Bible Verses About Actions

Discover the Bible Verses About Actions. Behold, our actions speak. In fact, our actions speak louder than our words. Thus, our works are words. The question is what are they saying? Are our actions in line with what we believe and speak with our mouths? The old adage, “actions speak louder than words,” is true because, as another adage says, “words are cheap.” Therefore, when it comes to our faith if our words and actions are saying different things we must look to our actions for the truth. This is what Apostle James encourages us to do in James 2:18, and equally what the Apostle John essentially tells us in 1 John 3:18. Likewise, Jesus Christ says this in John 10, where once again Jesus Christ had proclaimed Himself to be God (John 10:27–30), and once again the Jews picked up stones (John 10:31).

In John 10:32, Jesus asked the Jews a revealing question: “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” They said they didn’t want to stone Him for His works but for His words (John 10:33). So, Jesus replied saying, “If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me [i.e. my words]; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, …” (John 10:37–38). Jesus was saying that His works are also words. Jesus had said this earlier in the conversation: “[The] Jews gathered around him and said to him, ‘How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.’ Jesus answered them, ‘I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me.’” (John 10:24–25).

Bible Verses About Actions

Behold, the Bible says a lot about actions. Jesus Christ, the God-Man, lived His earthly life in perfect integrity. His words and works were always saying the same thing. He was the incarnate Word of God (John 1:1, 14) who always did what was pleasing to the Father (John 8:29). Being “the founder and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2), Jesus Christ showed us how faith works. His trust in the Father was constantly being proclaimed through the things He did. His thoughts, words, and actions were in line with His Father’s Sovereign Will. Faith, by its very nature, produces action. Behold, it’s intrinsic. Each of us is wired to feel and act in accordance with what we believe to be true. We cannot help it. This is a universal human phenomenon.

Every human being lives by faith. The atheist who says he doesn’t go for that faith nonsense probably because he believes in science has a category of confusion. What such a person really means is that he/she puts his/her faith in hypotheses advanced by non-religious scientists with regard to the origin of the universe and questions of ultimate meaning. Since these are things he/she cannot scientifically verify, and which he/she largely learned from others who he/she considers authoritative, he/she too has a “conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). None of us can help working out his/her faith. We cannot help doing what we believe. It is for this reason that Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Likewise, Apostle Paul defined his mission as bringing about “the obedience of faith” among the Gentiles (Romans 1:5).

What Are Your Actions Saying?

Brethren, if we want to know what we really believe, we must look at our actions. For sinful humans whose selfish pride so frequently grabs for control of our tongue, the words of our mouth can be unreliable. But the words of our works speak with a powerful, and sometimes painful, eloquence about what we believe. What are your actions saying about you? What do you do when you are alone? How do you react when you are disappointed or challenged? Also, how willing are you to serve obscurely? These are exposing and convicting questions. Behold, Jesus Christ had perfect consistency between His words and actions. None of the rest of us has this yet. However, as Christians, it’s our duty to follow in the footsteps of Christ our Savior. Our works reveal where our faith is. Jesus told us that a “tree is known by its fruit” (Matthew 12:33).

Do Actions Really Speak Louder Than Words?

The phrase “actions speak louder than words” has a rich and lengthy history. As a matter of fact, it has become a modern-day proverb. However, those exact words are not found in the Bible, so, is the proverb true? Do actions really speak louder than words? The answer is both yes and no. To reveal the view from both sides we will look at the history of the proverb, what the Bible has to say about actions and words, and what really matters to God. The origin of the proverb “actions speak louder than words” dates all the way back to the 1550s. It began with different wording and has changed throughout time. This phrase was first recorded by a French writer named Michel de Montaigne. His exact words were “Saying is one thing and doing is another.

Over a century later (1628), an Englishman named J. Pym wrote a variation of the proverb: “A word spoken in season is like an Apple of Gold set in Pictures of Silver, and actions are more precious than words. Another century passed before A.M. Davis penned another variation in 1736. He wrote in a letter titled “Melancholy State of Province” in Colonial Currency: “Actions speak louder than words and are more to be regarded.” Mark Twain (1835 – 1910) penned down his own version as well. He puts it like this: “Action speaks louder than words but not nearly as often.” Behold, all these forms of the proverb illustrate a stark difference between words and actions, giving weight to actions.

