Speaking Things Into Existence

Discover what Speaking Things Into Existence is all about. Behold, speaking things into existence is solely within God’s power and exclusively His right. The Bible makes us understand that in creating the World, God simply spoke things into existence. That is, God simply spoke, and light appeared (Genesis 1:3); the sky was formed (verses 7–8); dry land emerged (verse 9); vegetation sprang up (verse 11); the sun, moon, and shining stars appeared (verses 14–15); fish and birds came into existence (verses 20–21); animal life was as well called into existence (verse 24). Amazingly, God’s act of creation clearly reveals His unique and mighty power in a way that can never be duplicated. In simple words, God is the only one who can speak things into existence. Speaking things into existence is not something that we, human beings, have the power to do.

Speaking things into existence is solely within the power and might of the Almighty God. When the Lord God Almighty brought the plagues upon Egypt, the pagan magicians were able to mimic the results of the first two miracles. But when Moses following the instructions of the Lord God Almighty turned the dust of the ground into gnats, the magi of Egypt were stumped. That is, they could not animate inanimate things: “This is the finger of God,” they told Pharaoh (Exodus 8:19). Today, there are people who believe that it is possible for mankind to speak things into existence. Most of them base their claims on a misinterpretation of certain Scripture passages. However, we are likely to make such mistakes when we only look at one verse of one short section of Scripture, without considering that passage in its proper context.

Speaking Things Into Existence

Among the Biblical verses that people often cite when trying to prove that man can speak things into existence is Mark 11:24,  “I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Interestingly, these words of Jesus Christ do not in any way communicate the idea of creation – bringing something into existence that did not previously exist. It is important to note that in the previous verse (Mark 11:23), Jesus gives the example of moving a mountain, but He does not mention the idea of speaking a new mountain into existence. In addition, Mark 11:24 must be taken in context with the rest of Scripture. We are told in 1 John 5:14 that, “If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” As Christians, we are called to submit to God’s will in our prayers.

When we pray according to God’s will through Christ our Lord and Savior, our prayers are heard. And the Lord God Almighty who hears our prayers is willing and ready to answer us. Jeremiah 29:12 says, “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.” Likewise, Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Submission to God’s will in prayer yields positive results. However, we are never given the power to speak things into existence. Elsewhere, Jesus Christ taught, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). It is by seeking God’s will, aligning our desires and thoughts with His desires and thoughts that we show true faith.

What The Scriptures Say

The Scriptures call on us to seek first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). Seeking first the kingdom of God has to do with going after His will, aligning our thoughts and desires with His thoughts and desires. This leads us to ask for the things that God wants, not the things that we want. At this point, our desires become His desires, and our prayers become requests to fulfill His desires rather than our own. It is important to understand that the purpose of prayer is not to speak things into existence but to conform our will to God’s as we can read from Luke 22:42 – “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.

Another Biblical verse often used as a proof text that we can speak things into existence is Romans 4:17 that talks of “the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.” Some people stick to the phrase “calls into being things that were not” and try using it as Biblical evidence that we can do the same. This is a misinterpretation because Apostle Paul is clearly talking about God, not man, calling things into existence. Speaking things into existence is God’s specialty and not ours. Likewise, the Scripture points to mankind’s inability to speak things into existence. Lamentations 3:37 asks the rhetorical question, “Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it?” The answer, of course, is “no one.” Behold, we do not have the power to speak things into existence through the sheer force of our word.
