There are many Bible Verses About Bread worth knowing. Before proceeding, we all know that the aroma of warm bread beckons us to sit, eat, and savor the taste. Behold, bread is far more than a universal food. The Bible clearly tells us that the Israelites kept twelve loaves on the altar at all times. During the times that the Old Testament was written, bread was the basic food that supported life. In addition, bread represented the relationship between God and the Israelites. Also, bread represented the relationship between Jesus Christ and His followers as we can read from the New Testament of the Bible.

People shared bread at meal times. Bread was so important that Apostle Paul used the analogy of bread to describe the unity of believers as ‘being many we are one bread.’ Today, we regularly celebrate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ with communion. Also, this celebration points to His presence in our midst and the Love He has for us. Remember that Jesus Christ called Himself the bread of life as the Bible tells us. Examining the word ‘bread’ in the Bible gives a deeper significance and more meaning of what Jesus meant when He said He is the bread of life.

What does the Scriptures say about Bread?

The threefold purpose of bread in the Bible

1. God said Adam and his offspring would work and sweat for bread

The Biblical book of Genesis tells us that when God sent Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden, He said Adam would work and sweat for bread. This led to the necessity of growing grain for food to survive. In other words, we all need bread for sustenance. As Adam’s offspring, we are not excluded from what God told Adam. Also, our hunger is such that it regularly reminds us that on our own, we can do nothing. It further reminds us that we all depend on God alone for survival. For it is God who created food. The Bible tells us that He blesses the ground to produce for His creatures.

2. Bread draws us together in fellowship

Over the centuries, bread has been a great means of drawing people together. The Scriptures tell us that Abraham used bread for hospitality when he shared bread with his three visitors (Genesis 18). Abraham himself enjoyed the bread served to him by Melchizedek (Genesis 14:17-24). The Jewish tradition includes breaking bread at the beginning of a meal with the words “Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who bringest forth bread from the earth.” We read about Jesus Christ giving thanks to God and breaking bread on several occasions in the New Testament. Also, the disciples carried on the breaking of bread in communion.

3. Bread signifies a covenant relationship with God

This is the most significant meaning of bread in the Bible. It clearly points to a covenant relationship with God. The grain offerings and the bread on the altar were part of the covenant symbols between God and the Israelites. When Jesus Christ break bread and shared wine on the table, He said, “This is the new covenant…” (Luke 22:20). It is without doubt that faith, bread, and relationship are highly connected in the Bible.

Eight (8) Significance of Bread in the Bible

1. Bread and Hospitality

It is by loving, caring, and welcoming others that we develop relationships. Here, hospitality has to do with serving and caring for another person. In restaurants, we are served bread first as a sign of welcoming and generosity of bounty. Abraham did not only offer bread to his visitors, but he instructed his wife to use the finest flour to make the bread (Genesis 18:6). Behold, he offered his guests the best food. Also, David continued to honor the memory of his dear friend Jonathan with continual hospitality to his son Mephibosheth. David says in 1 Samuel 9:7 that he would show him kindness and Mephibosheth would eat bread at his table continually. We should give our best to others and show hospitality to everyone that we meet. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it (Hebrews 13:2).

2. Grain offerings and sacrifices

The Scriptures tell us that God commanded the priests to make sacrifices and offerings for the people. These included grain offerings (Leviticus 2 and 6). Oil and incense accompanied the grain that the priest lifted up. In addition, they prepared cakes of grain and oil and offer them up in chunks on the altar. The children of Israel could smell the scent. Here, the grain offering came immediately after the animal sacrifice. Jesus Christ came as the perfect sacrificial lamp of God that takes away the sin of the world. The night before His death, He provided the bread offering. Each time that we share in the bread and wine, we are celebrating the bread as well as recalling the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ for our sins. His death, the perfect sacrifice that pleases God, replaced animal sacrifice.

3. Manna and the bread of presence

The Scriptures tell us that God guided the Israelites throughout their walk and stay in the wilderness. Also, He gave them bread on a daily basis in the form of manna. This reassured the Israelites that God was continually with them. He provided their needs and protected them from all harm. When the raining down manna from heaven ended, the Almighty God instructed Moses to preserve an Omer of Manna in a Jar (Exodus 16:33). In addition, God had commanded the priests to always keep twelve loaves of bread on the golden table. Each unleavened loaf weighed close to 5 pounds. This display was aimed at regularly reminding God’s people of His presence and ability to protect and provide their needs.

4. Loaves and fishes

We can only describe as extravagant love the act of Jesus Christ feeding thousands of people with bread and fish. This was a miracle that went beyond mere food. It points to the compassionate nature of Jesus Christ, His love, and ability to provide more than what we need (John 6). This miracle gave way for a special talk between Jesus and the people in which he said “I am the Bread of Life.” Yes, He told people that they needed to eat His body. Referencing manna in the wilderness that God sent as food to the people, Jesus Christ declared that He is the bread that came down from heaven. When Jesus Christ continued telling the people that His flesh is true food from heaven, they deserted Him. He turned to His disciples and asked for the first time whether they also wanted to leave.

5. Bread of life: spiritual food and daily bread

During His physical stay on Earth, Jesus Christ shared a great prayer called The Lord’s Prayer and The Our Father. In this prayer, we find the words ‘give us this day our daily bread,’ This points to a dual request for both our essential needs and for Jesus, the Bread of Life. We all need Jesus Christ and the Holy Scriptures to be with us on a daily basis. In Matthew 4, when Satan tempted Jesus to transform stones into bread in order to quench His hunger, Jesus resisted and overcame him by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3 which says that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from God. In order to overcome the devil who cam with more temptations, Jesus quoted from the Scriptures. By so doing, Jesus Christ is telling us that we need to be spiritually grounded in the Scriptures.

6. Breaking of bread

The Bible tells us that two people met with Jesus Christ on a dusty dirt road to Emmaus, after the resurrection. They did not recognize Him but listened eagerly as Jesus Christ explained the Scriptures to them, beginning with Moses in the Old Testament (Luke 24:13-32). At the end of the journey, when Jesus Christ break bread with them, their eyes were opened, and they recognized that it was the crucified and buried Jesus who had come back to life, body and spirit. The two returned to Jerusalem to share their testimony and encounter with Jesus Christ. They told the others how they recognized Jesus during the breaking of bread. Behold, there is power in communion and the presence of Jesus Christ. That is why when you have communion, you should always pray asking God to open your eyes and heart to the truth.

7. Bread in covenant relationships

In simple terms, a covenant is an agreement. Such is that which bonds God and people together. A look in the Old Testament reveals how Abraham a Melchizedek ratified an agreement between them with bread and wine; the elements of communion (Genesis 14:18-19). According to Psalm 110, Jesus is in the order of Melchizedek. In simple terms, Melchizedek means king of righteousness and Salem (his city) means palace. Note that Salem later became Jerusalem. Also, Priest of the Most High God is the Hebrew word El Elyon. This name clearly points to the sacredness of the covenant as Abraham and Melchizedek made a peace treaty. This is what began the tradition of celebrating covenants made with a meal that included bread and wine.