What The Bible Says About “Actions Speak Louder Than Words”

The Bible says much about actions and words. In Matthew 21, Jesus Christ uses a story to illustrate how actions speak louder than words. Jesus’ story is about two sons whose father told them to go and work in his vineyard. One said no, he would not go. The other said yes. However, the one who said no changed his mind and went to work, and the one who had said yes, did not go. Jesus Christ ends the story with a revealing question, “Which of the two did the will of his father?” Truthfully speaking, the son who said yes but did not follow through failed to love and honor his father. Apostle John puts it this way: “My little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth” (1 John 3:18).

In the same light, Titus delivers a stern word about actions that contradict what is said: “They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him” (Titus 1:16). This is referred to as hypocrisy (behavior that contradicts what a person claims to believe). Hypocrisy has a spell that repels. “Your actions speak so loudly, I cannot hear what you are saying” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). Apostle James addresses this “words and actions thing” by connecting it to faith because it takes faith to obey God, “For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without actions is also dead” (James 2:26). A look at these Scriptures makes us understand how our actions sometimes betray us.

What Matters Most To God?

Brethren, going through what we’ve written so far may sound as if actions are the end-all, but that isn’t true. Consider the words of Jesus Christ regarding a certain widow’s actions and others who had the same “action.” Mark 12:41-44 says, Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything — all she had to live on”

In this case, we see that both gave offerings but instead of the action being the focus, Jesus saw into the widow’s heart in confirmation with the Scripture that says, “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). Brethren, let the love of God and that of our neighbors lead in everything that we do. Apostle Paul says in Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” In the same light, 1 John3:17-18 says, “If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion — how can God’s love be in that person? Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”

And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”

Bible Verses About Hollywood

Discover the Bible Verses About Hollywood. The translation meaning of Hollywood in Greek is Χόλιγουντ, in Hebrew is הוליווד, and its meaning in Latin is Hollywood. Behold, God may have forewarned us about Hollywood in the Bible. Even though Hollywood did not exist in the days of creation, the spirit of Hollywood has always been. Brethren, Hollywood is more than a city in California. The word Hollywood has become synonymous with glitz and glamor, as well as the extravagant lifestyles and hedonistic philosophies of movie stars and celebrities. It is without a doubt that Hollywood exerts a vast influence on popular culture in the west and around the world. The term Hollywood is often used to refer to anything pertaining to the entertainment industry, even though other cities such as New York and Nashville contribute to it as well.

Truthfully speaking, most movies produced in Hollywood are secular and are arranged to promote lavish materialism, adultery, sensuality, self-worship, and adultery. And even worse is the fact that some Hollywood movies exhibit a blatant anti-God bias. The Lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16) abound in the movies Hollywood produces. Having said this, it’s clear that going to the theater can be a dangerous move for believers who want to keep their minds pure. 2 Timothy 2:22-24 says, “Run from temptations …” At this point, we are more likely to ask ourselves these questions; should Christians boycott Hollywood? Should Christians be unthinking believers of whatever entertainment comes out? Or should they find a middle path? A good understanding of what the Bible says will provide us with answers to these questions.

Bible Verses About Hollywood

Brethren, what, exactly, attracts us to Hollywood? Worth taking note of is the fact that part of Hollywood’s appeal is the covetousness it champions. From every newsstand and television set, we are told that we should want what the celebrities have. Headlines such as “America Wants to Know!” or “The Life Every Woman Dreams Of” scream at us from checkout lines, dropping in us the message that we cannot possibly be content if we are not following celebrities. And it’s rather sad that millions of the discontent gobble it up and, in their attempt to live like their idols, become indebted, anorexic, or promiscuous. With this in mind, we are more likely to say that Hollywood is in the business of creating idols and foisting them upon us whether we want them or not.

