What Does The Bible Say About Hell?

What Does The Bible Say About Hell? According to the Christian doctrine, hell as mentioned in the Bible is a place of eternal condemnation or punishment which will serve as a final destination for all unbelievers. Hell is described in the Scripture using several terms such as the “lake of fire,” “outer darkness,” “eternal fire,” “a place of weeping and torment,” “unquenchable fire,” and the “second death.” The Bible clearly teaches the terrifying reality that hell is a place of complete and unending separation from God Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth. It is not God’s wish that we end up in Hell. He is merciful and wants us to have everlasting life (2 Peter 3:9). The Bible tells us that God is Love (1 John 4:16).

God is the originator of Love and all His thoughts, words, and actions are fueled by love. Let’s support this by reading from Jeremiah 31:3 – “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving kindness I have drawn you.” In addition, the Bible tells us that God does not even enjoy perceiving the death of a wicked person as we can read from Ezekiel 33:11 – “…’As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live…For why should you die, O house of Israel?’” It is for this reason that God Almighty gave His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be sacrificed on the Cross so that anyone who Sincerely Repents, Believes in Him, and obeys His Key Teachings will be given Eternal Life.

What Does The Bible Say About Hell?

What the Scriptures say about Hell

Is Hell a real place?

It is quite interesting that a higher percentage of people believe in the existence of heaven than they believe in the existence of hell. However, this is not how the Bible wants u to perceive this subject matter. In the Bible, Hell is just as real as Heaven. Behold brethren, let no one deceive you for the Scriptures assure us that hell is a real place. Another truth is that hell has no place in God’s original creation, which He referred to as ‘Good’ for the Scriptures say that everything that God created was Good. (Genesis 1). That is why it is important to understand here that Hell was created to accommodate the banishment of Satan and his fallen angels who rebelled against God’s Holy Will (Matthew 24:41). Also note that all human beings who reject Christ will join Satan and his fallen angels in the infernal place of suffering.

The Bible clearly and explicitly teaches that hell is a real place to which the wicked/unbelieving are sent after death. The Scripture says that we have all sinned against God (Romans 3:23). In addition, it says that the just punishment for our sins is death (Romans 6:23). Due to the fact that our sin is against God (Psalm 51:2) who is an infinite and eternal Being, the punishment for sin, death, must also be infinite and eternal. Behold, hell is this infinite and eternal death which we earn from our sins. This is actually what the Bible says about hell.

Description of Hell across the Scriptures

According to what the Bible says about hell, dead in hell is the punishment for the wicked which is described across the Scriptures as “Eternal Fire” (Matthew 25:41),  a place where “the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:44-49), “unquenchable fire” (Matthew 3:12), a place of “torment” and “fire” (Luke 16:23-24), “shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2), a place where “the smoke of torment rises forever and ever” (Revelation 14:10-11), “everlasting destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:9), and a “lake of burning sulfur” where the wicked are “tormented day and night forever and ever” (Revelation 20:10).

It is important to note here that the punishment of the wicked in hell is never ending just as the bliss of the righteous through Christ in heaven. Jesus Christ Himself pointed out to the fact that the punishment in hell is just as everlasting as the life reserved for the faithful and believers in heaven (Matthew 25:46). Hence, we can say without doubt that the wicked are forever subject to the fury and wrath of God. All those in hell will acknowledge the perfect justice of God (Psalm 76:10). In addition, they will come to understand that their punishment is just and that they have only themselves to blame (Deuteronomy 32:3-5). Our of God’s love for mankind, we can escape this eternal punishment in hell through Jesus Christ by accepting Him, believing in Him, and obeying His Teachings.

