What Does The Bible Say About Sadness? The Bible recounts many examples of sadness as the result of the fall and applications on the different ways through which we can glorify God through our sadness or moments of depression. Note that sadness is often the direct or indirect result of sin. And because we live in a fallen world, sin and its consequences are part of life (Psalm 90:10). Throughout the Psalms, we can hear David pouring out the sadness of his heart to God. Just like David, we often feel like God has abandoned us in our moments of sadness, depression, suffering, and persecution in the hands of those who reject and oppose us. David says in Psalm 13:2 – “How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?”

However, God is always faithful just as David concludes in Psalm 13:5-6 – “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me.” We can as well hear David rejoicing in his lot as a follower of the One, True God (Psalms 16). Also, David rejoices for his delightful inheritance in the Lord that comes with security and peace of mind. He further points to an increase of sorrow for those who reject the Lord God Almighty and follow other gods. However, David himself also encountered a series of sorrows each time that he sinned and the sin moved him out of God’s presence. He says in Psalm 31:10 – “For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away.”

What Does The Bible Say About Sadness?

Just as sin moved David away from God’s presence and led him into moments of sadness (Psalm 31:10), mercy brought him back. In the very next Psalm, we clearly hear David rejoicing in the unfailing mercy of God who forgives those who come before Him in Sincere Repentance. Let’s support this point by reading from Psalm 32:1-2 – “Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the LORD does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit.” With experience, David sums up the very matter of sorrow and sadness due to sin in Psalm 32:10 – “Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD.” The parable of the prodigal son recounted in Luke 15:11-24 by Jesus Christ also teaches us how to deal with sin-caused sadness.

Through the parable, Jesus Christ is teaching us the importance of confession and repentance. As followers of Christ, we ought to cultivate the characteristics of repentance, always confessing our sins to God in search of forgiveness. Likewise, we should also make it a habit to always excuse ourselves before those that we wrong. In doing this, we should have that desire to make restitution, and that to turn from our sinful ways in order to pursue godliness. According to Apostle Paul, our sin should lead to godly sorrow which rapidly turns to sincere repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10). It is also important to understand here that not all sadness is caused by the sin we commit. At times, sadness results from the fact that we are living in a sin-cursed world among fallen creatures that are fighting us.

What does the Scripture say about Sadness?

Just as we previously mentioned, not all sadness is caused by the sin we commit. There are times that sorrow and sadness are brought by the fallen creatures dwelling in this sin-cursed world as was the case of Job. The Scripture recounts how Job suffered great sorrow and sadness, through no fault of his own. Job’s wealth and 10 children were all taken away from him in a single day. That is, Job lose all his wealth and children at one time, a situation that left him sitting on an ash heap covered in boils and sores as great sadness filled his entire being (Job 1–3). To add to his deep sorrow and misery, his three “friends” came to comfort him by accusing him of having wronged or sinned against God. Why else, the three “friends” reasoned, would such great misery, sadness, and sorrow visit a man at one time?

However, God revealed to Job and his three “friends” that there are times that He causes or allows circumstances that cause sadness and sorrow in our lives for His Holy purposes and the accomplishment of His Perfect Will. There are even times that God doesn’t reveal or explain His reasons for such to us (Job 38–42). Whatever the case, we should always trust God because He never fails nor forsake His own. Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave nor forsake you.” Likewise, Psalm 18:30 says, “As for God, His way is perfect.” Because God’s ways are “perfect,” we can trust in Him that whatever He does, allows to happen, is perfect. Behold, God does all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

Facts about Sadness

The Scripture clearly tells us that God does all things for the good of those who love Him. This is a call for us to trust God even when our minds seem not to understand His ways. Even when our minds seem to perceive impossibilities everywhere, we should always remember that our minds are not God’s mind. Impossibility only exist in the human mind and not in God’s mind. In fact, there is just no way that we can expect to understand God’s mind perfectly. God Himself reminded us of this through Prophet Isaiah: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9). Behold, there are times when God’s perfect will includes sadness and sorrow for His children.

However, we can rejoice because God never tests us beyond our ability to bear. In addition, He always provides the way out from under the burden of sadness and sorrow we bear on a temporal basis (1 Corinthians 10:13). There is just no greater suffering that has ever been experienced like that of Jesus Christ, a “man of sorrows and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3). Behold, His life reflects a series of sorrows, from the cradle to the Cross. In His infancy, His life was in danger as Herod wanted to kill Him at all cost. This pushed Mary and Joseph to flee with Jesus into Egypt for safety (Matthew 2:19-20). Many tried killing Jesus before the accomplishment of His mission. All through His ministry, His heart was filled with sorrow He felt from the hardness and unbelief of men’s heart.

More facts about Sadness

Jesus’ ministerial life displayed the sorrow that He felt from the opposition of the religious leaders, and even from the unpredictability of His disciples, not to mention that from the temptation of Satan. The Scripture tells us that the night before His crucifixion, He was “exceedingly sorrowful unto death” as He contemplated the coming wrath and justice of God Almighty, Father of Creation which was to fall on Him as He died for His people. His agony was so intense that He sweated great drops of blood (Matthew 26:38). The Scripture makes us to understand that the greatest sorrow of His life was when on the Cross, the Father hid His face from the Son.

This caused Jesus to cry out in agony, “Why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). For sure, there is no degree of sadness experienced by any of us that can be compared to that of our savior. Having in mind that Jesus Christ was restored to the right hand of His Father after enduring great sorrow, we can be sure that through times of hardship, sorrow, sadness, persecution, and rejection, we are made to be more like Christ by God (Romans 8:29; Hebrews 12:10). As long as we dwell in this sin-cursed world, sorrow will always come our way. But the good news is that when Jesus Christ returns for His own, sadness will be replaced with joy (Isaiah 35:10). For the meantime, we should use our sorrow to glorify God (1 Peter 1:6-7) and dwell in the peace of Christ.