The Almighty God tells us a lot about the sin of covetousness through the Bible. He included in it His Top Ten List (Exodus 20:17). Likewise, Jesus Christ said, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions” (Luke 12:15). It is important to understand that covetousness is a thief that steals joy, peace, and contentment – qualities God wants His children to have in abundance (Galatians 5:22; 1 Timothy 6:6). For a Christian to become enamored with the lavish lifestyle of the rich and famous is to break God’s tenth commandment and forfeit the contentment He wants us to develop in our journey with Christ.

Understanding the level of influence Hollywood has on the society

Behold, Hollywood is quite influential. The question now is to know why Hollywood is so influential. Aside from the materialism, it wallows in, Hollywood has come to represent the great American fascination with entertainment. Entertainment is an idol that has crept quietly through the back door of Western Christianity. It goes mostly unnoticed as a threat because it does not wear the mask of evil. Entertainment itself is neutral. We use entertainment to distract and as well comfort crying babies, quiet restless children, and relax weary workers. Entertainment can as well help unify a family on vacation, give teenagers something healthy to do, and bring comforting enjoyment in stressful times.

Unfortunately, entertainment in most prosperous cultures has become an addiction. It is worth pointing to the fact that entertainment for its own sake steals time, money, and mental energy that could be spent on more worthwhile pursuits. The world’s appetite for entertainment is Hollywood’s lifeblood. Hollywood could not sustain itself without the public’s hunger for more. As with any other addiction, the craving for greater thrills increases, and that’s why the public demands spectacles that are bigger, louder, more exciting, more sensual, and more beautiful. Brethren, the lust for entertainment can replace the joy of the Lord until time with God is seen as an interruption in the pursuit of pleasure. At such a point, entertainment has replaced God as our supreme delight and has become an idol (Exodus 20:3; 34:14; Jeremiah 2:13).

The issue with entertainment and how to handle it

According to Romans 1:32, entertainment is wrong when we allow ourselves to be captivated by things that displease God Almighty. When we excuse a movie’s sex scenes with “it had a good message” or become fans of openly immoral entertainers, we are actually crossing a line we ought not to cross. By doing such, we are allowing Hollywood rather than God’s Word to define our values. In making our entertainment choices, one good question to ask is “If Jesus Christ was coming to spend the weekend with me, would I be happy to share this with Him?” Would He approve of the movie? reality show? new CD? Would He buy a People Magazine and feast on the stories of mate-swapping and infidelity? Would He applaud the sensual dancers? If Jesus Christ would not, then why do we? As Christians, we are to follow Him in Words, Thoughts, and Actions.

Standing firm with God even in the face of the trials brought by the entertainment industry

Do we excuse behavior and language in movies and television shows that we would never endorse if it was done in our homes? Behold, if we willingly sit through acts of violence, profanity, immorality, and anti-Christian themes without it bothering us, then perhaps we have allowed the values of Hollywood to invade our lives. When we can fill our minds with vulgarities on Saturday night, yet show up for worship on Sunday morning with no awareness of the inconsistency we have fallen victim to the lure of the Hollywood god. Philippians 4:8 clearly instructs Christians about their thought life: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Likewise, Jesus Christ said, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” (Matthew 15:19). When our minds have entertained that which God calls evil, our thought life and eventually our actions will be affected. In this light, Proverbs 13:20 says, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” As Christians aiming to live a life like that of Jesus Christ, we ought to pay attention to how we spend our time. This is because how we spend our time eventually defines us. Behold, if Hollywood is not reflecting the values that we cherish, we must be careful how much time we spend with it. To honor God Almighty, we must compare the values coming out of Hollywood to the unchanging standard of Scripture. Then we must “hate what is evil; cling to what is good” (Romans 12:9).

