Why Didn’t Adam And Eve Find It Strange That A Serpent Was Talking To Them? Many people have a hard time believing that the serpent in Genesis 3 spoke because they claim animals don’t speak. For such people, “the problem is the talking snake.” Probably accounts like this lead some people to think that being a Christian almost requires you to stop thinking when you step into Church. Likewise, they say, “In the real world you are governed by reason and science. In here we talk about fairy tales as if they really happened.” Truthfully speaking, when it comes to the talking snake in Genesis 3, Balaam’s talking donkey in Numbers 22, raising the dead, healing the sick, divine encounters, and other miracles in the Bible, many people have a hard time believing because they haven’t experienced such or seen a miracle themselves.
Brethren, notice that it’s not because you haven’t seen something or experienced it that cancels its existence or makes it impossible. Some people may even go to the extent of saying something like, “Doesn’t science disproof this stuff?” Likewise, others may ask, “Can this be proven by science?” While we may not want to be on the wrong side of science, it’s important to know what science can and cannot do. As Christians, let’s think of science as a lane on a road. In the lane of science is the natural world; all the things that can be observed, studied, tested, and proven through experimentation. But the scientific method has no way to deal with the supernatural or miraculous. By definition, miracles or supernatural happenings are outside of what is natural and so they are outside the lane of science.
Why Didn’t Adam And Eve Find It Strange That A Serpent Was Talking To Them?
Knowing and acknowledging the strengths and limits of science will help us to better understand and answer this question. Behold, science doesn’t have the answer to all the questions. Science has its limits especially when it comes to the supernatural or miraculous. Notice that you can’t create an experiment to test something that is outside of its lane; like talking snakes, donkeys, or dead people rising. This doesn’t mean that science is deficient but that those things that are outside the natural order of things cannot be proven or disproved by it. Science can only conclude that in nature, snakes don’t talk. But this doesn’t mean that if God, or in this case, the devil, intervened in nature it could not happen. When the Lord God Almighty is involved, everything is possible.
As to whether or not animals have ever had the power of speech, there are powerful beings (God, Angels, Satan, Demons) who can manipulate the physical world, including enabling animals to speak. For example, we know of Balaam’s donkey that spoke to him and tried to keep him from going down a road where an angel stood and could be seen only by the donkey (Numbers 22:21–35). In the case of Balaam, the donkey spoke the truth with the intention of preventing him from being killed whereas, in the case of Adam and Eve, the serpent’s speech was intended for deception. Note that Satan is often referred to as a serpent or a dragon. And it is widely held that Satan was possessing the serpent in order to speak to Eve without raising suspicion.
The reason why we Believe in the Supernatural or Miraculous
Why should we even believe in the supernatural? Does the supernatural actually exist? How can we believe it? As humans, we are more likely to believe in the supernatural by experiencing it, observing it, and/or hearing about it from a trustworthy source. So, if we have not seen snakes talking ourselves, and there are no YouTube videos in which snakes have been recorded talking, how can we believe Genesis 3? And this leads to questions like, “Is the Bible a reliable source? Is it a trustworthy witness?” The answer is “yes” because Jesus Christ Himself affirmed the book of Genesis as history and He showed that He is trustworthy by His own resurrection from the dead which was recorded in history by reliable witnesses. Therefore, it’s only logical to believe that what Jesus Christ said and affirmed is true, even if such goes against the natural order of things.
As a matter of fact, even people who don’t believe a word in the Bible have to admit that there is death and that good and evil exist in this world. Although they may not be able to explain why they can’t deny evil and death exist. The Bible tells us that the snake is the problem; not a problem for our intellect but a problem for our morality and mortality. In Genesis 3, the Devil who came to Eve in the form of a serpent did question and contradict God’s Word. Remember that God is the Maker and Supreme Ruler of Heaven and Earth. He is the Beginning and the End. Words cannot fully explain His Wisdom and Sovereignty. He is All-Knowing, All-Powerful, and Present Everywhere. Knowing these, Adam and Eve still chose to disobey Him by yielding to the Devil’s lies. Today, many are making the same mistake.
Sin and Redemption
Behold, it was not unreasonable for Eve to answer the snake. After all, the snake was evidently speaking in a language that she clearly understood and could speak. It is also likely that Adam was nearby and could verify that she was not imagining things. It is not the serpent speaking that should have alarmed them. Rather, it should have been the fact that the serpent was causing them to doubt God’s instructions (Genesis 3:1), contradicting God (Genesis 3:4), and calling God’s motives into question (Genesis 3:5). Behold, that should have been enough to cause both Eve and Adam to stop talking to the serpent. Listening to the Devil and yielding to his deceptive plan made Adam and Eve disobey God by eating from the forbidden tree. This very act brought Judgment and sin to humanity.
The disobedience of Adam and Eve to God’s instructions opened the pathway for sin to come on mankind. And as the Bible tells us, sin brought death to humanity. All of us being Adam’s descendants are born in Adam’s sinful nature. Nevertheless, the Lord God in His loving-kindness promised to send a Savior/Redeemer, Jesus Christ. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Jesus Christ, the beloved Son of God, came in human form, made known the Will of His Father, overcame temptation from the Devil, suffered, died, and resurrected thereby conquering sin and the Devil. Today, anyone who believes in Him and follows His ways benefits from God’s special gift of Eternal Life. Sin entered the world through Adam and is conquered through Jesus Christ.
Did God Literally And Visibly Walk In The Garden Of Eden?Genesis 3:8 says, “And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.” The Lord God Almighty is Spirit (John 4:24), so how could He be “walking” in the Garden of Eden? Let’s start by pointing to the clear fact in Genesis 3:8 that God’s approach in the Garden of Eden was heralded by a “sound” or a “voice.” Notice that the verse begins by stating, “They heard the sound” of the Lord God. It’s clear that whatever form the Lord God took, it certainly allowed for the physical production of sound. Behold, His walk was audible.