8. Bread in Communion

Matthew 26:19-20 says, At the Last Supper that commemorated Passover, Jesus gave thanks, broke bread, shared it and said, “This is my body.” After he gave them wine he declared, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant.”
In simple terms, the bread represented the body of Christ that was nailed to the cross and broken the next day. The wine represented the blood shed the next day as soldiers nailed Him in the cross and pierced His side. In 1 Corinthians 11:27-29, Apostle Paul warns us to observe it in a a worthy manner so as to avoid being judged. Also, Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthian 10:17 that communion binds us with Jesus Christ. The sharing in the cup of blessing and bread is sharing in the blood and body of Christ, our Lord and Savior who wants us to be in unity.

How the Ingredients of Bread can Remind us of Jesus Christ

Bread is made from a mixture of several ingredients; each of which reminds us of an aspect of Jesus Christ as we can read from below:

Wheat or other grain: Jesus Christ himself used a golden kernel of wheat being buried in the ground to produce a great crop to clearly explain to His disciples His need to die and be buried to bring great glory (John 12:23-24).
The oil used in anointing prophets and kings reflects Jesus Christ, the Anointed One (Messiah). Also, oil tenderizes the bread and Jesus and His forgiveness makes our hearts tender.
Unleavened reflects the sinless nature of Jesus Christ. Also, the leavening used on the day of Pentecost (Leviticus 23:15-17) regularly reminds us of the advancement or growth of God’s Kingdom. Jesus Christ Himself used the leaven to explain how God’s Kingdom grows and spreads (Matthew 13:33).
Water (liquids) cause steam within a loaf of bread thereby leading to additional rising. Likewise, Jesus Christ provides water that springs up to eternal life.
Eggs are known to bring the golden color to bread and add fullness to the taste. Here, eggs are used to depict the tomb. Jesus Christ Himself spoke of eggs as a good gift (Luke 11:12-13). Jesus Christ brings fullness and life to our being.

As Christians, it is important for us to know the different Bible Verses About Worrying. These Bible verses teach us what God is saying about the subject matter. Before proceeding, it is important to understand that the Bible clearly teaches that Christians are not to worry because God is in control. Let’s support this by reading from Philippians 4:6 – “Do not be anxious [do not worry] about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” This Scripture is teaching us that we should always bring all our needs and concerns to God in prayer rather than worrying about them. Likewise, Jesus Christ Himself encourages us to avoid worrying about our physical needs like clothing and food. Jesus Christ assures us that our Heavenly Father will take care of all our needs (Matthew 6:25-34).

God is in control. He will take care of all our needs as Jesus said. Therefore, we have no need to worry about anything. Up to some extent we can say that dwelling in worries is a demonstration that we haven’t strongly trusted in God. Irrespective of what is happening around you, always maintain your trust in God. The Bible tells us that as followers of Christ, we walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). That is, even when things seem not to be unfolding the way you planned, maintain your trust in God. Do not allow your situation or physical happenings around to shake your faith in God. The Bible tells us that God does all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). That is, He is able to transform your tears to joy. Just pray and trust in Him.

There is much that the Scriptures say about worrying. The one thing we are sure of is that God is always in control. In the face of challenging situations, remember that God is still on the throne. The Scriptures tell us that He is working out things for the good of those who love and trust in Him. Jeremiah 29:11-12 says, “I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for. Then you will call to Me, and I will answer you.”

How can we overcome worry?

It is clear that worrying should not be part of a believers life. The question now is how can we overcome worrying? The answer is found in 1 Peter 5:7, and reads “cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Behold, God is not pleased to see us carrying around the weight of problems and burdens. In this Scriptural verse, God is clearly telling us to give Him all our worries and concerns because He is willing and able to help us. God wants to be in-charge of handling all our problems because He is able and He cares for us. The Bible tells us that God is concerned about everything that happens to us. He is all-knowing, all-powerful, all-loving, all-caring, and has the authority to rule over every situation in our lives.

There is no worry that is too big nor too small to get God’s attention. In faithfulness, you can come to Him in prayer and have your prayer request answered just as He promised. When we give God our problems, He promises to give us the peace of mind that transcends all understanding (Philippians 4:7). As for those who do not know the Savior, worry and anxiety will be part of life. But for those who have Believed, Repented, and started obeying the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ, Jesus promised, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light”(Matthew 11:28-30).

There are many Bible Verses About The World. We are all one of two different kinds of people. That is, we are either living for self and our own desires in this world, or we are dying to self and the frailty of our flesh with the power of the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ. We can say without doubt that the Bible contains several Scriptures and sections that are talking about living in the world. Although we dwell in the world, Jesus Christ calls on us to be different than the world. 1 John 2:16-17 says, “For all that is in the world – the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and the pride of life – is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

Worldliness has to do with putting your attention or focus on yourself and the desires of the flesh that you crave for. Sexual temptation is rampant and it is quite easy for someone who is weak and lacks self-control to want such desires fulfilled. If you find out that putting another “notch on your belt” makes you feel a man, then you are living for the world. What about material possessions? Do you put more value to the things of this world than those of heaven? Are you one who is ready to gather the material things of this world at the expense of your relationship with God? If you are such, then repent when it is still day time because non of these things will last. Earthly riches are temporal but Heavenly riches are forever (Matthew 6:19-21). A wise man goes for what is lasting.

What does the Scriptures say about the World?

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Believing in Jesus Christ is loving and living for Him. And living for Him as the Scripture says, is more of a spiritual journey. That is, you don’t become perfect overnight or ever. Even though you stumble along the way, the essential is to put you hope in Christ and focus on renewing your mind with the help of the Holy Spirit so that you can think, speak, and act differently. When we were living for ourselves, we did lots of selfish things. However, Christ calls us to be unselfish in thoughts, words, and actions. Also, He invites us to be generous, loving, willing and ready to help others.

In Matthew 22:37-39 – “He said to him (a Pharisee lawyer) you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Here, Jesus Christ is clearly saying that we have to die to ourselves in order to stop being of the world. Likewise, we have to show love, mercy, kindness, and goodness to those around us and not always focusing on ourselves. The more we put to death the desires of our flesh, the more we go closer to God and start living a life of helping and assisting others and above all guiding them to knowing and loving God.

You can’t be both people

The truth is that you can’t be of the world and a believer at the same time. It is also true that as a believer, you will still have things of the world, but the difference is that they won’t be your goal or primary focus. That is, you won’t be saying to yourself, “I must have that new hummer at all cost” or “Wealth is what I need for happiness and peace.” True happiness and peace does not come from wealth but from Jesus Christ. Learn to be contented with what you have. In contentment, always give thanks to God for His blessings in your life. You must not have the latest version of all gadgets in the word. James 4:4 tells us that “friendship with the world is hatred toward God.” Such is when you love the things of this world more than God.

Matthew 6:19-21 says, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither Moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
We should always ask ourselves whether we are building eternal treasures in heaven or gathering temporal treasures here on earth for our own desires. We should never forge that a time will come when we will die and all of those earthly possessions will mean absolutely nothing. The way you came into the world is the way you’ll leave it. That is, you’ll leave this world with none of your possessions. That’s why you should focus on building heavenly wealth through faithfulness in serving God.