What God Says About Hollywood

Hollywood flaunts what God despises. As Christians, we are to seek after God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33). If any form of entertainment does not support that goal, our response must be to reject it. Just as we previously mentioned, God may have forewarned us about Hollywood in the Bible. Even though Hollywood did not exist in the days of creation, the Spirit of Hollywood has always been. To bring clarity to what we are hoping to get across to you, we’ll start by breaking down the word Hollywood. Let’s take the definitions of Holly and Wood and its origins: Middle English – holly, holi, holie. Photo Indo-European (thorn, awn; a kind of thorny plant: prickly). Wood which is a tree or stick.

At this point, when we take Hollywood and let’s say holy wood, we then must carefully look at how Holywood became Hollywood. As Christians, it is very important for us to always remember that Satan’s Kingdom of this world will mimic God’s Kingdom. Jesus Christ died on a stick with thorns around His head. Galatians 3:13 says, “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.” Jesus Christ nullified the curse because He is Holy. In support of this, 1 Peter 1:16 says, “for it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” So now as Jesus Christ is holy so is the wood and all that Jesus Christ touches. The thorns placed on Jesus’ head represent the world and how the world mocks God’s authority over the world.

More

Genesis 3:17 says, “And unto Adam he said, because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying, thou shalt not eat of it, cursed shall be the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.” Note that before the sin of Adam, Adam would spend time with God daily in a garden free of weeds, thorns, and thistles. When Adam sinned, God made sure that all mankind will exist in a burdensome world that is compared to thorn and thistle. This is to say that as man lives in this world he will endure the hardships the world and Satan have to offer. Now we look at the true holywood and we look at the world holywood.

In magic which is dark energy, the wand is made from the wood of a holy tree used to cast spells. Referred to by Satanists as a holy stick. Looking at the Hollywood sign, you’ll see it placed high on a mountain peak. This sign was originally designed as a billboard but gained notoriety as the famous Hollywood sign. The sign is at a place where all who arrive for fortune and fame will look up and chant that their lives will change forever. John 12:32 says, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” As Jesus Christ was lifted on the cross it allowed all who are willing to receive him as Lord and Savior to be drawn to Him. In Hollywood, as this is part of Satan’s portal to draw all men to him, the false holywood sign is present.

Hollywood, Fame, and Fortune

Satan attempted to tempt Jesus Christ three (03) times (Matthew 4:1-11). 1 John 2:16 says, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” The lust of the eyes first started with Eve in the Garden when she listened to the serpent after she saw the forbidden fruit as it was “pleasing to the eye”. Hollywood glamorizes the big houses, clothing, fancy cars, and jewelry. All of the things that are eye-catching or pleasing to the eye. The lust of the flesh comes in when we get pleasure from things because it makes us feel good. We get credit in order to pay for things that will put us in financial bondage but this tends to make us feel good (temporarily).

The pride of life comes when we boast of who we are, and what we have, look down on others and choose to be glamourized or become idols. Brethren, flee from Lust, Greed, Pride, and Fear. As many actors/actresses, singers, and musicians have said that they sold their souls to the devil for fortune and fame but instead got entangled in a world of lust, fear, pride, and greed. The curse that Christ nullified for those who seek Him and His Kingdom is placed on those who seek the wealth and fame of the world which is an illusion. Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Discover the Bible Verses About Theatre. Can A Christian Consider A Career In Acting/entertainment? What Does The Bible Say About Actors/Actresses? All these questions are answered in one way or the other by the Bible through its many verses. However, these are hard questions to answer because the entertainment industry includes many aspects. It is important to understand the vast difference between a theatre that presents only classics such as Shakespeare’s plays and TV shows that glorify sex and violence. While both are considered part of the entertainment industry and involve actors and actresses, the impact on the performers and the audiences is quite different. With this in mind, Christians considering a career in acting or performing must consider the bearing their roles will have on themselves spiritually, the lifestyle into which they’ll be entering, and the influence their performances will have on others.

From a Biblical point of view, it is clearly not an option for a Christian actor/actress/performer to get involved in a movie that glorifies sin or the devil’s work. Behold, actors struggle to find roles and this leaves them vulnerable to whatever parts that come their way, especially when they are first starting out. For unbelieving actors/actresses, the decision to take a part in a movie involves little more than the effect it will have on their careers and future roles and the money they’ll earn. But for the faithful Christian, there is also the problem of whether the role glorifies God or at least it is not actually glorifying rebellion against Him with violence, sex, or other evil practices. An actor is more likely to say, “I’m just acting or playing the role of a character. It is not the real me neither does it portray my personal convictions.”