Also, the verse mentions the “presence” of God “among the trees” of the Garden of Eden. It was a presence that Adam and Eve acknowledged and thought they could hide from. God’s garden walk included both sound and some sort of presence among the trees. Nevertheless, interpretations of these statements vary a lot. Some Biblical scholars emphasize that God the Father is invisible and as such cannot be seen by humans. According to this view, God did not appear in the flesh; rather, He took on a symbolic, incorporeal appearance, such as a cloud, much like He did with the Israelites in the desert with Moses (Deuteronomy 31:15). Others suggest that the idea of God “walking” refers to a theophany – an appearance of God in a tangible, human form. As such, point to a parallel in Genesis 18, where God appears as one of three (seemingly human) visitors to Abraham.
Did God Literally And Visibly Walk In The Garden Of Eden?
Still, on whether the Lord God literally and visibly walked in the Garden of Eden, there is another theory based on the Hebrew phrase translated “the cool of the day.” This could be literally translated “the wind of that day.” Some think this might refer to a strong wind. If so, Adam and Eve’s reaction makes more sense. They heard God’s approach as a terrible wind that lashed the trees of the garden, and they took cover. The Almighty God called (using a Hebrew word that also means “to summon”) Adam to face judgment. Acts 2 records an interesting Parallel: the coming of the Holy Spirit was accompanied by “a sound like the blowing of a violent wind” (Acts 2:2). Likewise, the Lord God Almighty spoke to Job “out of the whirlwind” (Job 38:1).
In any case, whether the Lord God Almighty appeared in human form or in a cloud, or whether He made His presence known by a windstorm, it is clear that God Himself confronted the sinners and issued judgment. In His loving and graceful nature, this judgment also included the promise of a future Redeemer (Genesis 3:15). Behold, the Redeemer of humanity came in the person of Jesus Christ, the perfect sacrifice for sin and substitute for sin’s judgment. Jesus Christ came as the beloved Son of God and the perfect lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Those who believe in Jesus Christ have their sins forgiven and are offered God’s special gift of Eternal Life (John 3:16).
Did Adam And Eve Have Sex In The Garden Of Eden? Truthfully speaking, the Bible does not say whether or not Adam and Eve had sexual relations in the Garden of Eden. And as a result, we cannot say with certainty whether they did or did not. However, let’s take a look at the issue a little more deeply for a better understanding. Genesis 1:26-28 says, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ 27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth,’”
Notice that in Genesis 1:26-28, the Lord God Almighty created and placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and commanded them to multiply and fill the earth. However, we do not know with certainty if they had begun to fulfill that command by having sexual relations in the garden. In addition, we do not know with certainty how long they were in the Garden of Eden before they fell. What we know with certainty about Adam and Eve having sexual relations is found in Genesis 4:1 which reads, Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the Lord.” This happened after they had sinned and were driven out of the Garden of Eden. However, we can’t be as clear on what happened prior to the Fall.
What Language Did Adam And Eve Speak? Truthfully speaking, the Bible does not tell us what language Adam and Eve spoke. Notice that the only hint we get is when Adam called his wife “woman” because she was taken “out of man” (Genesis 2:23). Note that the Hebrew word for “man” is ish and the Hebrew word for “woman” is ishah. Nevertheless, before concluding that Adam and Eve spoke Hebrew because of this wordplay, we should also note that there is a similar wordplay in English: man and woman are similar words. This gives room for the possibility that in Genesis Moses is simply giving a Hebrew equivalent of whatever language Adam and Eve spoke, just as English versions give an English equivalent. Notice that the Bible has been translated into so many languages and each translation has an equivalent of the Hebrew words.
Genesis 3:20 which gives another clue says, “The man named his wife Eve because she was the mother of all the living.” In the Hebrew language, the word “Eve” and the word for “living” have a similar sounds. There is no equivalent in English. The English word Eve sounds more like the end of something than the beginning. However, our word Eve is from the Latin Eva, which sounds somehow similar to the Hebrew word havvah, which sounds somehow similar to the Hebrew word for “live.” And today, this is the word that is used throughout the English translation of the Bible as an equivalent of the Hebrew word.
What Language Did Adam And Eve Speak?
Truth be told, we really do not have any idea of the language that the first man, Adam, and the first woman, Eve spoke in their days. The evidence in Genesis can easily be explained as a Hebrew translation of whatever the original language was. Remember that the languages were confused at Babel, and the “original language” may have been lost there (Genesis 11). Even if the original language was some form of what we know today as Hebrew or some other Semitic language, languages change over time.
As proof that languages change over time, Fluent English speakers often have trouble with Shakespeare’s Elizabethan English, barely 400 years old, not to mention Chaucer’s Middle English, barely 150 years older than that. In addition, the Old English of Beowulf, written about 350 years before Chaucer, is hardly recognizable as English at all and must be translated to be understood by today’s English readers. It is most likely that whatever language Adam and Eve spoke during their days is completely lost to us today, even if it eventually morphed into what was called Hebrew at the time of Moses. Whatever the case, we know that the Bible does not clearly tell us the language that was spoken by Adam and Eve.
