What Does the Bible Say About Violence in Marriage? Truthfully speaking, every family has disagreements. In other words, the couple that never has conflicts does not exist. Unfortunately, conflicts can lead to bad fights. Note here that a bad fight is one that seriously alienates husband and wife but never resolves the cause of the problem. Following such, couples build up bitterness, uncontrolled anger, quarreling, abuse, violence, hatred, and divorce thereby ending up in broken marriages. It is rather unfortunate that many couples lack the skills to discuss disagreements and resolve them. Couples need the ability to discuss serious problems, reach a plan to resolve them, and then put that plan into action. Behold, this is a skill that can be learned and mastered over time. In addition to revealing what the Bible says about marriage problems, we’ll also reveal what the Bible says about resolving marriage problems.

It is clear that no one sets out deliberately to damage his/her marriage. The truth is that we all want happy, satisfying marriages. But since we dwell in an evil world that subtly influences us more than we realize, a good number of sincere Christian couples drift into a number of dangers that damage, broke or destroy their marriages. Despite the fact that no marriage is perfect, when believer’s or Christians avoid the world’s ways and apply the wisdom of God’s Word in their marriages, they will enjoy healthy marriages. It is worth pointing out here that the main goal of marriage is not our happiness, but rather God’s glory. According to Ephesians 5:32, our marriages are a picture of Christ and His bride. It is our duty to display to the world the faithful, holy love that Christ has for His church.

What Does the Bible Say About Violence in Marriage?

The dangers in this evil world that will damage your marriage if you are not careful

Behold, we live in evil times and as such, we must keep watch at all times not to fall into the deadly tricks of the evil one. It is in this light that Christians are to avoid the world’s dangers and apply God’s wisdom to their marriages. Remember that in the paragraph before he gives explicit commands to wives and husbands, Apostle Paul gives these general commands: “Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:15-17). It is with this in mind that we are calling on you to note that the evil world presents many dangers that will damage your marriage if you are not careful.

1) Poor communication will damage your marriage – Ephesians 4:15

Ephesians 4:15 says, “but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ.” Truth be told, poor communication is one of the most prevalent causes of marital problems. As the head, Christ is to be the Lord of all our communication. Thus, before speaking, ask yourself “Will my words be pleasing to the Lord Jesus Christ?” And  “Are my words both truthful and loving, with the aim of building up my mate in Christ?” To blast your mate because “that’s just how I feel,” maybe truthful, but it does not reflect love in any way. Likewise, to be dishonest about how you feel or not to say anything to avoid conflict may seem loving, but it’s not truthful and will likely lead to long-term distance in the relationship.

2) Anger and abusive speech will damage your marriage – James 1:19-20

James 1:19-20 says, “But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.” It is very important for Christians to understand that sinful anger is always destructive to relationships. With a good understanding of this, Apostle Paul commanded in Ephesians 4:29 – “Let no unwholesome [lit. ‘rotten’] word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.”  In the same light, he added “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor [yelling] and slander be put away from you, along with all malice” (Ephesians 4:31). Proverbs 15:1 adds “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Therefore, as Christians, we must exercise Self-Control.

3) Bitterness and lack of forgiveness will damage your marriage – Ephesians 4:31-32

Ephesians 4:31-32 says, “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor [yelling] and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.” Amazingly, the antidote to anger and bitterness is forgiveness. It is without a doubt that as the years go by, married couples will invariably wrong one another. Failing to deal with these wrongs God’s way will slowly build a dividing wall of resentment and bitterness. With this in mind, it is important to keep short accounts with your mate. To deal with the sin of bitterness and lack of forgiveness, tell your partner, “God has convicted me of my sinful anger and I’ve asked His forgiveness. I will try to work to overcome that sin. I’m asking you, ‘Will you forgive me?’”

4) Sexual immorality (beginning on the thought level) will damage your marriage – Mark 7:21-23

Mark 7:21-23 says, “For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.” The reason why we emphasize, beginning on the thought level, is because Jesus Christ Himself said that all immorality begins in the heart (Mark 7:21-23; Matthew 5:27-28). This means, guys, that if you happen to be secretly lusting after women other than your wife or you are watching pornography, you are sabotaging your marriage. You should take this seriously and note that you are on the slippery slope that leads to physical immorality. And even more seriously, Christ said that by failing to take radical measures to cut mental lust out of your life (pluck out your eye, cut off your hand), you are headed for hell (Matthew 5:29-30).

5) Alcohol and drug abuse will damage your marriage – Galatians 5:21

Galatians 5:21 says, “Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Alcohol and drug abuse have torn apart several homes around the world. Several people argue that alcoholism and drug addiction are diseases. This is partly, but not totally, correct. Alcohol abuse, as well as drug abuse, are sins. Addicts usually have their bodies crave for it so much so that they tend to lie, steal, or do worse in order to obtain the substance. It is wrong to deny that alcohol and drug abuse are sins thinking that it absolves the person of responsibility for his actions. Note that no one ever became addicted to drugs or alcohol without choosing to take the first hit of a drug or first drink.

6) Selfishness will damage your marriage – Matthew 22:39

Matthew 22:39 says, “And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Jesus Christ taught that the second greatest commandment is for you to love our neighbor as you love yourself. And behold, your spouse is your closest “neighbor.” To love him/her requires killing your selfishness every day. Note that selfishness takes many forms and it is the root cause of anger. A selfish husband insists that he is right and won’t listen to or yield to any other views. Such a man does not think, talk less of caring about his wife’s needs or how she may feel, but only thinks about his needs and how he feels about the matters at hand. In marriage, it is wrong to think just about yourself. If both spouses work for the happiness of each other, they’ll enjoy their marriage.

