The Bible Verses About Light are there to remind us about the personality and nature of Christ. The phrase “Light of the World” (Greek: φῶς τοῦ κόσμου Phṓs tou kósmou), was clearly used by Jesus Christ to describe Himself and His disciples in the New Testament. This phrase which is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew and John is closely related to the parables of Salt and Light, and Lamp under a bushel. Remember that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth and said let there be light. The light of life from the very beginning of creation was Jesus Christ. Behold, Jesus is the light before the light. The Light in us is the light of Christ, the very light of the Holy Spirit which is the light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4).

In a debate with the Jews, Jesus says in John 8:12 that, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” During the miracle of healing the blind at birth, Jesus Christ also pointed to the fact that He is the light of the world. Let’s support this by reading from John 9:5 – “When I am in the world, I am the Light of the World.” It was out of love that God gave His only Son, Jesus Christ to be sacrificed as the lamb that takes away the sins of those who believe in Him (John 3:16). Today, anyone who Believes, Sincerely Repents, and starts obeying the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ is offered Eternal Life and saved from the Lake of Fire. He/she becomes the light of the world just like the Master, Jesus Christ.

What the Scriptures say about the Light

Jesus Christ Himself is the light of life (John 8:12), and the light of the world (John 9:5). Christ also refers to His disciples as the light of the world as we can read from Matthew 5:14 – “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” This is so because Christ is in them and they are in Christ. Hence, they are simply reflecting what they are through Christ. As followers of Christ, we’ve been called to live our lives just as He did with His.

1 John 1:5-6 says, “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” Hence, if no light shines from your life, it is either you have no relationship with Jesus Christ or you are bringing dishonor (sinning) to His name through your thoughts, words, and actions. To have the light shine from you is to strive for a righteous life through Christ. It is sad to hear someone proclaiming Jesus Christ as Lord but still living a sinful life. Such brings disrepute to Christ and the Gospel. In short it is more of a stumbling block for unbelievers. Such is not convincing that Christ has the power to change lives. But by following the steps of Christ, we should preach both by actions and words.