How Long Were Adam And Eve In The Garden Of Eden? In other words, How long did Adam and Eve live in the Garden of Eden before they sinned and God threw them out? While there are all kinds of wild speculations, we as Christians need to search the Scriptures to see if we can find verses to answer the question. Genesis 1 and 2 give us the details of God’s creation of the world, including humanity. Adam, the first man, and Eve, the first woman were the very first human beings to be created by God. It’s from them that every other human being descends. God formed Adam from the dust of the ground and breathed His own life into the man (Genesis 2:7). God fashioned Eve out of Adam’s rib (Genesis 2:22). Both Adam and Eve, and all humans today, were made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26–27; 5:1).
In Genesis 2, we learn about Adam and Eve’s first home, the Garden of Eden. We learn that God planted a garden and placed Adam there to tend it (Genesis 2:8, 15). However, despite the beauty of God’s newly created world, there was one thing missing. The Lord God Himself said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him” (Genesis 2:18). Following this, the Lord God made a woman and brought her to him (Genesis 2:21–25). Notice that Adam and Eve began their life together in paradise, but how long did the two remain in the Garden of Eden until they sinned and were cast out (Genesis 3)? This is the question we’ll be answering throughout this piece of writing.
How Long Were Adam And Eve In The Garden Of Eden?
How long were Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden? Truthfully speaking, we do not know. However, based on other Biblical evidence, we can assume that their time in the Garden of Eden was relatively short. Notice from Scripture that the couple did not have their first child until after they were banished from the garden (Genesis 3:23—4:2). Since Romans 5:12 tells us that “sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned,” Adam must have been childless at the moment he chose to sin. Behold, any child born before Adam’s sin would not have inherited Adam’s sinful nature. With this at hand, we are more likely to believe that the serpent tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit and the couple was expelled from the garden quite early on (Genesis 3:1–7).
Brethren, according to Genesis 4, Eve did not bear her first son (Cain) until after she and Adam sinned and were expelled from the Garden of Eden in Genesis 3. Behold, her body was healthy and sexually mature at the moment of her creation. She did not have fertility issues (and Adam was not sexually immature or impotent either). It’s obvious that not long after they met, they would have connected sexually, meaning it would not have taken many months or years for her to conceive a child. While some married couples struggle to bear children for a long time (if ever resulting in pregnancy), it was not their case. Had Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden for many years, enough time would have elapsed to result in several children. This makes us think that they were in the Garden of Eden for just a short time.
The Sin of Adam and Eve
Genesis 2 narrates how the Lord God Almighty placed Adam in a garden with trees of whose fruits he may eat but forbids him to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Likewise, Adam’s wife and companion, Eve was expected not to eat from the forbidden tree as well. Unfortunately, Eve was deceived by the Devil to eat from the forbidden tree after which she convince her husband to do the same. Their disobedience opened a pathway for sin to fall on humanity. In their sin, Adam and Eve decided that the Lord would not be their Lord in this situation. They would be their own gods and choose for themselves what was right for them. Sadly, the world has been reaping the consequences ever since.
The Lord God Almighty had given Adam and Eve everything that they needed to thrive and enjoy life, but they soon choose to disobey Him, and they lost paradise. The Bible tells us that immediately after sinning, Adam and Eve realized that they were naked, and felt ashamed (Genesis 2:25; 3:7). They made coverings for themselves out of fig leaves. But God provided them with garments of skin (Genesis 3:21), clearly demonstrating that sin leads to death, as He had said, and that “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Hebrews 9:22). Notice here that God’s action was a foreshadowing of the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, whose blood would ultimately cover the sins of all who put their faith in Him (Hebrews 10:1–18). Still in the Garden of Eden, God promised a Savior, one who would crush the serpent (Genesis 3:15). That Savior is Jesus Christ.
The Expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden
After Adam and Eve sinned, the Lord God drove them from the Garden of Eden and placed an Angel with a flaming sword to guard it so they could not return (Genesis 3:24). However, God never forsook them. As a matter of fact, the Lord God had a plan for redemption before He even called the world into existence (Isaiah 46:10; John 1:1–5; Revelation 13:8). For now, the world persists in sin, marred by its consequences (Romans 1:18–32; 8:18–25). Amazingly, those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ have been forgiven their sins (2 Corinthians 5:21; Colossians 2:13–15). We have new lives and are new creatures in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17; John 10:10) and will live with God for all eternity (Luke 23:43; John 3:16–18).
Brethren, one day God Almighty will make new heavens and new earth (2 Peter 3:8–13; Revelation 21—22). The tree of life lost to Adam and Eve, will be available to all who are a part of God’s restored creation in Christ (Revelation 2:7; 22:1–2). Although Adam and Eve’s time in the Garden of Eden was short-lived, all is not lost. God offers us true life in Him. He loves this world and is patient with it, allowing it to continue on, because He wants all to Repent and come to Him through Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:9). Nevertheless, He will one day bring Judgment, and we must be ready (2 Peter 3:10). Let’s turn away from our sinful ways as we embrace the Good News about the Kingdom of God made known to men by Jesus Christ. By His Grace, through Faith, we can be Saved (Ephesians 2:1–10).
Why Did God Create And Put The Tree Of Knowledge Of Good And Evil In The Garden Of Eden? This is one of the most common questions asked by those who hear God’s Word. Brethren, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil wasn’t there to condemn Adam and Eve. God put the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the Garden to give Adam and Eve a choice to obey Him or disobey Him. Adam and Eve were free to do anything that they wanted to do, except to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 2:16-17 says, “And the LORD God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.’”
It is important to understand that the Lord God Almighty created Adam and Eve to be “free-will beings” and not robots. Notice that if God had not given Adam and Eve the choice, they would have been essentially robots, simply doing what they were programmed to do. God created Adam and Eve to be “free” beings, able to make personal decisions, able to choose between good and evil. It’s clear that in order for Adam and Eve to truly be free, they had to have a choice. There was nothing essentially evil about the tree or the fruit of the tree. It is unlikely that the fruit, in and of itself, gave Adam and Eve any further knowledge. That is, the physical fruit may have contained some vitamin C and some beneficial fiber, but it was not spiritually nutritious. However, the act of disobedience was spiritually deadly.
