What Does The Bible Say About Adaptation And Evolution? The Lord God Almighty, His Word, and the Good News of the Gospel are unchanging, the same today, yesterday, and forever. However, we must “embrace” change. We must adapt, adjust, and change. Scripture instructs us to be transformed and changed into the likeness and image of Christ. The Lord instructs us in Romans 12:2, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Likewise, the Lord God says in Isiah 43:19, “For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?” As Christians, we should always conform to the changes or adaptabilities we embrace with God’s Word.

As days pass, technology advances, more knowledge is being acquired, and we should look for and embrace new ways that the Lord God has for us to serve Him and carry out His Kingdom work here on earth. In all things, we should hold the Bible as our standard of living as we rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us into All Truth about Glorifying God. Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ says in John 16:13 – “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.” In conformity to the instructions from the Lord God Almighty which we have as Scripture, we should develop the ability to change so as to fit a new specific use or situation.

Facts About Adaptability From The Bible

Adaptation to change is well understood as the ability to yield to a transformation in order to obtain or achieve something or a certain goal. In other words, it is the necessary capacity to assume various alterations related to the routines to which we are accustomed, not offering resistance and accepting to do things differently if circumstances so determine. Can a person grow the skills of adapting to change? Amazingly, yes. The ability to adapt to change is a skill that we can develop and perfect at all times. Below are some Biblical facts about adaptability from the Bible:

1) Adaptability is an Influential and Prerequisite Quality for Ministers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ

1 Corinthians 9:19-23 – “For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. And this I do for the Gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.”

1 Corinthians 10:33 – “Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.”

2) We are to Correspondingly Adapt to Change in Situations and Conditions

Ecclesiastes 3:1 – “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the Heaven.”

Matthew 9:14,15 – “Then came to Him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but Thy disciples fast not? 15 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the Bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the Bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.”

Luke 9:3 – “And He said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.”

Luke 22:35-36 – “And He said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. Then said He unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.”

3) Jesus Christ Demonstrated Adaptability in that being the Son of God He became the Son of Man

John 1:14a – “And the Word [Jesus] was made flesh, and dwelt among us.”

Philippians 2:5-8 – “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.“

1 Timothy 3:16 – “And without controversy great is the mystery of Godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”

4) Adaptability Requires Living above Circumstances and Conditions

Philippians 4:11-13 – “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

1 Corinthians 4:9-13 – “For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage of the world—right up to this moment.“

5) Adaptability has to do with being Open and Willing to do things God’s Way

Hebrews 6:3 – “And this will we do, if God permit.”

James 4:13-15 – “Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”

Acts 18:21 – “But as he left, he promised, “I will come back if it is God’s will.” Then he set sail from Ephesus.“

6) Adaptability means Being Willing to be Fashioned or Refashioned for God’s Glory

Isaiah 64:8 – “But now, O Lord, Thou art our Father; we are the clay, and Thou our Potter; and we all are the work of Thy hand.”

Jeremiah 18:4 – “And the vessel that he [the potter] made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.”

Romans 9:20-21 – “Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to Him that formed it, Why hast Thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?“

Philippians 2:13 – “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.”

7) Adaptability Requires Yielding One’s Mind and Will to God and His Plans

Romans 12:1-2 – “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.“

Romans 6:13 – “Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.“

2 Corinthians 8:12 – “For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.”

1 Samuel 3:18b – “It is the Lord: let Him do what seemeth Him good.“

Matthew 6:10b – “Thy [God’s] will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven.”

Matthew 26:39 – “And He went a little further, and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me: nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt.”

Luke 1:38b – “Be it unto me according to Thy Word.“

8) Adaptability Requires Humility

Matthew 3:13-15 – “Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad Him, saying, I have need to be baptized of Thee, and comest Thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered Him.“

John 3:30 – “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

John 13:8-9 – “Peter saith unto Him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with Me. Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.“

9) Adaptability Requires Conformity to God’s Word

John 6:36-40 – “But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

10) Adaptability Requires Prayers and the Guidance of the Holy Spirit

1 Thessalonians 5:17 – “Pray without ceasing,“

Philippians 4:6 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

John 15:7 – “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”

Mark 11:24 – “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

Adaptation And Evolution – Does the Bible account allow for living things to change over time?

