Why Did Jesus Talk So Much About Agriculture?

A good tree doesn’t produce bad fruits…consider a grain of wheat…a sower went out to sow…in story after story, Jesus Christ made use of scenes from everyday farm life to explicitly illustrate His points about the gospel and the kingdom of God. This should not be too surprising because most of Jesus’ listeners were farmers themselves or, at least, very familiar with farming. And as such, it was easier and more effective, to point to a farmer in the field, the numerous plants growing around them, or the shepherds tending nearby flocks and reference the heart of God or another gospel truth about God’s kingdom. Notice that the illustrations that Jesus needed to make His points were literally all around Him. For a long time, these stories worked without much thought or explanation. Many people were farmers or at least very familiar with farming.

Today, more and more people are moving away from rural areas where farming is highly practiced and into cities characterized by industrialization. Fewer and fewer of us grew up on farms, and thus, we miss a lot of subtle points Jesus is making in some of His stories. Farmers work throughout the year, regardless of the weather. Animals have to be fed, crops have to be watered and fertilized, and it doesn’t matter how the farmer feels on that particular day. The work has to be done. Success in life requires hard work. Every day, just like the farmer, we must show up and do the work. On a daily basis, relationships have to be enhanced. Weeds have to be removed, the land watered, and fertilizer added. Neglect a relationship and just like a field left unplowed, weeds will overrun everything and whatever was planted will die.

More Facts

Farming takes time. One can’t speed up nature. Cows, like people, reproduce in about nine (9) months. You can’t speed that up. Corn takes anywhere from 90 to 100 days to be ready to be harvested. Nature takes its own time. Many factors can control the time it takes for the crop to ripen. The amount of rain, the cool of the nights, the warmth of the days, soil conditions, insects, and many others. On some days, the only thing the farmer can do is sit, wait, and hope for the best. As such, patience is a required virtue for a farmer. Likewise, patience is a needed virtue for life. Many things in life take time just as farming takes time. The smart farmer knows when the moment is ready. So does the wisest of us in living.

Weeds grow everywhere and all of the time. The farmer has something to do every day. The unexamined field soon becomes unusable. Likewise, the unexamined life soon becomes useless for service in the kingdom. No wonder Jesus talked so much about farming. The day-to-day chores, tasks, and attention required to the smallest details made agriculture an unforgettably rich metaphor for Jesus and His teachings. They are a good reminder of what is required from us every day of our own lives. The animals have to be cared for. All the fields have to be checked. The work is never done. And it’s never done for us. Luke 9:23 says, Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” As Christians, we have to be loving, faithful, prayerful, diligent, patient, forgiving, and merciful at all times.