Why Did God Create And Put The Tree Of Knowledge Of Good And Evil In The Garden Of Eden?
There was nothing essentially evil about the tree or the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden. It was Adam and Eve’s disobedience to God’s instructions not to eat from the tree that opened the pathway for evil and sin to enter humanity and cause spiritual death. Adam and Eve’s sin of disobedience opened their eyes to evil. For the first time, they knew what it was to be evil, to feel shame, and to want to hide from God. Their sin led to the fall of humanity. Eating the fruit, as an act of disobedience against God, was what gave Adam and Eve the knowledge of evil and the knowledge of their nakedness (Genesis 3:6–7).
The Lord God Almighty knew ahead of time what the results of sin would be and never wished Adam and Eve to sin. However, God knew that Adam and Eve would sin and would thereby open the pathway for evil, suffering, and death to come upon them and their descendants. Why, then, did God allow Satan to tempt Adam and Eve? The Lord God Almighty allowed Satan to tempt Adam and Eve to force them to make the choice. Notice that Adam and Eve chose, of their own free will, to disobey God and eat the forbidden fruit. The results – evil, sin, death, suffering, and sickness – have plagued the world ever since. Adam and Eve’s decision to disobey God results in every person being born with a sinful nature, a tendency to sin.
Redemption From Sin And Evil Through Jesus Christ
Adam and Eve’s decision is what ultimately required Jesus Christ to suffer, shed His blood, and die on the cross on our behalf. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can be free from sin’s consequences, and ultimately free from sin itself. Apostle Paul says in Romans 7:24-25, “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Likewise, John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Why Did God Use Adam’s Rib To Create Eve? Behold, the Lord God Almighty used Adam’s rib to create Eve because He wanted Adam to have a helper/companion with whom he won’t be feeling lonely in the midst of the animals in the Garden of Eden. The Biblical book of Genesis clearly relates how God created Eve: “The Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man” (Genesis 2:21–22). Notice that the phrase for “one of his ribs” could be translated “a part of his side” (NET), but most English translations specify the part as “rib.”
In making the first man, Adam, the Lord God used the “dust of the ground” to form his body and “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7). But, in making the first woman, Eve, the Lord God did not go back to the dust of the ground; He used one of Adam’s ribs to form her. When she was brought to Adam, he said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man” (Genesis 2:23). It’s clear that God used Adam’s rib to form Eve – He used existing tissue and did not “start from scratch” – to show that Adam and Eve were of the same substance; she was a bearer of God’s image and likeness, just as Adam was (Genesis 1:27).
Why Did God Use Adam’s Rib To Create Eve?
Brethren, why did God use Adam’s rib? Fascinatingly, ribs have amazing regenerative powers. Portions of rib bone and cartilage removed in bone graft surgery will regrow in a few months’ time, as long as the rib perichondrium is left intake. This means that Adam’s loss of a rib was only temporary; he did not have to go through the rest of his life with an incomplete skeletal system. It is important to understand that the woman made of Adam’s rib was designed to be a companion and “helper suitable” for Adam (Genesis 2:18). Eve, formed from a physical part of Adam, was truly his compliment, an integral part of who he was. As such, she was a perfect companion.
Behold, when the Lord God brought Eve to Adam, they were united in marriage: the “woman” in Genesis 2:22 is called Adam’s “wife” in verse 24. The pattern for marriage, the first social institution, was thus established by God. The manner of Eve’s creation is “why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” The unity of a married couple and the “one flesh” principle are based on the fact that God used one of man’s ribs to make the woman. God’s use of one of Adam’s ribs to make Eve is significant in that it reminds us that woman was created to be “beside” man. Thus, man and woman complement one another in marriage, and in Christ, they are “heirs together of the grace of life” (1 Peter 3:7). And as such, should live in love, peace, and unity.
What Is The Biblical Creation Story? Adam and Eve were the first humans, according to the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic religions. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are religions that do not only hold to the fact that Adam and Eve were the first humans but also teach that all humans have descended from them. As clearly stated in the Bible, Adam and Eve were created by God to take care of His creation, populate the earth, and have a relationship with Him. Behold, their very names are indicative of their roles. Adam comes from the Hebrew Adomah, meaning “man.” Eve is from the Hebrew for “life.” The complete Biblical account of Adam and Eve can be found in Genesis 1:26 to Genesis 5:5. The Bible teaches us that on the sixth day of creation, God created all the land animals, and humans.
The story of Adam and Eve is revealed in Genesis chapters 2 and 3. Their creation is the focus of chapter 2 with their fall and punishment in chapter 3. We’ll advise you to get a Bible and read these two chapters in the book of Genesis in order to get a full understanding of the story of creation. The basic creation story is found in Genesis 1 and 2, with the account of what happened in the Garden of Eden in chapter 3. Genesis 1 begins before the existence of anything except God Himself. God’s revelation of Himself and His will for mankind is the beginning of the creation story. In this beginning, God created everything in the universe (Genesis 1:1). This includes all the heavenly bodies (including every star and planet), as well as everything on the Earth.
What Is The Biblical Creation Story?