Does the Bible account allow for living things to change over time? Yes, Biblical account allows for living things to change over time. Remember that the Bible says that the Lord God Almighty created living things “according to their kinds” (Genesis 1). Can variation occur within a kind? Yes, variation can occur within a kind. However, does observed adaptation within a kind actually prove that new kinds can evolve? No, adaptation cannot lead to a situation whereby new kinds are evolved. Notice that while adaptation may help species survive under changing environmental and climatic circumstances, it’s not creating anything new on Earth. Exodus 20:11 says, “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.“

What Does The Bible Say About Active Lifestyle? It is important for us to know what the Bible says about living an active Christian life here on earth because we will one day give an account to our Creator, God Almighty. As a matter of fact, the active Christian way of life is the best way of life possible. The Savior of the world, Jesus Christ said He came so that His followers may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly (John 10:10 ). Note that God’s way of living has great benefits for this life and offers “pleasure forevermore” in the next (1 Timothy 4:8; Psalm 16:11 ). However, this does not mean that Christian living is easy. The challenges and difficulties of this way of life are designed to help us grow physically and spiritually to have Jesus Christ’s mind and the character of God.

The Lord God Almighty wants us to regularly learn and follow His ways because in Christ we are His beloved children. Adopting Christian living principles should be our objective as we seek to live active Christian lifestyles. Amazingly, the Lord God gave us the Bible to teach us the best way to live and to give us examples of others to learn from. The Bible contains many principles on how to successfully deal with the challenges of life. Likewise, the Bible helps us build strong, loving, supportive, and lasting relationships. In addition, it helps us to know God’s Commands about how we can live our lives in a way that pleases and glorifies Him – which is the purpose for which He created us. As God’s creatures, we’ll all one day give accounts for our lives. Thus, we should follow His way which is the way of love and peace.

Guidelines For Christian Living

In order to live an active Christian lifestyle, there are certain principles or guidelines to follow. These principles and guidelines are found in the Bible which we should regularly read and meditate on. As Christians, it is important for us to read the Bible daily. It is the Word of God that teaches, comforts, guides, corrects and encourages us about what God is saying concerning any situation we are going through. An active Christian lifestyle involves regular prayers. The Bible teaches that we should pray without ceasing. Prayer is communicating with God. The Lord God has answers to all our prayers; “yes,” “no,” or “wait.” In living our active Christian lives, we should rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We should regularly join Christian gatherings in order to share God’s Word, praise Him, and worship Him.

Another great way of living an active Christian lifestyle is being a witnessing Christian. Let our lives be witnesses of Christ and His Gospel in words and actions. God’s way is the way of love. It is a way of harmony and peace. Let love be the ruling principle of our lives. Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35). We should be faithful and obedient Christians, following the instructions from God in the Bible. We have to stand firm in the ways of God, overcoming temptation by the strength that the Lord God gives us in Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Our lives and appearance should commend the Gospel and make it attractive to others. Our faith in God should overcome the discouragement from the surrounding circumstances.

What Is The Location Of The Garden Of Eden? What the Bible says about its location is found in Genesis 2:10-14, “A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold…The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.” Today, the exact identities of the Pishon and Gihon Rivers are unknown, but the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are well known. If the Tigris and Euphrates mentioned in Genesis 2 are the same rivers by those names today, that would put the Garden of Eden somewhere in the Middle East, likely in Iraq.

Where Was The Garden Of Eden Located?