There are many Bible Verses About Work worth knowing by everyone. Genesis 2:15 says, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” God created us to work. However, not in a sadistic sense to do His bidding or face His wrath. His purpose for mankind to work was to subdue the Earth and have dominion over every living creature as we can read from Genesis 1:28. Likewise, we can say that all of life, culture and work is to reflect the beauty and gory of God Almighty, creator of Heaven and Earth. This point is highly supported by the different Bible verses on work. In fact, it is a frequent theme across the Bible. Whether you are a pastor, entrepreneur, elementary teacher, construction worker, or a stay-at-home mom, work is deeply rooted in the goodness of God’s creation.

Genesis 2:15 highly supports the fact that work is good and pleasing before God. Behold, Jesus Christ Himself was a carpenter, and his earthly day, Joseph, was a carpenter, too. The Bible tells us that God the Father Himself went to the extent of getting His hands dirty when He made “man of dust from the ground” (Genesis. 2:15; cf. 1:28). If God worked, what more of us? Even today, He is still the one supporting the pillars of the universe. That is, He is still doing something which we can consider as work. Also, He knows and controls all things that happen. Not only did God command us to work, but, being created in His image as a Creator, we are hardwired with a desire to create -to work. However, this is not to say that we are able to create something out of nothing as God did.

Moving from creating a meal out of multiple ingredients to building a pretty nice house out of multiple materials, to varying degrees as God permeates, we can create. In the likeness of God, we can bring out order out of chaos. Genesis 1:1-2 says, “The earth was without form and void… And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Just as the Spirit of God Almighty brought order to creation, we too can bring order in the world we dwell in. Behold, it is a desire and matter of wanting it to be and going after it. Today, governments can establish an orderly way of life and commerce. Likewise, engineers can create order out of the systems that they develop. And even when we clean, we bring forth order in chaos.

What does the Scriptures say about Work?

Although we find work challenging, the Scriptures tell us that it is quite glorious. This brings forth many questions in our minds. That is, we are more likely to question why the Bible portrays work as glorious yet we find it challenging? Tragically, the goodness of work was tainted by sin. The Scriptures tell us that not only did sin enter the human heart through Adam’s rebellion, but sin has permeated the entirety of creation, including work.

How sin twisted work

In reading the different Bible verses about work, we realize that sin has corrupted the desire for the good work we were created to do. In addition, it has made work itself difficult (Genesis 3:17-19). Below are three different temptations that you are likely to face at work:

1. Worship work

The temptation to worship work as an idol is quite prominent in our midst. We are tempted to serve work gladly with long hours, bowing down to its demands despite the destruction it causes us and our families.

2. Reject work

It is without doubt that we are regularly tempted to reject work. We turn to run away from work. We are more likely to embrace laziness: a little sleep, some more sleep, a good nap, more merry, feasting, and rest. Such is the path that leads to laziness. It ought not to be so. It’s high time for us to face it; working is difficult. Of course, you’ll have carefree days, but there are seasons when you’ll feel tired and defeated. Whether we find work too challenging, or are struggling with laziness and worship leisure and rest, we’ll wrestle with a desire to reject work outright.

3. Twist work

We are often tempted to twist work. Are you feeling inclined to fudge the number on your sales quota? Are you being tempted to receive money under the table to push through a deal? Whatever type of work we carryout, we are always tempted to twist it with sin for one or more reasons. In most case, it is for our personal interest. But it ought not to be so. Jesus Christ came to redeem everything – including work (Col. 1:15-20). That is why whenever we are doing work, we should make sure that it is pleasing to God. Work is meaningless and useless when God is not involved.

Biblical facts about work

The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ has taken the “thorns and thistles” we work among (Gen. 1:18). Also, He wore a crown of thorns on His head as a reminder that He is the Lord of lords and King of kings (Revelation 19:16). The crown of thorns that was prepared by the Roman soldiers and placed on Jesus’ head with the intent of mocking Him, turned out to be a picture of Jesus Christ as the one true King and sovereign ruler over Heaven and Earth. Jesus came to accomplish a redemption mission. Through faith in Him, our lives have been redeemed. He has delivered us from the penalty and power of sin. In Him, we benefit God’s special gift of Eternal Life. Thanks to Christ, we’ve been saved from the Fire of Hell.

Stephen Nichols says, “Christ through his redemptive work undone what Adam did in the fall. And he restores to us the ability and the capacity to be image bearers as God intended us to be.” In the process of redeeming our work, below are three great ways we’ll find God at work in us and through our work in Scriptures about work:

1. Jesus Christ is our Boss

How do we work for our employers? Do we work for him or her as we work for Jesus? It is easy for our eyes of faith to become glassy at work, and forget who it is that we work for. Jesus may not be your crew leader. In fact, He may not even be physically sitting in an office watching your every move. Likewise, He may not be the one signing your check, but He remains the one you work for. With a deep understanding of this, Apostle Paul said “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men… You are serving the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:23-24). If you happen to find yourself frustrated, angry, or not compelled to do something your employer request of you, take a moment and pray. Seek God’s grace in Christ, and remember that you are working for Jesus Christ.

2. God works through your work

Behold, God is at work in your life and through your life in more ways than you can imagine. Even if you do not instantly see how the work you do benefits others, have it in mind that God has chosen to work through you, your skills, and experiences for the good of others.

3. You can trust God with your work

There are times we feel stressed at work. If you’ve never felt this way, then you’ve probably not worked for long. The workplace has several causes of stress. At work, we have crushing deadlines, conflicts with our co-workers or manager, or not compensated well for the work we do. Regardless of the cause of stress at work, we are free in Christ from anxiety and can fully trust God to meet our needs. God is able to justly work through us despite the happenings around. He never fails His own because He is all-faithful.

Behold, there is much that the Bible says about handwork. In addition to encouraging us to work hard, the Bible tells us that such is pleasing to God. The beginning of an essay penned by Bob Black in 1985 entitled “The Abolition of Work” read, “No one should ever work. Work is the source of nearly all the misery in the world. Almost any evil you’d care to name comes from working or from living in a world designed for work. In order to stop suffering, we have to stop working.” Undoubtedly, many dwelling in a leisure loving culture would wholeheartedly echo Black’s sentiment. However, such is the approach that leads to lack and poverty as discussed in Proverbs 6:10-12.

Americans spend about 50% of their working hours devoted to work. With this in mind, one might ask, “is work a curse, or is it something that humans were uniquely designed to do?” In stark contrast to the claims of Bob Black, the importance and beneficial nature of work is more of a resounding theme in both the Old and New Testament of the Bible. The origin of work is clearly depicted in the Biblical book of Genesis. In its opening passage, God Himself is the primary worker, busy with the creation of the World (Genesis 1:1-15). God worked for six days and rested on the seventh day. Thus, God was the first to do work on Earth. Hence, we can say without doubt that legitimate work reflects the activity of God. And because God is inherently good, work is also inherently good (Psalm 25:8; Ephesians 4:28).

Genesis 1:31 tells us that when God viewed the fruit of His labor, He called it “very good.” That is, God examined and accessed the quality of His work, and when He concluded that He had done a good job, He took pleasure from it. In this light, it is apparent that work should be productive. That is, we should always conduct work in a way that produces the highest quality outcome. Likewise, the reward for work is the honor and satisfaction that comes from a job well done. We are told in Psalm 19 that God reveals Himself to the world through His work. This means that through natural revelation, God’s existence is made known to everyone through His might works. This points to the fact that work reveals something about the one doing the work, It clearly exposes underlying motivations, character, abilities, skills, and personality traits.