What The Scriptures Say About Creation
While the triune nature of God is not explicit in the Genesis account, God does reveal an “us” within the Godhead (Genesis 1:26). The Spirit is active in creation (Genesis 1:2) as is Christ (John 1:1–3; Colossians 1:15–17). In the six days of creation, God formed light, the universe, and the earth (day 1); the sky and the atmosphere (day 2); dry land and all plant life (day 3); the stars and heavenly bodies, including the sun and moon (day 4); birds and water creatures (day 5); and all the land animals and man (day 6). It is important to note that mankind is special above all other creatures because he bears the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and has the responsibility to steward and subdue the earth (Genesis 1:28). All of creation was completed in six days in all its vast array and wondrous beauty.
God announced that His creation was “very good” (Genesis 1:31). Genesis 2 sees the ending of God’s creative work and gives a more detailed account of the creation of man. The seventh day is marked by God’s resting. It is worth pointing out that the rest does not suggest that God was tired; rather, His “rest” was simply a cessation of work. Behold, God was done and the universe was just as He wanted it to be. God’s six days of work, followed by a day of no work, establish a pattern of taking one day in seven for rest and sets the number of days in the week still in use today. Amazingly, the keeping of the Sabbath later became a distinguishing mark of God’s chosen people (Exodus 20:8–11.)
God Created Adam
The Bible teaches us that God created man in His image. He formed man from the dust of the ground. While the Bible does not say that God used His hands to mold the dust of the ground into the shape of a man, it does indicate that this was a much more active manner of creation than the rest of what God had made. Previously, God had only spoken the objects into existence. But God formed man and then breathed life into him in an apparently personal way. The very first man was named Adam. God brought all the animals to him to be named. Then God said: “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner.” God knew that Adam was lonely and decided to bring him companionship. Man needs companionship and God has made provisions for it.
God Created Eve
The Bible informs us that God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep and then He performed the first surgery by cutting Adam open and forming a woman from his rip. Behold, God certainly did not need to do this but it is another of many interesting pictures in the creation story. Adam knew clearly that the woman was made from his own side. Genesis 2:23 says, Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Adam and Eve were more than just simple two creatures which God spoke into existence. They were made for God’s pleasure and were intimately connected to one another. This woman was named Eve.
God’s Command To Adam And Eve
The Almighty God gave Adam and Eve a beautiful garden named Eden in which to live. They had all the fruits and vegetables they could possibly want to enjoy. Adam and Eve were to tend the garden and have dominion over it and the animals. Many people say that work is part of the curse that came as a result of man’s fall in the garden, but the actual curse is that work would be difficult and laborious. The Lord God gave Adam and Eve many beautiful plants and trees to enjoy for food. But God also gave them one three from which they were not to eat. This was the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God’s command to them was that if they ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, they would die.
The Fall Of Adam And Eve In The Garden Of Eden
The Bible clearly informs us that the Devil entered into a serpent and tempted Eve (Genesis 3:1). He successfully convinced Eve to doubt God’s Word. Satan told her that God knew that Eve would become enlightened and possess the same knowledge as God had if she ate from the fruit of the tree. Behold, this is similar to Satan’s temptation to man today – that he does not need God. Note that the fruit was beautiful and Satan was cunning. Eve fell to the temptation and took the fruit from the forbidden tree. Finding the fruit delicious, Eve took it to Adam for him to have a taste. Adam also ate from it. From the time Adam ate, their lives, and that of the future of humanity changed. Immediately, they knew they had done wrong. In other words, they knew they had disobeyed God and would be punished for their disobedience.
Adam And Eve Hid From God In The Garden Of Eden
As it was the Almighty God’s custom, He came to visit Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. They tried to cover their nakedness with fig leaves. Their nakedness was something that they had never even noticed before. The Bible tells us that when they heard God coming, they hid from Him. God searched for them. Of course, we know without a single doubt that God is all-knowing. God was not looking for them because He did not know where they were, but to give Adam and Eve a chance to return to Him and acknowledge their sin.
God’s Punishment For Adam, Eve, And The Serpent
The Bible tells us that God spoke with Adam, Eve, and the Serpent. Each one had a specific punishment from God. God told Adam that His work would be hard. It would become toilsome (Genesis 3:17-19). God told the woman that she would bear children with great pain (Genesis 3:16). The Lord God intended that Adam and Eve would have children because He talked about man and woman leaving father and mother to get married (Genesis 2:24). Adam and Eve had no father or mother. Thus, it was a pronouncement for future generations that God fully intended to come with time. Eve’s punishment was that the bearing of children would be painful. God gave the Serpent the punishment of crawling on the ground and that he would be cursed more than any other creature (Genesis 3:14). Note that the punishment was given to the animal and not just to Satan.
To Satan, God said that he would be punished in the future by the promise God would give. God told Adam and Eve in the beginning that they would die on the day they ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. One death was immediate. They were spiritually separated from God. However, their physical bodies continued to live. But they would not live forever as God apparently intended. They would become old, sick, and die. Adam, Eve, and the Serpent were put out of the Garden of Eden and the curse came not only on them but on the whole world. There were briers in the fields now. They had to provide for themselves with their own hands. Adam and Eve had many children (Genesis 4). Sadly, their firstborn son, Cain, killed their second son, Abel. Adam died at 930 years of age (Genesis 5:5).
God’s Great Promise
When speaking about the extent of Satan’s punishment, God said that the seed of the woman would come to destroy him. This seed was the promised Redeemer we read so much about in the Old Testament of the Bible. He was revealed in the New Testament to be Jesus Christ. Although Satan would bruise the Savior’s heel (a fatal wound) the Redeemer would crush Satan’s head (a mortal wound) (Genesis 3:15). As a way of showing His love and giving a sign of things to come, God sacrificed an animal for Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:21). It is worth noting that this slain animal was to represent future sacrifices and forgiveness by God (Genesis 3:21). The Bible makes us understand that God made clothes for Adam and Eve from an animal which shows God covering their sins with a substitutionary sacrifice.
