What Does The Bible Say About Sin?

What Does The Bible Say About Sin? Sin is a frequent theme across the Scriptures. One might ask, “what is the definition of sin?” In simple terms, the Bible describes sin as transgression of the Law of God (1 John 3:4). In other words, sin is rebellion against God (Deuteronomy 9:7; Joshua 1:18). Sin had its beginning with Lucifer, who probably was the most beautiful and powerful of the angels. However, he was not content with his position. This ungrateful attitude of his led him to desire to be higher than God. And it was this desire that brought his downfall as it led to the beginning of sin (Isaiah 14:12-15). Lucifer was then renamed Satan. It was Satan who brought sin to the human race through Adam and Eve by tempting them with the same enticement, “you shall be like God.”

Genesis 3 clearly describes Adam and Eve’s rebellion against God and His Commands. From Adam and Eve, sin has been passed down through all the generations of mankind. Today, we who are all Adam’s descendants have inherited sin from him. That is, we are born in sinful natures. We come into this sin-cursed world with the original sin from Adam and Eve. It was with an understanding of this that Apostle Paul wrote saying in Romans 5:12 that through Adam sin entered the world, and as a result, death was passed to all men because “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). Through our first Ancestor, Adam, the inherent inclination to sin entered the world thereby making human beings sinners by nature. Adam’s inner nature was transformed as a result of his rebellion against God.

What Does The Bible Say About Sin?

Adam’s rebellion against God brought him spiritual death and depravity which would be passed on to all who came after him. We are sinners not because we sin; rather, we sin because we are sinners. The passed-on depravity from Adam onto all his descendants is referred to in theology as inherited sin. Likewise we inherit physical traits from our parents, we inherit our sinful natures from Adam. King David had an understanding of the fallen nature of humans and as a result lamented in Psalm 51:5: “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.” The second type of sin is what is referred to as imputed sin. It comes from the Greek word translated “imputed” which means “to take something that belongs to someone and credit it to another’s account.” It is frequently used in legal and financial settings.

Before the Mosaic Law was given, sin was not imputed to man, although men were still sinners because of inherited sin. But after the Law of Moses was given, sins committed in violation of the Law were imputed (accounted) to the Lawbreaker (Romans 5:13). Note that even before transgressions of the Law were imputed to men, the ultimate penalty of sin and its consequence (death) continued to reign (Romans 5:14). That is, all humans from Adam to Moses, were subject to death. Their subjection to death was not because of their sinful acts committed against the Mosaic Law (which they did not have), but because of their inherited sinful nature. After Moses who delivered the Law, humans were subject to death both because of inherited sin (original sin) and imputed sin from violating the Law of God.

What does the Scripture say about Sin?

From the Scriptures, we learned that God used the principle of imputation to benefit mankind when He imputed (attributed) the sin of believers to the account of Jesus Christ, who paid the penalty for that sin through His death on the Cross at Calvary. By imputing or attributing our sin to Jesus Christ, God treated Him as if He were a sin, although He was not. By so doing, God had Him die for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2). It is worth noting here that although sin was imputed on Jesus, He did not inherit it from Adam. Jesus Christ bore the penalty for sin, but He never became a sinner. Behold, His pure, holy, and perfect nature was untouched by sin. Even though Christ committed no sin, He was treated as if He were guilty of all the sins ever committed by mankind.

As a result of the price paid for sin by Christ who was perfect, God imputed His righteousness and perfect nature to believers. God credited our accounts with the righteousness of Christ, just as He had credited our sins to Christ’s account (2 Corinthians 5:21). The third type of sin is what we call personal sin, that which is committed on a daily basis by all human beings. Because we all inherited a sinful nature from Adam, we often commit personal sins. All those who have not placed their faith and hope in Jesus Christ must pay the penalty for these personal sins, as well as imputed and inherited or original sin. As for believers, they have been freed from the eternal penalty of sin. In Christ, they are free from the Fire of Hell and spiritual death. Such are those who have the power to resist sin.

