There are many Bible Verses About Pentecost worth knowing by all followers of Jesus Christ who desire to walk in the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit. By studying the Old Testament, we discover that Pentecost was one of the Jewish feast days. However, they didn’t actually call it Pentecost. Pentecost as we call it today is rather its Greek name. The Jews called it the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks. This feast is mentioned five places within the first five books of the Old Testament. That is, it is mentioned in Exodus 23, Exodus 24, Leviticus 16, Numbers 28, and Deuteronomy 16. This feast represented the celebration of the early weeks of harvest. Note that in Palestine, there were two harvests each year. The early harvest from their land came during the months of May and June while the final harvest came in the fall.

Pentecost was actually the celebration of the beginning of the early wheat harvest. Having this in mind, we can say with a high degree of certainty that Pentecost always fell sometime during mid-May or sometimes in early June. It is important to note that there were several observances, festivals, and celebrations that took place before Pentecost. For example, there was the Passover, there was Unleavened Bread, and there was the Celebration or Feast of FirstFruits. The beginning of the barley harvest marked the celebration of the Feast of FirstFruits. With these pieces of information, it becomes easy to figure out the date of Pentecost. As per the Old Testament, all who join the celebration of the Feast of FirstFruits, and beginning with that day, they were to count off 50 days. In this light, the fiftieth day would be the Day of Pentecost.

From the Old Testament, we can deduce that the Feast of FirstFruits is the beginning of the Barley Harvest, and Pentecost the beginning of the Wheat Harvest. Since Pentecost was always 50 days after FirstFruits, and knowing that 50 days equals 7 weeks, it always came a “week of weeks” later. Having understood this, the Jews decided to either call it the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks.

What does the Scripture say about Pentecost?

The Scriptures say much about the Day of Pentecost. It is important for us to start by getting it once and or all that Pentecost is significant in both the Old and New Testaments. “Pentecost” is actually the Greek name for a festival referred to in the Old Testament as the Feast of Weeks (Leviticus 23:15; Deuteronomy 16:9). This Greek word means “Fifty (50)” and refers to the fifty days that have elapsed since the wave offering of Passover. The Feast of Weeks was a celebration that marked the end of the grain harvest. Of greater interest is the way it is used in the book of Joel and Acts. Pentecost marks the beginning of the Church age from an objective look back to Joel’s prophecy (Joel 2:28–32) and forward to the last words of Jesus Christ that promised the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).

Acts 2:1–3 happens to be the only Biblical reference to the actual events of the Day of Pentecost. Behold, Pentecost is reminiscent of the Last Supper; in both instances, the disciples are recorded as being gathered in the house for what proves to be an important event. The Last Supper was one through which the disciples witnessed the end of the Messiah’s Earthly Ministry as He commanded them to remember Him after His death till He returns. The narrative comes to conclusion that three thousand (3,000) souls were convicted by the Holy Spirit through Apostle Peter’s testimony to join the Christian fellowship. 1. The Holy Spirit filled the Church with Power and convinced 3,000 people from the audience of Peter to accept his testimony and follow Christ

We can read a detailed account of this in Acts 2. It reports that after Jesus ascended into heaven, His disciples were gathered together for the Feast of Harvest (aka Pentecost), and the Holy Spirit “filled the whole house where they were sitting” (Acts 2:2). In addition, Acts 2:4 says, “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” This strange and supernatural occurrence drew a large crowd, and Peter stood up under the influence of the Holy Spirit as he invited them to believe, repent, and get baptized so as to experience the light of salvation that comes from Christ.

By pilgrim festival, we mean that according to the Jewish Law, all the adult Jewish men would come from wherever they were living to gather in Jerusalem in order to personally partake in this celebration.

2. Pentecost was a holiday

The Festival of Harvest (aka Pentecost) was a holiday. That is, school was out, the shops were closed, and the conditions were united to make it a party time.

3. There were certain celebrations and sacrifices and offerings which were prescribed in the Law of Moses for the Day of Pentecost

On this day, the High Priest was to take two loaves of freshly baked wheat bread and offer them before the Lord. The wheat bread was freshly made from the newly harvested wheat.