We know that even a small local flood can change the course of a river, and the Flood of Noah’s day was more than a localized flood. Notice that the Deluge completely changed the topography of the earth. As a result of this, the original location of the Tigris and Euphrates is uncertain. Besides, it could be that the modern rivers called the Tigris and Euphrates are simply named after those associated with Eden, in just the same way that Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, is named after the original town in Judea. Suppose the Middle East region is where the Garden of Eden was, and if crude oil is, as most scientists believe, resulting from rich organic matter, then it stands to reason that the Middle East is where we would find the greatest oil deposits.

Many people speculate that the vast reserves of oil in the Middle East are the result of the decomposition of Earth’s lushest organic materials in the Garden of Eden. Nevertheless, it is important to understand that while the vast oil reserves in the Middle East could probably be the dregs of the Garden of Eden, those promoting such ideas are simply theorizing. As a matter of fact, people have searched for the Garden of Eden for centuries to no avail. However, there are several spots claimed as the original location of Eden, but no one can be certain. We may ask “What happened to the Garden of Eden?” Behold, the Bible does not explicitly tell us what happened to the Garden of Eden after the Fall of Man. Nonetheless, some Biblical scholars think that the Garden of Eden is likely to have been completely destroyed in the Flood (Genesis 6).

In our society today, the phrase “forbidden fruit” has come to mean “something desirable but off limits.” It is from the Biblical account of the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, committing the first sin on earth that the idea of forbidden fruit originated. Genesis chapter 3 clearly gives an account of mankind’s first temptation which took place in the Garden of Eden. We read that Satan, who came in the form of a serpent, questioned and contradicted God’s words. He succeeded in convincing Eve that she had misunderstood God’s clearly stated command not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 3:4–5). The Devil challenged Eve’s understanding of God’s words, suggesting that she should make her own decision based on her personal assessment that the forbidden fruit was “good,” “pleasing,” and ‘desirable” (Genesis 3:6).

Being deceived by Satan, and acting contrary to God’s command (Genesis 2:16–17), the first woman and wife of Adam, Eve ate from the forbidden tree. In the same way, she gave the forbidden fruit to her husband, Adam who ate as well. At that moment, sin, suffering, destruction, evil, and death entered God’s perfectly created world. Romans 5:12 says, “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men becauseall sinned—” Remember what the Lord God told Adam in Genesis 2:17: “but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” Sadly, Adam and Eve chose to disobey God by eating the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Was The Forbidden Fruit An Apple?

Throughout centuries, many people have wondered about the identity of this enticing fruit that caused so much trouble to humanity. Was it a banana? Or perhaps an apple as many people assume? The Hebrew word for “fruit” as used in the Biblical book of Genesis is Peri, which happens to be a generic term used for “result,” “produce,” or “reward.” Truthfully speaking, nowhere is the identity of the forbidden fruit given in Scripture. Some speculate that the idea of its being an apple may have begun when the Bible was translated into Latin. Notice that the Latin word for “apple” is mālum, which is similar to another Latin word, mălum, Thus, it could likely be that when the Latin Vulgate came into being, the similarity in words could have spawned the idea that apples represent evil.

In addition, legend and artwork have also added to the common assumption that the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden was an apple. We idiomatically refer to the larynx as Adam’s apple, a term that originated from a folk tale wherein the bulge in a person’s neck was caused by the apple sticking in Adam’s throat. (Helping the legend along is the fact that the cartilaginous protrusion is more pronounced in men than in women.) Furthermore, Renaissance painters helped affix the identification of the forbidden fruit as an apple through their depictions of Biblical stories mixed with mythology. Folklore tends to create a life of its own when people repeat as truth what began as a suggestion. However, there are reasons to believe that the fruit mentioned in Genesis 3 is no longer available on Earth same with the tree of life (Genesis 2:9; 3:24; Revelation 22:2).

What Is The Origin Of The Different Races And Skin Colors In Humanity? Race denoted the attempt to categorize people primarily by their physical differences. In the United States, for example, the term race generally refers to a group of people who have in common some visible physical traits, such as skin color, hair texture, facial features, and eye formation. The idea of “race” began to evolve around the 17th century, after the beginning of European exploration and colonization, as a folk ideology about human differences associated with the different populations – Europeans, Amerindians, and Africans – brought together in the new era. As to how many races exist, the 1997 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) standards on race and ethnicity require five minimum categories: White, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander.