Terms for Hell in the Bible

1. Sheol

Sheol is a Hebrew word that occurs 65 times in the Old Testament. This Hebrew word is translated into English as “hell,” “death,” “the grave,” and “the pit.” Sheol is the Hebrew word that is used to identify the general abode of the dead, a place were life no longer exists. In line with the Hebrew Bible, Sheol is specifically  “the place of the unrighteous dead:”

The existence of Sheol is supported by many Bible verses about hell, one of which is Psalm 49:13–14 – “This is the path of those who have foolish confidence; yet after them people approve of their boasts. Selah. Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol; death shall be their shepherd, and the upright shall rule over them in the morning. Their form shall be consumed in Sheol, with no place to dwell.”

2. Hades

Hades is the Greek word translated as “hell” in the New Testament. This Greek term is much similar to Sheol and often associated with a place of torment for the wicked/unbelievers. Hades is described as a prison with gates, bars, and locks, and its location is downward.

One of the best Bible verses about hell that supports the existence of Hades is Acts 2:27–31 – “‘For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.”

3. Gehenna

Gehenna is another Greek word which is originally derived from the “Valley of Hinnom,” and is used in the New Testament to portray “hell.” Gehenna expresses a place of final judgement and eternal punishment for sinners. You might be wondering how it came about and its relationship with the place of punishment. In the Old Testament, the Valley of Hinnon, South of Jerusalem, became a place of pagan sacrifice to the god molech (2 Kings 16:3; 21:6; 23:10). Later, the Jewish people used the valley as dumping grounds for garbage, dead animal carcasses, and even for the execution of criminals. The Bible reports that fires continually burned there to consume the refuse and dead bodies. This is how Gehenna became associated to the place where the wicked suffer after death.

Below are two examples in the Bible where Gehenna is translated as “hell.” Matthew 10:28 – “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.Matthew 25:41 – “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels …’

4. Tartarus

Tartarus is another Greek word which is used to portray “hell” or the “lower regions.” Just like Gehenna, Tartarus is a place of eternal punishment for sinners and the wicked. According to the ancient Greeks, Tartarus was the abiding place where rebellious gods, and wicked humans were punished. This word is used just once in the entire New Testament.

Let’s support the existence of Tartarus by reading from 2 Peter 2:4 – “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment …

What the Bible says about Hell

Behold, Jesus plainly taught about the existence of hell. Up to some extent, we can say that He spoke of hell more often than He did of heaven. There is much that has been said in the Bible about hell and any reasonable Christian must come to terms with the doctrine. Below are some of the key Biblical teachings on hell which are inline with the best Bible verses about hell:

1. Punishment in Hell is Eternal

Daniel 12:2 – “Many of those whose bodies lie dead and buried will rise up, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting disgrace.Isaiah 66:24 –And they will go out and look upon the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me; their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind.” Matthew 25:46 – “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.Jude 7 – And don’t forget Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and serve as a warning of the eternal fire of God’s judgment.

Mark 9:43 – “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one hand than to go into the unquenchable fires of hell with two hands.Revelation 14:11 – “And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

2. Hell is a place of Eternal Separation from God

2 Thessalonians 1:9 – “They will be punished with eternal destruction, forever separated from the Lord and from his glorious power.

3. Hell is a place of Fire

Matthew 13:41–42 – “The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will remove from his Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. And the angels will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 3:12 – “His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.Revelation 20:15 – “And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.Matthew 13:50 – “... throwing the wicked into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

4. The wise will avoid Hell

Proverbs 15:24 – “The way of life winds upward for the wise, that he may turn away from hell below.

5. Hell is for the Wicked

Psalm 9:17 – “The wicked shall return to Sheol, all the nations that forget God.”

6. We can endeavor to save others from hell

Jude 23 –Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. Show mercy to still others, but do so with great caution, hating the sins that contaminate their lives.Proverbs 23:14 – “Physical discipline may well save them from death.

