Bible Verses About Punishment

As Christians, it is important to know the Best Bible Verses About Punishment. The Scripture teaches us that we have all sinned and deserve punishment (Romans 3:23). Punishment comes because God is just and holy. In His presence, there is no sin. The reward of sin is death. And because we have all sinned, we deserve to die. It is with an understanding of this spiritual truth that Jesus speaks in Luke 13:1-3 – “At that time some people were there who told Jesus about the Galileans whom Pilate had killed while they were offering sacrifices to God. Jesus answered them, ‘Because those Galileans were killed that way, do you think that it proves that they were worse sinners than all the other Galileans? No indeed! And I tell you that if you do not turn from your sins, you will all die as they did.’

The truth is that our sinful natures prepared us for death but because God Almighty loved the world so much, He gave His beloved Son, Jesus Christ to die on our behalf on the cross at Calvary so that anyone who believes in His atonement sacrifice can live. Today, anyone who Believes, Sincerely Repents, and lives a life of obedience to the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ is set-apart to benefit from God’s special gift of Eternal Life. Such a person is free from the Lake of Fire that was prepared for the Eternal Condemnation of those who refuse to hear the message of Christ and turn from their evil ways in request of God’s grace and mercy. This eternal life we are talking about comes as a result of God’s grace (unmerited favor for mankind). On our own, we cannot obtain it but in Christ we can (John 14:6).

Bible Verses About Punishment

What does the Scripture say about punishment?

There is much that the Scripture says about punishment from God. It is rather unfortunate that when it comes to discussions on punishment for sin, many people hide behind or take advantage of God’s grace to speak things that do not hold in His Kingdom. A lot of false teachings resulting from misinterpretation of the Scriptures on God’s grace have mislead and derailed many. One of the Scriptures highly misinterpreted is Romans 8:1 which says, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Before jumping in happiness thinking that you can sin and get away with it, first ask yourself this question: “who are those in Christ?” Those who are in Christ are those whom He has approved for their loyalty in loving Him and being faithful to God’s commands.

Who told you that Jesus Christ came to make away with the teachings of the Prophets and the law of Moses? Let’s hear from Jesus Himself by reading from Matthew 5:17 – “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” Let’s read Matthew 23:1-3 – “Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples. ‘The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees are the authorized interpreters of Moses’ Law. So you must obey and follow everything that they tell you to do; do not, however, imitate their actions, because they don’t practice what they preach.” Matthew 5:17 says that Jesus fulfilled Moses’ Law and the teachings of the Prophet. Hence, it is said that there is no condemnation in those who are in Him (Romans 8:1). The question remains, who are those in Christ?

Who are those in Jesus Christ to whom there is no condemnation (Romans 8:1)?

Could the one in Christ be anyone who claims to be? Perhaps merely someone who goes to Church every Sunday? Or the one who obeys the commandments of Jesus Christ? Whatever the case, we are sure that those in Christ are those who are under God’s grace (unmerited favor). However, Apostle Paul calls on us not to abuse God’s grace by thinking that we can be in Christ and still get back doing the sinful things of the world. Romans 6:15 says, “Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the Law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not!” Remember that God’s grace saves those who believe in Jesus Christ (John 3:16). However, you must not let anyone to deceive you into thinking that believing in Jesus Christ is simply a matter of mere words from the mouth. Behold, believing is acting.

Believing in Jesus Christ obeying His commands or teachings. How can you say that you believe in Jesus Christ when you are not willing or able to follow His teachings? Let no one deceive you to think that you can be part of those in Christ who are free from condemnation when you are unable to hear His voice and follow His ways. James 1:22 says, “Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to His word; instead, put it into practice.” You are deceiving yourself by thinking that you are part of those who are in Christ whereas you have refused to obey His commands. We are to obey the Law of the Kingdom (James 2:8) and have it in mind that whoever is guilty of breaking one commandment is guilty of breaking them all (James 2:10).

What Jesus said about those who are in Him and He is in them

Jesus Himself said that those who accept His commandments and obey them are those who love, believe, and truly accept Him (John 14:21; 14:23). John 14:21 says, “Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. My Father will love those who love me; I too will love them and reveal myself to them.” Likewise John 14:23 says, “Jesus answered him, ‘Whoever loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and my Father and I will come to him and live with.” And as the Scripture teaches, Jesus is the stream of life-giving water (John 7:37-39) and only those who are in Him and He in them can drink from this stream. This makes it difficult to talk of Eternal Life without obedience to the teachings of Jesus Christ. For His teachings or words are Spirit and Life (John 6:63).

In addition, John 14:24 says, “Whoever does not love me does not obey my teaching. And the teaching you have heard is not mine, but comes from the Father, who sent me.” Remember that Jesus instructed His Apostles to tech everyone to observe everything that He commanded them. Let’s get what He said by reading from Matthew 28:19-20 – “Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.” Thus, it is by obeying all that Christ commanded that He approves you as His disciple and frees you from condemnation. It is important to understand that you cannot talk of being free from condemnation (Romans 8:1) when you refuse to obey His commands.