Jesus Christ echoed the principle we are trying to explain here in Matthew 7:15-20 when He openly declared that bad trees produce only bad fruit and good trees only good fruit. Always remember that God created man for His own glory (Isaiah 43:7). It was with this in mind that Apostle Paul told us that whatsoever we do, we should do it for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Behold, we were created by God to glorify Him. Here, to glorify means “to give an accurate representation.” That is why all work done by Christians should give the world an accurate picture of God in His righteousness, excellence, mercy, love, and faithfulness.

What does the Scriptures say about Hard Work?

The Scriptures tell us that God created man in His image with characteristics like Him (Genesis 1:26-31). That is, God created man to work with Him in the world. The Bible tells us that God created a garden and put Adam in it to cultivate and maintain it (Genesis 2:8, 15). In addition, Adam and Eve were commanded by God to subdue and rule over the Earth. So what does this original work mandate mean? In simple terms, to cultivate means to foster growth and to bring improvement. To maintain means to preserve from failure or decline. To control means to exercise discipline and control in the situation at hand. Ruling over on its part means administering, taking responsibility for, and making wise decisions. This very mandate applies to all vocations in the midst of God’s people.

The 15th-century Reformation Leaders saw an occupation as a ministry before God. Likewise, jobs should be acknowledged as ministries. Also, workplaces should be considered as mission fields. In Genesis 3, we hear of the Fall of Man, a situation that generated a change in the nature of work. As a result of Adam’s sin or rebellion, God pronounced several judgments in Genesis 3:17-19, the most severe of which is physical and spiritual death. Whatever the case, labor and the results of labor figure centrally in the rest of the judgments. Behold, God cursed the ground. Work became difficult. The word toil which is used actually implies difficulty, challenge, struggle, and exhaustion. Although work itself remained good, man must expect to have it accomplished at “the sweat of his brow.”

Facts about hard work

The Bible does not promise us that the results of hard work will always be positive. Although man will eat the plants of the field, the field will also produce thorns and thistles. That is why you should get it once and for all that hard work and effort will not always be rewarded in the way the laborer expects or desires. The Scripture tells us that man would be eating from the produce of the field, not the garden. A garden is symbolic of an earthly paradise designed by God as a save enclosure. Also, gardens symbolize purity and innocence. On the other hand, the earth or field, represents an unbounded, unprotected space and an emphasis on loss of inhibition and worldliness. Thus, the work environment can turn to be very hostile, especially for Christians (Genesis 39:1-23; Exodus 1:8-22; Nehemiah 4).

It is said that man has three basic needs in life: love, purpose, and significance. It is rather unfortunate that on many occasions, humans attempt to find purpose and significance in work itself. In Ecclesiastes 2:4-11, King Solomon clearly details his search for meaning in a variety of projects and works of all kinds. Despite the fact that the work brought some degree of satisfaction in accomplishment, his conclusion was “Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.” The Bible tells us that work is done not only to benefit the worker, but others also (Exodus 23:10-11; Deuteronomy 15:7-11; Ephesians 4:28). In addition, work is a gift from God and, for His people, will be blessed (Psalm 104:1-35; 127:1-5; Ecclesiastes 3:12-13, 5:18-20; Proverbs 14:23).

God always equips His people for their work (Exodus 31:2-11). The Biblical welfare system was one of hard work (Leviticus 19:10; 23:22). Always remember that the Bible is harsh in its condemnation of laziness (Proverbs 18:9). Apostle Paul under the influence of the Holy Spirit was clear in establishing the Christian work ethics: “If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially those of his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever” (1 Timothy 5:8). Likewise, Apostle Paul’s instructions to another church in regard to those who chose not to work was to “keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.”

Apostle Paul goes on to say that “For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: ‘If a man will not work, he shall not eat.’” Let’s get his instructions to those who had been idle by reading from 2 Thessalonians 3:12 – “Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat.” Despite the fact that God’s original plan for work was perverted by Man’s rebellion or sin, He will one day restore work without the burden that sin introduced (Isaiah 65:17-25; Revelation 15:1-4; 22:1-11). Until that day when the New Heavens and the New Earth are set in place, the Christian attitude towards work should reflect that of Jesus as we can read from John 4:34 – “My food, said Jesus, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”

Today, in talking about the tangible written Word of God, we are pointing to the Bible. With this in mind, one might ask, “is the Bible truly the Word of God?” In answering this question, we’ll point to the description of the Bible, its importance to our lives, and its ultimate eternal impact on us. 2 Peter 1:21 says, “For no prophetic message ever came just from human will, but people were under the control of the Holy Spirit as they spoke the message that came from God.” In other words, “Holy Men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” Thus, the Bible authoritatively reveals God’s message.

If the Bible is truly God’s Word, then we should cherish it, study it, obey it, and fully trust it for what it says. If the Bible is the Word of God, then to dismiss it is to dismiss God Himself. The Bible is evidence and illustration of God’s love for mankind. It was handed to men through a series of revelations from God. Here, the term revelation means that God communicated to mankind what He is like and how we can build and maintain a close relationship with Him. All these are things that we could not have known should in case God did not divinely reveal them to us in the Bible. Despite the fact that God’s revelation about Himself and His Kingdom in the Bible was given progressively over approximately 1500 years, it has always contained everything that God wants man to know about Him.

Bible Verses About The Word Of God

If the Bible is truly the Word of God, then it is the final authority for all matters of faith, religious practices, salvation, and morals. With this in mind, the question that we should be asking ourselves is that on how to be certain that the Bible is the true Word of God and not merely a good book? What makes the Bible unique or sets it apart from all other religious books that have ever been written? Is there any evidence that the Bible is truly the Word of God? All these questions must be seriously examined if we are to determine or ascertain the validity of the Bible’s claim to be the Truthful Word of God Almighty, creator of Heaven and Earth. The answers to these questions will also build in us a conviction that the Bible was divinely inspired, and totally sufficient for all matters of faith.

It is without doubt that the Bible itself claims to be the very Word of God. Let’s clearly observe this in Apostle Paul’s commendation to His spiritual son, Timothy: “… from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:15-17). It is important to understand here that there are several internal and external evidences that the Bible is the Word of God. By internal evidence, we are pointing to those things within the Bible that testify of its divine origin.

What does the Scriptures say about the Word of God?

There is much that the scriptures say about the Word of God. The Scripture itself claims to have been divinely revealed by God to mankind. Such are what we refer to as internal evidences.

Internal Evidences that the Bible is the Word of God

1. Unity of the Bible

The first internal evidence that the Bible is God’s word has to do with its unity. Despite the fact that it is actually sixty-six (66) books, written on three (3) continents, in three (3) different languages, over an approximately period of 1500 years, by over 40 authors who came from many walks of life, the Bible remains one unified book from beginning to end without contradiction. The unity of the Bible is such that it is unique from all other books. This is clear evidence of the divine origin of the Words which God moved men to record through His Spirit (2 Peter 1:21).

2. Detailed and accurate prophecies in the Bible

The prophecies contained within the Bible are making up for another internal evidence that the Bible is truly God’s Word. The Bible contains hundreds of detailed prophecies pointing to the future of individual nations including Israel, neighboring nations, distant nations, and mankind. Other prophecies point to the coming of a Messiah, the Savior of all those who would believe in Him. Unlike the prophecies found in other religious books or those made by mere men such as Nostradamus, Biblical prophecies are extremely detailed and truthful. The Old Testament of the Bible points to over three hundred prophecies concerning Jesus Christ. These prophecies clearly revealed where Jesus Christ would be born, His lineage, how He would suffer, how He would die, resurrect, and come for the second time to take with Him all who are truly His own. There is no other religious book with such prophetic details and accuracy.