7. The Beast, Devil, False Prophet, and demons will be all thrown into hell:

Revelation 19:20 – “And the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who did mighty miracles on behalf of the beast—miracles that deceived all who had accepted the mark of the beast and who worshiped his statue. Both the beast and his false prophet were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur.” Matthew 25:41 – “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons.’ Revelation 20:10 – “… and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”

8. Hell has no power over the Church of Jesus Christ

Revelation 20:6 – “Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.” Matthew 16:18 – “Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.

Questions And Answers About Hell

1. Who was hell created for?

The Bible clearly answers this question. Let’s get the answer from Matthew 25:41 –  “Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” On the other hand, Matthew 25:33-34 says that those who chose to follow Christ will “inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” It is important to understand here that the original purpose of hell and its fire was to ultimately destroy Satan, Sin, and the Fallen Angels. This cleaning of fire is that which will make away with the tears of those who are saved.

2. Is hell burning right now in the center of the Earth?

We frequently hear people asking questions like, “Are there people suffering in hell right now?” Let’s get a picture of hell and when it’s fires will burn by reading from Job 21:30-32 – “For the wicked are reserved for the day of doom; they shall be brought out on the day of wrath.” Following this text together with that from Apostle Peter (2 Peter 3:7), we can say with some degree of certainty that hell is not burning now, but will burn in the future at God’s time after the wicked must have been brought ought of their graves, judged, and condemned on the day of wrath.

We can also get the same message by reading from John 5:28-29 – “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.” This is an additional outline that the time is coming in the future, but it is not yet, when final condemnation and destruction will take place. This is an indication that not one person is currently burning in hell at the moment. However, all the death and those still alive are awaiting for judgement. Those found worthy will be send into God’s presence while those judged and found guilty will be send into the fires of hell.

3. Are people suffering in hell right now?

In line with the Scriptures from Job 21:30-32 and John 5:28-29, we can say that the dead are reserved for judgement. They await judgement just like the Devil and the fallen angels. It is after judgement that the righteous shall be separated from the wicked and each and everyone rewarded accordingly. The righteous in Christ will see God while the wicked will be cast into the lake of fire together with Satan and the fallen angels.

4. Where is hell located?

Although we cannot give a clear answer to this question, the Bible gives us some elements of knowledge. John 5:29 tells us that the resurrection of the righteous will be unto everlasting life, while the resurrection of the wicked will be unto condemnation and the wrath of God. This very message is portrayed in Revelation 20:5 concerning the resurrection of the wicked from their graves. Revelation 20:4-6 clearly and explicitly talks about the resurrection of the righteous. It is said that when the wicked will resurrect and cover the face of the earth, the devil will convince them to attack the beloved city of God. It is at that time that fire will come down from Heaven and destroy both Satan, the wicked, and the fallen angels.

Let’s further support our message by reading from 2 Peter 3:10 –  “…the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.

5. Is the Devil in-charge of Hell?

No, the Devil is not in charge of hell, but he is actually thrown into Hell or the Lake of Fire according to Revelation 20:10. Behold, Satan is not the one who sends down hellfire unto the wicked who surround the camp and the beloved city. If the Devil was in charge, he could keep himself out of the burning fire together with its consequences.

6. What happens to the wicked in Hell?

According to many Bible verses about hell, the wicked are tormented day and night by the everlasting flames of fire.

7. Will the fires of hell go out or burn forever?

Behold, on the face of the Earth, there will be utter-destruction. You can be sure that nothing with the taint of sin will go safely. Let’s read from 2 Peter 3:10 – “both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.” Prophet Isaiah describes the everlasting fire that burns in hell with the following words “Behold, they [the wicked] shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it” (Isaiah 47:14). The fire will be just so complete that it will burn itself out not living behind even a single glowing coal.

8. What is the purpose of Hell?

One might likely ask the question, but why would God allow all these destruction to come true? In 2 Peter 3:10-14, we clearly hear Apostle Paul inviting us to go after a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness is the light that shines among men because our current earth which is on fire will melt. It is important to understand here that the fire purifies the earth and establishes a place of righteousness for the saved in Christ to dwell. Let’s also read from Isaiah 65:17 – “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.”