7) Competition instead of cooperation will damage your marriage – Ephesians 5:28-30

Ephesians 5:28-30 says, “In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body.” It is rather unfortunate that many Christian couples are striving for dominance and power in their marriage. This is often portrayed in the way they exchange barbed comments or make use of humor to try to put one another down. And if you were to confront them, they’d protest, “we’re just joking!” Whatever the case, it is important to understand that competition, whether in marriage or in church, goes against the truth that we are members of one another and our main aim should be to buildup one another as written in the Scriptures.

8) Financial irresponsibility will damage your marriage – Proverbs 21:20

Proverbs 21:20 – “In the House of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.” Today, it is without a doubt that disagreements over money matters are a major cause of divorce. It can happen that a freewheeling, impulsive spender will marry a cheapskate who won’t buy anything that isn’t on sale, in a thrift store, or absolutely necessary at the moment. A couple like this will have to work overtime to live in harmony. A good starting point is to study what God’s Word says about financial stewardship. Likewise, instead of competing, couples should cooperate. This will spare them from the spending war.

9) Wrong expectations and goals will damage your marriage – 1 Timothy 6:7-10

1 Timothy 6:7-10 says, “For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” Unfortunately, many couples enter marriage with unstated expectations. Clearly knowing each other’s expectations in marriage is a great step to experiencing a joyous marriage. If a man’s expectation is that his wife stays home, keeps the house, and cares for the children, but her expectation is to have a successful career, severe conflict lays ahead.

10) Mismanaging your time will damage your marriage – Ephesians 5:15-17

Ephesians 5:15-17 says, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Likewise, Colossians 4:5 says, “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time.” Apostle Paul clearly tells us that if we are wise, we’ll make the most of our time. Sadly, it is easy to fall into the workaholic trap, where you neglect your family. Or, many families get overloaded with too many activities. Or, a husband and wife are going in different directions and not spending enough time together. As couples, it is vital to regularly spend quality time together so as to strengthen your marriage bond. Being busy round the clock could break your marriage.

11) Moving away from the Lord will damage your marriage – 2 Chronicles 7:14

2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” It is important to understand that marriage is like a triangle with God at the top and the couples at both lower corners. And as the couples both move closer to God, they equally grow closer to one another. On the other hand, if they move away from God, they equally move away from each other. Thus, couples aiming for a happy and long-lasting marriage should humble themselves and seek God’s face. By so doing, God will bless and strengthen your marriage. In addition, as each partner grows in the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), they will grow closer to God and to each other.

12) Worldliness will break your marriage – 1 John 2:15-18

1 John 2:15-18 says, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.” Worldliness has broken several marriages and will continue if we don’t pay attention and take precautions. Being worldly is to adopt the world’s values, goals, and ways as opposed to the ways, values, and goals of God Almighty.

What Are The Biblical Solutions For Solving Marriage Problems?

It is no surprise that marriage is the most intimate relationship that two human beings can experience, second only to a relationship with God. Amazingly, marriage brings out the best and worst in most people, as two separate individuals struggle to live as “one flesh” (Matthew 19:6; Mark 10:8). It is worth noting here that at the root of most marriage problems is selfishness. In other words, when one or both partners choose to live as though his or her needs deserve top consideration, conflicts result. There are specific Bible verses that address the behavior of both husbands and wives. Some of which are 1 Peter 3:1-8, Colossians 3:18-19, and Titus 2:3-5. Even though not addressing marriage directly,  Philippians 2:3-13 has proven to be an excellent recipe for resolving marriage problems.

Philippians 2:3-13 tells us to adopt the attitude Christ demonstrated when He set aside His rights, and privileges as the Son of God and came to earth as a humble servant. Verse 3 and 4 say, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” When this is applied to marriage, almost any obstacle can be overcome. Likewise, seeking counsel from a pastor or Christian marriage counselor is a Biblical thing to do (Proverbs 19:20). Behold, getting counseling is an excellent way to clear misconceptions about marriage roles, to see a situation from another viewpoint, and to distinguish between God’s standards and those of the world.

Biblical solutions for solving marriage problems

  • Understand that every family has disagreements/challenges that must be resolved in the light of God’s Word.
  • As a Christian couple, you must have faith that God will guide you into successfully resolving the challenges that you are facing in your marriage (Philippians 4:13).
  • Hatred, jealousy, competition, bitterness, and/or an unforgiving mind in a marriage union reveals that someone is disobeying God.
  • Do not allow your partner’s unwillingness to improve the marriage to affect your determination to make things work.
  • As a Christian couple, you should always pray for God’s strength to face the challenges that come up in your marriage (Philippians 4:6,7).
  • A Christian man and a Christian woman that have made up their minds to come together as one through the union of marriage should respect the Bible pattern for authority at home (Ephesians 5:22-24).
  • Christian couples should always act in love (Ephesians 5:25,28,29 and Titus 2:4).
  • It is important to understand that love is concerned about the wellbeing of others, expressed through actions, as well as giving and self-sacrifice.
  • Christian couples should always maintain and show commitment to the marriage.
  • It is important to understand that marriage is a lifetime commitment thereby canceling divorce as an option (Romans 7:2,3; Matthew 5:31,32; 19:3-9; 1 Corinthians 7:10,11).
  • Christian couples should grow the habit of expressing appreciation and praise for what is good (Philippians 4:6,7).
  • A husband should regularly express appreciation to his wife as much as a wife should regularly express appreciation to her husband.
  • Christian couples should be willing to discuss the problem so as to figure out a long-lasting solution.
  • Christian couples should be willing and ready to forgive each other just as God forgives us.
  • Believing couples should be willing to seek help from the right source if need be.