3. The Bible’s unique authority and power

A third internal evidence of the divine origin of the Bible is its unique authority and power. Although this evidence might sound to be more subjective than the first two, it is no less a powerful testimony of the divine origin of the Bible. Get it once and for all that the authority of the Bible is unlike any other book ever written. This power and authority that we are talking about are best seen in the way countless lives have been supernaturally transformed by the power of God’s Word.

God’s Word has cured countless drug addicts, freed homosexuals from their evil practices, transformed derelicts and deadbeats, renewed the hearts of hardened criminals, rebuked sinners, and transformed the wicked to good people. This dynamic and life transforming power from the Bible is an indication that it is God’s Word. That is why God says in Jeremiah 23:29 – “My Message is like a Fire, and like a Hammer that breaks rocks into pieces.“

External evidences that the Bible is the Word of God

1. Historicity of the Bible

Since the Bible details historical events, its truthfulness and accuracy are subject to verification just like any other historical document. Through a collection of archeological evidences and other writings, the historical accounts of the Bible have been proven true and time again to be precise, accurate, and true. It is without doubt that all the archeological and manuscript evidence in support of the truthfulness of the Bible makes it the best documented book from the ancient world. Since the Bible accurately and truthfully records historically veritable events, it is a great indication of its truthfulness in handling religious related facts. This helps it substantiate its claims of being the Word of God.

2. Integrity of its human authors

The second external evidence that the Bible is truly God’s Word is the integrity of its human authors. Just as we previously mentioned, God used men from many walks of life to record His Word. By studying the lives of these men, we find out that they walked in honesty and sincerity. These men were more than willing and ready to embrace rejection, persecution, hatred, and even death in support of their believe or certainty on what God told them to do and say. The fact that they were willing and ready to die often excruciating deaths for what they believed testifies that they actually heard from God and had to remain faithful to Him in all conditions.

All the Men who wrote the New Testament of the Bible and many hundreds of other believers (1 Corinthians 15:6) knew the truth of their message and where certain about its genuineness because they had seen and spent time with Jesus Christ after He had risen from the dead. Behold, seeing the risen Christ unarguably had a tremendous impact on them. They moved out from hiding in fear to being willing to die in support of the Message that God had revealed to them. Their lives and deaths clearly testify to the fact that the Bible is God’s Word.

3. Indestructibility of the Bible

The indestructibility of the Bible is another great eternal evidence that it is God’s Word. Due to its importance and claim to be the Word of God, the Bible has suffered more vicious attacks and attacks aimed at destroying it than any other book in history. From early Roman emperors like Diocletian, through communist dictators and on the modern-day atheists and agnostics, the Bible has withstood and outlasted all of those trying to destroy it. Glory be to God Almighty for the Bible is still today the most widely published book in the world. Overtime, skeptics have regarded the Bible as mythological, but archeology has confirmed it to be historical. Although evil people have openly attacked its teachings as primitive and outdated, its moral and legal concepts and teachings have had a major positive influence on societies and cultures throughout the world.

Till date, the Bible continues to receive attacks from pseudo-science, political, and psychology movements, yet it remains relevant and true as it was when it was first written. All attempts to discredit or destroy the Bible have known nothing but failure. This is because God is still on His throne and will always be on His throne. Do not be alarmed that no matter how the Bible is attacked, it always comes out unchanged and victorious. After all, Jesus Christ Himself said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Mark 13:31). Upon looking at all these evidences, one can say without doubt that, yes, the Bible is God’s Word.

Archeology confirms the Biblical record

Archeological finds continue to give us reliable evidences that the Biblical writers accurately recorded history. For example, the Pool of Bethesda as mentioned in John 5:2 was once dismissed as non-historical. As of the time of writing, tour guides in Jerusalem point groups to its location in the northeast of the Old City. Today, there is a visible stone inscription documenting the life and office of Pontius Pilate; the ossuary (coffin) of Caiaphas, the High Priest of the Crucifixion; an old inscription found at Delphi that clearly describes the work of Gallio, proconsul at Corinth (Acts 18:12-17); and scores of other artifacts. All these are pointing to the accuracy of Biblical history and descriptions.

Is the Bible filled with contradictions?

This is one of the most common ways through which skeptics justify their skepticism about the Bible. Such people base themselves on the commonplace supposition that contradictions are bad. To genuinely know whether or not the Bible is contradictory, you should study it. For sure, it is not contradictory to dismiss a book you haven’t studied. By finding a statement that I make that disagrees with something I’ve already said, one is more likely to fell justified by rejecting both. Even though one may be true or even still both may be true. In dealing with contradiction, it is either we are thanking or blaming Aristotle (384-322 BC). In his obsessive desire to compile all the knowledge in the world into an organized system, he devised laws of logic as organization tools. One of this laws is called the law of contradiction: A cannot equal B and at the same time not equal B. In this light, fish cannot be a mammal, if a biologist like Aristotle is going to classify it. From then to now, westerners and other far way nations have adopted Aristotle’s Law as the basis for determining all truth. And as a result, if we can find a contradiction in the Bible, we can have reason to dismiss its veracity. But before you proceed, not that there is a fly in the ointment.

That is, Aristotle applied his law to physical and rational truth, not to spiritual or relational experience. It may appear contradictory to claim that you love your children and yet sometimes wish they’d never been born. But for a typical parent, both are sometimes true. Likewise, Jesus Christ claimed to be fully God and fully man; God is three and yet One; God knows the future but we have freedom to choose; the Bible is divinely inspired but humanly written. As example of what a person might find contradictory in the Bible is that it teaches us that “God is love” (1 John 4:8), yet it also states that “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness” (Romans 1:18). Now, how can God both love and hate? Don’t ask Aristotle, but ask any parent.

Who decided what books should be in the Bible?

The young in the faith are more likely to assume that the Bible was directly handed to mankind by God in the form of a black leather. However, many have heard somewhere along their spiritual journey that some books where excluded from the Bible and wonder why. Perhaps, a group of church officials decided the whole thing. Perhaps, they were books that told a different story from that in the Bible. Maybe there was a smoke-filled room somewhere. Whatever the case, the actual story is nowhere that interesting.

How the Hebrew Scriptures came to be

Today, Christians typically call this section the Old Testament, but those who wrote the New Testament didn’t. When Apostle Paul wrote to his spiritual son, Timothy, from the death row in Rome, asking for his scrolls and parchments (2 Timothy 4:13), he was asking for his copies of the only one Bible he knew. Today, a good number of scholars appropriately call these thirty-nine (39) books the Hebrew Scriptures, in defense to the Jewish faith they express. The Hebrew Bible was first divided into Law, Prophets, and Writings, the arrangement that was in place during the days of Jesus Christ (also read Luke 24:44).