Brethren, the Bible does not explicitly give us the origin of the different “races” or skin colors in humanity. In actuality, there is only one race – the human race within which we find diversity in skin color and other physical characteristics. In an attempt to answer this question, some Biblical scholars speculate that when the Lord God confused the languages at the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9), He also created racial diversity. However, it is possible that the Lord God made genetic changes to humanity in order to better enable people to survive in different ecologies. Those who hold to this view suggest that the Lord God confused the languages, causing humanity to segregate linguistically, and then created genetic racial differences based on where each racial group settled. Although possible, there is no explicit Biblical basis for this point of view or explanation.

What Is The Origin Of The Different Races And Skin Colors In Humanity?

It was at the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9) that the different languages came into existence, groups that spoke one language moved away with others of the same language. In so doing, the gene pool for a specific group shrank dramatically as the group no longer had the entire human population to mix with. Notice that closer inbreeding took place, and eventually favored the development of certain distinguishing features with time in these different groups (all of which were present as a possibility in the genetic code). With time, further inbreeding occurred through the generations thereby narrowing the gene pool as it grew smaller and smaller, to the point that people of one language family found themselves with the same or similar features/characteristics.

A different possible explanation is that Adam and Eve possessed the genes to produce black, brown, and white offspring (alongside everything else in-between). This would be similar to how a mixed-race couple sometimes has children that vary in color. Considering that God obviously desired humanity to be highly diversified – including in appearance – it makes sense that He would have given Adam and Eve the ability to produce children of different skin colors. Only Noah, his wife, three sons, and their wives survived the flood that destroyed the whole world (Genesis 7:13). Perhaps Noah’s daughters-in-law were of different races. Likewise, it’s also possible that Noah’s wife was of a different race. Possibly, all eight of them were of mixed race, which will explain a lot and mean they possessed the genetics to produce children of different races. Whatever, we are all the same race, created by One God, to glorify Him.

Who Was Cain’s Wife? It is important for us to start by pointing to the fact that Cain and Abel were not the only children that Adam and Eve had. Cain and Abel were Adam and Eve’s first two children but they had many, many more children. During the days of Adam and Eve, life spans covered centuries, meaning Adam and Eve had many children and these children grew and spread out and equally had many children of their own. From the different indications at hand, by the time Cain was able to take a wife, there must have been dozens, perhaps even a hundred or more people living on the earth.
Genesis 1:28 says, “God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground”

In Genesis 1:28, we observe two key points: “Be fruitful and increase in number” and also they were to “fill the earth.” Since there was limited space and resources where Adam and Eve lived and the fact that they had many children, they must have spread. In Genesis 4:16, we are told that after Cain murdered his brother Abel, God sent him away and he ended up settling down in the east of Eden. While in the east of Eden, Cain had intercourse with his wife and they bore a child whom they named Enoch (Genesis 4:17). It is at this very location that Cain built a city and we can assume that if he built an entire city, there must have been many other people living there already or at least nearby.

Who was Cain’s Wife?

By the time Cain was an adult and was sent away by God, Adam and Eve must have had many other children. Adam and Eve’s descendants, probably in hundreds are likely to have been spread out and multiplied around the areas of Eden. There is no doubt that Cain married a relative of his parents, Adam and Eve but since Adam and Eve were blessed by God and they were fruitful and multiplied and their descendants spread out over the earth, there was no difficulty in Cain finding a wife. With life spans of over 900 years for the first human beings, this definitely gave sufficient time to have numerous children who in their turn had their own children and so on. That is, Adam and Eve’s numerous children had their own children who became Adam and Eve’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so forth.

