Bible Verses About Serving Others

It is important to know about the Best Bible Verses About Serving Others. There is much that the Bible says about being a servant or operating in the servanthood. In fact, the central theme of the Bible is the servant of all – Jesus Christ. Mark 10:45 says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Likewise, when we give Jesus Christ His rightful place as Lord and Savior of our lives, His Lordship will be expressed in the way we relate with and serve others (Mark 9:35; 1 Peter 4:10; John 15:12-13). In the same light, our love for God is demonstrated by our degree of love for others.

2 Corinthians 4:5 says, “For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.” With Jesus Christ as the greatest leader of all time, we can say without doubt that true leadership is servanthood. Jesus Christ Himself clearly exemplified an attitude of servanthood. Philippians 2:6-7 says that Christ “who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant.” In the New Testament of the Bible, the five (5) words translated “ministry” generally refer to servanthood or service rendered in love. It is important to understand here that all believers have been called into ministry (Matthew 28:18-20). That is, we’ve all been called to be servants for the glory of God Almighty.

Bible Verses About Serving Others

What does the Scripture say about serving others?

Behold brethren, there is much that the Scriptures say about serving others. Living is Giving; all else is Boredom and Selfishness. There is a saying that: “Rank is given you to enable you to better serve those above and below you. It is not given for you to practice your idiosyncrasies” (General Bruce C. Clarke, USA, Ret). Hence, it’s our duty to serve others by serving Christ (Colossians 3:23-24). God the Father Almighty has served us by sacrificing His beloved Son as atonement for our sins (John 3:16). In the same light, we should serve others by proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel as God leads us (1 Thessalonians 1:5-6). Behold, those who deserve to be great in the Kingdom of God must be servants of all (Matthew 20:26).

In Mark 10:43-44, Jesus says that whosoever is great among you, shall be your minister and whosoever of you is the chiefest, shall be the servant of all. By comparing the word minister and servant, we realize that they convey a similar idea. The English word Minister is the Greek diakanos, which in simple terms mean the same root word for the English word deacon as found in 1 Timothy 3:10-13. It describes a person chosen from the congregation to serve others (Acts 6:1-7). As for the English word servant, it is derived from the Greek doulos, a word used to describe a bond servant or slave. Whatever, both are used interchangeably for minister, deacon, or servant. With this in mind, we can say that a servant is one who ministers to and serves others.

Facts about serving others

Contrary to the common believe among many today, a minister is not just one who leads the church or worship services. Note that God has called all of us to be ministers and servants. This results from the fact that our love for Christ is best demonstrated through services for others. During Biblical times, a bond servant was like a slave, but one who had chosen to remain with his master after being released due to the love that he has for his master (Exodus 21:2-6 and Deuteronomy 15:12-18). The Scripture tells us that a Hebrew slave was to be released after serving for seven years. However, due to his love for his master, he could chose to remain as a bond servant. In this case, the master will take him to the judges to make it legal so that the servant remains with his master forever.

It is this Old Testament practice that was alluded to when the Lord spoke to His disciples in John 15:9-17. Each disciple was called by Christ and they served Him voluntarily. But it later happened that Christ gave them a new commandment that they were no longer servants (verse 15, Greek word doulos), but friends, because of love. Here, we can say that the disciples were literal voluntary bond servants to the Lord. Christ offered this privilege to them out of His Love that was also the base of the Ultimate Sacrifice on the Cross at Calvary. The Scripture says that it was out of love that Christ decided to give His life to His friends (John 15:13) so that they would be free of all bondage (Hebrews 2:14-18). Today, anyone who Believes, Sincerely Repents, and obeys the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ is Saved and given Eternal Life.