Bible Verses About Theatre

What The Scriptures Say About Acting

The problem with acting lies in how your role influences yourself and others. That is, the message it passes to yourself and the audience. Behold, this message can actually build or destroy them. In the entertainment industry, the highest pay packages are often prepared for those taking the ungodly roles probably because we live in a world where the Devil has a huge influence on such matters. However, the faithful Christian actor should not take roles or parts which promote Satan’s agenda. The governing principle involved here is found in 1 Corinthians 10:31 – “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” With this in mind, make sure that the role you are acting is glorifying God in one way or the other.

In the same light, the issue of the lifestyle of the actors/actresses must be a consideration for a Christian. Behold, there is an enormous amount of drugs, alcohol, and immoral behavior in the entertainment industry. Most young people who are eager to get the “big break” in this industry are often used and abused by those in power. While it’s still possible for a Christian to be in this world and not be affected by it, 1 Corinthians 15:33 clearly warns us, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” Likewise, the impact performers have on others must be considered. When unbelievers see professing Christians in movies, TV shows, or live performances that promote ungodliness, they sense hypocrisy and are given cause to “blaspheme the name of God” (Romans 2:24). Note that Certain actions or performances can be detrimental to the faith of others.

Important Advice

It is clear that as Christians, we must pay attention to the impacts of our performances on others. Our performances can positively or negatively influence our audience. It can as well lead to a detrimental effect on the faith of other believers, especially young people and those immature in the faith. Behold, Jesus Christ spoke harshly of those who cause “one of these little ones who believe in me to sin” (Matthew 18:6). Likewise, Romans 14:13 says, “Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. ”

With this in mind, the decision to enter into a career in acting or entertainment must be made prayerfully, seeking God’s wisdom (James 1:5) and the counsel of mature Christians, remembering always that “everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness” (2 Timothy 2:19). And in your acting career, never forget the governing principle found in 1 Corinthians 10:31 – “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

Discover the Scriptures On Acting On The Word Of God.

Scriptures On Acting On The Word Of God

Discover the Best Bible Verses About Actors.

Discover the Bible Verses About Acting.

Acknowledge God In Everything Verse

Acknowledge God In Everything Verse

Acknowledge God In Everything Verse. These Biblical verses were divinely revealed to call on mankind to recognize God for who He is. God also known as the Father of Creation is who He says He is and He always does what He says He will do. The whole of mankind owe acknowledgements to God for being who He is. An objective look into our lives as well as our surroundings will reveal uncountable reasons to give thanks and sing praises to God. Behold, He has already done more than we can quantify or use human words to describe. As if this was not sufficient, he has plans to do more. This is obviously because of His immeasurable love to mankind. Remember that He was the one who created Heaven and Earth. He went further to fill Heaven and Earth with creatures of all kinds.

Heaven is God’s throne and the Earth is his footstool. He rules from above with supreme severity, power, and authority over everything on Earth and in Heaven. He created man in his likeness to cater for other creatures of His. Every good thing was given to man in the Garden of Eden until the day he rebelled against God under the influence of Satan. His rebellion brought sin and death into the world. This led to the expulsion of man from the Garden into a world of suffering and hardship. However, God did not stop loving man but went forth to send his only begotten son, Jesus Christ, to be offered as a sacrificial lamb that takes away the sins of the world. Those who welcome his sacrifice and obey his Key Teachings will live forever with God. This supports the Bible Verses On Acknowledging God.

Acknowledge God In Everything Verse

What you should know

Truth be told, the first step to genuinely acknowledging God is accepting and knowing that Jesus Christ is the only way into Heaven. We are all sinners who are in need of God’s mercy. This divinely mercy was released from the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, who takes away the sins of those who welcome him in love. He is the savior of the World through whom God makes us perfect. By sincerely repenting from your sins and obeying the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ, you are made God’s child. And just as Christ overcame death, he will do same for all those who are sent to him by the Father of Creation. In our quest for God’s mercy and favor, we ought to fully reject our understanding and depend on the Lord in all situations – whether good or bad.