The Jewish numbered the Scriptures as twenty-four books, combining Ezra/Nehemiah, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicles, and the 12 Minor Prophets as “The Twelve.” All these books were written and compiled over centuries of use. According to the Jewish tradition, a council of rabbis and scholars met at Jamnia on the Mediterranean sea in AD 90 and AD 118. It was during this meeting that they finalized the list of books as we have them today, recognizing what their people had accepted as God’s word for centuries.

How the New Testament joined the Old

Not very long from the Ascension of Jesus Christ into His Father’s Kingdom, the Christian movement began recording its faith and doctrines. The eye witnesses to Jesus’ life and ministry were dying or growing old. Fraudulent claims were beginning to appear. The need for a canon (“rule”) among the believers was absolutely needed. The Canon was to be a standard to measure truth and defend the faith. It resulted to what we have today as the New Testament.

Four (4) criteria that were developed for accepting a book as inspired

1. The book must have been written by an Apostle or based on his eye witness

Matthew, the tax collector, was a disciple of Jesus Christ before he wrote his gospel, as was John. Mark was a spiritual son of Apostle Peter and an early missionary associate of Apostle Paul (1 Peter 5:13). Luke was a Gentile physician who willingly joined Paul’s second missionary journey at Troas (read Acts 16:10, where Luke changes the narrative from “they” to “we”). Luke wrote his gospel and the book of Acts based on the eye witness testimony of others (Luke 1:1-4). Paul’s letters resulted from an eye witness to the risen Christ (cf. Acts 9:1-6), as did the letters of James (half-brother of Jesus), Peter, Jude (another half-brother of Jesus), and John. This criteria alone excluded most of the books suggested for the canon.

2. The book must possess merit and authority in its use

This law made it easy to separate those writings that were inspired from those that were not.

“For instance, the First Gospel of the Infancy of Jesus Christ portrays or tells of a man changed into a mull by a bewitching spell but converted back to manhood when the infant Christ is put on his back for a ride (7:5-27). Still in the book, the boy Jesus causes clay birds and animals to come to life (ch. 15), stretches a throne his father had made too small (ch. 16), and takes the lives of boys who oppose him (19:19-24).”

It wasn’t hard to figure out that such books were not from the Holy Spirit.

3. A book must be accepted by the larger church and not just a small congregation

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians was an early instance of a letter that became “circular” in nature. We are saying here that this letter was read by churches across the faith. Likewise, his other letters soon acquired such status. Note that by the mid-second century, only the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were accepted universally by the church, as quotations from the believers of that era make clearly. Others were not considered to be inspired by God.

4. A book came to be approved by the decision of the church

The Muratorian Canon was the very first list o convey the larger church’s opinion regarding accepted books of the New Testament Canon. Actually compiled around AD 200, it represented the usage of the Roman church at the time. This list we are talking about does omit James, 1 and 2 Peter, 3 John, and Hebrews since the compiler was not sure of their authorship. However, all were soon included in the later canons. The list we have today is that which was set by Athanasius in AD 367. His list was approved by church councils meeting at Hippo Regius in 393 and Carthage in 397.

These councils did not impose anything new upon the church. Rather, they codified what believers had already come to accept and use as the word of God. By the time that the councils had approved the twenty-seven (27) books of our New Testament, they had already served in fullness as the established companion to the Hebrew Scriptures for generations. So, who decided what books should be in the Bible? Ultimately, their Author. We can say that the same Holy Spirit that inspired Biblical revelation (2 Peter 1:20-21) led the Christian movement to those Books He inspired.

Proverbs 19:8 says, “He who gets wisdom loves himself.” By going after wisdom, you are doing yourself a great favor.

In Proverbs 8:32–36, wisdom herself says, “And now, my sons, listen to me: happy are those who keep my ways . . . Happy is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. For he who finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord; but he who misses me injures himself; all who hate me love death.” If we fail to get wisdom, we’ll suffer injury and end up in the hands of death. The ultimate happiness that all people long for will only be found by those who first “get wisdom.” Such is the happiness reserved for those who are in Christ. That is, those who Believe, Sincerely Repent, and obey the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ that cover the Law of Moses and the Teachings of the Prophets. Such are those who are given Eternal Life.

What does the Scriptures say about Wisdom?

Definition of Wisdom

What is wisdom? What are the characteristics of a person who has wisdom? As first characteristic worth knowing, we have Proverbs 9:10 which says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” What this Scripture is saying is that the wisdom that leads to life, peace, and ultimate happiness is that which begins with knowing and fearing God. Fearing the Lord God Almighty means fearing to run away from Him. It means fearing to seek refuge, protection, happiness, joy, peace, salvation and hope elsewhere than in God. Behold, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. This saying is not only in the sense that it is the first step in a wise way to live, but also in the full sense that later characteristics of wisdom all flow from the fear of God.

Proverbs 11:2 says, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace; but with the humble is wisdom.” With this in mind, we can say without doubt that a wise person is characterized by Humility. Anyone who is proud does not fear the Lord God. Such is he/she who lacks the foundation of wisdom. On the other hand, the person who fears the Lord God is humble, because he/she depends on God for everything and fears to take credit for what God has done through them. It is important to understand here that humility is the foundation for other aspects of godly wisdom. This is so because humility is teachable and open to growth. The proud person finds it difficult to admit his/her errors talk-less pf their need for growth. The humble person is open to counsel and reason. Such a person is ready to accept corrections and follow the truth.

Facts about Wisdom

Unlike Pride, Humility does not recoil when commanded to do something. And behold, such is essential for the achievement and advancement of wisdom. The reason why we say so is because Moses taught us that wisdom consist of knowing and obeying the commandments of God. Let’s support this point by reading from Deuteronomy 4:5–6, “Behold I have taught you statutes and ordinances, as the Lord my God commanded me that you should do them . . . Keep them and do them; for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples.” Jesus Christ Himself said same in Matthew 7:24 – “Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon a rock.” With this in mind, a simple, brief, and good definition of wisdom would be, “hearing and doing God’s Word.”

Also, wisdom must go beyond knowing and doing what the Word of God says. Such was the wisdom that accompanied King Solomon in resolving even the most complex problems (1 Kings 3:28). We are trying to say here that wisdom must include a sensitive, mature judgement, or discernment on how the fear of the Lord God Almighty should work itself out in all the circumstances that are not specifically dealt with in the Scriptures. It is for this reason that Apostle Paul calls in Romans 12:2 a “renewing of the mind” in Christ which is then able to examine and approve the Will of God. The Apostle calls such as “spiritual wisdom” as we can read from Colossians 1:9, “We have not ceased to pray for you, that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.“

How to get Wisdom (5 Biblical ways to get Wisdom)

1. Desire wisdom with all your might (Proverbs 4:8)

Proverbs 4:8 says, “Prize her highly and she will exalt you; she will honor you for your embrace.” The very fist step to get wisdom is to desire her with all your might. Note that the words from this Scripture are not cheap. We all know that to Prize something and to Embrace someone are deep signs of intense desire and love. It is in this light that we say that wisdom must be valuable for us. Likewise, anyone who is serious about getting wisdom must be willing and ready to sell everything to purchase it as we can read from Proverbs 2:4 – “Seek it like silver, and search for it as for hidden treasure.”

2. Study and Meditate on the Word of God because it contains the Fullness of Wisdom (Psalm 19:7)

Psalm 19:7 says, “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.” It is important for us to study and meditate on the Word of God because it contains wisdom above measure. If we are serious about becoming wise, we must devout ourselves to know and understand the testimony of our Lord Jesus Christ. By this, we do not only mean faithful Bible studies. Also read great books on theology and Biblical interpretation.