Questions And Answers About Adam And Eve
Were Adam And Eve Saved?
The Bible does not specifically tell us whether Adam and Eve were saved. Adam and Eve were the only two human beings who knew about God before they became tainted with sin. Therefore, they likely still knew God better after their fall than any of us do today. Adam and Eve most definitely believed in and depended on God. Even after the fall, God continued to talk with Adam and Eve as well as provide for them. Behold, Adam and Eve knew of God’s promise that He would provide a Savior (Genesis 3:15). The Lord God Almighty made garments of skin for Adam and Eve after the fall (Genesis 3:21). Many Biblical scholars perceive this as the first animal sacrifice, foreshadowing the eventual death of Jesus Christ on the Cross for the sins of the world. With these facts at hand, it would seem that Adam and Eve were saved.
When Were Adam And Eve Created?
If the ages in Genesis chapter 5 and the Old Testament history are traced using a young-earth creationist view, Adam and Eve were likely created in approximately 4,000 BC. Nevertheless, other interpretations of Genesis have much broader ranges for that date.
How Many Children Did Adam And Eve Have?
The Bible does not give a specific number when talking about the children of Adam and Eve. What the Bible reveals is that Adam and Eve had Cain (Genesis 4:1), (Genesis 4:2), Seth (Genesis 4:25), and many other sons and daughters (Genesis 5:4). With likely hundreds of years of child-bearing capability, Adam and Eve likely had 50+ children in their lifetime.
Did Adam And Eve Have Belly Buttons/Navels?
A belly button/navel (or bellybutton) is formed by the umbilical cord that connects a baby in the womb to its mother. The Bible tells us that Adam and Eve were created directly by God, and so did not go through the normal birthing process. Following this, Adam and Eve would probably not have had belly buttons/navels.
Were Adam And Eve Cavemen?
Behold, Genesis chapter 3 records Adam and Eve having a fully intelligent conversation with God. In Genesis chapter 2, Adam had named all the animals, thereby exercising his dominion and showing great creativity and the ability to categorize and perceive the true nature of things. Genesis chapter 2 presents Adam and Eve as husband and wife. They were married and dwelled together complementing each other. It is important to understand that Adam and Eve were not primitive, “ape-like,” or intellectually deficient by any means. The first human beings were created flawless, in a perfect state; until they choose to sin. In other words, Adam and Eve were the ideal human beings.

Did Adam And Eve Know What Death Was? When God created Adam, the first man, and Eve, the first woman, He placed them in the Garden of Eden where they lived in a state of innocence, without sin. The Lord God freely gave them the fruit of every tree in the garden except one: the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. As for this tree, the Lord God told them not to it from it, “for when you eat from it you will certainly die” (Genesis 2:17). Today, some people reason that Adam and Eve’s punishment for disobedience was overly harsh, because, before they ate the forbidden fruit, they could not have had knowledge of good and evil; not having that knowledge, they couldn’t really tell right from wrong. In response, it’s worth noting that the Bible never says Adam and Eve couldn’t distinguish between right and wrong.
According to Genesis 3:2-3, Adam and Eve understood the difference between right and wrong; Eve clearly knew that the Lord God had instructed her and Adam not to eat the forbidden fruit (cf. Genesis 2:16–17). Taking the name of the forbidden tree, “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (Genesis 2:9), to mean that Adam and Eve had no understanding of good and evil is a misunderstanding. The word knowledge in Scripture often means “experience.” Truth be told, prior to the fall, Adam and Eve had no experience of evil. However, they understood the concept of good and evil quite well, or they would not have known what obedience to God’s instructions meant. Notice that Adam and Eve had not yet sinned until they ate from the tree, and their sin was the gateway to a firsthand, experiential knowledge of the difference between good and evil.
Did Adam And Eve Know What Death Was?
Behold, Adam and Eve clearly knew the difference between right and wrong, because both were created with that understanding; it’s just that they hadn’t experienced it personally until they sinned. Their lack of experience doesn’t excuse their actions. The Lord God Almighty gave a simple, straightforward instruction to Adam and Eve. Notice that Adam and Eve had the understanding and the ability to obey, but they disobeyed anyway. In addition, might be the Lord God gave Adam and Eve an explanation of why they weren’t supposed to eat from the tree of the Knowledge of good and evil, other than “you will certainly die.” However, there is no such explanation recorded in Scripture, but we shouldn’t assume that one was never given. But even if the Lord God didn’t fully explain why eating from the tree was wrong, Adam and Eve could still know that it was wrong.
Today, we can know with great confidence that murder is wrong, without necessarily committing murder or being able to explain why it is wrong. And even if we can’t explain why murder is wrong, we should still be held accountable for any act of murder we commit. Behold, Adam and Eve’s not knowing the exact reason they were forbidden to eat the tree’s fruit has nothing to do with the fact that they clearly knew and understood eating it was wrong. Nevertheless, it is worth pointing to the fact that death exists in the world today because of sin, not because of Adam and Eve’s lack of knowledge (cf. Romans 5:12). As a matter of fact, God didn’t punish Adam and Eve with death for simply “not knowing” something but for acting against what they already knew was right. Thus, death was a consequence of disobedience and not ignorance.
Were Adam And Eve Naive?
Adam and Eve directly, intentionally disobeyed a command from God. Their disobedience brought sin unto humanity. And Romans 6:23 teaches us that “the wages of sin is death.” With this in mind, many people often ask how God could punish Adam and Eve (and the entire mankind) so harshly for doing something they could hardly have been expected to know was wrong. Thinking as such is somehow assuming that Adam and Eve had no more moral intelligence than the average toddler. Thinking of Adam and Eve as harmless, totally naive children certainly makes God’s response seem overblown, like a father who has lost all patience with his kids. Wouldn’t a reasonable God have at least given His beloved children a second chance? Or at least rid the garden of the tree before Adam and Eve could encounter that danger? Why sentence your own creation to death for one “innocent mistake“?