We can genuinely acknowledge God by humbling ourselves and choosing His will over ours. Keep in mind that God’s will is the best. When you are face with His will and yours, do not hesitate to go for His. Remember that God wants you to prosper through the plans He has for you as we can read from Jeremiah 29:11. The plans that he has for us are those to uplift us spiritually and physically. Another fact to support the Bible verses about acknowledging God. It is without doubt that God always knows what is best for us. That’s why we should completely put our trust in his will and not ours. The way we live our lives should be a form of acknowledging God’s presence. Let’s cry out to him for help in overcoming our weaknesses and dwelling in his presence.

What you should know

Truth be told, there is much that the Bible says about acknowledging God. The first step to genuinely acknowledging God is by accepting and knowing that Jesus Christ is the only way into Heaven. Another truth is that we are all sinners who are in need of God’s mercy. This mercy in question was released by God through Jesus Christ, the Perfect Heavenly Lamb of God who takes away the sin of those who humbly come to him and accept His message. He stands today as the Savior of the world through whom God makes us perfect and worthy to enter His Kingdom. We are made God’s children by Sincerely Repenting from our sins and obeying the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ. Christ will overcome death in the lives of His own just as He did for Himself. In following Christ, we should rely on Him for all understanding.

We can as well acknowledge God by humbling ourselves before Him and choosing His ways over ours. However, God’s will is the best. It has always been the best and will always be the best. In the face of any situation, we should always strive to do what pleases God. What pleases Him always turns out to be the best for our lives. Remember that God’s plans are designed to make you prosper as we can read from Jeremiah 29:11. Thus, do not doubt His ways but trust in them. Let His ways be a lamp unto your path. No one puts his trust in God and ends up in tears. Even if things seem not to be working in the face of your physical eyes, remain firm. Remember that we walk by faith and not by sight. Trust God because He never fails.

Acknowledge God In All Your Ways Bible Verse

Acknowledge God In All Your Ways Bible Verse. These verses were divinely revealed to call on mankind to recognize God for who He is.

Acknowledge God In All Your Ways Bible Verse

Ahithophel And David Bible Verse

Ahithophel And David Bible Verse

Discover the Ahithophel And David Bible Verse. Ahithophel, also spelled Achitophel, in the Old Testament of the Bible is one of King David’s most trusted advisers. Unfortunately, Ahithophel took a leading part in the revolt of King David’s son, Absalom. It is worth noting that Ahithophel’s defection came as a severe blow to King David. Having consulted Ahithophel about his plans to overthrow King David from the throne, Absalom then sought advice from Hushai, another of David’s counselors. Hushai, who remained secretly loyal to the king, betrayed Absalom’s cause by opposing Ahithophel’s plan and proposing in its place a scheme of his own, which actually gave the advantage to King David. Note that Absalom accepted his plan. Having recognized that Hushai had outwitted him, Ahithophel foresaw the disastrous defeat of Absalom’s forces and decided to take his own life (2 Samuel 15:31–37; 16:20–17:23).

In addition to being a counselor of King David, Ahithophel was a man greatly renowned for his sagacity. During Absalom’s revolt, he deserted David (Psalm 41:9; 55:12–14) and supported Absalom (2 Samuel 15:12). Absalom had sought the advice of Ahithophel who advised him to have incestuous relations with his father’s concubines in order to show all of Israel how odious he was to his father (2 Samuel 16:20). King David sent his friend Hushai back to Absalom, in order to counteract the counsel of Ahithophel (2 Samuel 15:31–37). Ahithophel had recommended an immediate attack on David’s camp at a point where he was weary and vulnerable in order to kill him (2 Samuel 17:1-2), whereas Hushai suggested that “the advice that Ahithophel has given is not good at this time” (2 Samuel 17:7) and recommended delay while a larger army was assembled to counter David’s alleged strength (2 Samuel 17:11-13).