Apostle John clearly describes this righteous place in Revelation 21:1-5 –Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away…And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away…Then He who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’”

9. Why is hell and its destructive forces necessary?

You might be wondering why hell and its destructive forces are necessary. It is simply because, the cleansing fire brings a compete eradication of sin. Let’s support this point by reading from Ezekiel 28:18-19 – “Therefore I brought fire from your midst; it devoured you, and I turned you to ashes upon the earth…And [you] shall be no more forever.” In Nahum 1:9, we are told that sin will be eradicated through the burning of Satan, fallen angels, and wicked people.

10. How can I avoid Hell?

John 3:16 – “For God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not die but have eternal life.” It is by welcoming Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who came with a Life-Giving Message of Repentance and Faithfulness to God that we can avoid the Fire of Hell and given Eternal Life.

Facts About Hell in the Bible

1. Eternity
  • Everyone will exist eternally either in heaven or hell (Revelation 20:14,15; Matthew 25:46; Daniel 12:2,3; John 5:28).
  • Heaven or hell is determined by whether a person believes (puts their trust) in Christ alone to save them (John 3:16, 36, etc.).
  • Everyone has only one life in which to determine their destiny (Hebrews 9:27).
2. Key Biblical passages about Hell
  • Hell was designed originally for Satan and his demons (Revelation 20:10; Matthew 25:41).
  • Hell will also punish the sin of those who reject Christ (Revelation 20:11-15; 21:8; Matthew 13:41,50).
  • Hell is conscious torment “where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:48).
  • Those in hell are tormented with fire and brimstone (Revelation 14:10).
  • Hell is a furnace of fire where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:50).
3. Hell is Eternal and Irreversible
  • Revelation 20:14 – “This is the second death, the lake of fire.”
  • “The smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever and they have no rest day and night.” (Revelation 14:11)
  • Revelation 20:15 “If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
4. Erroneous views of Hell
  • The second chance view – After death there is still a way to escape hell. The Bible speaks against this in Hebrews 9:27 – “It is appointed unto men once to die and after that the judgment”.
  • Universalism – All are eternally saved. The Bible speaks against this in John 3:16;3:36. He who accepts Christ has life, he who does not will perish.
  • Annihilationism – Hell means a person dies like an animal – ceases to exist. The Bible also speaks against such false teachings that reject the resurrection of the death as mentioned in John 5:28 as well as the conscious torment that awaits the wicked.
5. Objections to the Biblical view of hell
  • One might say that a loving God will not send people to a horrible hell. But you must understand that God is just and under His reign, all must answer for their thoughts, words, and actions (Romans 2:11).
  • Another person might say that hell is too severe a punishment for man’s sins. It is important to understand here that God is Holy and Perfect. His ways are always right (1 Peter 1:14,15). And because sin opposes His Holy Nature, it can’t go unpunished or dwell in His presence.
6. Biblical terms describing where the dead are
  • Sheol – a Hebrew term simply describing “the grave” or “death” – Does not refer to “hell” specifically
  • Gehenna – A Greek term (borrowed from a literal burning dump near Jerusalem) that always refers to hell – a place of torment (Matthew 5:30; 23:33)
  • Hades – A Greek term that usually refers to hell – a place of torment (Luke 10:15; 16:23, etc.)
  • “Lake of fire”- the final abode of unbelievers after they are resurrected (Revelation 20:14,15)
  • “Paradise” – (Luke 23:43) a place of eternal comfort
  • “Abraham’s bosom” – (Luke 16:22) a place of eternal comfort
  • “With the Lord” – a key phrase describes where church age believers are after death (Philippians 1:23; 1 Thessalonians 4:17; 2 Corinthians 5:8)
  • “New heavens and earth” – where believers will be after they are resurrected (Revelation 20:4-6; 21:1-4)