3. Pray for Wisdom (James 1:5)

James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God.” Solomon who is considered today as the wisest man to have ever lived was not born wise. The Bible tells us that he prayed for wisdom and God said “Because you have asked this and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, behold now I do according to your word” (1 Kings 3:11). Likewise, Prophet Daniel admitted that He was not born with wisdom (Daniel 2:30), but he said, “To thee, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for thou hast given me wisdom and strength, and hast made known to me what we asked of thee” (Daniel 2:23).

It was in this same light that Apostle Paul prayed that the churches might be given “spiritual wisdom” (Colossians 1:9) and that in Christ, they might have “a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of God” (Ephesians 1:17).

4. Think frequently of your death (Psalm 90:12)

Psalm 90:12 says, “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” This fourth Biblical instruction on how to get wisdom clearly has to do with frequently thinking about your death. We can as well put it this way, in your search for wisdom, frequently think about the shortness of this life and the infinite length of that to come. Behold, there is scarcely any thought that has the ability to purge our priorities of vain and world perceptions like the very thought of our imminent death. Such brings us back to the right track. That is why we should regularly think about our death for there is great wisdom in such meditation.

5. Come to Jesus Christ (Matthew 12:42).

In Matthew 12:42, Jesus Christ says, “The queen of the south will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold something greater than Solomon is here.” Last but not the least, coming to Jesus Christ is the key to achieving eternal wisdom. Christ and His Word are greater than Solomon who is considered to be the wisest man to have every lived. With this in mind, it is without doubt that Jesus Christ is the Source of Wisdom. Behold, wisdom flows from Him like a river that never goes dry. Anyone who is thirsty can come to Him to quench his/her thirst. It is important to understand here that Jesus Christ is the Wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24, 30).

All Prophets and Messengers of God before and after Christ pointed to the way and are still pointing to the way. One might ask, “who is the way?” Behold, Jesus Christ is the way and the truth (John 14:6). That is, others pointed to the way; he is the way. Others had given promises; but “all the promises of God find their yes in him” (2 Corinthians 1:20). The different Bible Verses About Wine bring much clarification on this contradictory subject matter. The question of whether Christians should drink wine or not, as well as whether drinking wine is a sin or not, has been debated upon for several centuries. However, according to the Bible, it is not a sin to drink alcohol in moderation. Note that the Bible clearly describes or portrays wine as a blessing from God that can make life more enjoyable (Psalm 104:14, 15; Ecclesiastes 3:13; 9:7). In addition to this, the Bible acknowledges the medicinal value of wine (1 Timothy 5:23). Behold, Jesus Christ Himself drank wine during His lifetime on Earth (Matthew 26:29; Luke 7:34). One of Jesus’ prominent miracles was the transformation of water into wine as a generous gift at a marriage feast (John 2:1-10).

Although the Bible mentions the positive aspects of wine, it condemns over-drinking and drunkenness. This is highly supported by the different Bible verses on wine. Hence, a Christian who chooses to drink alcohol must do so in moderation (1 Timothy 3:8; Titus 2:2, 3). It is also important to note here that the Bible gives several reasons why we should avoid over-drinking among which are:

Over-drinking impairs thinking ability and judgment (Proverbs 23:29-35).
Over-drinking deprives us of inhibitions and the desire to do what is right (Hosea 4:11; Ephesians 5:18).
An intoxicated person is unable to fulfill the Bible’s command for us to offer ourselves as living sacrifices to God, dedicated to His service and pleasing to Him (Romans 12:1).
Heavy drinking and drunkenness displease God (Proverbs 23:20; Galatians 5:19-21).
Over-drinking can lead to poverty and serious health problems (Proverbs 23:21, 31, 32).

Bible Verses About Wine

What do the Scriptures say about drinking wine/alcohol?

There is much that the scriptures say about drinking alcohol (Leviticus 10:9; Numbers 6:3; Deuteronomy 29:6; Judges 13:4, 7, 14; Proverbs 20:1; 31:4; Isaiah 5:11, 22; 24:9; 28:7; 29:9; 56:12). However, the Scriptures do not forbid any Christian from drinking beer, wine, or any other drink that contains alcohol. There are several Scriptures that discuss alcohol in positive terms. In support of this, Ecclesiastes 9:7 instructs, “Drink your wine with a merry heart.” In the same light, Psalm 104:14-15 tells us that God gives wine “that makes glad the heart of men.” Prophet Amos goes to the extent of pointing to the fact that drinking wine from your own vineyard is a sign of God’s blessing (Amos 9:14). Also, Isaiah 55:1 reads, “Yes, come buy wine and milk…”

The Command of God regarding alcohol consumption by Christians is that they should avoid drunkenness (Ephesians 5:18). The entire Bible which is the authoritative Word of God does condemn drunkenness and all its effects (Proverbs 23:29-35). In the same light, Christians are also commanded not to allow their bodies to be “mastered” by anything (1 Corinthians 6:12; 2 Peter 2:19). It is without a doubt that drinking alcohol in excess is highly addictive. Also, the Scriptures forbid a Christian from doing anything that might offend other Christians or even encourage them in any way to sin against their conscience (1 Corinthians 8:9-13). With this in mind, it is difficult if not impossible for anyone to say that he/she is drinking wine to excess for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Biblical facts about drinking wine

The Bible clearly tells us that Jesus changed water into wine. It is even said that Jesus Christ Himself drank wine on occasion (John 2:1-11; Matthew 26:29). During the New Testament times, water was not very clean. Without the modern sanitation that we have today, the water was often filled with viruses, bacteria, and other kinds of contaminants. Even today, the same is true in many third-world countries. Because of this, people during the New Testament times, people often drank wine (or grape juice) because it was far less likely to be contaminated. We can support this by reading from 1 Timothy 5:23 whereby Apostle instructed Timothy to stop drinking water exclusively (which was likely causing his stomach problems) and instead drink wine.

Back in those days, wine was fermented (containing alcohol), but not necessarily to the degree that it is today. Behold, it will be incorrect to say that it was grape juice, but it also appears to be incorrect to say that it was the same thing as the wine commonly produced these days. Again, we’ll say that Scriptures do not forbid Christians from drinking beer, wine, or any other drink that contains alcohol. We are hereby trying to say that Alcohol, in and of itself, tainted by sin. Behold, it is rather a drunkenness and addiction to alcohol that Christians should refrain themselves from (Ephesians 5:18; 1 Corinthians 6:12). When alcohol is consumed in small quantities, it is neither addictive, harmful, nor sinful. In fact, there are some medical doctors that advocate drinking small amounts of red wine for its health benefits, especially regarding the well-being of the heart.

How much is too much?

In simple terms, a person has had too much alcohol when his drinking makes him or others vulnerable to harm. The Bible points to the fact that drunkenness is identified, not by a person’s passing out, but by such behavior such as walking unsteadily, being disoriented, having slurred speech, or becoming contentious (Job 12:25; Psalm 107:27; Proverbs 23:29, 30, 33). The Bible tells us that even those who avoid getting drunk can still become “weighed down with . . . heavy drinking” and face its consequences (Luke 21:34, 35).