What Does the Bible Say About Violence in Marriage?

Malachi 2:16 – “For I hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel, “and him who covers his garment with wrong and violence,” says the LORD of hosts. “Therefore keep watch on your spirit, so that you do not deal treacherously [with your wife].”

1 Corinthians 7:2-5 – “But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Then all people who have rejected Jesus Christ will see another flood, but this will be a flood of God’s judgment (Revelation 2:8). Notice that if the Lord God has not yet brought you to Repentance and Faith in Christ, then today can be your Day of Salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2). Tomorrow may be too late.

Discover Bible Verses About Violence in the Last Days. Jesus Christ gave us clear warnings about the last days and the sign of His return in Matthew 24. He said that near the end of the age, “because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold” (Matthew 24:12) and believers, “you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 10:22). Likewise, the Apostle Paul wrote, “that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people” (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

When the love of many has grown cold, the hate of many has heated up. Men are going to be abusive, difficult, disobedient, reckless, treacherous, heartless, and brutal, which all lead to aggression and violence. Brethren, the increasing worldwide violence is part of the end-times scenario. As such, the increasing violence these days, especially against Christians will get worse before it ever gets better and it will only get better when Christ physically returns to judge the world in righteousness. Then all people who have rejected Jesus Christ will see another flood, but this will be a flood of God’s judgment (Revelation 2:8). For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people” (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

When the love of many has grown cold, the hate of many has heated up. Men are going to be abusive, difficult, disobedient, reckless, treacherous, heartless, and brutal, which all lead to aggression and violence. Brethren, the increasing worldwide violence is part of the end-times scenario. As such, the increasing violence these days, especially against Christians will get worse before it ever gets better and it will only get better when Christ physically returns to judge the world in righteousness. Then all people who have rejected Jesus Christ will see another flood, but this will be a flood of God’s judgment (Revelation 2:8). Notice that if the Lord God has not yet brought you to Repentance and Faith in Christ, then today can be your Day of Salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2). Tomorrow may be too late.

Discover Bible Verses About Violence. Violence is an extreme form of aggression. Violence is defined as “physical force exerted for the purpose of violating, damaging, or abusing,” and sadly, violence is a part of everyday life. It’s in our movies and television shows, and we live in a world where power is often established through violence. But for Christians, the way of the world is always trumped by the Word of God. Note that violence in the mind is just as hurtful as violence by the hands. Leviticus 19:17 says, “Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt.” When we know that someone is in sin, is it more loving to keep it quiet and build up hate and resentment towards them? God says we should speak frankly.

Jesus Christ tells us in Matthew 5:21-22 that murderous anger can lead the angry man to judgment from God as quickly as a physical blow. In fact, the violence he exhibits toward someone else can be brought back upon himself by the Lord God. What about violence in war? Exodus 20:13 had been incorrectly translated as “do not kill,” but it literally means “do not murder.” Notice that God has allowed for just wars throughout the history of His people. From Abraham to Deborah to David, the Lord God’s people have fought as instruments of judgment from a righteous and holy God. Romans 13:1-4 calls on us to submit ourselves to government authorities and that nations have the right to bear the sword against evildoers, both domestic and foreign.

Brethren, the Bible commands us to love others and as such, we should not be violent toward them. Violence is not a characteristic of love. Violence is a demonstration of hatred which is highly condemned in the Bible.
Matthew 5:43-44 says, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,”

Did God Condone Aggression or Violence?

In reading the Old Testament, many people are likely to ask why the Lord God ordered Moses and Joshua to be so aggressive that they killed thousands of people and plundered their cities. Behold, this is an issue that is clearly problematic and has been the source of discussion among theologians for centuries. One example of the passages that portray such comes from the sixth chapter of the Book of Joshua, where God is said to have authorized Joshua to march around the walls of Jericho until they had fallen, then to enter the city with the Israelite army and to slay its inhabitants. Some Biblical scholars might argue that the Canaanite culture was inherently immoral – given to bestiality, brutality, incest, and even human sacrifice – and that it, therefore, deserved God’s wrath. But the passage certainly does not seem to align with our Christian notions of nonviolence and peace.

Pope Benedict XVI addressed the topic in his 2010 apostolic exhortation “Verbum Domini”; in a section titled “The ‘Dark’ Passages of the Bible,” he explained that “God’s plan is manifested progressively and it is accomplished slowly, in successive stages and despite human resistance” – which is another way of saying that the fullness of truth is revealed only in the person, teaching, and ministry of Jesus Christ (No. 42). As such, we would draw an analogy to the passage in the Gospel of Matthew (19:1-12) where Jesus Christ is asked why Moses allowed divorce; Christ’s response was that it was because of the “hardness of your hearts.” God was working, over time, with imperfect people, gradually leading them to Christ.

In as much as we can live wonderful, joyous, and beautiful moments in life, we can as well encounter and live unspeakable and often unexplainable hardship, loss, and tragedy. Isaiah 43:2 says, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” Notice that the Lord God did not say through prophet Isaiah “if” we go through “fire and flood;” He spoke of “when.” As such it is clear that there are moments in life when we are likely going to face adversity. However, the Lord God reassures us that even in the face of adversity He will not forsake nor abandon us. In the face of adversity, the Lord God strengthens His people for victory.

