Remember that there is life in God’s Son, Jesus Christ. Through a Sincere Repentance and a heart ready to obey the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ, we find mercy and favor before God. What the Scriptures say about Money

What is Money?

In simple terms, money is a medium of exchange. That is, it is an agreed upon item which you can use to transact, make a purchase, pay off a debt, or trade. In most cases, the medium of exchange differs in many countries. The use of money makes it easier for you to get what you want rather than swapping your pet dog for a piece of bread. The one thing that you should know about money is that it is amoral. Understand once and for all that money doesn’t have life and cannot act on its own. Money can neither do good things nor commit crimes. That is, money is neither bad or good. Money can only do what you tell it to do. It is important to understand here that money is not the root of all evil but the love of money is (1 Tim. 6:10).

Why does the Church talk so much about money?

Truth be told, the church talks so much about money. Hence, one might want to know why. Behold, there are two good reasons on why the Church talks so much about money. The first reason why the Church talks so often about money is because God talks often about money. Have a look at the following statistics to better understand what we are saying:

  • 16 out of 38 of Jesus’ parables have to do with money and possessions
  • Almost 25% of Jesus’ words in the New Testament have to do with Biblical Stewardship
  • 1 out of 10 verses in the Gospels deal with money
  • There are over 2,000 scriptures dealing with tithing in the Bible, possessions, and money in the Bible, which happens to be twice as many as faith and prayer combined

The second good reason why the Church talks so much about money is because money is frequently discussed in the Bible. Many verses in the Bible talk about money. This is because there is a correlation between the way we handle our money and Christian faith. Behold, when it comes to money, we’ll either worship wealth or worship with our wealth. Reread this again and you’ll find out that there is a great difference between the two. Moving from the seduction of success to the lure of lust, you can be sure that there are many things in the world that will vie for your affection and devotion. Among all, the most significant idol you’ll see is money  (Matt. 6:24). God speaks so often about money because He knows that we’ll be faced with the temptation of valuing money more than Him.

Nine (9) things the the Bible says about money that you should know

1. God owns everything (Exodus 19:5; Psalm 24:1)

It is important to understand here that God does not talk about money because He is broke and needs a helping hand. The truth is far from it. Get it into your mind once and for all that God owns everything on Earth and in Heaven. Let’s support this spiritual truth by reading from Exodus 19:5 – “Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine.” Psalm 24:1 – “The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,

2. Money is about discipleship (Philippians 4:11-12)

Up to some extent, we can perceive money as a faith strengthening tool. God uses it as a way to help us live and love like Jesus. Regardless of how little or how much money you may have, God is actively at work in your life through the circumstances that you are going through. In simple terms, God is building or leading you to a deeper trust in Him. He is conditioning you to relay on Him and not on your strength or possessions. Let’s support this by reading from Philippians 4:11-12 – “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.”

Whatever your situation, whether you are swimming in financial struggles or financial abundance, just give thanks to God because He is in control. Never doubt His ability to see you through in any circumstance or situation. Trust in Him with a heart of thanksgiving and He will certainly do beyond your expectations. You will live to give glory to His name and talk to others about His goodness. Thank Him for what He has done and He will do exceedingly more.

3. Actively worship God with your money (1 Samuel 2:7)

The best Bible verses about money call on us to be careful, to guard our heart from the love of money, and not to be fooled with money. If one is not careful, he/she can easily put their hope in money. We can hold money in our hands or have it deposited in our bank accounts. Hence, we can feel the weight of its absence or actually possess a sense of self-sufficiency when we have it in abundance. It is important to note that when it comes to money, wealth people are not the only people who will be tempted.

Regardless of how much money you have, you’ll be tempted to sin in many ways. That’s why you should rather place your hope in God than placing it in whatsoever source that generates you income. Behold, God owns everything and He is willing and ready to provide you with all that you need to make a living. Hence, instead of worshiping money, we should rather choose to worship God with our money. Let’s support our message by reading from 1 Samuel 2:7 – “The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts.”

4. Be contented with what you have (Philippians 4:11-13)

We know how difficult it is to be contented – with your work, with yourself, with your family, and with your situation. We are all bombarded with a slew of images and messages everywhere that we go that fuel or entice us to pursue something “better.” From wanting a bigger house, new car, or covering a promotion at work, we live in a world that encourages us not to be satisfied with what we have and with who we are. Although discontentment may not sound as a big deal on the surface, it is a subtle sin that leads us to desire more than what God has blessed us with, or fuels us with the desire to want something completely different. We have to fight discontentment and be contented with God’s blessings in our lives. We have to learn what it takes to be satisfied in Christ.

