What Does The Bible Say About Godly Leadership

What Does The Bible Say About Godly Leadership? Romans 12:8 (NLT) says, “If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously.” Behold, there is a lot that the Bible tells us about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit given to the Church is the Gift of Leadership. What is the Gift of Leadership? How can I know that I have the Gift of Leadership? How can I operate in the Gift of Leadership? The Greek word for lead in Romans 12:8 is proistemi which has several definitions. One meaning of this Greek word is to govern, to rule over, to give aid or to direct. Another meaning is to care or be concerned about. Notice that the spiritual gift of leadership is more people-oriented than task-oriented.

The gift of leadership is clearly manifested in people who care for those they have charge over. In fact, the spiritual gift of leadership is more about responsibilities and relationships. While it is an amazing spiritual gift, many people wonder whether they have it or not. In order to know whether or not you have this amazing spiritual gift, it’s important to start by asking yourself the following questions and finding the answers. Are you truly concerned about the physical, spiritual, psychological, and social well-being of others? Do you sincerely love your neighbor as you love yourself? Are you a visionary with a passion for leading? Do you care for God’s people and sincerely want to lead them into a deeper relationship/fellowship with Him through Christ? Are you courageous enough and able to motivate others even in difficult moments?

What Does The Bible Say About Godly Leadership?

Brothers and sisters in Christ, Scripture instructs those with the Spiritual Gift of Leadership to lead with zeal. The Greek word for zeal is zelos which means eagerness and enthusiasm. Another translation instructs those with this spiritual gift to lead with diligence. Brethren, anyone with the spiritual gift of leadership should take it seriously in bringing glory to God’s name. As a matter of fact, there is a responsibility to fulfill. Let’s responsibly make use of the gift to build the body of Christ. Take note that the gift of leadership is a special gift from the Holy Spirit to the Church. This gift deals more with relationships and responsibilities. And as such, you must have a heart that cares about the people and a heartfelt commitment to moving them forward. Gathering people and taking them on the right path is a task that requires leadership.

In all things, we should pray and ask the Lord God to equip and guide us through the Holy Spirit to accomplish His Will. As a matter of fact, there are several characteristics of those with the spiritual gift of leadership. Most importantly, they clearly understand that they are not absolute rulers but are themselves subject to the One who is over them, the Lord Jesus Christ who is the Head of the Church. Recognizing his place in the hierarchy of the administration of the body of Christ greatly contributes in preventing the highly gifted leader from succumbing to pride or a sense of entitlement. With this in mind, the truly gifted Christian leader clearly recognizes that he is but a slave of Christ and a mere servant of those he leads. Apostle Paul clearly understood this and openly referred to himself as a “servant of Christ Jesus” (Romans 1:1).

Biblical Facts about the Spiritual Gift of Leadership

Like Jesus Christ, the gifted leader lives by serving those he leads, and not to be served by them or lord it over them (Matthew 20:25–28). Biblically, we know of James, the half-brother of our Lord Jesus Christ, who had the gift of leadership as he led the Church in Jerusalem. Like the apostle Paul, James referred to himself as “a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ” (James 1:1). James exhibited another quality of spiritual leadership – the astonishing ability to sway other people to think godly, Biblically, and rightly in all matters. At the Jerusalem Council, James dealt with the contentious issue of how to relate to Gentiles coming to faith in Jesus the Messiah.
Acts 15:13-14 says, “And after they had become silent, James answered, saying, ‘Men and brethren, listen to me: Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His Name.’” This led to the right decision (Acts 15:22–29).

Gifted leaders rule with willingness and diligence and possess the ability to discern true spiritual needs from “desired” needs. These Shepherds of God’s people lead others to maturity in the faith so that they can discern for themselves that which comes from God versus that which is temporary or cultural. The church leader’s words may not sound “wise and persuasive” from the viewpoint of human wisdom but are filled with the Power of the Holy Spirit, leading and encouraging others(1 Corinthians 2:4–6). Foremost, the goal of the gifted leader is to serve, guide, and guard those he leads “until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13).

Biblical Facts about the Spiritual Gift of Administration

The Bible says a lot about the spiritual gift of administration. Although sometimes overlooked, this spiritual gift is as important as the others. 1 Corinthians 12:28 says, “And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.” Notice that 1 Corinthians 12:28 as well as Romans 12:8 both include the gift of administration in their lists of spiritual gifts. Looking at different major translations of the Bible, the spiritual gift of administration is called “administrating” in the ESV, “leadership” in the NLT, “governments” in the KJV, or “guidance” in the NIV. Administration is referred to as a “team gift” since it thrives when called upon to organize people to accomplish an objective.

The Lord God gives some people the spiritual gift of administration so that they can use it to help organize those with other gifts and keep the Church functioning at its optimum level. As a matter of fact, the Lord God has given every true believer in Christ at least one spiritual gift to use in His service in order to bring glory to His Holy Name (1 Corinthians 12:7). Likewise, these spiritual gifts are given to edify or build up, the church (1 Corinthians 14:12). It’s important to understand that these gifts are not for building up our egos but to serve the Lord God with more power and effectiveness. Some people operate in many spiritual gifts. For example, people with pastoral/shepherding gifts may also possess the gift of administration. Note that it’s the Holy Spirit who distributes the gifts “just as he determines” (1 Corinthians 12:11).

Administrators and Leaders

Administrators are leaders. In cases where volunteers are needed to organize events, administrators are often heading. Each church’s leadership team needs at least one person with the gift of administration to effectively organize people and programs. Without effective leadership, great ideas can dissolve into chaos. In most cases, pastoral teams consist of one administrator and others with the gifts of mercy and shepherding. With this in mind, wise leaders welcome and respect each and everyone’s gifts, allowing room for manifestations. In this way, the Lord balances these gifts for optimal service in bringing glory to His name. A magnificent, merciful pastor can possibly be very disorganized in his own life and needs a person with the gift of administration to handle the business affairs of the church while he concentrates on the emotional and spiritual needs of his flock.

In addition, administrators are also excellent delegators. They seem to sense who would effectively handle a project and don’t mind inviting people, and recruiting volunteers for the accomplishment of projects they strongly believe in. Based on their leadership styles or personalities, administrators tend to gravitate toward either programs or people. Extroverted administrators thrive when working with people. In working towards the accomplishment of their tasks, they often appoint leadership teams, effectively organize volunteers, and recruit those who need a little nudge to get involved in the project. On the other hand, introverted administrators tend to feel more comfortable behind the scenes, organizing calendars, and planning events that benefit the whole church. While extroverted administrators are more relational, introverted administrators are more project-oriented in their approach.

More facts

Have you ever wondered how churches grow to megachurches and how they are managed? Several pastors of megachurches have the gift of administration. They have the ability to lead as well as inspire other people to lead. This ability significantly contributes to the growth of their churches. However, a danger for pastors with the gift of administration is that it’s easy for them to slip into a competitive mindset especially when they start seeing rapid growth in the number of church members. Therefore, those with the gift of administration must never forget that the church is not a for-profit business. The church is a ministry that must operate in line with the teachings of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish what the Lord God wants.

Notice that administrators may be prone to adopting business strategies that they see working in other sectors of life. And as such, may appear successful while actually working in the flesh. Romans 8:8 says, “Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.” Nevertheless, the spiritual gift of administration is a valuable asset to the growth and establishment of the church. The Lord God wants His children to discover, develop, and make use of the different gifts that He has placed in them for the advancement of His Kingdom and His Glory. By engaging in ministries that utilize our gifts, we are bringing honor and credit to the Lord God who gave them (Romans 12:3-8).
