What Does the Bible Say About Agnosticism

What Does the Bible Say About Agnosticism? Agnosticism is the view that the existence of God is impossible to be known or proven. The word “agnostic” essentially means “without knowledge.” Notice that agnosticism is a more intellectually honest form of atheism. Atheism openly claims that God does not exist – an unprovable position. Agnosticism argues that God’s existence cannot be proven or unproven – that it is impossible to know whether or not God exists. In this, agnosticism is correct. Behold, God’s existence cannot be empirically proven or disproven. The Bible explicitly tells us that we must accept by faith that God exists. Hebrews 11:6 says that without faith “it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

God is spirit (John 4:24) so he cannot be seen or touched. Unless God chooses to reveal Himself, He is invisible to our senses (Romans 1:20). Deuteronomy 29:29 says, “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.” Scripture declares that the existence of God can be clearly seen in the universe (Psalm 19:1-4), sensed in nature (Romans 1:18-22), and confirmed in our own hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Agnostics are unwilling to make a decision either for or against the existence of God. It is the ultimate “straddling the fence” position. Theists believe that God exists. Atheists believe that God does not exist. Agnostics believe that we should not believe or disbelieve in God’s existence because it is impossible to know either way.

What the Bible Says About Agnosticism

For the sake of argument, let’s throw out the clear and undeniable evidence of God’s existence. And as such, if we put the positions of agnosticism and theism on equal footing, which makes the most “sense” to believe in regards to the possibility of life after death? If there is no God, agnostics and theists alike all simply cease to exist when they die. If there is a God, both agnostics and theists will have someone to answer to when they die. From this perspective, it definitely makes more “sense” to be a theist than agnostic. If neither position can be explicitly proven or disproven, it seems wise to make every effort to thoroughly examine and consider the position that may have an infinitely and eternally more desirable end result.

It is just normal to have doubts. There are many things in the world that we do not explicitly understand. Most times, people doubt the existence of God because they do not understand or agree with the things He does and allows. However, as finite human beings, we should not expect to be able to comprehend an infinite God. Romans 11:33-34 exclaims, “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! ‘Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?’” We must believe in God by faith and trust His ways by faith. Behold, God is willing and ready to reveal Himself in amazing ways to those who will believe in Him.
Deuteronomy 4:29 proclaims, “But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find Him if you look for Him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Definition, Meaning, and Origin of Agnosticism

An agnostic is defined by Merriam-Webster as someone who is not committed to the belief in an ultimate reality, such as God or a god. They think, If He exists, He is unknowable. The term “agnosticism,” comes from the Greek word, gnosis, which means knowledge. By adding the letter, “A” to the front of it, the sense is changed to one of unknowing. For our purpose, we are centering on the agnostic’s view of God, whom the agnostics say is unknowable. Most people agree that agnosticism first came to the fore in 1869 when British professor, T. H. Huxley coined the term, “agnosticism.” He was called “Darwin’s Bulldog” because he strongly defended the theory of evolution,

Professor T. H. Huxley’s explanation was that he did not know about metaphysical things (things that transcend the physical senses), yet his view is a conundrum, for he contradicts himself in his own very explanation. On one hand, he says that there is no way to search the unknowable (metaphysics) because of man’s limits, and on the other, he says what is knowable (including metaphysical things) can come by way of scientific inquiry. He later referred to his doctrine as one of necessary ignorance.

Can you be Agnostic and Christian?

To be a faithful and genuine Christian as defined in the Bible—the ultimate source of Truth—one cannot be an agnostic. Knowing God comes through general revelation and special revelation—mutually—and He initiates both. General revelation is available to all; it shows His very existence. It’s how God reveals Himself through the natural world. Psalm 19 tells us the heavens declare His glory, and the skies show His Creation. Special revelation is from God’s Word—the Bible. Romans 1:18-32 gives detail about God’s wrath advancing against those who “suppress the truth in unrighteousness.” This Scripture further informs us that what we know about Him is made clear to us, “for God has shown it to them.” Behold, the Bible says humans have no excuse because God has shown Himself through what He created and most specifically through Jesus Christ.

Those who “professed themselves as wise became fools” because they worship the created rather than the Creator (Romans 1:22-23). It is God who draws men to Himself (John 6:44a), and He does this by both forms of revelation. Jesus says, “Whoever is not with Me is against Me, and whoever does not gather with Me scatters” (Matthew 12:30). That’s an indictment not to be dismissed, and it leaves no gray area; you either believe or you don’t. A believer loves the Lord and believes God raised Him from the dead. One who chooses not to believe is condemned already (John 3:18). There are no maybe believers (Hebrews 11:6).
When a Christian, believer or follower of Jesus Christ wears the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:14-17), one of the components he/she wears is the “helmet of salvation.” Anyone who Sincerely Repents and Believes in Christ receives God’s special gift of Eternal Life.

Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.
