God was with King Solomon and blessed him with the ability to do and say things which no other king in Israel had ever done or said. However, his downfall began when he got married to the daughter of an Egyptian Pharaoh to seal a political alliance. In addition, King Solomon could not control his lust. Among his 700 wives and 300 concubines were many foreigners, a situation which angered God. It so happened that these foreigners lured king Solomon away from Yahweh and led him into the worship of false gods and idols.
King Solomon reigned for 40 years during which he did many great things but also succumbed to the temptations of lesser men. It is without doubt that this saying can’t be literally true for experience has taught us all the contrary. For sure, the old saying that “Money can’t buy happiness” still holds true. This leaves us wondering why King Solomon came up with the saying that “Money is the answer to all things”. For us to get the truth behind this saying, we’ll need to deeply understand the CONTEXT in which it was said. Let’s read Ecclesiastes 10:16-19 – “Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child, and our princes feast in the morning! Blessed are you, O land, when your king is the son of nobles, and your princes feast at the proper time—for strength and not for drunkenness! Because of laziness the building decays and through idleness of hands the house leaks. A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes merry; but money answers everything.”
Reread the verses above which are taken from the New King James Version of the Bible. You’ll realize the contrast in verses 16-18. It clearly points to the fact that a country with a noble king who rules with sobriety and strength is blessed, but a country with a lazy and drunken king will be completely ruined. Having this in mind, we’ll say without doubt that verses 19 reveals the attitude of a drunken ruler or king. Drunken rulers live for pleasure (“a feast is made for complete laughter “) and getting drunk for them is seen as “wine making merry”.