Complete abstinence from drinking alcohol

Consumption of small quantities of alcohol is a matter of Christian freedom. However, drunkenness and addiction are sinful. In regard to the Biblical concerns about alcohol and its effects, due to the temptation to easily over-consume alcohol, and due to the possibility of causing offense and/or stumbling of others, it is best for a Christian to maintain the safe side by avoiding alcohol consumption (Matthew 5:29, 30; Romans 13:1; and Romans 14:21).

Distorted vision, hearing, and coordination.
Altered perceptions and emotions.
Impaired judgment.
Bad breath and hangovers.

Long term effects of over-drinking alcohol

There are many Bible Verses About Widows worth knowing. They teach us what the Bible says about how we should treat widows. In simple terms, a widow is a woman whose husband has died. In most cases that widows are referred to in the Scripture, it is to point to a woman whose husband has died and she is unable to meetup with her needs and those of her children. We can as well say that the term widow in the Bible carries the idea of woman whose husband is dead and she is left with no one to provide for her. It is in this light that widows are often grouped with vulnerable members of the society such as the poor, aliens, and fatherless (Deuteronomy 14:29; 16:11; 24:20; 26:12). God tells us in the Bible that widows are to be treated with honor and compassion.

Widows are to be offered protection so that no one dares take advantage of their vulnerability. In ancient or Biblical times, the primary purpose of women in marriage was to produce children and heirs to carry-on with the family line. With this in mind, we can say that a childless widow endured double adversity, with no husband to provide for and protect her, and no son to go further with the family name and cater for her in her old age. Such a women might have been considered a disgrace to her family and abandoned in a perilous position. For sure, there were also women whose husbands died young thereby living them behind with young children to cater for all alone. This was obviously difficult as it left them vulnerable in the society.

Bible Verses About Widows

Life was quite difficult for widows as they struggled to single-handle the upbringing of their children. Most were mocked at, rejected, unjustly treated, and left to suffer on their own. Luckily enough, God recognized the widow’s plight and rose to her defense as we can read from Psalm 68:5 – “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.” To remedy to some of the widow’s plight, Deuteronomy 27:19 tells us that anyone who denied justice to a widow was cursed by God: “Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow.” Likewise, Laws and special provisions were put in favor of the widows to safeguard them from abuse and neglect. During harvest time, widows were allowed to glean in the fields of grain so as to gather leftover grapes and olives.

Deuteronomy 24:19 reads, “When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.” The levirate marriage was the primary Old Testament law that protected widows from poverty and cruel treatment in the society. This law was given by God through Moses to the children of Israel so that a man who died before producing a son might still be guaranteed a male heir. Here, the unmarried brother of the widow’s husband would have to take the widow as his wife and perform “the levirate duty.” In this process, the first male child born to the widow was regarded as the legal descendant of the deceased husband.

What does the Scriptures say about Widows?

In the Old Testament Scriptures, we here about the levirate marriage which protected widows from cruel treatment, injustice, and poverty. The stories of Tamar and Onan and of Ruth and Boaz clearly point to or illustrate the levirate marriage. Even in the New Testament, widows are equally given special consideration. According to God, proper religious work involves caring for widows and orphans. In support of this, James 1:27 reads, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Even Jesus Christ Himself condemned the Pharisees for their mistreatment of widows (Mark 12:40). The truth is that God has compassion for those who are left alone; and the church in the likeness of God has to demonstrate that same compassion.

In 1 Timothy 5, Apostle Paul clearly gives details on how the church and individual families are to care for widows. According to Apostle Paul, a widow who received financial and material support from the church had to first meet certain qualifications. First and foremost, the widow to be helped had to be truly in need and completely alone in the world as we can read from 1 Timothy 5:4 – “But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.” Here, Apostle Paul is saying that it is the duty and obligation of families to care for their aging and needy family members.

How the society, family and church should treat widows

Christian children and grandchildren have a special privilege and opportunity to manifest or put their faith in action by giving back love and support to their parents and grandparents, and especially to lonely widows. It is rather unfortunate that today’s Western societies, where independence takes precedence over family relationships, have lost sight of the value of God’s purpose for creating extended families. Brethren, it ought not to be so. This is highly supported by the Bible verses about widows. Among God’s people, families ought to be the very primary support for widows. Apostle Paul in his first letter to Timothy goes further to give guidelines for a widow to be eligible to receive the church’s support.

Besides having no one to cater for her, she ought to be a woman of prayer, a dedicated servant of God Most High, more than 60 years of age, faithful to her husband when he was still alive, and actively committed to good deeds like caring for children, teaching them the ways of God, and serving God (1 Timothy 5:9–10). There are many Bible Verses About Weakness worth knowing. Mankind has an inherent nature of weakness, reason why we turn to God through Christ for strength. Psalms 146:3 says, “Don’t put your trust in human leaders; no human being can save you.” In other words, we can say that on our own, we can do absolutely nothing. In this verse, the Psalmist’s advice is an often repeated notion throughout the Scripture. In the same light Psalm 118:8-9 says, “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.” In addition, Jeremiah 17:5 puts it even more bluntly, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the LORD.’” Human beings, compared to God, are fundamentally weak and untrustworthy.

Even the most powerful of men are limited in what they can accomplish. Only God Almighty has no limit when it comes to what He can do. It is important to understand here that only God has sovereign control over people, nations, nature, and time. The limitations of men in all domains make them inconsistent and unable to help when it is needed most. Unlike God, men are mortal; they are here today and tomorrow they are gone. Psalm 62:9 reads, “Surely men of low degree are a vapor, men of high degree are a lie; if they are weighed on the scales, they are altogether lighter than vapor.” Also Psalm 146:4 says of men, “His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; in that very day his plans perish.” The truth is that human beings are just unreliable. They blow hot and cold, as it were.

The weakness of mankind is such that it can’t be ignored. On our own, we are left in weakness, but in Christ, we receive strength. Note that in weakness, there is no way that we can please God except through Christ. On our own, we can only produce bad fruits as we can read from Galatians 5:19-21 – “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.“

On the other hand, all who are in Christ receive the Holy Spirit that produces good and acceptable fruits before God as we can read from Galatians 5:22-26 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.”

It is worth pointing to the fact that the power of Christ in us is perfected in our weakness. This makeup for another great paradox in the Kingdom of God. Today, a good number of Bible Scholars hold it that the “weakness” Apostle Paul spoke of was a physical affliction of some kind – “a thorn in the flesh.” Behold, we all have these thorns; these weaknesses that we cannot escape. In addition to physical ailments, we share a major spiritual dilemma. We are mere humans with inherent weaknesses. That’s the reason why living a Christian life takes more than human strength. It takes the power of God.

Never forget that it takes the power of God for us to succeed in the Christian race. It is without doubt that one of the greatest struggles we face is admitting just how weak and/or unable we are. It is rather unfortunate that for some of us, even a lifetime of defeats is not sufficient to convince us. That is, we continue trying and failing, stubbornly refusing to give-up our independence. Even a spiritual giant like Apostle Paul found it difficult to admit that he could not do it on his own. Although Paul trusted Jesus Christ for Salvation, it took him long to understand that his weakness was a good thing. This weakness forced him – just as it forces us – to depend totally on God. God wants us to fully depend on Him and Him alone. He is our Strength (Psalm 46:1-3).
