Bible Verses About Joy and Happiness

The Bible Verses About Joy And Happiness teach us the mindset that we should maintain as followers of Christ even in the face of challenges. Remember that Joy is one of the fruits of the Spirit. Literally, the “fruit of the Spirit” is what is manifested when the Holy Spirit indwells a believer in Jesus Christ. We can as well say that the “fruit” is the product of the Holy Spirit’s cultivation of character in the heart of a person. Galatians 5:22-23 clearly list the different fruits of the Spirit with the second on the list being joy. The Greek word translated as Joy is Chara which points to the natural reaction to the work of God, whether promised or fulfilled. In simple terms, joy expresses God’s Kingdom together with His influence on Earth (Romans 14:17).

The Greek word Chara is closely related to Charis, which means “grace” or “a gift.” Chara is just the normal response to Charis. That is, we have joy because of God’s grace. Such joy is so great that at times, it becomes inexpressible (1 Peter 1:8). Behold, possessing joy is a choice. We chose whether to value God’s presence, promises, and works in our lives. The Spirit opens our eyes to God’s grace around us and fills us with the joy (Romans 15:13). Joy is not to be found in a fallen world but rather through fellowship with God Almighty. He is the reason for our happiness. His love for us was so high that He gave His only Son as an atonement sacrifice for our sins (John 3:16). Today, anyone who Sincerely Repents, Believes and obeys the Teachings of His Son is offered Eternal Life.

Bible Verses About Joy And Happiness

What the Scriptures say about Joy and Happiness

It is without doubt that joy is something that we all long for although it often seems challenging to lay hold on. It is then that you hear the question, “how can I experience Joy in my life as a Christian?” Experiencing joy should be part of every Christian’s daily life. We know that even the most mature of God’s people did experience moments of joylessness in their lives. For instance, King David prayed to be taken to a place were he would not have to deal with reality (Psalm 55:6–8). Job wished he had never been born (Job 3:11). Elijah, even after overcoming 450 prophets of Baal with fire from heaven (1 Kings 18:16–46), fled into the desert where he asked God to take his life (1 Kings 19:3–5).

If these great men of God struggled, then how can we actually experience consistent joy in our Christian life? The secret or key point is to realize that joy is the result of God’s grace in our lives. It comes as God’s gift to those who follow His ways. We are making a mistake to define our joy as the world does . We should derive our joy from the promises of God and the works which He has already accomplished. Let’s yield ourselves to the Spirit and He will open our eyes to the great things which God did for us, is still doing, and will certainly do in times to come. Looking around with a grateful heart, you’ll find a thousand reasons to rejoice and give glory to God. The air you breath, your life, your belongings, and your being is all thanks to God’s love and grace.

Where does Joy come from? – Case of Apostle Paul

Truth be told, Paul was an extraordinary man. His encounter with Christ led him into a greater level of spirituality. Behold, he knew how to rejoice when things went well. But, as our Lord said, even the gentiles rejoice when things go well. There is just nothing especially Christians about that. What is truly extraordinary about Apostle Paul is how unbelievable durable his joy was in the face of challenges or when things weren’t unfolding well or as planned. He says in 2 Corinthians 7:4 – “I am overflowing with joy in all our affliction.” He also says same in Colossians 1:24 – “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake.” One might ask where this joy was coming from. The answer is given as follows:

1. Joy was taught by Jesus (Luke 6:22-23)

Luke 6:22-23 – “Blessed are you when men hate you … Be glad in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven.” Behold, trouble for Jesus compound your interest in heaven where it last forever.

2. From the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22)

Galatians 5:22 – “The fruit of the Spirit is … joy.” Genuine joy does not come from our imagination, thoughts, family upbringing or financial background but from the Holy Spirit. Let’s further support this by reading from 1 Thessalonians 1:6 – “You received the word in much tribulation with the joy of the Holy Spirit.”

3. From belonging to the kingdom of God (Romans 14:17)

Romans 14:17 – “The kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” There is joy and happiness in belonging to the Kingdom of God.

4. From Faith (Romans 15:13)

Romans 15:13 – “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing.” Believing in God for who He is comes with an immeasurable joy which fills the whole being of a person. Philippians 1:25 says, “I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith.”

5. From knowing Jesus (Philippians 4:4)

Philippians 4:4 – “Rejoice in the Lord always.” There is great joy in knowing Jesus Christ, the only Son of God who freely gave up His life out of love so that we may not die but live through Him.

6. From fellow believers (2 Corinthians 1:24)

2 Corinthians 1:24 – “We are workers with you for your joy.” As followers of Christ, our joy also comes from other believers who are instruments in the hands of God. They work hard to help us maintain our faith and keep-up with the Christian race.

7. From the sanctifying effects of tribulations (Romans 5:3-4)

Romans 5:3-4 – “We also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope.” Christ made it clear that blessed are those who endure tribulations in His name for they shall see God and dwell with Him in the Heavenly places. James 1:2-4 says, “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” In addition, Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 11:1 – “Be imitators of me as I am of Christ.”