What is Adversity? Adversity refers to a difficult or unpleasant situation. It comes in many forms and to all. Matthew 5:45 says, “so that you may [show yourselves to] be the children of your Father who is in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on those who are evil and on those who are good, and makes the rain fall on the righteous [those who are morally upright] and the unrighteous [the unrepentant, those who oppose Him].” Sometimes, trouble in life is of our own making. The tragic aftermath of King David’s affair with Bathsheba was the result of his sin of lust. However, prior to becoming king, David was unfairly maligned and hunted by King Saul, not because of any sin on his part, but because of King Saul’s fear and insecurity. Similarly, bad things sometimes happen to good people for reasons which are beyond our understanding.

When the days of adversity come, it is easy to lose hope and feel overwhelmed or even discouraged. Amazingly, the Bible has a lot to teach us about the subject of adversity that can provide perspective and hope to those living through life’s greatest storms of hardship, loss, and tragedy. Behold, one of the greatest misconceptions about the Christian faith is that, for those who Accept Jesus Christ as their Personal Lord and Savior, their life is free from the storms of hardship, loss, tragedy, and all forms of adversity. Brethren, such is not the case. In fact, Christians are never exempt from fire and flood. However, the advantage Christians have in the face of adversity is the promise that they will never go through such alone. They have God who loves and cares for them, is for them, and is with them in and through all forms of adversity.
Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Hebrews 13:5 says, Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Isaiah 43:1-2 says, “Do not fear, for I (the Lord) have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine! When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you.”
Although a person becomes a New Creation in Christ by His Divine saving grace, thereby obtaining Eternal Hope, a Christian will still encounter adversity.

What the Scriptures Say About Adversity

Christians are not exempted from sickness, maltreatment, and other forms of adversity. Behold, they also make mistakes, encounter loss, and lose friends as well as loved ones. As a matter of fact, adversity is a part of life, for the Christian as well as the non-believer. In addition, Jesus Christ explicitly warned His soon-to-be disciples of the cost of following Him. Matthew 16:24-25 says, Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. Likewise, Jesus also promised that persecution would come to those who have makeup their minds to Follow Him.
Matthew 5:10 says, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
John 15:18 says, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.“
John 16:33 says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.“

Brothers and Sisters in the Faith, Following and Serving Jesus Christ has never been for the faint of heart. Throughout the Bible, many faithful servants of the Lord God Almighty faced adversity, were rejected, persecuted, and even killed for their faith.
2 Timothy 3:12 says, “In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,“
Matthew 5:44 says, “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,“
Galatians 6:9 says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.“

Is God with us in the Face of Adversity?

Yes, even in the face of adversity, the Lord God is with His children. He has promised never to leave nor forsake them (Hebrews 13:5). Likewise, 1 Peter 4:12-14 says, “Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.” Notice that this was a reminder to Christians that, in spite of their affliction, they are never alone. Behold, the spirit of God rests upon them and will strengthen them in the midst of the different forms of adversity plaguing them.

Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:3-4). Thus, life is not guaranteed to be easy or pain-free. Nonetheless, the invitation from Christ still remains true: “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). The Bible teaches us that the Lord God sometimes uses adversity and hardship to grow, teach, and strengthen His children. Likewise, He often disciplines those He loves just as a good father will do to his children (Proverbs 29:15; Hebrews 12:6). There are times that discipline can come in the form of adversity.

More Biblical Facts About Adversity

James 1:2-4 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” In other words, prophet Malachi compared God’s love to a refiner’s fire or fuller’s soap (Malachi 3:2-4). God can use the friction of a strong soap to cleanse us from anything that does not produce holiness. Likewise, He can use the fires of life to melt away our impurities and make us pure through Christ His beloved Son. Note that the Lord God is not the author of every bad thing that happens in this life. Nevertheless, Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.“

What others mean for evil, the Lord God often turns to good for those who love Him. Genesis 50:20 says, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” Likewise, Jeremiah 29:11 says, For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Notice that these plans may include momentary adversity. However, the affliction of Christians is temporal (2 Corinthians 4:17-18). In the Christian race, life’s trials produce endurance (Romans 5:3-4), and endurance in Christ is what leads us to eternal life. Hebrews 10:36 says, “You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”

Some Bible Characters Who Went Through Adversity

In Christ, we do not need to be afraid of adversity. Rather, we should be encouraged and inspired by the faith of men like Job who was upright and unwavering in his commitment to God despite having lost everything – his children, wealth, and eventually his health. In the face of all these adversities, Job concluded “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him; I will surely defend my ways to his face” (Job 13:15). Notice that in the face of all these tremendous tragedies, Job’s hope is still in the Lord God, his maker.

The Bible also recounts the story of prophet Habakkuk, who, through difficult times, wrote, “even if the fig tree does not blossom, and there is no fruit on the vines, if the yield of the olive fails, and the fields produce no food, even if the flock disappears from the fold, and there are no cattle in the stalls, yet I will triumph in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, and He has made my feet like deer’s feet, and has me walk on my high places” (Habakkuk 3:17-19).
Some other people in the Bible who went through tremendous adversities yet still had their trust in the Lord God Almighty are Moses, Esther, David, Daniel, Meshach, Shadrach, Abednego, Paul, and the other Prophets, Apostles and Servants of Jesus Christ.

Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt.” When we know that someone is in sin, is it more loving to keep it quiet and build up hate and resentment towards them? God says we should speak frankly.