Such are the kind of questions that come up when we think of Adam and Eve’s sin as a naive mistake. But thinking of Adam and Eve’s sin as a mere naive mistake is off base. It is important for us to understand that innocence is not the same as ignorance. Consider what we know about the first couple, Adam and Eve: the Lord God created them in a perfect world and gave them dominion and freedom over the entire earth; they knew and spoke face to face with their perfect, loving, and good Creator God (Genesis 2:22). In other words, the Lord God created them, protected them, provided for them, and loved them. In spite of all these blessings, Adam and Eve listened instead to the serpent, who directly contradicted what God had told them (Genesis 3:4–5).
The Trick of the Serpent
The Lord God Almighty provided all the needs of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Notice that the serpent had done nothing to provide for them and nothing to love and care for them, and his words only contradicted the goodness of God they had experienced up to that point. Adam and Eve had no reason at all, as far as we know, to trust what the serpent said. Unfortunately, they trusted him thereby rejecting what they knew about God’s will, provision, and loving care. As a matter of fact, Adam and Eve’s reason for rejecting God’s command was not an innocent mistake as Genesis 3:5-6 clearly demonstrates that Adam and Eve saw the fruit as an opportunity to become “like God.” Although shocking as it sounds, it was their desire to become “like God” that brought their downfall.
Behold, Adam and Eve – grown adults, rulers of the earth, perfectly capable of understanding what it meant to obey or disobey the loving God who had provided them with everything they needed – rejected the same God, in favor of the false promise of a serpent, who had never given them even a single reason to trust him over God. Notice that this is not the mistake of a child in ignorance but the willful, intentional rebellion of the created against the Creator, a mutiny against the rightful Ruler of the Universe. As a matter of fact, Adam and Eve were not artless babes misled into a regrettable choice; they were God’s own intelligent, morally accountable creation committing treason against Him. Both of them clearly knew that what they were doing was wrong, and they did it anyway.
Our conclusion
In conclusion, we must think of Adam and Eve the way Scripture portrays them: as responsible, comprehending adults who rebelled against the authority of their maker. Behold, Adam and Eve knew and understood that they were disobeying God, yet they ate of the fruit that was “a delight to the eyes, and . . . desirable to make one wise” (Genesis 3:6). Brethren, this was not an accident or a mistake but a choice. And that is the reason why the Lord God Almighty was justified in sentencing them-and us-to death. This confirms what Scripture says of the Lord God Almighty, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you” (Psalm 89:14).
Amazingly, God in His loving nature didn’t abandon mankind following the Fall of Man. The Lord God Almighty responded to their disobedience with a promise of redemption. Genesis 3:15 gives the first expression of the Gospel during the sentencing of the guilty: to the serpent, God said, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” The Good News is that God has made a way for us to be restored through the work of Jesus Christ. Despite all the evil displayed by Adam and Eve – and that which all of us have displayed ever since – God has reached out to us in love. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.“
Was Adam And Eve’s Sin Really About Eating A Piece Of Forbidden Fruit? Behold, there existed a Literal Adam and Eve, Garden of Eden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 2:15–17 says, The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” Adam, the first man, and Eve, the first woman did literally eat a piece of forbidden fruit and thereby introduce sin and death to humanity. Notice that it was not so much the actual fruit that brought death as it was Adam and Eve’s disobedience to God.
The phrase “forbidden fruit” refers to the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The Lord God Almighty had given Adam dominion over all the animals as well as access to all the trees in the garden of Eden save one. In other words, Adam and Eve were forbidden by the Lord God to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:9; 3:2). Notice that the Bible says nothing about what type of fruit it was. Although tradition has identified it as an apple, it’s impossible to know with certainty what kind of fruit it was. From Genesis, every indication is of a literal tree with a literal fruit. However, we are made to understand that the fruit was desirable to the eyes, fragrant, and delicious. But as Adam swallowed the fruit, sin and death would swallow the human race.
Was Adam And Eve’s Sin Really About Eating A Piece Of Forbidden Fruit?
Brethren, was Adam and Eve’s sin really about eating a piece of forbidden fruit? What exactly was Adam and Eve’s sin? Observe that the key element in the passage is not the fruit itself, but the prohibition against eating it. In fact, the Lord God gave Adam and Eve only one prohibition in His instructions. Whether or not there was some spiritual property within the fruit itself is really irrelevant. Truthfully speaking, the sin was in disobeying God’s command. Eating the forbidden fruit was an act of disobedience through which Adam and Eve gained personal knowledge of evil. Adam and Eve already knew good, but now they had the contrasting experience of the evil of disobedience. Likewise, they felt the guilt and shame that came with their disobedience.
Satan’s lie was that knowing good and evil would make them become like gods (Genesis 3:5). In reality, they were already made in the image of God and His favor and blessings were upon their lives. God prohibiting them from eating the forbidden fruit was not a command aimed at hiding any good thing from them. God didn’t create humans to be robots but He gave them free will. Thus, humans can choose to have or not have a personal relationship with Him, to acknowledge and love Him or not, and to obey His instructions or not. There would be no true love between God and humans if people were not free to choose against God. Forbidding the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was not an act of cruelty but an offer made by God for a true relationship based on free will.