While the Bible does not specifically tell us who Cain’s wife was, it’s clear that his wife was his sister or niece or great-niece, etc. Notice that the Bible does not say how old Cain was when he killed Abel (Genesis 4:8). Since Cain and Abel were both farmers, we can assume that they were likely full-grown adults, possibly with families of their own. Adam and Eve are likely to have given birth to more children than just Cain and Abel at the time that Abel was killed. They definitely had many more children later (Genesis 5:4). As a matter of fact, Cain being scared for his own life after he killed Abel (Genesis 4:14) indicates that there were likely many other children and perhaps even grandchildren of Adam and Eve already living at that time. Cain’s wife (Genesis 4:17) was likely a daughter or granddaughter of Adam and Eve.

More facts

Notice that since Adam and Eve were the first (and only) human beings, their children would have no other choice than to intermarry. As a matter of fact, the Lord God did not forbid inter-family marriage until much later when there were enough people to make intermarriage unnecessary (Leviticus 18:6-18). The reason that incest today often results in genetic abnormalities is that when two people of similar genetics (a brother and sister) have children together, there is a very high risk of their recessive characteristics becoming dominant. On the other hand, when people from different families have children, it is highly unlikely that both parents will carry the same recessive traits. Over the centuries, the human genetic code has become increasingly “polluted” as genetic defects are multiplied, amplified, and passed down from generation to generation.

Adam and Eve being the first humans to be created by the Lord God did not have any genetic defects, and that enabled them and the first few generations of their descendants to have a far greater quality of health than we do in our own days. Adam and Eve’s children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren had few, if any, genetic defects. As a result, it was safe for them to intermarry. And this is what they likely did until much later when there were enough people to make inter-family marriage unnecessary.

Did God Create Other People In Addition To Adam And Eve? Brethren, there are no indications in the Bible to make us think or believe that the Lord God created any humans other than Adam and Eve. A brief Biblical account of creation in Genesis 2 reads, “This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven. Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground. Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. The LORD God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed… Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.’ …So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man” (Genesis 2:4-8, 18, 21-22). This Scripture clearly answers our question.

Take note of Genesis 2:5 which says, “Now no shrub of the field was yet on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.” From the Scripture that says “…and there was no man to cultivate the ground,” it is a clear fact that before the creation of Adam and Eve, there were no humans in existence. Also notice the Scripture that says, “There He placed the man whom He had formed.” Behold, it talks just of the one “man” and not the “men.” And this one man, Adam was alone (Genesis 2:18) so God made a woman out of his rib to be his companion. All other human beings have descended from these two original people whom the Lord God created.

Was Satan The Serpent In Genesis 3? Yes, the serpent we hear of in Genesis 3 was Satan. The Devil/Satan was either appearing as a serpent, possessing the serpent, or deceiving Adam and Eve into believing that it was the serpent who was talking to them. Remember that Satan is the father of lies/deception. We know that serpents/snakes do not possess the ability to speak. On several occasions in the Scripture, Satan is described as a serpent. Revelation 20:2 says, “He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.” Likewise, Revelation 12:9 says, “The great dragon was hurled down, that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.”

Although the Bible is not clear as to whether or not the serpent stood up or walked before the curse, it appears likely that, as is the case with other reptiles, it probably did walk on four legs. That would seem to be the best explanation of Genesis 3:14, “So the LORD God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.’” The Lord God cursed the serpent to crawl on his belly and eat the dust of the earth forever, indicating that the serpent would forever be despised and looked upon as a nasty and despicable creature and an object of scorn/disdain.

Why did God curse the serpent knowing that Satan was the one hiding behind it?

Genesis 3:14 clearly makes us understand that the Lord God cursed the serpent to crawl on his belly and eat the dust of the earth forever. This curse followed the deception of Satan who took the form of a serpent to question and contradict God’s instructions thereby leading Adam and Eve into disobedience by eating from the forbidden tree. Following this, we are likely to ask, “Why did God curse the serpent when He knew that it was actually Satan who had led Adam and Eve into sin?” Behold, the curse of the serpent would one day be the fate of Satan himself. In support, Revelation 20:10 says, “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.“