Jesus Christ tells us in Matthew 5:21-22 that murderous anger can lead the angry man to judgment from God as quickly as a physical blow. In fact, the violence he exhibits toward someone else can be brought back upon himself by the Lord God. What about violence in war? Exodus 20:13 had been incorrectly translated as “do not kill,” but it literally means “do not murder.” Notice that God has allowed for just wars throughout the history of His people. From Abraham to Deborah to David, the Lord God’s people have fought as instruments of judgment from a righteous and holy God. Romans 13:1-4 calls on us to submit ourselves to government authorities and that nations have the right to bear the sword against evildoers, both domestic and foreign.

What the Bible Says About Violence

Brethren, the Bible commands us to love others and as such, we should not be violent toward them. Violence is not a characteristic of love. Violence is a demonstration of hatred which is highly condemned in the Bible.
Matthew 5:43-44 says, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,”
Psalm 11:5 says, “The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

Did God Condone Aggression or Violence?

In reading the Old Testament, many people are likely to ask why the Lord God ordered Moses and Joshua to be so aggressive that they killed thousands of people and plundered their cities. Behold, this is an issue that is clearly problematic and has been the source of discussion among theologians for centuries. One example of the passages that portray such comes from the sixth chapter of the Book of Joshua, where God is said to have authorized Joshua to march around the walls of Jericho until they had fallen, then to enter the city with the Israelite army and to slay its inhabitants. Some Biblical scholars might argue that the Canaanite culture was inherently immoral – given to bestiality, brutality, incest, and even human sacrifice – and that it, therefore, deserved God’s wrath. But the passage certainly does not seem to align with our Christian notions of nonviolence and peace.

Pope Benedict XVI addressed the topic in his 2010 apostolic exhortation “Verbum Domini”; in a section titled “The ‘Dark’ Passages of the Bible,” he explained that “God’s plan is manifested progressively and it is accomplished slowly, in successive stages and despite human resistance” – which is another way of saying that the fullness of truth is revealed only in the person, teaching, and ministry of Jesus Christ (No. 42). As such, we would draw an analogy to the passage in the Gospel of Matthew (19:1-12) where Jesus Christ is asked why Moses allowed divorce; Christ’s response was that it was because of the “hardness of your hearts.” God was working, over time, with imperfect people, gradually leading them to Christ.

Violence as a Biblical Evidence of the End Times

Jesus Christ gave us clear warnings about the end times and the sign of His return in Matthew 24. He said that near the end of the age, “because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold” (Matthew 24:12) and believers, “you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 10:22). Likewise, the Apostle Paul wrote, “that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people” (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

When the love of many has grown cold, the hate of many has heated up. Men are going to be abusive, difficult, disobedient, reckless, treacherous, heartless, and brutal, which all lead to aggression and violence. Brethren, the increasing worldwide violence is part of the end-times scenario. As such, the increasing violence these days, especially against Christians will get worse before it ever gets better and it will only get better when Christ physically returns to judge the world in righteousness. Then all people who have rejected Jesus Christ will see another flood, but this will be a flood of God’s judgment (Revelation 2:8). Notice that if the Lord God has not yet brought you to Repentance and Faith in Christ, then today can be your Day of Salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2). Tomorrow may be too late.

What Does the Bible Say About Violence?

Psalm 11:5 – “The Lord tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.”

Proverbs 3:31 – “Do not envy a man of violence and do not choose any of his ways,“

Matthew 26:52-54 – Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines aggression as a forceful action or procedure (such as an unprovoked attack) especially when intended to dominate or master. It’s a hostile, injurious, or destructive behavior, especially when caused by frustration. In psychology, the term “aggression” refers to a range of behaviors that can result in both physical and psychological harm to yourself, others, or objects in the environment. Aggression centers on hurting another person either physically or mentally. It’s against the fundamental message of the Bible which is to love God and love our neighbors just as Christ loved us.
Mark 12:28-31 says, One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Ephesians 4:31-32 instructs us to “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Jesus Christ in John 13:34 says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” Similarly, 1 John 4:8 says, “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Thus, the Bible commands us to avoid all forms of aggression centered on hurting another person in any way.

What Does the Bible Say About Dealing With Aggressive People?

Brethren, the Bible commands us to love others and as such, we should not be aggressive toward them. Aggression is not a characteristic of love. Aggression is a demonstration of hatred and violence which are highly condemned in the Bible. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” Below are explicit characteristics of love from the Bible:

What Does the Bible Say About Violence?

Violence is an extreme form of aggression. Aggression does not always involve violence, but violence always involves aggression. Violence is defined as “physical force exerted for the purpose of violating, damaging, or abusing,” and sadly, violence is a part of everyday life. It’s in our movies and television shows, and we live in a world where power is often established through violence. But for Christians, the way of the world is always trumped by the Word of God. Note that violence in the mind is just as hurtful as violence by the hands. Leviticus 19:17 says, “Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt.” When we know that someone is in sin, is it more loving to keep it quiet and build up hate and resentment towards them? God says we should speak frankly.

Jesus Christ tells us in Matthew 5:21-22 that murderous anger can lead the angry man to judgment from God as quickly as a physical blow. In fact, the violence he exhibits toward someone else can be brought back upon himself by the Lord God. What about violence in war? Exodus 20:13 had been incorrectly translated as “do not kill,” but it literally means “do not murder.” Notice that God has allowed for just wars throughout the history of His people. From Abraham to Deborah to David, the Lord God’s people have fought as instruments of judgment from a righteous and holy God. Romans 13:1-4 calls on us to submit ourselves to government authorities and that nations have the right to bear the sword against evildoers, both domestic and foreign.