More Biblical Facts
Eve believed Satan’s lies and Adam followed her, the couple chose to trust their own independent reasoning and sense perception over God’s Word (Genesis 2:15–17; 3:1–7). So, was Adam and Eve’s sin really about eating a piece of forbidden fruit? Yes, in the sense that the fruit was the object by which they demonstrated their choice against God. In eating the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve gained experiential knowledge of evil. Their sin immediately resulted in spiritual death and shame. In addition, they were separated from God and all of humanity would be born in sin and equally separated from God (Romans 3:10–12; John 3:16–18; Ephesians 2:1–10). Note that the Fall of Man has affected our entire world.
A Deeper Look Into Adam And Eve’s Sin
Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. It is obvious that they sinned, and as we know, sins rarely exist in isolation. A deeper look into Adam and Eve’s sin can be made by applying what we know about God’s revealed commands in both the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible. Following this approach, Adam and Eve committed many sins. These sins of Adam and Eve are:
1. Adam and Eve disobeyed God
In Genesis 2:17, God said to Adam and Eve, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” Did Adam and Eve obey this instruction from the Lord God? Genesis 3:6b says, “She took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.” With this truth at hand, it’s obvious that Adam and Eve disobeyed God.
2. Adam and Eve Broke the First Commandment
The First Commandment from God in Exodus 20:3 reads, “You shall have no other gods before me.” Adam and Eve fell to the temptation of the serpent in Genesis 3:5a when he promised “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God” Notice that Adam and Eve sought to make themselves gods thereby breaking the 1st Commandment.
3. Adam and Eve Dishonored their Creator and Heavenly Father
As Christians, we know that dishonoring God is not something to be taken lightly. The Bible teaches us to honor our earthly fathers. If we are to honor our earthly fathers, what more of our heavenly Father? Exodus 20:12a says, “Honor your father and your mother” Unfortunately, many people are more likely to argue that the fourth (4th) Commandment does not apply here. If you are one of these, Romans 1:21a comes to clarify your doubts as it teaches that one of the root sins against God is not honoring Him: “For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God” With this in mind, it’s our duty to honor God for Who He Is.
4. Adam And Eve were not Thankful
Romans 1:21 says, “For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him.” God as our Creator, expects that we acknowledge Him for Who He Is and as well be thankful for the good things He does for our wellbeing. Notice that instead of being thankful for all the things that God had already given them, Adam and Eve desired more to the extent of disobeying God’s instructions.
5. Adam and Eve Murdered
The fifth (5th) Commandment in Exodus 20:13 says, “You shall not murder.” In modern legal language, it might be more accurate to say that Adam and Eve committed manslaughter, but ultimately their decision led to death for all mankind. Romans 5:12 says, “Sin came into the world through one man, and his sin brought death with it. As a result, death has spread to the whole human race because everyone has sinned.“
6. Adam and Eve Stole
The Seventh (7th) commandment in Exodus 20:15 says, “You shall not steal.” By taking the forbidden fruit and consuming it, Adam and Eve took what was not theirs. The Lord God clearly told them not to take from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But they went forth to take and consume, a situation regarded as stealing.
7. Adam and Eve Bear False Witness
When the Lord God questioned Adam and Eve for their sin, they tried to lay the blame for their sins on others. This can be regarded as a form of “bearing false witness” that we see in Exodus 20:16: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” And this happens to be the 8th commandment. Behold, running away from responsibility and shifting blame is frowned upon by Scripture.
8. Adam and Eve Coveted what was not theirs to have
The tenth (10th) Commandment warns us against covetousness. Exodus 20:17 says, “You shall not covet.” The Fall of Man was brought about by covetousness. Adam and Eve so much desired what was not theirs to have so much that they ended up taking it.
9. Adam and Eve lacked Faith and wanted to Trust in their own Wisdom over the Wisdom of God
Adam and Eve fell to the trick of Satan who came in the form of a serpent because they lacked faith. They did not believe in God enough to take Him for His Words. If they had believed in God enough, they would not have listened to the liars of the Devil. Also, one of the primary reasons why the fruit was desirable for them was because they were promised wisdom that was not theirs. Genesis 3:6a says, “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate.”
10. Adam Failed to Protect Eve
Scripture commands men to protect and provide for their families. 1 Timothy 5:8 says, “But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” With this in mind, we are likely to ask ourselves the question, was Adam with Eve when she spoke to the serpent? Could it be that Adam was idly sitting by as some people suggest? Genesis 3:6b says, “She took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.” Notice that throughout Scripture, the responsibility for the sin of mankind is laid on Adam specifically, not Eve. This is observed in Genesis 3 when Adam and Eve were hiding from God. God calls out to Adam first, not Eve. Adam was ultimately responsible but failed.
Moral Lesson
The lesson behind this story for us today is that when God prohibits something, it is for our own good. Disobeying Him, going our own way, or deciding for ourselves what is and is not beneficial to us will always lead to disaster. It is important to understand that our Heavenly Father who created us in His own image knows what is best for us, and when He prohibits something, we should listen to Him. When we choose to obey our own wills instead of God’s perfect and holy will, things never go well for us. Adam and Eve made that sad discovery after eating the forbidden fruit, and mankind has suffered the consequences of their decision ever since. Romans 5:12 says, “When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.“
Redemption for Humanity
Despite the Fall of Man, the Lord God Almighty in His loving-kindness still brought hope for humanity. Adam and Eve’s eating of the forbidden fruit did not change God’s character or His Heart. In fact, God knew even before creating Adam and Eve that they would sin. Yet, He still chooses to create out of love. God provided His beloved Son, Jesus Christ as a sacrificial lamb through which all people can be saved from sin. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Likewise, Romans 5:19 says, “For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.” Through His Death and Resurrection, Jesus Christ conquered sin that came through the Fall of Man.
