The threefold purpose of bread in the Bible
1. God said Adam and his offspring would work and sweat for bread
The Biblical book of Genesis tells us that when God sent Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden, He said Adam would work and sweat for bread. This led to the necessity of growing grain for food to survive. In other words, we all need bread for sustenance. As Adam’s offspring, we are not excluded from what God told Adam. Also, our hunger is such that it regularly reminds us that on our own, we can do nothing. It further reminds us that we all depend on God alone for survival. For it is God who created food. The Bible tells us that He blesses the ground to produce for His creatures.
2. Bread draws us together in fellowship
Over the centuries, bread has been a great means of drawing people together. The Scriptures tell us that Abraham used bread for hospitality when he shared bread with his three visitors (Genesis 18). Abraham himself enjoyed the bread served to him by Melchizedek (Genesis 14:17-24). The Jewish tradition includes breaking bread at the beginning of a meal with the words “Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who bringest forth bread from the earth.” We read about Jesus Christ giving thanks to God and breaking bread on several occasions in the New Testament. 1. Bread and Hospitality
It is by loving, caring, and welcoming others that we develop relationships. Here, hospitality has to do with serving and caring for another person. In restaurants, we are served bread first as a sign of welcoming and generosity of bounty. Abraham did not only offer bread to his visitors, but he instructed his wife to use the finest flour to make the bread (Genesis 18:6). Behold, he offered his guests the best food. Also, David continued to honor the memory of his dear friend Jonathan with continual hospitality to his son Mephibosheth. David says in 1 Samuel 9:7 that he would show him kindness and Mephibosheth would eat bread at his table continually. We should give our best to others and show hospitality to everyone that we meet. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it (Hebrews 13:2).
2. Grain offerings and sacrifices
The Scriptures tell us that God commanded the priests to make sacrifices and offerings for the people. These included grain offerings (Leviticus 2 and 6). Oil and incense accompanied the grain that the priest lifted up. In addition, they prepared cakes of grain and oil and offer them up in chunks on the altar.