Purposes and Signs of Aggression

Aggression can serve a number of different purposes, including:

  • Expressing anger or hostility
  • Expressing possession
  • Intimidating or threatening
  • Competing with others
  • Reacting to pain
  • Achieving a goal
  • Asserting Dominance
  • Responding to fear

Aggressive behaviors can be physical, psychological, verbal, relational, and/or passive-aggressive. Physical aggressive behaviors may include beating, kicking, hitting, or stabbing another person. Damaging property is also a form of physical aggression. Verbal aggressive behaviors may include mocking, name-calling, and yelling. Relational aggressive behaviors which are intended to harm another person’s relationships may include spreading rumors and telling lies about someone else. Passive-aggressive behavior is usually intended to allow harm to come to someone, rather than causing harm directly. While we often think of aggression in its physical forms, psychological aggression can also be very detrimental. For example, intimidating or verbally berating another person are examples of verbal, emotional, and mental aggression. Cyberbullying is another form of non-physical aggression that can be very damaging.

Violence occurs, but we must recognize the difference between the holy judgment on sin and our own personal vendettas against those we dislike, which is the inevitable outcome of pride (Psalm 73:6). While men are more prone to accept violence (especially as cultures depict real men as those who never cry, always have a plan, and carry a gun), the wisest man of all time wrote, “Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways” (Proverbs 3:31). Love, forgiveness, kindness, humility, self-control, prayer and patience helps us overcome aggression, violence, and anger.

What Does the Bible Say About Being Passive-aggressive?

Passive-aggressive behavior is usually intended to allow harm to come to someone, rather than causing harm directly. A passive-aggressive person is one who appears to comply with a request but actually resists it in subtle ways. The resistance can range from pouting to delayed vindictiveness. We all exhibit passive-aggressive behaviors at some point, usually as children when it was not safe to openly rebel. However, as we mature, we should be learning healthier behaviors such as setting boundaries and expressing disagreements more openly. Although the Bible does not use the term passive-aggression, it does give us character sketches of people who exhibited passive-aggressive traits and the results of that behavior.

King David’s son Absalom is an example of a passive-aggressive person (2 Samuel 14:28–33). After Absalom had murdered his brother Amnon (2 Samuel 13:20), David banished him from the kingdom. Even when he was allowed to return to the kingdom, David refused to have anything to do with him. But Absalom was full of pride and hated his father.
He summoned Joab, the commander of David’s armies, to send a message to David. When Joab twice refused the summons, Absalom set fire to his crops in the field. He then began plotting to take over the kingdom from his father, but he did so by feigning compassion and concern for the citizenry. He hinted that his father was not attending to the needs of the people, and that, if crowned king, he, Absalom, would see that their needs were met. Absalom’s plan was working, and “he stole the hearts of the people of Israel” (2 Samuel 15:6). Passive aggressive people are possibly more dangerous than openly aggressive ones because we don’t see the attack coming.

Biblical Facts on Passive-Aggressiveness

King Ahab of Israel demonstrated passive-aggressive behavior when he coveted the vineyard of a neighbor and was denied its purchase (1 Kings 21:1–4). His response to being denied what he wanted was to sulk and pout and refuse to eat. His passive-aggressive actions prompted his wicked wife Jezebel to scheme the murder of Naboth, the vineyard owner, and give her husband the land. The Lord God Almighty immediately sent Elijah the prophet to proclaim to Ahab that He had seen all that happened and that Ahab’s death would soon follow Naboth’s (1 Kings 21:17–22). Notice that it was Ahab’s passive-aggressive behavior that had begun the disastrous chain of events.
Passive-aggressive speech and behavior are cowardly ways of avoiding conflict. By pretending to be pleasant while inwardly seething with resentment, we fool ourselves into thinking that we are peacemakers practicing self-control. In truth, we are communicating contempt and disapproval without having the courage to openly say so. An ancient Chinese proverb presents passive-aggression like this: “Behind the smile, a hidden knife!”

Sadly, social media has turned passive aggression into an art form. We know what it means when we are “unfriended,” “unfollowed,” or blocked. Some people find it easier to vent their frustrations on social media than have a private conversation with someone who has offended them. However, what begins as passive aggression can quickly mushroom into online bullying. The internet and the proliferation of smartphones have created dozens of ways for passive-aggressive people to exact revenge from behind the relative safety of a screen. Whether acted, spoken, or typed, passive-aggressive responses are dishonest and harmful. We are pretending to be unoffended while secretly planning ways to get even.

More Biblical Facts

Leviticus 19:17 says, “Do not harbor hatred against your brother. Rebuke your neighbor directly, and you will not incur guilt because of him.” Brethren, the Bible instructs us to confront sin in a loving and humble way, taking someone with us if the offender will not listen (Matthew 18:15–17). We should be ready to forgive and restore when someone repents (Luke 17:3). Passive aggression bypasses those critical steps in a relationship and goes directly to judgment (John 7:24). Rather than openly confront the wrong and offer an opportunity to clear the air, passive-aggressive people slide silently into the judge’s seat and devise subtle ways to get even. Christians should not be jealous, envious, or backbiting, nor should we try to sabotage someone else’s success. According to Romans 12:15, we should, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” This should be done sincerely from a loving heart.