However, discontentment leaves us lacking and empty-handed at the end. That is, instead of correctly handling what we have, we drop it off running for what we might end up not having. One who dwells in a state of discontentment is more likely to be tempted into taking an unnecessary debt, cheating on your spouse, or making unwise decisions at work in an attempt to get ahead. Let’s support our message by reading from Philippians 4:11-13 – “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

5. Get that money (Proverbs 10:22)

As a general principle and in the light of God’s command, you need to work to earn money. However, a good number of people are unable to work for several reasons. Whether it is an illness, or physical handicap, chances are high that you won’t be able to fully work to obtain gainful employment. In order to support people who are unable to provide for themselves; in general, God has put in place three different layers of support:

  • The family
  • His Church
  • The state

Without necessarily getting into the details of Biblical view on wealth and poverty, we do find lots of examples and commands in the Bible about taking care of the poor, orphans, and widows. Just as Prophet T.B. Joshua puts it, “they are fatherless so that you can be their father,” “they are in need so that you can be their benefactor,” “they are lonely so that you can be their companion.” On the other hand, we also observe several commands in the Bible to work hard and diligently. Because we are created in the image and likeness of God, we are hardwired to work, to create. Always remember that God has commanded us to work. It is by working that He blesses our efforts and provides our needs. Let’s support this by reading from Proverbs 10:22 – “The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

6. Kill greed in your heart (Proverbs 28:25)

Greed is a sin. It is something bad that all of us will have to fight against in this life. Apostle Paul calls on us in Col. 3:5 that we should “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.” Chances are high that you might be thinking that you don’t have a greed problem. But let me ask you a few questions to actually see whether you are free from greed. Are you satisfied with how much money you make? Does you desire for money and wealth choke out your interest for God and the things of His Kingdom? Do you want to purchase more things? Any sign of these things within you is pointing to greed.

Luckily enough, we have the Anointed Gospels that show-up as an antidote for greed. We should find our contentment in Jesus Christ and fight against every trace of greed in our lives. Let’s support our message by reading from Proverbs 28:25 – “A greedy man stirs up strife, but the one who trusts in the LORD will be enriched.”

7. Be mindful of debt (Proverbs 22:7)

Chances are high that you are swimming in financial debts. A research which was conducted back by the end of 2017 revealed that total household debt in the United States amounted to $13.15 trillion. Behold, debt is so common in the United States and many other parts of the world. It is also important to understand here that debt is a major or leading cause of financial stress in the world. That is why it important to get God’s perspective about debts so that you can rightly manage your finances. This leads us to what the Bible says about debt:

  • God does not forbid debt
  • God does highly caution against getting into debt
  • Getting into debt is generally a bad thing to do

Although God does not forbid debt, He cautions us against it. That is, getting into debts is not God’s wish for His children. That’s why you should be highly cautious when you consider taking debt. It is also important to seek advice from a Christian Financial Advisior. Go for Christian financial counselling or godly advice about your financial situation. This will keep you from further looking for credit loan no guarantor, or bad credit loan no guarantor. Let’s support our message by reading from Proverbs 22:7 – “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.”

8. Rightly manage your money in a way that pleases God (Proverbs 10:4)

If you’ve been wondering what was the best way to manage money, go for the way of managing money that pleases God. Make a plan and work towards its realization. The book of Proverbs calls on us to bring our plans before God ans ask for His blessings. So bring your plans before God who will bless and make them successful. In making your financial plan, you need to answer the following questions:

  • What is your total income?
  • How much do you need to tithe?
  • What is the amount of money that you need to save and invest?
  • What are your monthly expenses and debt repayments?

Below are a few questions which you should consider after figuring out your total income and expenses:

  • What cost can you reduce?
  • How can you live below your means and prioritize saving for rainy days and investment?
  • What are the ways you can give money to your Church or non-profit organizations?
  • How can you pay off all debts and prevent future debts?
  • How can you help the poor and the widow?
  • What are the best ways to save and grow your wealth?

In all things, always give thanks to God who blesses us with all kinds of physical and spiritual blessings. Let’s support our message by reading from Proverbs 10:4 – “A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

9. Trust in God for provision (Matthew 6:31-34)

Matthew 6:31-34 – “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

Anyone who has little money will be focused on resolving little issues. Anyone with much money is more likely to have lots of high money demanding issues to resolve. So why do we dwell in worry? Below are some Biblical facts to help you put your trust in God to provide your needs:

  • There is no promise in the Bible that being a good Christian will always lead to picking up a good job, making wealth, and living a financial free life
  • You can be poor yet a candidate of heaven
  • God is aware of your poverty and He will not leave you without a blessing
  • It is not God’s will for you to worry about money
  • God wants you to know that life is more about your relationship with Him and not money
  • Our heavenly Father is more than willing and ready to bless all who trust in Him