Ahithophel And David Bible Verse

What The Scriptures Say About Ahithophel

The Bible tells us that Ahithophel was originally the counselor of King David, but he later betrayed David. Ahithophel did this by aiding Absalom in his rebellion to overthrow David’s kingship. In addition, the Bible makes us understand that Ahithophel was well-known for his advice, so much so that “Absalom followed Ahithophel’s advice, just as David had done. For every word Ahithophel spoke seemed as wise as though it had come directly from the mouth of God” (2 Samuel 16:23). Behold, Ahithophel had the gift of wisdom. When Absalom captured Jerusalem, Ahithophel’s first piece of advice to him was that he sleep with all his father’s concubines – in a public manner – in order to become a “stench in your father’s nostrils,” as well as strengthen his following (2 Samuel 16:21–22). In those days, taking possession of a King’s concubines was a declaration of one’s right to the throne.

This Ahithophel’s advice to Absalom was in fulfillment of God’s word to David after his adultery with Bathsheba: “This is what the Lord says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight. You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel’” (2 Samuel 12:11–12). It so happened that Absalom followed the advice of Ahithophel and performed this wicked act on the top of the palace roof for all of Israel to see (2 Samuel 16:22). When Absalom began rebelling, King David knew clearly that Ahithophel’s advice would be dangerous in the hands of his son.

More Biblical Facts

King David knew how wise Ahithophel was in giving advice. With this in mind, during his escape up the Mount of Olives, David prayed to God that Ahithophel’s counsel would be turned into foolishness (2 Samuel 15:31). In answer to David’s prayer, when David reached the summit of Mount Olives, he met Hushai the Arkite. David sent Hushai back to Absalom in Jerusalem as a secret agent in the camp of the enemy to frustrate the advice of Ahithophel (2 Samuel 15:32–37). Upon arriving in Jerusalem, Hushai pledged his loyalty to Absalom but began to give advice that would work for David’s benefit (2 Samuel 17:14). While in Jerusalem, Absalom decided to seek advice from his counselors on what step to take next. Ahithophel advised him to pursue David immediately with an army of twelve thousand men and “attack him while he is weary and weak” (2 Samuel 17:1).

Hushai, however, counseled Absalom to delay the attack, form a large force, and totally annihilate David and his men (verses 7–13). It so happened that Absalom chose to follow the advice of Hushai and reject Ahithophel’s counsel. It is worth noting that this was of God, since, “the Lord had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom” (verse 14). Ahithophel’s pride was injured when Absalom rejected his counsel. Following this, “he put his house in order and then hanged himself” (2 Samuel 17:23). In following Hushai’s advice, Absalom was defeated and received the punishment for rebellion (2 Samuel 18:6–15).

Similarities Between Ahithophel And Judas Iscariot

Following Ahithophel’s betrayal of David, many scholars see or picture him as a type of Judas Iscariot. Just as David’s counselor betrayed him, so also did Jesus’ disciple Judas Iscariot betray him. Behold, there are many similarities between Judas Iscariot and Ahithophel:

  • Ahithophel and Judas Iscariot were both trusted friends who betrayed their friend (2 Samuel 15:31; Matthew 26:14–16).
  • Ahithophel and Judas Iscariot both sided with the enemy to plot their king’s death (2 Samuel 17:1–4; Luke 22:2–6).
  • Judas Iscariot and Ahithophel both hanged themselves once the betrayal was complete (2 Samuel 17:23; Matthew 27:5).
  • Judas Iscariot And Ahithophel both lacked qualities of a good friend (Proverbs 17:17).

King David laments in Psalms 41:9, “Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me.” This is, most immediately, a reference to the treachery of Ahithophel. But it is also a prophetic reference to Judas Iscariot, as Jesus Christ points out in John 13:18, where He quotes Psalm 41:9. Just like Judas Iscariot, Ahithophel will forever be remembered as a traitor (Mark 3:19).