Behold, keeping Jesus’ Golden Rule would obliterate passive-aggression (Matthew 7:12). In fact, we are to treat others the way we want them to treat us, not the way they have treated us. Regardless of how someone else acts, we are to respond with kindness, patience, and forgiveness (Ephesians 4:31–32). When we stand before God one day, He will not ask us how we were treated, but how we treated others (Romans 14:12). With His help, we can recognize our own passive-aggressive tendencies and replace them with the fruit of the Spirit: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22–25).

Did God Condone Aggression?

In reading the Old Testament, many people are likely to ask why the Lord God ordered Moses and Joshua to be so aggressive that they killed thousands of people and plundered their cities. Behold, this is an issue that is clearly problematic and has been the source of discussion among theologians for centuries. One example of the passages that portray such comes from the sixth chapter of the Book of Joshua, where God is said to have authorized Joshua to march around the walls of Jericho until they had fallen, then to enter the city with the Israelite army and to slay its inhabitants. Some Biblical scholars might argue that the Canaanite culture was inherently immoral – given to bestiality, brutality, incest, and even human sacrifice – and that it, therefore, deserved God’s wrath. But the passage certainly does not seem to align with our Christian notions of nonviolence and peace.

Pope Benedict XVI addressed the topic in his 2010 apostolic exhortation “Verbum Domini”; in a section titled “The ‘Dark’ Passages of the Bible,” he explained that “God’s plan is manifested progressively and it is accomplished slowly, in successive stages and despite human resistance” – which is another way of saying that the fullness of truth is revealed only in the person, teaching, and ministry of Jesus Christ (No. 42). As such, we would draw an analogy to the passage in the Gospel of Matthew (19:1-12) where Jesus Christ is asked why Moses allowed divorce; Christ’s response was that it was because of the “hardness of your hearts.” God was working, over time, with imperfect people, gradually leading them to Christ.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines aggression as a forceful action or procedure (such as an unprovoked attack) especially when intended to dominate or master. It’s a hostile, injurious, or destructive behavior, especially when caused by frustration. In psychology, the term “aggression” refers to a range of behaviors that can result in both physical and psychological harm to yourself, others, or objects in the environment. Aggression centers on hurting another person either physically or mentally. It’s against the fundamental message of the Bible which is to love God and love our neighbors just as Christ loved us.
Mark 12:28-31 says, One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Ephesians 4:31-32 instructs us to “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Jesus Christ in John 13:34 says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” Similarly, 1 John 4:8 says, “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Thus, the Bible commands us to avoid all forms of aggression centered on hurting another person in any way.

How Should a Christian Respond to Hatred and Hostility?

Brethren, the Bible commands us to love others and as such, we should not be aggressive toward them. Aggression is not a characteristic of love. Aggression is a demonstration of hatred and violence which are highly condemned in the Bible. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” Below are explicit characteristics of love from the Bible:

What Does the Bible Say About Violence?

Violence is an extreme form of aggression. Aggression does not always involve violence, but violence always involves aggression. Violence is defined as “physical force exerted for the purpose of violating, damaging, or abusing,” and sadly, violence is a part of everyday life. It’s in our movies and television shows, and we live in a world where power is often established through violence. But for Christians, the way of the world is always trumped by the Word of God. Note that violence in the mind is just as hurtful as violence by the hands. Leviticus 19:17 says, “Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt.” When we know that someone is in sin, is it more loving to keep it quiet and build up hate and resentment towards them? God says we should speak frankly.

Jesus Christ tells us in Matthew 5:21-22 that murderous anger can lead the angry man to judgment from God as quickly as a physical blow. In fact, the violence he exhibits toward someone else can be brought back upon himself by the Lord God. What about violence in war? Exodus 20:13 had been incorrectly translated as “do not kill,” but it literally means “do not murder.” Notice that God has allowed for just wars throughout the history of His people. From Abraham to Deborah to David, the Lord God’s people have fought as instruments of judgment from a righteous and holy God. Romans 13:1-4 calls on us to submit ourselves to government authorities and that nations have the right to bear the sword against evildoers, both domestic and foreign.

Purposes and Signs of Aggression

Aggression can serve a number of different purposes, including:

  • Expressing anger or hostility
  • Expressing possession
  • Intimidating or threatening
  • Competing with others
  • Reacting to pain
  • Achieving a goal
  • Asserting Dominance
  • Responding to fear

Aggressive behaviors can be physical, psychological, verbal, relational, and/or passive-aggressive. Physical aggressive behaviors may include beating, kicking, hitting, or stabbing another person. Damaging property is also a form of physical aggression. Verbal aggressive behaviors may include mocking, name-calling, and yelling. Relational aggressive behaviors which are intended to harm another person’s relationships may include spreading rumors and telling lies about someone else. Passive-aggressive behavior is usually intended to allow harm to come to someone, rather than causing harm directly. While we often think of aggression in its physical forms, psychological aggression can also be very detrimental. For example, intimidating or verbally berating another person are examples of verbal, emotional, and mental aggression. Cyberbullying is another form of non-physical aggression that can be very damaging.

Violence occurs, but we must recognize the difference between the holy judgment on sin and our own personal vendettas against those we dislike, which is the inevitable outcome of pride (Psalm 73:6). While men are more prone to accept violence (especially as cultures depict real men as those who never cry, always have a plan, and carry a gun), the wisest man of all time wrote, “Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways” (Proverbs 3:31). Love, forgiveness, kindness, humility, self-control, prayer and patience helps us overcome aggression, violence, and anger.

