What Does The Bible Say About Lying

What Does The Bible Say About Lying? The Bible is clear that lying is a sin and it is displeasing to God. For sure you remember that the first sin in this world had to do with a lie that was told to Eve. It is also important to understand here that lying is listed as a sin among the Ten Commandments. Exodus 20:16 says, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” We can say without doubt that from the beginning of time, lying was seen as sinful. This truth was made evident in the condemnation of the serpent’s lie in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3) as God’s Judgement was passed. Remember how Abraham almost lost his wife upon lying that she was his sister instead of his wife. Luckily enough, God intervened and rescued them although it was wrong (Genesis 12:18-20).

Just as we dislike when someone lies to us, so does the Lord God Almighty. The Bible tells us that God Himself is incapable of lying as we can read from Hebrews 6:18 – “it is impossible for God to lie.” And as children of God, we ought to reflect His nature by staying away from all lies telling. The Book of John clearly explains the history of lying. Let’s support this message by reading from John 8:44 – “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do…he is a liar and the father of it.” Behold, lying without repentance and forgiveness leads to “the second death” as we can read from Revelation 21:8 – “all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

What Does The Bible Say About Lying?

We’ve been called to be faithful to the Bible’s teachings – one of which is to stay away from telling lies. If you’ve been failing to obey the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ in the Bible, it is time to Sincerely Repent, ask for forgiveness, and strive hard to do what God wants. Ask for forgiveness from those you’ve wronged or lied to. Turn to God, for “He is faithful and forgiving us our sins to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (Matthew 5:23-25; 1 John 1:9). Lying even in the face of death-or-life situations is discouraged by the Scriptures. Matthew 10:28 – “do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Your soul and salvation matter more than your body and should not be traded for anything in this life (Matthew 16:26).

What does the Scriptures say about Lying

In the early church, Ananias and Sapphira lied about a donation in order to make themselves appear more generous than they were really. Without hesitation, they received a stern rebuke from Apostle Peter who said “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit?” Behold, God’s judgement was sterner as the couple died for having lied to the Holy Spirit. Colossians 3:9 says, “Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices.” 1 Timothy 1:9-11 further describes the act of lying as something practiced by lawless people. In addition to this, Revelation 21:8 tells us that lies will be among those who will be judged at the end. In contrast, God never lies (Titus 1:2). He is the source of all truth. Hebrews 6:18 clearly tells us that “It is impossible for God to lie.”

Truth be told, God is not a man that He can lie nor fail to do what He says He will do. It is in this light that He has called us all by our names to follow His ways and strive to do only what we see Him doing. Jesus Christ referred to Himself as the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). It is without doubt that Christ expect all His followers to be people of truth. Ephesians 4:15 calls on us to always express the truth in love as we encourage our brothers and sisters to clean themselves from the lies of the world. People of truth who follow Christ can expect to receive God’s special gift of Eternal Life in His Kingdom.

Six (6) things that you should know about lying

1. Lying shows hate towards others (Proverbs 26:28)

Lying is a form of showing hate towards others as we can read from Proverbs 26:28 – “A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.

2. Lying can bring the judgement of God (Acts 5:3)

Lying can bring the judgement of God. This was demonstrated in the early church by Apostle Peter questioning two young believers about a lie that they made concerning an offering. Peter says in Acts 5:3 – “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?” God’s judgement came on both Ananias and his wife that very day thereby leading to their death.

3. Lying is ultimately the work of the Devil (John 8:44)

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, taught that lying is ultimately the work of the Devil. We can read this from John 8:44 – “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

4. Lying is part of “the old self” (Colossians 3:9)

Christ is calling on all His followers to stop lying because lying is part of the old self, one which died and was buried. Apostle Paul says in Colossians 3:9 – “Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices.”

5. Speaking truth shows love to neighbor while lying does not (Ephesians 4:25)

We’ve all been commanded by Jesus Christ to show love to our neighbors. One of the ways we can do this is by being truthful with them. By lying, we are not showing them love. Let’s support this point by reading from Ephesians 4:25 – “Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

6. Lying is the opposite of God’s truth (1 John 2:21)

Lying is clearly the opposite of God’s truth as we can read from 1 John 2:21 – “Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

Facts about lying

Lying, whether a big or a small lie, is sinful before God. Hence, we should turn to Him for forgiveness (1 John 1:9) as we learn to speak and walk in truth (Ephesians 4:15). By so doing, others will identify us with God as they give glory to Him and are encouraged to follow His ways (Matthew 5:16).

When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Which one of you convicts me of sin?
