Paul’s teaching in this passage emphasizes that believers who are already married to unbelievers should not seek a divorce. The marriage relationship is considered sanctified or set apart in God’s eyes based on the faith of the believing spouse. The children from that union are legitimate in the sight of God.

To further clarify that 1 Corinthians 7:14 does not speak of household salvation, Paul asks in verse 16, “How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?” If household salvation were true, there would be no need for Paul to refer to a future time of salvation for the unbelieving spouse.
