablution of the person and of the clothes was required in the cases mentioned in ( Leviticus 15:18 ; 11:25,40 ; 15:18,17 ) In cases of childbirth the sacrifice was increased to a lamb of the first year, with a pigeon or turtle-dove. (Leviticus 12:8 ) The ceremonies of purification required in cases of contact with a corpse or a grave are detailed in (Numbers 19:1 ) …

The purification of the leper was a yet more formal proceeding, and indicated the highest pitch of uncleanness. The rites are described in (Leviticus 14:4-32 ) The necessity of purification was extended in the post-Babylonian Period to a variety of unauthorized cases. Cups and pots and brazen vessels were washed as a matter of ritual observance. (Mark 7:4 ) The washing of the hands before meals was conducted in a formal manner. (Mark 7:3 ) What play have been the specific causes of uncleanness in those who came up to purify themselves before the Passover, (John 11:55 ) or in those who had taken upon themselves the Nazarites’ vow, (Acts 21:24,26 ) we are not informed. In conclusion it may he observed that the distinctive feature. In the Mosaic rites of purification is their expiatory character. …

What does the Scripture say about Purification?

The idea of uncleanness was not peculiar to the Jew; but with all other nations simple ablution sufficed: no sacrifices were demanded. The Jew alone was taught by the use of expiatory offerings to discern to its fullest extent the connection between the outward sign and the inward fount of impurity.

Overview

The truth is that there is much that is being said in the Scriptures about purification. Purification is aimed at making a person pure, hence the idea of purity. In talking about purification, one might want to know what purity is all about. The Scripture teaches us that purity is freedom from anything that contaminates. In simple terms, purity is the quality of being faultless, unadulterated, or uncompromised. Each time that we talk of pure water, we mean water that is free from any other substances. Likewise, pure gold is one that has been refined to the extent that all dross has been removed. In the same light, a pure life is one that sin no longer determines the choices that a person makes. Behold, purity is of a great importance to God, who alone is truly pure. The Scripture uses purity on several occasions to communicate holiness or perfection.

The Scripture tells us that when Moses was building the Tabernacle, God gave him specific instructions that necessitated that the lampstand and other items in the Holy Place be made of “of pure gold” (Exodus 25:31; cf. 37:2, 16). In addition, the oil and the frankincense used in the Tabernacle was to be pure  (Leviticus 24:2, 7). The Lord God Almighty has “pure” eyes (Habakkuk 1:13) and speaks “pure” words (Psalm 12:6). In the same light of purity, the New Jerusalem is described as a “city of pure gold, as pure as glass” (Revelation 21:18). In fact, when God created Heaven and Earth (Genesis 1 — 2), everything was pure. Behold, there was no sin, death, pollution, or decay. Our Heavenly Father created pure things because He is pure. In Him, there is no confusion, contradiction, or compromise.

More on what the scripture says about purification

The Scripture tells us that God made everything good (Psalm 18:30; 145:17). Likewise, He created human beings to reflect His image and to live pure, unbroken communion with Him (Genesis 1:27). It is rather unfortunate that man sinned and fell short of God’s glory. And as the Scripture points to it, sin is the corruptor of purity (Psalm 14:3). Throughout the Scriptures, impurity is listed as one of the factors that will keep us away from God’s Holy Presence (Galatians 5:19–21; Colossians 3:5–6; 1 Corinthians 6:9–10). It is important to understand here that impurity renders a person or a nation unfit to enter the Holy Presence of God (Joshua 3:5; Ephesians 5:5; James 4:8; Revelation 21:27). For us to have genuine fellowship with God who is all-holy, we must claim the purity that He originally intended for us (Psalm 24:3–4).

Psalm 24:3–4 says, “Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart.” In the Old Testament, people reclaimed purity by sacrificing the animals that God specified for the purification of their sins. God had clearly declared that He would purify them (Leviticus 22:32) if they diligently keep all His commands (Leviticus 22:31), His sacrifices (Exodus 8:27), and His Sabbaths (Leviticus 26:2). Behold, repentance and faith or absolute trust in a coming Savior, as shown in obedience to the Law, were sufficient for God Almighty to pronounce His people righteous. In the New Testament, purity is reclaimed by placing our faith or absolute trust in the perfect sacrifice of the Promised Savior, Jesus Christ of Nazareth (Romans 6:3–7).

True and Perfect Purification through Jesus Christ

There is just no way for us to be pure enough on our own to see God (Romans 3:23). Likewise, there is no animal sacrifice, human being, spirit, or deity that can give us Eternal Life or make us worthy to see God apart from Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12). For us to be free from Eternal Condemnation in the Lake of Fire, and given God’s special gift of Eternal Life, we must Believe, Sincerely Repent, obey the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ and have His righteousness credited to our accounts (2 Corinthians 5:21). This is what it actually means to be a Christian or follower of Jesus Christ. We have been born again through faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:3), and our lives should be directed towards living in purity (1 Peter 1:15–16).

Purity should be reflected in our thought life (2 Corinthians 10:5), words (Ephesians 4:29), and actions (1 Corinthians 10:31). Today, the term purity is often used in relation to sexuality. sexual purity is freedom from immorality or perversion. Some girls even wear purity rings to indicate their commitment to saving sex for marriage. Those who strive for holiness will keep themselves sexually pure. Although important, purity is not limited to sexuality (Ephesians 5:2; 1 Corinthians 6:18). Our Heavenly Father wants us to live purely in all dealings with our neighbors (Ezekiel 45:10; Luke 6:31).

The Promise of Jesus for the Pure in heart

In Matthew 5:8, Jesus says “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Whenever our hearts are clouded with impurity, we cannot hear God’s voice talk-less of experiencing His presence. It is important to understand here that our claim for righteousness is one that should always be focused on what Jesus has done (Titus 3:5) as we strive hard to forsake sin (1 John 3:9) and live in purity of heart as we enjoy fellowship with God through Christ.