Facts about Sin

The human nature that we obtained from Adam is that which makes us susceptible to omitting sins. But through faith, we are given new natures in Christ. That is, natures that can resits sin through the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. In Christ, we can chose to avoid personal sins because the Holy Spirit guides us. The Holy Spirit regularly sanctifies and convicts us of our sins each time that we commit them (Romans 8:9-11). This conviction is aimed at leading us through a Sincere Repentance. Each time that we confess our personal sins to God and ask for forgiveness for them, we are restored through Christ to perfect fellowship and communion with Him. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

It is important to understand here that all of us have been three times condemned due to inherited sin, imputed sin, and personal or individual sin. And as we all know, the only just punishment for sin is death (Romans 6:23). Note that we are not only pointing to physical death but to eternal death (Revelation 20:11-15). But for all who are in Christ, their inherited, imputed, and personal sins have been crucified on the Cross of Jesus Christ. Hence, through faith in Him as their Lord and Savior, they are saved from eternal condemnation and set apart to benefit from God’s special gift of Eternal Life. Note that obedience to the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ is part of believing in Him. Ephesians 1:7 says that in Christ, “we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.”

Are all sins equal to God?

The Bible seems to indicate that all sins are not equal. This is to say that there are degrees of sin, with some being more detestable to God than others (Deuteronomy 25:16; Proverbs 6:16-19). However, when it actually comes to the eternal consequences of sin, they are all the same. This is to say that every sin or act of rebellion leads to eternal condemnation. In the same light, Apostle Paul points to eternal death as a consequence of sin (Romans 6:23).

How can we judge if something is sin?

In summary, we can say that almost all sins are clearly written in the Bible. As example, we have the Ten Commandments that give us a clear picture of God’s Law and what He wants from us. Note that our piece of write-up on Bible verses about sin is aimed at pointing to most of the sins listed in the Bible. But how can we know that something is a sin when the Bible is not clear on it? When you are in doubt about whether something is sinful or not, you should always check what the Bible says. Luckily enough, the Bible provides us with general guidelines to judge when in doubt whether something is sinful or not. Below are the general guidelines or questions you should ask yourself when in doubt about the sinfulness of something:

  • What does the Bible say?
  • Is it pleasing to God?
  • Does it honor God’s name? (1 Corinthians 6:19–20; 1 Corinthians 10:31)
  • Does it reflect the presence of God through the Holy Spirit in us?
  • Is it against any of God’s command?
  • Is this a good thing for me and others?  (1 Corinthians 10:23-24)
  • Will it draw me closer to God or move me far from His presence?
  • Have I prayed about it and requested the Holy Spirit to lead me into the truth (John 14:16-17)

In all things, we must surrender our conscience before God to convict us through His indwelling Spirit in us about what is right and wrong in His eyes and not necessarily ours. Jesus says in John 14:16-17 – “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper , who will stay with you forever. He is the Spirit who reveals the truth about God. …

What is the unforgivable sin?

In Mark 3:29, Jesus says, “But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.” We can also read about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit in Matthew 12:31-32 and Luke 12:10.

Types of sins in summary

Original Sin – Original sin is the effect that Adam’s sin had on the whole of mankind. Due to the rebellion of Adam, everyone enters this world with a fallen nature. This is to say that the guilt of Adam’s sin was not only credited to him but it was credited to every human being who comes after him.

Imputed Sin – Just as we previously mentioned, imputed sin comes through the breaking of God’s Law. It destroys our standing before God and subjects us to His punishment.

Sins of omission and commission – Sins of omission and commission are those pointing to personal sins. In simple terms, we can say that a sin of commission is something that we carryout (commit) by the act of our own will against the command of God Almighty. On the other hand, a sin of omission is when we fail to do something commanded by God (omit) through a knowing act of our own will.

Mortal Sins and Venial Sins – Mortal and Venial sins are Roman Catholic terms. The Church regards venial sins as trivial offenses against God’s Laws. On the other hand, mortal sins are regarded by the Church as grievous offences in which the punishment is spiritual, eternal death.

Avoid such people.

1 John 3:6-10 – “No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. Psalm 5:1-6:10 – “To the choirmaster: for the flutes. A Psalm of David. Give ear to my words, O Lord; consider my groaning. Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray. O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch. Galatians 5:13-6:8 – “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. …

You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. …
