Bible Verses About Gossip

There are many Bible Verses About Gossip worth knowing by Christians. Gossiping is a sin as pointed out by the following Bible Verses On Gossip. Knowing them will keep you on the safe side as you improve your relationship with God. Gossip is a way of talking about someone(s) behind his/her back that creates or portrays a negative image about the one(s) being talked about. The Bible clearly condemns and points out the dangers and damages involved in gossiping (In support of this, you can check Proverbs 20:19). The reasons for which the Bible speaks against gossip are quite numerous. For example, gossiping breaks trust between people and up to some extent create enmity. Proverbs 16:28 says, “A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.” Behold, Gossip is not a characteristic of God and nothing good can come out of it (Proverbs 13:3).

It is important to understand here that gossip is not just about doing the talking. It is rather easier for many to withhold from talking about others on several occasions, but it is pretty hard to overcome the temptation to listen to someone else dishing up the latest juicy details about others. Truth be told, listening to it is just as bad as actually doing the gossip. Let’s support this by reading from Proverbs 17:4 – “Evil people listen to evil ideas, liars listen to lies.” It is quite easy to identify a gossip especially when the content is harsh and intended to harm the image of the one being spoken of. James 4:11 and Colossians 3:8 clearly command us not to slander others. What is said can’t be unsaid. Hence, if you are not sure about the truth, better keep silent.

Bible Verses About Gossip

What the Scriptures say about Gossip

In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word translated as “gossip” can be defined as “one who reveals secrets, one who goes about as a talebearer or scandal-monger.” In simple terms, we can say that a gossiper is someone who has privileged information about others and proceeds to reveal that information to those who have no business knowing it. We are able to distinguish gossip from sharing information in two way: intent and the type of information shared. Gossipers are fueled with the intent of building themselves up or making themselves more important or to appear perfect while making others look bad, wicked, and evil. Such people turn to exalt themselves as some kind of repositories of knowledge.

As with respect to the type of information being shared, gossipers find happiness in speaking about the faults and failures of others. We can as well say that they find joy in revealing potentially embarrassing or shameful details about the lives of other people without their concern, knowledge or approval. Behold, even if they mean no harm, it is still gossip. For God has commanded us to be our brother’s care taker and not his judge nor source of pain and sorrow. Apart from loving God, the second most important commandment is for us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves (Mark 12:31). And for sure, if we truly love our neighbors as ourselves, we won’t be spreading embarrassing or shameful details about them. This is because none of us will be happy to hear others spreading such things about us.

Facts you should know about Gossiping

In Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans, he clearly reveals the sinful nature and lawlessness of mankind, pointing out how God poured His wrath on those who rejected His Laws. This was because the people had turned away from God’s instructions and guidance. This made Him to hand them over to their sinful natures. The list of sins mentioned by Apostle Paul includes gossips and slanderers (Romans 1:29b-32). This scripture reveals how serious the sin of gossip is thereby characterizing gossipers among those who are under God’s wrath. Apostle Paul further calls on widows to stay away from gossiping. According to 1 Timothy 5:12-13, these women are described as “gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to.” You might be asking why this precision?

It is simply because women generally turn to spend more time in each other’s homes, they all hear and observe critical situations that can be distorted, especially when these situations are experienced repetitively. It is in this light that Apostle Paul wrote against idleness. Behold, idle hands are the Devil’s workshop, and God clearly cautions against entertaining an idle lifestyle. Let’s hear what the wise said in Proverbs 20:19 – “A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man [or woman] who talks too much.” Truth be told, women are not the only ones who have been found guilty of gossip. Just anyone can engage in gossip by repeating something that was said in confidence. Behold, those who guard their tongues keep themselves from calamities (Proverbs 21:23).

Types of Gossip

1. Slander (Colossians 3:8; James 4:11)

Colossians 3:8 – “But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.”
James 4:11 – “Brothers, do not slander one another.” Slander is defined as spreading rumors or lies about a person to cause damage purposely.

2. Dishing (Proverbs 20:19; James 5:9)

Proverbs 20:19 – “A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man [or woman] who talks too much.”
James 5:9 –Don’t grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!” In simple terms, “Dishin’ the dirt” means sharing the “juicy info” you learned about someone. Perhaps the intent is not to cause harm but by keeping it alive, it will continue spreading and tainting the image of the person concerned.

3. Rumors (Proverbs 13:3)

Proverbs 13:3 – “He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.” Rumoring has to do with hearing something that is not good, and that hasn’t been confirmed true, yet you proceed to tell someone or ask someone for more info. Behold, the rumor mills turns and turns and before you realize, the gossip has spread like bush fire.

4. Backbiting (Proverbs 25:23; Psalm 101:5)

Proverbs 25:23 –  “The north wind brings forth rain, and a backbiting tongue, angry looks.”
Psalm 101:5 – “Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy; No one who has a haughty look and an arrogant heart will I endure.” Backbiting is a flavor of gossip that involves speaking spiteful or slanderous words about another person who is not currently present at the moment of discussion and can do nothing in defense. Such is more of secretive but highly detested by God Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth.

5. Not-really-joking jokes (Proverbs 21:24; Proverbs 22:10; Psalm 1:1)

Proverbs 21:24 – “Mockers are proud and haughty; they act with boundless arrogance.” Furthermore, verse 9:8 says, “A mocker resents correction; he will not consult the wise.”
Proverbs 22:10 – “Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended.
Psalm 1:1 – “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.” This type of gossip has to do with taking the truth and turning it into a joke about someone in a way that leads others into asking questions about their character. It is really a more passive way to spread gossip.

6. Planting Seeds (James 3:5; Proverbs 16:28)

James 3:5 – “Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
Proverbs 16:28 – “A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends.” The Bible clearly tells us that we reap what we sow. This type of gossip is said in such a way as to make the listener question or assume something about the character of the person being spoken about.

7. Whispered Innuendo (Proverbs 26:20; Luke 12:3)

Proverbs 26:20 – “For lack of wood the fire goes out, And where there is no whisperer, contention quiets down.”
Luke 12:3 –  “What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.” These are subtle insinuations that are able to mislead others into thinking wrongly, especially if the conclusions are based on gossipy hunches.

8. Got-This-All-Wrong Gossip (James 4:17)

James 4:17 – “Anyone, then, who know the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” This type of gossip is that which a person assumes that he/she probably got it wrong, but still proceeds to spreading it anyway, simply because it is still touching on some points that could be true. In most cases, it usually starts with something like this: I probably got this all wrong, but apparently…

God hates all these gossips. Hence, if you are convinced of being guilty, Sincerely Repent and start obeying the Key teachings of Jesus Christ. Doing this will locate you in God’s mercy and favor as you are led by the Holy Spirit to Eternal Life far from the Lake of Fire.
