What Does The Bible Say About Prayer?

What Does The Bible Say About Prayer? The truth is that we have many troubles in this world. However, we are certain that prayer will sustain and see us through. In fact, prayer is the key for Jesus our Lord and Savior started with prayer and ended with prayer. The Bible calls on us to pray at all times and pray without ceasing. Likewise, the Bible is full of Scripture about prayer and people who humbly prayed to God with all their heart and mind. Let’s hear what God has to say about prayer by reading from 2 Chronicles 87:14 – “…if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Jesus Christ Himself taught us how to pray as we can read from  Matthew 6:9-12. Hence, we can say without doubt that prayer is a huge part of our Christian walk. It is important to understand here that at times, prayer is a private matter and for this, God calls us to close our doors and lift our voices in prayer (Matthew 6:5-8). We can also say that corporate prayer is powerful for Christ said that wherever two or more are gathered in His name, He is there with them. Hence, we can say that it is a beautiful thing when Christians come together and agree to life up their voices in prayer. When we are also together, we rejoice in thankfulness as stories are shared about God’s goodness, holiness, might and sovereign authority over Heaven and Earth. Prayer is a powerful act of love and faith.

What Does The Bible Say About Prayer?

What does the Scripture say about Prayer?

The Scripture teaches us that whenever we are tempted to complain, gossip, or give up on someone, we should rather pray for them. Each time that we give God our worries and tears for our loved ones, we are acting in faith. Let’s support this by reading from Romans 12:12 – “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Likewise, 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Pray without ceasing.”

What is prayer?

The most basic definition of prayer is “talking to God.” That is, prayer is having a discussion with God. It has to do with talking about life with the one who knows us the most. Although God knows how we are doing because He is all-knowing (Omniscience), He wants us to communicate with Him. We serve a God who is trustworthy and willing to listen to our worries, doubts, fears, hurts, frustrations, and pains. Indeed, He is more than willing to hear and help us in our challenges. Behold, God is eager to hear us confess our sins and ask for forgiveness in prayer. In addition, He patiently waits for us to ask Him to provide our needs and see us through the different challenges of life. Behold brethren, let no one deceive you for there is no time that God is not available and willing to hear your prayers.

God is always available 24 hours seven days a week to hear and answer His children. Hence, we don’t need to make an appointment to talk with God. God is just everywhere and with believers always. The thing is that God gave us free will, and we choose daily how we are going to live. Hence, we are inviting you to make your life a prayer room as you pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). It is important to understand here that prayer is not meditation or passive reflection but a direct address to God Almighty. There is much to gain from prayer because it is a powerful communication of the human soul with the Lord who created the soul. We can say that it is the primary way for the believer in Jesus Christ to communicate his/her desires and emotions with God as well as fellowship with Him.

The Lord’s Prayer (The Gospel of St. Matthew 6:9-13)

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Mary’s song and prayer – Luke 1:46-55

“And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the LORD and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me- holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation, He has performed mighty deeds with his arm, he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble, He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”

Facts about prayer that you should know

Prayer can be audible or silent, formal or informal, private or public. However, all prayer must be offered in faith (James 1:6), in the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:26), and in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (John 16:23). The International Encyclopedia Bible puts it this way, “Christian prayer in its full New Testament meaning is prayer addressed to God as Father, in the name of Christ as Mediator, and through the enabling grace of the indwelling Spirit” (“Prayer” by J. C. Lambert). Truth be told, the wicked have no desire to pray (Psalm 10:4), but the children of the Almighty God have a natural desire in them to pray at all times (Luke 11:1).

The Bible clearly describes prayer as an act of seeking God’s favor (Exodus 32:11), crying to heaven (2 Chronicles 32:20), pouring out one’s soul to the Lord (1 Samuel 1:15), kneeling before the Father (Ephesians 3:14), and drawing near to God (Psalm 73:28). Let’s hear what Apostle Paul has to say about this matter by reading from Philippians 4:6–7 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” For this reason, we ought not to worry about anything but to pray about everything. Indeed, God wants us to talk with Him about everything.

More facts about prayer that you should know

One might ask, “how often should we pray?” The Bible tells us that we should “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). That is, we should keep a running conversation going with God all day long. There is really no fix formula of prayer in the Bible. Hence, we should just do it. That is, we should allow the Holy Spirit lead us to rightly discuss with our heavenly Father. For the Scripture says that we know not how to pray but the Holy Spirit guides us to pray God’s will. We can pray under any and all circumstances as the Spirit leads us for He dwells within us. Prayer grows and enhances our relationship with God. Likewise, it fortifies our trust or faith in Him even when things are not going well. Prayer is the Christian”s way of communicating with God.

As followers of Christ, we pray to seek for protection, guidance, and wisdom. In addition, we also pray to honor, worship, and give God praise for His holiness, great deeds, and sovereign authority over Heaven and Earth. We pray to praise God, give Him thanks, and tell Him how much we love Him. In addition, we pray to enjoy God’s guidance, protection, mercy, and blessings. Behold, fellowship with God is the heart of prayer. It is unfortunate that too often, we loose sight of how simple prayer really ought to be. By making petitions to God, we let Him know exactly where we stand and what we would like to see happen. That is why in prayers, we must acknowledge that God is greater than we are, and that He knows what is best for our situation (Romans 11:33–36).

The key to answered prayers

In prayer, it is important for us to end by saying that “Not my will, but your will be done.” Truth be told, the key to answered prayer is praying according to the Holy Will of God Almighty and in accordance to His Word (Bible). We call such “Scriptural Prayer.” It is one of the most powerful forms of prayer that opens Heaven and moves God’s hand to action. When you pray according to God’s will and word, you are simply claiming what He said about you. You are claiming the promises He made for you. And in this way, God hears and answers you. That’s why it is important for us to study His word on daily basis to know what is ours and not ours.

It is important to understand here that prayer is not seeking our will to be established but seeking to align our will with that of God Almighty, creator of Heaven and Earth (1 John 5:14–15; James 4:3). The Bible contains many examples of prayer as well as exhortations to lift our voices in prayer to God (see Romans 12:12; Luke 18:1; and Ephesians 6:18). In addition to this, God’s house is to be a house of prayer (Mark 11:17). Likewise, God’s people are to be people of prayer as we can read from Jude 1:20–21 – “Dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God’s love” Before presenting the best Bible verses about prayer, we’ll like to first answer the question on what does the Bible say we should pray for.