What the Bible Says About Being Passive-aggressive

Passive-aggressive behavior is usually intended to allow harm to come to someone, rather than causing harm directly. A passive-aggressive person is one who appears to comply with a request but actually resists it in subtle ways. The resistance can range from pouting to delayed vindictiveness. We all exhibit passive-aggressive behaviors at some point, usually as children when it was not safe to openly rebel. However, as we mature, we should be learning healthier behaviors such as setting boundaries and expressing disagreements more openly. Although the Bible does not use the term passive-aggression, it does give us character sketches of people who exhibited passive-aggressive traits and the results of that behavior.

King David’s son Absalom is an example of a passive-aggressive person (2 Samuel 14:28–33). After Absalom had murdered his brother Amnon (2 Samuel 13:20), David banished him from the kingdom. Even when he was allowed to return to the kingdom, David refused to have anything to do with him. But Absalom was full of pride and hated his father.
He summoned Joab, the commander of David’s armies, to send a message to David. When Joab twice refused the summons, Absalom set fire to his crops in the field. He then began plotting to take over the kingdom from his father, but he did so by feigning compassion and concern for the citizenry. He hinted that his father was not attending to the needs of the people, and that, if crowned king, he, Absalom, would see that their needs were met. Absalom’s plan was working, and “he stole the hearts of the people of Israel” (2 Samuel 15:6). Passive aggressive people are possibly more dangerous than openly aggressive ones because we don’t see the attack coming.

Biblical Facts on Passive-Aggressiveness

King Ahab of Israel demonstrated passive-aggressive behavior when he coveted the vineyard of a neighbor and was denied its purchase (1 Kings 21:1–4). His response to being denied what he wanted was to sulk and pout and refuse to eat. His passive-aggressive actions prompted his wicked wife Jezebel to scheme the murder of Naboth, the vineyard owner, and give her husband the land. The Lord God Almighty immediately sent Elijah the prophet to proclaim to Ahab that He had seen all that happened and that Ahab’s death would soon follow Naboth’s (1 Kings 21:17–22). Notice that it was Ahab’s passive-aggressive behavior that had begun the disastrous chain of events.
Passive-aggressive speech and behavior are cowardly ways of avoiding conflict. By pretending to be pleasant while inwardly seething with resentment, we fool ourselves into thinking that we are peacemakers practicing self-control. In truth, we are communicating contempt and disapproval without having the courage to openly say so. An ancient Chinese proverb presents passive-aggression like this: “Behind the smile, a hidden knife!”

Sadly, social media has turned passive aggression into an art form. We know what it means when we are “unfriended,” “unfollowed,” or blocked. Some people find it easier to vent their frustrations on social media than have a private conversation with someone who has offended them. However, what begins as passive aggression can quickly mushroom into online bullying. The internet and the proliferation of smartphones have created dozens of ways for passive-aggressive people to exact revenge from behind the relative safety of a screen. Whether acted, spoken, or typed, passive-aggressive responses are dishonest and harmful. We are pretending to be unoffended while secretly planning ways to get even.

Leviticus 19:17 says, “Do not harbor hatred against your brother. Rebuke your neighbor directly, and you will not incur guilt because of him.” Brethren, the Bible instructs us to confront sin in a loving and humble way, taking someone with us if the offender will not listen (Matthew 18:15–17). We should be ready to forgive and restore when someone repents (Luke 17:3). Passive aggression bypasses those critical steps in a relationship and goes directly to judgment (John 7:24). Rather than openly confront the wrong and offer an opportunity to clear the air, passive-aggressive people slide silently into the judge’s seat and devise subtle ways to get even. Christians should not be jealous, envious, or backbiting, nor should we try to sabotage someone else’s success. According to Romans 12:15, we should, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” This should be done sincerely from a loving heart.

Behold, keeping Jesus’ Golden Rule would obliterate passive-aggression (Matthew 7:12). In fact, we are to treat others the way we want them to treat us, not the way they have treated us. Regardless of how someone else acts, we are to respond with kindness, patience, and forgiveness (Ephesians 4:31–32). When we stand before God one day, He will not ask us how we were treated, but how we treated others (Romans 14:12). With His help, we can recognize our own passive-aggressive tendencies and replace them with the fruit of the Spirit: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22–25).

Did God Condone Aggression?

In reading the Old Testament, many people are likely to ask why the Lord God ordered Moses and Joshua to be so aggressive that they killed thousands of people and plundered their cities. Behold, this is an issue that is clearly problematic and has been the source of discussion among theologians for centuries. One example of the passages that portray such comes from the sixth chapter of the Book of Joshua, where God is said to have authorized Joshua to march around the walls of Jericho until they had fallen, then to enter the city with the Israelite army and to slay its inhabitants. Some Biblical scholars might argue that the Canaanite culture was inherently immoral – given to bestiality, brutality, incest, and even human sacrifice – and that it, therefore, deserved God’s wrath. But the passage certainly does not seem to align with our Christian notions of nonviolence and peace.

Pope Benedict XVI addressed the topic in his 2010 apostolic exhortation “Verbum Domini”; in a section titled “The ‘Dark’ Passages of the Bible,” he explained that “God’s plan is manifested progressively and it is accomplished slowly, in successive stages and despite human resistance” – which is another way of saying that the fullness of truth is revealed only in the person, teaching, and ministry of Jesus Christ (No. 42). As such, we would draw an analogy to the passage in the Gospel of Matthew (19:1-12) where Jesus Christ is asked why Moses allowed divorce; Christ’s response was that it was because of the “hardness of your hearts.” God was working, over time, with imperfect people, gradually leading them to Christ.
